  • Palestinian shot dead in Israeli raid on Qalandiya refugee camp
    http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=770500

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian and injured 12 others overnight Monday during clashes that broke out when the military raided Qalandiya refugee camp in the occupied West Bank to extricate two soldiers.

The Palestinian Red Crescent identified the victim as 22-year-old Iyad Omar Sajadiyya , a journalism student at al-Quds University in Abu Dis. He was shot in the head.

Red Crescent officials told Ma’an that ambulances evacuated 12 other young men for medical treatment, four of whom were shot with live ammunition and six by rubber-coated steel bullets. Two young men were also hit with high velocity tear gas canisters.

Qalandiya residents told Ma’an that large numbers of Israeli soldiers were sent to the camp to “rescue a group of undercover [Israeli] officers” who had entered through an alley near the camp’s cemetery.

According to locals, Palestinian gunmen held the soldiers for three hours before they were evacuated by an Israeli military helicopter.

Fierce clashes broke out between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli soldiers while others threw rocks and Molotov cocktails, locals said, adding that the vehicle used by the “undercover forces” was torched during the incident.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that “a mob attacked a military vehicle in Qalandiya refugee camp,” which was set ablaze after rocks and Molotov cocktails were thrown at it.

Two soldiers inside the military vehicle at the time escaped by foot, at which point the Israeli army launched a search to extract the soldiers, the spokesperson said.

“Riots erupted” between residents and military forces carrying out the search and continued after the two soldiers were located, the spokesperson added.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A young Palestinian man was shot and killed by Israeli forces during clashes in the occupied West Bank village of Beit Fajjar on Friday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The Palestinian Authority ministry said Khaled Yousif Taqatqa , 21, was shot in clashes between the Israeli army and Palestinian protesters in the village south of Bethlehem, and died as a result of his injuries at the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem.

Taqatqa is the third Palestinian killed by Israeli security forces on Friday.

The Palestinian Red Crescent was informed that Taqatqa had been injured, but was prevented by Israeli forces from reaching him on the scene, Red Crescent spokesperson Errab Foqoha told Ma’an.

An Israeli army spokesperson said they were looking into the report.

Many villages in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem participate in weekly Friday protests. Israeli forces have received criticism for excessive use force as well as lethal methods of crowd control that often result in death or injury of protesters during these demonstrations.

At least 11 Palestinians were reported injured by live bullets and rubber-coated steel bullets in protests in the West Bank and Gaza on Friday.

On Thursday evening, Israeli forces shot dead four Palestinians from the village of Sair, near Hebron in the occupied West Bank.

Three cousins, Ahmad Salim Abd al-Majid Kawazba, 21, Alaa Abed Muhammad Kawazba, 17, and Muhannad Ziyad Kawazba, 20, were fatally shot near the Gush Etzion bloc of Israeli settlements north of Hebron.

An Israeli army spokesperson alleged that all three were “armed with knives” and attempted to “attack Israeli soldiers guarding the Gush Etzion junction,” Ma’an News Agency reported.

The Palestinian news site Quds quoted local sources who said the three young men all worked as laborers inside present-day Israel.

A short time later, 16-year-old Khalil Muhammad al-Shalalda was shot dead by Israeli forces after he allegedly attempted to stab a soldier at the Beit Einoun junction near Hebron, according to Ma’an News Agency.

      No Israelis were reported injured.

Khalil al-Shalada’s brother, Mahmoud, was fatally shot by Israeli occupation forces during confrontations near Beit Einoun junction on 13 November.

As news of the killings spread, residents of Sair gathered at the family homes of the dead youths and confrontations broke out with Israeli occupation forces.

Sair villagers have witnessed intense violence by Israeli forces in recent months. At least 10 villagers have been killed since the start of October, including the November execution in a Hebron hospital room of Abdallah Azzam al-Shalalda and the killing of a disabled father of a young baby in December.

On New Year’s Eve, Israeli occupation forces seized a plot of land belonging to Sair villager Ismail Abed Rabbu al-Shalalda in order to set up a military post, a provocation likely only to further inflame tension.

On Wednesday this week, thousands of people in Sair attended the funeral of Ahmad Younis Ahmad Kawazba.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — An Israeli military officer shot and killed a 19-year-old Palestinian woman at a checkpoint east of Tulkarem on Tuesday, saying that she had attempted to stab him, Israel’s army said.

An Israeli army spokesperson said that the officer killed the young woman at a checkpoint near the illegal settlement of Enav east of Tulkarem because she posed an “immediate danger” to him.

The Israeli officer was not injured during the encounter.

A spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent said that one of their emergency teams arrived on the scene shortly afterward. She confirmed that the young woman had no vital signs.

The team was prevented from taking away her body, which was instead taken away in an Israeli army medical jeep.

The Red Crescent initially estimated the woman to be around 15 years old. However, a Palestinian family later identified her from photos circulating social meda as their 19-year-old daughter, Maram Ramiz Hassouna , from Rafidia in Nablus.

The family told Ma’an that she had spent a year in Israeli custody after she was charged with attempting to stab an Israeli soldier at the same checkpoint near Enav settlement two years ago.

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a 22-year-old Palestinian in the Ramallah-area village of Budrus, the third to die on Friday from live Israeli fire during clashes in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health told Ma’an that Lafi Yusif Awad was brought to the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah in critical condition and pronounced dead shortly after.

JENIN (Ma’an) — A Palestinian youth was shot dead Saturday near al-Jalama military checkpoint north of Jenin in the occupied West Bank after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli security guard, eyewitnesses and the Israeli army said.

Eyewitnesses told Ma’an that “there were no stabbing attempts” at the time that Israeli forces opened fire at a 16-year-old Palestinian at the crossing.

The forces then dragged the injured youth inside of the checkpoint preventing Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances from reaching him for treatment, eyewitnesses added.

The teen was identified as Ahmad Muhammad Said Kamil from Jenin.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that “an attempted stabbing was thwarted at the Gilboa crossing,” using an alternate name for the checkpoint, where “security personnel” shot and killed the suspect to prevent an attack.

The spokesperson was unable to confirm any injuries and said the Israeli military was currently investigating the incident. The crossing has since been closed.

On Friday, 23 October 2015, in another crime of excessive use of force, private security guards serving the interests of the Israeli forces killed a Palestinian child while running towards the first barrier at al-Jalama crossing, northeast of Jenin. According to PCHR’s investigations and statements of eyewitnesses, on the abovementioned day, Ahmed Mohammed Sa’id Kmail (17) was present along with other peddlers in the place where they used to stay. At approximately 11:00, Kmail suddenly ran towards the first barrier at al-Jalama crossing. The security guards noticed him, so some of them escaped but others opened fire at him. Kmail fell to the ground, however, the Israeli forces denied the Palestine Red Crescent Society’s (PRCS) paramedics access to the area. Soon after, Kmail’s corpse was pulled inside the crossing and the security guards stopped the traffic. It should be noted that the victim was present at the checkpoint in the early morning along with other peddlers, as a number of eyewitnesses said to PCHR’s fieldworker that they saw him selling chocolate-coated marshmallow treats.

The ministry identified the Palestinian as 24-year-old Udaay Hashim al-Masalma , and said that doctors in Hebron’s public hospital confirmed a bullet to the head was the cause of death.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A 12-year-old Palestinian boy was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers during clashes in Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem on Monday, Palestinian medics told Ma’an.

Abed al-Rahman Shadi Obeidallah, 12, was shot near the heart by Israeli forces during clashes in the refugee camp.

He was taken in a civilian car to Beit Jala hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. However, doctors later pronounced him dead.

Another teenager was reportedly shot with live fire in the leg during the same clashes and taken to hospital for treatment, locals said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said she was looking into the reports.

Overnight Sunday, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager during clashes in the northern West Bank village of Bala, east of Tulkarem.

Red Crescent officials told Ma’an that 18-year-old Huthayfa Othman Suleiman was shot in the chest during clashes and died in the operating room.

The killings follow violent confrontations over the weekend in which the Palestinian Red Crescent documented at least 96 Palestinians who were wounded by live rounds or rubber-coated steel bullets in clashes with Israeli forces and settlers.

Overnight Saturday, Fadi Samir Mustafa Alloun , 19, from the East Jerusalem village of al-Issawiya, was shot dead by Israeli forces after allegedly attempting to stab a group of Israelis.

The incident took place just hours after another Palestinian was shot dead when he stabbed and possibly opened fire on a family of Israelis at the Old City’s Lion’s Gate.

Two Israelis were killed and two others injured, including a two-year-old infant, in the attack.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot dead a 16-year-old Palestinian boy after he allegedly stabbed a Border Police officer near Beita in southern Nablus, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society said.

The society said that the teenager, identified as Ahmad Kamil Rafeeq al-Taj , was shot multiple times.

Ambulance staff tried to resuscitate the teen, but he succumbed to his wounds, the society said.

An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that Israeli forces shot a Palestinian, alleging that he stabbed and injured an Israeli Border Police officer.

They added that the police officer was being treated.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian after he stabbed a Border Police officer near Beita in southern Nablus, Palestinian medics and Israeli police said.

Israeli police identified him as 21-year-old Rafeeq Kamil Rafeeq al-Taj , based on his identity card.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society earlier identified him incorrectly as his younger 16-year-old brother, Ahmad al-Taj.

Medics from the society who arrived on the scene said that Taj was shot five times.

Abdelhalim Jaafreh, head of the Red Crescent in Nablus, said, “He was critically wounded by five bullets. We tried to save him but he died.”

      Israeli police confirmed Taj’s death.

A police spokesperson said that Israeli forces opened fire on him after he stabbed a border police officer in the back.

The policeman, who was on patrol with other officers, was lightly wounded, police said.

  • Pas de cessez-le-feu sans la justice pour Gaza !
    http://www.info-palestine.eu/spip.php?article14754
jeudi 24 juillet 2014 - The Electronic Intifada

  • They came, they razed, they left: A visit to a destroyed Palestinian village - Twilight Zone
    Haaretz
By Gideon Levy and Alex Levac | Apr. 12, 2014

    http://www.haaretz.com/weekend/twilight-zone/.premium-1.585009

Israel is continuing to destroy systematically the villages of shepherds who live in the Jordan Rift. Last week, the Civil Administration demolished Homsa, another tiny Palestinian village. In January, 160 residents of the valley were made homeless; last year, twice as many were left homeless as in the year before.

Again the same unconscionable sights: heaps of debris, bare metal pegs lunging out of the earth, crushed fences, destroyed animal pens and squashed tin huts; remnants of personal property strewn all over; sheep wandering about looking in vain for shade; chickens pecking about; despondent shepherds; wretched sheep dogs; runny-nosed children curled up in Grandmother’s lap and merciless sun beating down.

Another Palestinian shepherd community trampled into the ground. Not the first, nor the last to meet such a fate in this hard, battered valley, whose Palestinian inhabitants Israel has set itself the goal of cleansing itself of, far from the public’s eye. Step by step, devastating act after devastating act, community after community – there are hundreds whose lives and property have been laid waste recently by the Civil Administration.

It’s the law that’s to blame, of course, the occupier’s law. It’s the law, under whose apparent aegis illegal outposts are established and legalized in the twinkling of an eye. And it’s the occupier, thanks to whose auspices these thousands of people, native sons, have neither running water nor electric power nor rights to inhabit the slopes of the verdant, flourishing Jordan Valley.

In 2013, according to United Nations data, Israel more than doubled the demolition of homes and other structures belonging to Palestinians in the valley, as compared to the previous year. Last year, 390 structures were demolished, compared to 170 in 2012, and 590 people were made homeless, compared to 160 the previous year.

The Palestinian news agency Ma’an reported that in January of this year alone, 160 more people were left to fend for themselves under the open skies, after the Civil Administration demolished their homes. On January 8, for example, Khirbet Ein Karzaliyah, home to 25 souls, 15 of them children, was razed; on January 30, the hovels of Khirbet Umm al-Jimal, where 61 people, half of them children, lived, was the victim of a similar fate.

Last week came the turn of Homsa, located in the northern part of the valley, home to four families of shepherds – a total of 30 people, 15 of them children, and some 500 head of sheep.

About half a year ago, last September, the community of Khalat Makhoul, adjacent to the settlement of Hemdat, was almost completely eradicated, leaving 12 families without shelter. The residents have since rebuilt their homes and their sheep pens, and now the community has risen again, phoenix-like, from the rubble. It’s a joyful, encouraging sight to see. New tents and tin shacks have been erected in place of the ones that were destroyed, new faucets have been connected to the water containers (of course, this site is not hooked up to the water system), plus there is solar-generated electricity in the new Khalat Makhoul.

Together with two of its residents, Burhan and Bassam Bushrat, we went this week to see what the Civil Administration had inflicted upon their neighbors, members of the Homsa community.

Immediately after the Jewish settlement of Bekaot, at the end of its well-tended rows of grape vines which are now covered with protective nets against all intruders, we turn onto a long serpentine, dirt path that ascends eastward into the hills and traverses the fields that belong to Palestinian landowners from Toubas and Tamoun; at present, the fields are being worked by local tenant farmers.

Under the blazing light, the wheat and the barley are lush and green now. On the slopes of a remote hill, in the heart of a sea of stalks, far from any other place of habitation, lie ruin and devastation. Sitting in a white tent donated by the Palestinian Red Crescent, surrounded by mounds of ruins, is Hakam Abu al-Kabash, a shepherd. The aftermath of the shock is still etched on his face. He’s 28, the father of four young children, the youngest of whom is 7 months old. He was here last week on Tuesday, just after 7 A.M., with his wife, their children and his parents when the forces of the Civil Administration swooped in to ravage his hamlet.

The troops, Israel’s agents of destruction, a fleet of about 25 vehicles including trucks and bulldozers, accompanied by Border Police and others, had come to uproot the community, on the grounds that their habitation was illegal, even though they had lived there for years, on private Palestinian land. Kabash was born here, and for the past eight years he has lived in Homsa in the heart of the wheat fields.

The act of demolition was swift; it was all over in an hour. They came, they razed, they left. According to Kabash, no one bothered to explain why. Maybe the troops were in a hurry – another tent encampment was demolished that same day, belonging to another shepherd, Abed al-Fadiya, not far away, near the settlement of Hamra.

Three days earlier, Civil Administration personnel, armed with cameras, had come to Homsa and documented what they saw, on what turned out to be the eve of its destruction. It was a bad omen. On the fateful day, the workers removed the meager household effects, cranes lifted up the huts and the pens, and the bulldozers crushed the remains, flattening the hamlet, as residents watched from the side. As easy as pie.

Not a word about this appeared in the Israeli media. I couldn’t find any mention of it this time even on websites of Israel and Palestinian human rights groups that generally report on such events. Who cares? More Palestinian rubble in the Jordan valley? Boring, routine.

“Where will the child go?” asked the neighbor from Khalat Makhoul, Burhan Bushrat, himself a study in the survival of ordeals, in reply to my question about Kabash’s infant. “The baby was here and so was his mother,” the father said in a flat tone of voice. “And now he is out in the sun.” What will you do? Kabash is taken aback by the question. “We will stay here. We will rebuild. Where can we go?”

The spokesman of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories told Haaretz this week: “This was an illegal structure [referring to Kabash’s home, although we asked about the community in general], which was built without a building permit. The request of the owner for a permit was not completed after a process of two years. With no response having been received from the owner or his representative at the institutions of the Civil Administration, it was decided to implement the demolition order on April 1.

A source within the administration explained the process in the following way: The original demolition order was issued to the structure’s owner on May 10, 2012. Prior to the owner’s appeal, which was submitted on August 2, 2012, he was given three extensions. On March 6, 2013, the owner was told he had 30 days to demolish the structure himself.

A boy loads a newborn lamb onto the back of a spluttering Subaru pickup. The sheep pen used to be here, and the tent where the family lived was over there. Grandma Jamili is sitting in the white tent of the Red Crescent and half a dozen toddlers are snuggling up to her, all of them barefoot and with runny noses, their faces covered with sores and flies. Some of the children have blonde hair and blue eyes.

The closest school is 20 kilometers away; the children are usually transported via a cart hitched to a tractor. Now they are all sleeping in the open, in the cold and in the heat, and the men watch over the sheep, which have no pen, all night. An open packet of biscuits, half eaten, protrudes from the heap of household goods they managed to salvage, along with a pair of tattered gold-colored women’s shoes. The small silver-colored suitcase in which Kabash keeps his documents is also part of the pile. A T-shirt with the words “Our Theater” emblazoned on it in Hebrew flaps on the clothesline in the spring breeze, next to a Palestinian keffiyeh.

Not far away, at the entrance to Bekaot, something different is flapping in the wind: a banner, announcing “Independence Day. 7 PM in the amphitheater. Berry Sakharoff, Knesiyat Hasechel and fireworks. The Jordan Rift. An Israeli success story.” On our Independence Day, fireworks bursting in the air in the skies over the Jordan valley will illuminate the surrounding fields on a dark and joyous night.
