  • After weeks-long manhunt, Israeli forces kill Palestinian fighter suspected of killing settler

JENIN (Ma’an) — Israeli forces assassinated Palestinian fighter Ahmad Nasser Jarrar during a wide scale military operation in the al-Yamoun town in the northern occupied West Bank district of Jenin on Tuesday at dawn.

Since an Israeli settler was shot and killed last month while driving near Nablus, Israeli forces have embarked on a manhunt for Jarrar — the alleged main suspect in the shooting — who had managed to evade capture for weeks.

In January, during a raid searching for Jarrar, Israeli forces shot and killed his cousin Ahmad Ismail Jarrar near the Jarrar family’s home in the Wadi Bruqin neighborhood of Jenin city.

On Saturday, Israeli forces shot and killed Ahmed Samir Abu Obeid, 19, during another raid on Wadi Bruqin.

The governor of the Jenin district, Ibrahim Ramadan, said in a statement on Tuesday that he was informed by the Palestinian liaison of the killing of Ahmad Jarrar, adding that his body was being held by Israel.

Ramadan added that the Israeli military operation in Jenin began around 12 a.m. across three villages of the district and ended up in the al-Yamoun town before dawn.

Israeli news website Ynet reported that around 3 a.m., the Shin Bet, Israel’s internal intelligence agency, received intelligence that Jarrar was hiding in building complex in al-Yamoun.

Israeli forces reportedly called for Jarrar to exit the building complex, and when he did not, forces launched at least one missile at the building. Shortly after the missile was fired, forces then began demolishing the building with a bulldozer.

“When Jarrar finally came out of one building, he was armed with an M-16 assault rifle and a bag full of explosives, prompting the Israeli forces to open fire and kill him,” Ynet said.

Ynet added that Israeli forces also arrested several Palestinians hwo they accused of helping Jarrar hide.

Clashes between young Palestinian men and armed Israeli forces erupted in al-Yamoun following the assassination of Jarrar.

A Red Crescent official, Mahmoud al-Saadi, told Ma’an that seven Palestinians suffered from severe tear-gas inhalation during clashes. (...)

This is the corona, an aura millions of miles thick of superheated plasma. It’s natural to assume the corona is cooler than the sun’s blazing surface. But in fact it gets hotter as it ranges outward. The Sun’s surface temperature is about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The corona can get as hot as 5.4 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Fifty Palestinians were injured with rubber-coated steel bullets while dozens others suffered from severe tear-gas inhalation as Israeli forces suppressed a march in the Madama village in southwestern Nablus in the northern West Bank. The protest was held near the village’s land that had been seized by the Israeli government to construct the illegal Israeli Yitzhar settlement.

The Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma’an that among the injured were deputy governor of Nablus Anan al-Atiri and member of the People’s Party politburo Khalid Mansour.

Protesters set off from the southern area of the village and walked towards the Yitzhar settlement with the intention of planting trees on the village’s confiscated lands.

Ihab Tahsin, a member of the Madama village council, told Ma’an “we plant these lands so our children will grow up remembering their lands and continue planting them so one day the lands will return to us.”

The governor of Nablus, Akram al-Rjoub, told Ma’an that “today we need to be in our lands, to boost our resistance and existence in the area and to empower popular resistance against the Israeli occupation forces and settlers.”

  • Israeli troops shoot Palestinian teen in the back amid firebomb plot
    http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/.premium-1.779082

Soldiers in ambush shot Murad Abu Razi while he was fleeing. He died on the spot.
Gideon Levy and Alex Levac Mar 24, 2017 5:22 PM

Last Friday night, 17-year-old Murad Abu Razi went to a party celebrating the release of a resident of his refugee camp from Israeli prison, after 13 years. The party in honor of Ismail Farjoun, who had been let out that very day, was held in the clubhouse run by the popular committee at the Al-Arroub camp, which lies on the main road between Bethlehem and Hebron. It’s a crowded, hardscrabble place where happy events are few and far between. Perhaps that’s why so many people showed up to welcome the liberated prisoner home with sweets and cries of joy.

Murad left the party in the early evening, accompanied by both his father, Yusuf, who has been hard of hearing since birth, and an uncle, Hassan, a retired teacher. Murad bade them farewell without saying where he was going. Not long afterward he was shot in the back and killed by an Israel Defense Forces soldier who had been lying in ambush.

From the clubhouse, Murad had walked toward the camp’s western edge, which is delineated by a fence, toward Highway 60. There’s a permanent IDF post there – a fortified watchtower, concrete cubes that serve as roadblocks, and an almost constant presence of soldiers. Murad was joined by four more youths his age. They carried plastic bags that held improvised Molotov cocktails of their making.

On the way the teens encountered Murad’s cousin, who prefers to remain anonymous. He is 28 and lives in a small one-room apartment situated a few dozen meters from the camp’s fence. Fearing that Murad would get into trouble, he tried to persuade him – in vain – to go home. In the meantime, two members of the group left. Now they were three, approaching the fence.

They took the firebombs out of the bags and placed them on the concrete cubes. Their plan was to throw them over the high fence that had been built years ago by the Israeli authorities in order to prevent stones and incendiary devices from being thrown at vehicles on the busy road. Parked on the other side of the fence at the time was an IDF jeep. In the dark of evening the youths didn’t notice the soldiers who were lying in ambush inside the camp.

Suddenly, from a nearby abandoned tin shack with torn, perforated walls, soldiers sprang out. Spotting them, the three teens started to run toward the camp. The soldiers shot at them from behind as they fled. Murad was hit by a single bullet in the back. One of his friends, Seif Rushdi, was also hit, in one of his legs; he lost a great deal of blood, and is now in intensive care in Hebron’s Al-Ahli Hospital and could not be visited this week. The third teenager, who was wounded lightly, did not want to identify himself, for obvious reasons.

Murad collapsed, lying in a pool of his blood. He died almost immediately.

A trail of bloodstains, still visible this week on the road, marks their path of flight. This is the camp’s main road, traversing it from west to east without any sort of sidewalk. On both sides and in adjacent alleys, it’s lined with houses and shops, all appallingly crowded together.

As we walked, from the site of Murad’s death to the building where the celebration was held for the released prisoner – which has now become a house of mourning – we were engulfed by hundreds of children, who were just getting out of school. In light of the fact that six of Al-Arroub’s residents have been killed in the past two years, it was impossible to avoid wondering how many of the children who were streaming past would share a similar fate.

We had begun our visit at the end of the road, on the outskirts of the camp near the fence and the concrete cubes, where two soldiers were eating a meal from disposable aluminum trays. Maybe they’re the ones who shot Murad. Soldiers are posted at every entrance to the camp and in the watchtower that looms above it. To evade them, we left our vehicle at the car wash near one of the entrances and quickly stole into the camp on foot.

Murad’s cousin invited us for coffee in his tiny room, which resembled a beach hut, though in his case it’s accessed through a junkyard. An old television was tuned to an Egyptian movie channel, a pack of painkillers lay on the table along with the remnants of a snack. There was also an unmade steel bed and a wall painting of the Lebanese singer Fairuz as a young woman and next to it a quote from one of her best-known songs: “You are my prison, you are my freedom.” The cousin’s car is draped with posters commemorating the dead youth. He was the last person to see Murad alive.

Murad was shot at 8:40 P.M. on Friday, apparently from a distance of about 15-20 meters. He was obviously not endangering the soldiers as he fled. He managed to lunge forward after being shot, before he collapsed. He fell at the foot of the wall decorated with the image of Che Guevara, such as exists in almost every refugee camp, near a local medical laboratory. On the road we found a red casing with the inscription, “Stun grenade. Delay 3.5 seconds.”

Murad had run along the left side of the road, with Seif on the right side; paths of bloody drops are splattered on both sides of the road. The two must both have lost a great deal of blood. The cousin, hearing a woman shouting, said that he went outside and saw Murad lying in a pool of blood. The driver of a private car took the youth to Sa’ir Junction, where he was transferred to a Palestinian ambulance that rushed him to the hospital in Hebron.

A scratchy loudspeaker at the Popular Front clubhouse is blaring out Palestinian war songs from the period of the Lebanon War and the Israeli siege of Beirut. This is where the mourners were accepting condolences from camp residents, who arrived in a steady stream. Here, too, is where Murad attended his last celebration. When we got there, on Monday, a delegation from the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah was just arriving. Murad’s father, who, in addition to being hard of hearing, has a speech impediment as well, shook the sympathizers’ hands mutely. He’s in a very bad way, his brother, Hassan, tells us. Murad was the youngest of his nine children.

The hall is adorned with photographs of Murad, yellow Fatah flags and images of the late PLO leader Yasser Arafat. There’s also a photo of PA President Mahmoud Abbas. As is the custom, young people – wearing shirts with the deceased’s photo emblazoned on them – offer dates and bitter coffee to those who come to pay condolences. The arrival of the PA delegation is announced. Faces are grim.

Murad’s uncle, Hassan Abu Razi, takes us up to the second floor, where it’s quieter. He tells us that his nephew was already wanted by the Israeli authorities as a boy, for frequently throwing stones. Murad dropped out of school in the 10th grade and at the age of 13 or 14, was already hiding out and sleeping in various places in the camp. One time he was hit by an IDF jeep but wasn’t injured. Soldiers frequently came to his house looking for him. He had spent four months in jail.

Hassan tells us about the grinding poverty of his brother’s family, which mostly lives off charity. It was in this clubhouse where he saw his nephew for the last time. Murad behaved normally that evening, his uncle recalls, and said nothing about his plans. Hassan himself was in Hebron when his wife called him later with the dreadful news. He hurried to the hospital, first to the wrong one and then to Al-Ahli, where Murad had already been pronounced dead, at 9:15 P.M. The Palestinian media initially said that two people had been killed; the mistake was later corrected.

The hospital wanted to perform an autopsy but Hassan objected. Murad was already dead, he says, so what good would that do? He was shown the body: a hole in the back and a hole in the chest. From the medical report: “The wounded individual arrived at the ER in a Red Crescent ambulance after being shot by the occupation army. He was unconscious and had no pulse. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. After an examination we found that he had been shot with one bullet that entered his back and exited via the chest, on the left side.”

The IDF Spokesman’s Unit told Haaretz this week: “A Military Police investigation was opened in the wake of the event, and upon its conclusion, the findings will be conveyed to the office of the military advocate general for examination.”

    • Israel continues to hold body of slain Palestinian activist Basel al-Araj
      March 10, 2017 3:49 P.M. (Updated: March 10, 2017 3:49 P.M.)
      http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=775882

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli authorities postponed on Friday returning the body of slain Palestinian activist Basel al-Araj until further notice, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said in statement.

According to the statement, Israel had announced on Thursday to return al-Araj’s body at a checkpoint near his home town of al-Walaja, near Bethlehem in the southern occupied West Bank Friday afternoon.

Al-Araj, 31, was killed by Israeli forces Monday in a two-hour shootout at a home in the outskirts of the Qaddura refugee camp, where al-Araj was staying.

The activist had been on the run from Israeli authorities since September, when he was released from Palestinian prison after being detained without charges or explanation for five months, during which he joined a hunger strike amid reports of torture and mistreatment.

Israeli police had accused al-Araj of being the “head of a terrorist cell that planned attacks against Israelis and security forces.”

Al-Araj’s killing has sparked outrage as some Palestinians have raised questions about the Israeli police narrative that it would have been difficult for al-Araj to return fire for two hours, noting that the house was completely riddled with Israeli bullets, and have highlighted that the man — well known in his community as an intellectual and an activist — did not fit the typical profile of an attacker.(...)

      Monday, 06 March 2017
In the dawn hours, Israeli forces killed Basel Mahmoud Ibrahim al-A’raj (33), who is from al-Walajah village, west of Bethlehem, but lived in al-Shurafah neighbourhood in al-Birah. The Israeli media claimed that al-A’raj opened fire at the Israeli soldiers, who raided his house, so they shot him dead and took his body to an unknown destination. According to PCHR’s investigation and eyewitnesses, at approximately 01:30 on the same day, the Israeli forces accompanied with several military vehicles moved into al-Birah and stationed on al-Ma’aref Street in al-Shurafah neighbourhood. The soldiers used a police dog and raided and searched a house belonging to Ahmed Hamdi Bastami after breaking the main door of the house, which was adjacent to Basel al-A’raj’s house. The soldiers stayed in Bastami’s house for about 10 minutes and then moved directly to Basel’s house. They broke the main door amidst shooting at him. Eyewitnesses said to PCHR’s fieldworker that they heard a sound of 3 to 4 salvos. Few minutes later, they heard a loud explosion and thought it was a sound of a shell from a shoulder-fired weapon inside the house. In the meantime, a number of young men gathered and threw stones and empty bottles at the Israeli soldiers, who immediately fired live bullets at the young men in response. As a result, 2 civilians were hit with bullets to the lower limbs. Later, the Israeli forces withdrew and took al-A’raj’s body to an unknown destination. It should be noted that al-A’raj was pursued by the Israeli forces after he disappeared along with a number of his friends in the end of last March for several weeks. Basel was then accused of preparing to carry out an attack against the Israeli forces.

  • Red Crescent: Israeli forces shoot, kill Palestinian teen during clashes in Tuqu

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian teenager during clashes in the Bethlehem-area village of Tuqu in the southern occupied West Bank on Monday evening, the Palestinian Red Crescent (PRC) ambulance service said.

A PRC spokesperson told Ma’an that 17-year-old Qusay Hasna al-Umour was shot with live ammunition in the chest at least three times, and that Israeli forces had detained him for an unspecified period of time before handing over his body to the health organization.

It remained unclear whether al-Umour was already dead when Israeli forces got a hold of him, or if he succumbed to his injuries while in custody.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that they were looking into the reports.

Four other Palestinians, including a woman, were also shot and injured during the clashes.

Locals told Ma’an that clashes broke out near the western entrance of the village on Monday afternoon, with Israeli forces firing live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and tear gas at Palestinian youth.

Doctors who examined the teenager’s body at al-Hussein Hospital in Beit Jala told Ma’an they counted six bullet holes in al-Umour’s chest and lower extremities.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that “violent riots” erupted in Tuqu with “hundreds” of Palestinian youth throwing stones at Israeli border police.

“Israeli border police fired 0.22-caliber rounds towards the main instigator, resulting in his death,” the spokesperson said, adding that no Israelis were wounded during the clashes.

However, a video of the events taken by Palestinian journalist Hisham Abu Sharqah immediately after al-Umour was shot seemingly contradicted the Israeli army’s allegation that al-Umour was the “main instigator” in the clashes.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The early morning traffic began to ease as the funeral procession departed from Bethlehem’s city limits, and cars sped up on their way to the nearby village of Tuqu, in the southern occupied West Bank.

“Look, look,” said one of the drivers in the funeral procession, pointing upwards to a group of Israeli soldiers stationed on the hill just above the shared Palestinian-Israeli settler road. “They’re trying to provoke us.”

As traffic slowed for a moment, young men — residents of Tuqu where 17-year-old Qusay al-Umour
was shot dead less than 24 hours earlier — hopped out of their vehicles to grab stones from the side of the road and hurl them as far as they could at the soldiers, not knowing if one of them had shot the four fatal bullets that killed their friend.

Women and children gathered on rooftops, passersby honked their horns, and young men hung out of the windows of speeding cars waving Palestinian and Fatah flags, with pictures of al-Umour, the latest “martyr,” taped to the backs of their cars. (...)

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian rights group slammed on Wednesday the killing of a Palestinian teen by Israeli forces earlier this week, calling the case an “extrajudicial killing” and demanding that Israeli authorities open an investigation into the case.

Qusay al-Umour, 17, was killed during clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian youth in the Bethlehem-area village of Tuqu in the occupied West Bank on Monday.

Video of the moments immediately following al-Umour being shot by Israeli forces has elicited a strong emotional response, as it showed Israeli soldiers roughly carrying the teenager’s limp body by his dangling arms and legs.

Legal NGO BADIL said in a statement on Wednesday that the footage provided “evidence contradicting Israeli accounts and raises concerns about the adherence of the Israeli forces to the central tenets of international law.”(...)

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — A 20-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli forces Tuesday night during clashes that erupted in the town of Silwan in occupied East Jerusalem just south of the Old City, amid ongoing violent police raids in the Jerusalem area.

Ali Atef Shyoukhi was shot and critically injured with live fire during clashes at around 11 p.m., with Israeli forces also firing rubber-coated steel bullets and tear-gas canisters at Palestinian youth who responded with fireworks and Molotov cocktails, reportedly causing a military jeep to catch on fire.

The 20-year-old man succumbed to his wounds after minutes, as Israeli police closed off the area to traffic and pedestrians, denying the access of ambulances to arrive to the scene to treat him.

A spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma’an that their ambulance crews were repeatedly searched and harassed by Israeli forces as they were prevented from accessing Shyoukhi, and were thus unable to confirm the details of his fatal injuries.

However, according to the local organization the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, Shyoukhi was shot in the stomach, while state-run news agency Wafa reported that he was shot in the chest.

HEBRON (Ma’an) — Israeli soldiers killed a Palestinian minor and detained another in the occupied West Bank town of Halhul north of Hebron when the two were reportedly throwing Molotov cocktails at vehicles, Israel’s army and witnesses said.

“During routine activity to secure Route 60,” Israeli forces spotted two suspects attempting to throw Molotov cocktails at vehicles on the highway, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an.

The forces then opened fire on the suspects, killing one and detaining another, the spokesperson said.

Witnesses told Ma’an that they saw a child lying on the ground after hearing gunshots where Israeli forces were deployed in the al-Hawawer area of Halhul city. One witness told Ma’an that they saw Israeli soldiers putting the child into a black bag.

Another child was seen handcuffed and blindfolded.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that paramedics were prevented by Israeli soldiers from reaching the scene and from treating those potentially injured.

The child killed was identified as 14-year-old Haitham Ismail al-Baw . His cousin, Wajdi Yusif al-Baw ,12, was reportedly injured during the incident.

HEBRON (Ma’an) — A 19-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed in al-Arrub refugee camp in northern Hebron on Thursday during clashes, medics told Ma’an, the 3rd Palestinian to be killed during the day.

Red Crescent officials said that Khalid Mahmoud al-Jawabreh , 19, was shot twice in the stomach by Israeli soldiers and later died from his injuries in the al-Ahli hospital in Hebron.

The teenager was shot during clashes in the camp between youths and armed Israeli military forces.

An Israeli army spokesperson said “a Palestinian with a lit Molotov cocktail in hand attempted to hit vehicles off route 60 in the area of al-Arrub, forces on site responded to the immediate threat, shooting .22 calibre rounds, thwarting the attack.”

The main entrance to al-Arrub camp has been entirely closed for the past few days, with soldiers deployed at other entrances and in surrounding areas.

An ambulance attempting to reach al-Jawabreh was forced to take a lengthy route to arrive at the scene of the shooting.

Al-Arrub refugee camp lies along Route 60, a major West Bank road that Israeli settlers regularly use to reach a cluster of illegal Israeli settlements in Hebron, and the camp has been site to frequent clashes with Israeli military over the past month.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a young Palestinian man in the village of Beit Einun east of Hebron after an alleged stabbing attempt, Palestinian and Israeli sources said.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that Israeli forces shot the Palestinian after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli soldier during a “violent riot” in the village. The spokesperson said no Israelis were injured.

A paramedic from the Red Crescent said Israeli forces would not allow their medics to examine the young man.

“Israeli soldiers forced us at gunpoint to leave the area,” the paramedic said. “From the amount of bleeding, the young man must have been shot several times.”

A Palestinian witness told Ma’an he saw Israeli troops firing several rounds at a “young man” who was “far” from the main street. The witness said the young man fell to the ground before Israeli soldiers surrounded him.

Israeli soldiers covered the body with black plastic before taking the body away in a military ambulance to unknown destination, witnesses said.

Witnesses added that Israeli forces also assaulted journalists who tried to come close to scene, forcing them to leave the area.

The death of the unidentified Palestinian brings the total number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the start of last month to 70.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Two Palestinians were shot in the Nablus district on Friday after allegedly attempting to stab an Israeli border policeman at a military checkpoint, Israel’s army said.

An Israeli army spokesperson said two Palestinians tried to stab an Israeli border policeman at the Tappuah, or Zatara, checkpoint south of Nablus, with both attackers shot.

Israeli police confirmed that one Palestinian was killed and the other man shot and “captured,” with his condition thought to be critical.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the man killed as Qassem Mahmoud Sabaneh from Jenin.

Director of the ambulance and emergency unit of the Red Crescent, Abed al-Halim Jafreh, told Ma’an that medics treated the critically injured man at the scene.

Sabaneh died from multiple gunshot wounds, he added, with medics prohibited from reaching his body.

The area, including the checkpoint, was closed following the incident.

The two men had reportedly arrived at the checkpoint on a motorcycle before attempting to attack an Israeli officer.

    http://www.romandie.com/news/Tensions-toujours-aussi-vives-en-Cisjordanie-et-a-JerusalemEst/636118.rom

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A 12-year-old Palestinian boy was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers during clashes in Aida refugee camp in Bethlehem on Monday, Palestinian medics told Ma’an.

Abed al-Rahman Shadi Obeidallah, 12, was shot near the heart by Israeli forces during clashes in the refugee camp.

He was taken in a civilian car to Beit Jala hospital where he immediately underwent surgery. However, doctors later pronounced him dead.

Another teenager was reportedly shot with live fire in the leg during the same clashes and taken to hospital for treatment, locals said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said she was looking into the reports.

Overnight Sunday, Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian teenager during clashes in the northern West Bank village of Bala, east of Tulkarem.

Red Crescent officials told Ma’an that 18-year-old Huthayfa Othman Suleiman was shot in the chest during clashes and died in the operating room.

The killings follow violent confrontations over the weekend in which the Palestinian Red Crescent documented at least 96 Palestinians who were wounded by live rounds or rubber-coated steel bullets in clashes with Israeli forces and settlers.

Overnight Saturday, Fadi Samir Mustafa Alloun , 19, from the East Jerusalem village of al-Issawiya, was shot dead by Israeli forces after allegedly attempting to stab a group of Israelis.

The incident took place just hours after another Palestinian was shot dead when he stabbed and possibly opened fire on a family of Israelis at the Old City’s Lion’s Gate.

Two Israelis were killed and two others injured, including a two-year-old infant, in the attack.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Palestine Red Crescent Society on Sunday declared a state of emergency across the occupied Palestinian territory following an upsurge in violence by Israeli soldiers and settlers, including 14 attacks on the society’s ambulances in just three days.

The society said in a statement that it was declaring a level 3 state of emergency and putting all its staff, teams and volunteers on standby.

The society decried Israeli violations of international humanitarian law, saying that over 72 hours, it had faced 14 attacks against its staff and vehicles “in a serious escalation of violations against PRCS, its teams and the humanitarian services they render.”

Most recently, the statement said that Israeli soldiers attacked one of the society’s ambulances while tending to injured Palestinians during clashes in front of al-Quds university’s Abu Dis campus earlier on Sunday.

Two days earlier, the statement said that Israeli forces attacked an ambulance in al-Issawiya village in occupied East Jerusalem, before they “proceeded to arrest an injured Palestinian from inside the ambulance.”

Separately on Friday, the windshield of another ambulance was smashed by settlers in Burin village in Nablus, preventing it from “discharging its humanitarian duty.”

The society said that on Saturday, five paramedics “were beaten up by soldiers in Jerusalem,” while Israeli forces also attacked an ambulance crew with batons in Jerusalem’s Old City.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian after he stabbed a Border Police officer near Beita in southern Nablus, Palestinian medics and Israeli police said.

Israeli police identified him as 21-year-old Rafeeq Kamil Rafeeq al-Taj , based on his identity card.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society earlier identified him incorrectly as his younger 16-year-old brother, Ahmad al-Taj.

Medics from the society who arrived on the scene said that Taj was shot five times.

Abdelhalim Jaafreh, head of the Red Crescent in Nablus, said, “He was critically wounded by five bullets. We tried to save him but he died.”

      Israeli police confirmed Taj’s death.

A police spokesperson said that Israeli forces opened fire on him after he stabbed a border police officer in the back.

The policeman, who was on patrol with other officers, was lightly wounded, police said.
