  • Distinguished Lebanese poet Said Akl dies at 102
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/distinguished-lebanese-poet-said-akl-dies-102

Famous for his radical Lebanese nationalism, Akl, also known as the “Little Poet,” promoted the use of Lebanese dialect written in modified Roman script rather than the modern standard Arabic and alphabet.

He was defined by his Phoenician-centered nationalism, which made him popular among many Lebanese and controversial among others.

After having left the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, Akl became one of the leaders of the Guardians of the Cedars, a radical nationalist political party created during the Lebanese Civil War which welcomed the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, seeing it as a golden opportunity for forcing Palestinians out of Lebanon.

Considered one of the most notable modern Lebanese poets, Akl wrote in Arabic and French. His poetical works include “The Jasmine Bells,” “Poems from Her Notebook,” “Like Pillars,” and “Carving in Light.”

Legendary Lebanese singer Fairouz sang more than a dozen of his poems such as “Roddani Ila Biladi” (Take Me Back to my Country), “Ghanaytu Mekka” (I sang to Mekka), “Ummi ya Malaki” (My Mother, My Angel), and “Kara’tu Majdaka” (I Read your Glory).

Sectarian system, familial ties keep Lebanese women locked out of politics
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/sectarian-system-familial-ties-keep-lebanese-women-locked-out-pol

The parties that were chosen were: the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, the Phalange Party, the Progressive Socialist Party, Hezbollah, the Lebanese Communist Party and the Future Movement.

The study shows that one or two women are represented in each party’s leadership body. None of the parties that were studied adopted a quota for women in their internal organization, 33 percent absolutely rejected a women’s quota, 50 percent appointed women in some leadership positions and 16.6 percent nominated women for parliamentary elections.

The study concluded that the sectarian political system affects women’s overall political participation and that the familial, partisan and sectarian system that governs municipal, mayoral and parliamentary elections is not friendly to women, but rather discriminates against them. Political parties take into account the families and the system that govern representation in the municipal elections and sects in the parliamentary elections at the expense of women.

The study recommended that political parties support the presence of women; empower their female members; advance their capabilities; raise awareness among party members about the importance of the role of women and their active participation; encourage women; allow them to reach decision-making positions; adopt a quota for women in party elections; adopt women’s issues and not confine them to female party members only nor to women’s committees; nominate women in municipal and parliamentary elections and finally, female party members should seek to impose women’s issues on their political parties’ agendas.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sana%27a_Mehaidli

Sana’a Mehaidli (Arabic: سناء محيدلي August 14, 1968 - April 9, 1985) was a member of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party who, at the age of 17, blew herself and a Peugeot filled with explosives up next to an Israeli convoy in Jezzin, South Lebanon, during the Israeli occupation of south Lebanon. Two Israeli soldiers were killed and twelve were injured.

Sana’a Yousef Mehaidli was born in the village of Ankoun, near Sidon, in Lebanon. She has four brothers and one sister. She worked at a video store, where she later recorded her will. In early 1985, she joined the Syrian Social Nationalist Party that was affiliated with The Lebanese National Resistance Front.

She is believed to have been the first female suicide bomber. She is known as “the Bride of the South”.

  • Fusillade mortelle au Liban
    http://www.francetv.fr/info/fusillade-mortelle-au-liban_98655.html

The incident occurred next to the headquarters of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), but despite early fears, the SSNP appeared not to get involved in the clashes, according to an Al-Akhbar correspondent at the scene.

      […]

It was not immediately clear what caused the fighting, but anonymous security and intelligence sources on the ground alleged that Syrian opposition members were among the gunmen.

  • Son of SSNP leader slain in Syria
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/content/son-ssnp-leader-slain-syria

The son of a prominent political leader in Syria was assassinated overnight along with a fellow party member in another blow to UN peace efforts attempting to stabilize the country after one year of violence.

Ismail Haidar, son of Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) President Ali Haidar, and Fadi Atawneh was killed on the al-Mahnaya junction on the road between Homs and Masyaf, according to Syria’s official news agency, SANA.

      http://angryarab.blogspot.fr/2012/05/ismail-haydar.html

The assassination of Isma’il Haydar (the son of the leader of a splinter faction of the Syrian Social National Party) in Syria yesterday is significant. The party is a legal opposition party and is accommodating of the regime, but the leader does not shy away from criticizing strongly the Syrian regime but does not call for its overthrow. They were vocal critics of the regime when others were serving the regime, although I personally don’t trust all the “legal opposition” in Syria. I think that the Free Syrian Army and its affiliated gangs want to kill all leaders of the local opposition in Syria, to serve their exile sponsors.

  • Obama extends assets freeze on figures ‘destabilizing’ Lebanon - Daily Star
    http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Politics/2011/Jul-29/Obama-extends-assets-freeze-on-figures-destabilizing-Lebanon.ashx

United States President Barack Obama Thursday extended a freeze on assets of persons threatening stability in Lebanon, targeting those seeking “to undermine Lebanon’s legitimate and democratically elected government.”

    [...]

On Aug. 2, 2007, President George W. Bush ordered a freeze on the U.S. assets of anyone Washington deems to be undermining Lebanon’s pro-Western government.

    [...]

The Lebanese officials listed included former ministers Abdel-Rahim Mrad, Assad Hardan of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, Assem Qanso of the Baath Party, Wiam Wahhab, Michel Samaha, and former MP Nasser Qandil.

OK.
