The planet’s largest mangrove forest could be facing serious trouble in the form of two new coal-fired power plants, environmentalists say — and they’re urging the United Nations to draw greater attention to the issue.

A handful of environmental groups, including Friends of the Earth, the Sierra Club and 350.org, have cumulatively collected 50,000 signatures on a petition just submitted to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) asking that the Sundarbans — a region of #Bangladesh including a designated World Heritage Site — be placed on the official List of World Heritage in Danger. Meanwhile, activists continue to lobby against the construction of the power plants.

The most recently proposed project is the Orion power plant, a 630-megawatt plant being planned by the Orion Group. But the project receiving the most attention is the proposed Rampal power plant, which involves a partnership between India’s state-owned National Thermal Power Corp. and the Bangladesh Power Development Board. The joint venture, which was established in 2012, is known as the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Co. Ltd., or BIFPCL. The plan for the Rampal power plant is an installed capacity of 1,320 megawatts.

The Sundarbans

The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world (140,000 ha), lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India’s Sundarbans World Heritage site inscribed in 1987. The site is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python.

Science, technology and innovation (STI) are key drivers of economic growth. Recognising the potential, many countries have set targets for the share of national wealth to be devoted to research and experimental development (R&D). R&D indicators can be used to monitor and benchmark progress towards these targets, while providing the information needed to set constructive policies and stimulate the expansion of R&D.

The eAtlas of Research and Experimental Development lets you explore and adapt maps, charts and ranking tables for more than 75 indicators on the human and financial resources devoted to R&D. Trends in STI are revealed through data on educational qualifications of researchers, their global distribution, sector which employs them, and the fields of science pursued in research. The eAtlas presents a breakdown of financing – who is funding research and which sectors spend the most money on research. It also includes historical data to track trends over time and measure the impact of policies. Many indicators are disaggregated by sex to better evaluate the role of women in science.

This eAtlas has been produced by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics (UIS), which collects R&D data for more than 200 countries and territories through its annual survey and partnerships with organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), the Ibero-American and Inter-American Network for Science and Technology Indicators (RICYT) and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (African Union).

With over 120 maps, charts and tables, the #UNESCO World Atlas of Gender Equality in Education enables readers to visualize the educational pathways of girls and boys in terms of access, participation and progression from pre-primary to tertiary education.

The Atlas features a wide range of sex-disaggregated data and gender indicators from the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. It also illustrates the extent to which gender disparities in education have changed since 1970 and are shaped by factors such as national wealth, geographic location, investment in education and fields of study.

Also planned for mid-2012 is an online data mapping tool for tracking trends over time, adapting the maps and exporting the data
