    What do a Norwegian terrorist, a rightist politician in The Netherlands, some American think tanks and an editor of The Broker share in common? They all assign an important role to the work of Antonio Gramsci in the making of contemporary politics.

    Gramsci?

    Who but a few history buffs today has even heard of this Italian Marxist, who died in 1937 as a prisoner of the Fascist regime. Apparently Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik has, and so has Martin Bosma, the spin doctor of the Dutch rightist party PVV, as well as William S. Lind, an American publicist and promoter of cultural conservatism.

    #norvège #oslo #breivik

    The undersigned, now editor of The Broker, was once a devoted scholar of Gramsci. At the University of Amsterdam and also at York University in Toronto, Canada, I took part in exchanges among a group of International Relations students who identified themselves with ‘neo-Gramscian analysis’. I still consider the work of Gramsci a source of inspiration. In my view, Gramsci’s notes on power, in particular his concept of hegemony, and his historical analysis of state-society relations continue to bear relevance today.

  • They are all terrorists
    http://www.blacklooks.org/2011/08/they-are-all-terrorists

    When most of us hear the word terrorist this is the picture that forms in our heads because it is the most flagged stereotype.

    The word terror existed before the terms terrorist or terrorism were created. The Oxford dictionary describes terror as ‘a feeling of extreme fear.’ The Cambridge Smart Thesaurus explains it as violent action which causes extreme fear. The Cambridge Thesaurus goes on to explain that terror is synonymous with fear, panic, fright, horror and dread. The Collins English Dictionary describes terror as great fear, panic or dread inspired by a troublesome person. The definitions of terror cannot get any better than these three sources, or at least my Advanced Level English Literature teacher, Miss Mpeti would say so. I believed and do still believe her.

    Using these definitions, it means that any person who commits acts or threatens to commit acts that instill fear, horror and panic in people is committing terror and is therefore a terrorist. So from:

    Osama Bin Laden (considered to be the worst terrorist ever) who took out the twin towers and killed many in the USA;
    Al Qaeda who burn whole villages in Afghanistan and Pakistan;
    Joseph Kony who killed, raped and maimed civilians in Northern Uganda and continue doing so in parts of Southern Sudan and the DRC;
    Omar Al Bashir who killed, displaced, and instigated the rape and are still killing, displacing and instigating the rape thousands in Darfur, South Kordofan and South Sudan;
    George Bush responsible for wars that caused and still cause the death and maiming of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan;
    Benjamin Netanyau and his Israeli government who have caused great suffering on Palestinian civilians;
    Retaliating Palestinian Liberation Organisation members who attack Israelis with suicide bombers;
    Genociders in Germany in particular the Holocaust by Nazis, Rwanda 1994, Zimbabwe in the Gukurahundi 1987 and Operation Mavhoterapapi 2008, Cambodia mass killing by the Khmer Rouge, Indonesian slaughter of the East Timorese;
    Al-Shabab attackers on Uganda in July 2010;
    Individuals responsible for the numerous bomb blasts in Nigeria, India, Pakistan;
    Umar Farouk, the Nigerian who attempted to detonate bombs in an aeroplane and;
    Anders Behring Breivik the Norwegian man who killed more than 87 of his own people they are all terrorists.

  • L’extrême droite européenne face aux attentats en Norvège | VISA Vigilance Initiatives Syndicales Antifascistes
    http://www.visa-isa.org/node/4549

  • LabourList : A warning shot « jonesblog
    http://owenjones.org/2011/08/02/labourlist-a-warning-shot

    For many commentators – such as Boris Johnson – Anders Behring Breivik was nothing more than a deranged, lone gunman. There is no point, they argue, even attempting to understand the motivations behind such an appalling act of violence: he is quite patently mad. These are not excuses ever granted to Islamic fundamentalist terrorists. As Luke Akehurst has so movingly put it, Friday’s massacre was an act of political terrorism. It was, in part, an attempt to wipe out the next generation of left-wing leaders, and even to frighten people out of joining the Norwegian Labour Party.

    According to Janne Kristiansen of the Norwegian intelligence services: “…in my opinion this is clearly a sane person because he has been too focused for far too long and he has been doing things so correctly.” Breivik’s lawyer looks set to plead insanity on behalf of his client, but I hope this argument is thrown out of court. Human history is littered with horrifying crimes committed by (coldly) rational, sane human beings. The Holocaust is surely the most stomach-churning example because it happened on a systematic, industrialised, mass scale – and was a perverse enterprise that involved hundreds of thousands of people.

    The European far-right used to target Jews and black people: today, it is Muslims. In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders – who heads the third biggest party – campaigns against the “Islamisation of the Netherlands”, compares the Koran to Mein Kampf and wants to send Muslims out of the country. In France, the Front National also targets Muslims – but the mainstream right has also tapped into Islamophobic sentiments with the banning of the burka. In Switzerland, the People’s Party – who topped the vote in an election attacked as racist by UN monitors – led a successful campaign to ban minarets.

    Here in Britain, Muslims have been the the British National Party’s target of choice for years. The last BNP manifesto pledged to confront ‘the Islamic Colonisation of Britain’, and BNP leaflets attack Muslims in the most vitriolic terms.

    Anti-Semitism once draped itself in anti-capitalist clothes by talking about Jewish bankers. That’s why the German socialist August Bebel called anti-Semitism “the socialism of fools”. And, today, all too often Islamophobia dresses itself up as secularism: it has become the “secularism of fools”.

  • Edinburgh Anarchist Federation » Norway and the rise of “acceptable racism.”
    http://edinburghanarchists.noflag.org.uk/2011/08/norway-and-the-rise-of-acceptable-racism-2

    I’m sure many of you watched the scenes taking placed in Norway with horror and rightly so.

    Particularly disturbing was the knee jerk reaction, reminiscent of the news coverage following the immediate aftermath of the Oklahoma bombings, the continual repetition that the incident had all the characteristics of an Islamist plot. The “gates of Vienna” mindset tirades posted in the comments sections of online coverage (before they apprehended the white blonde suspect) made for particularly infuriating reading; page upon page of ranting amounting to nothing less than an incitement towards a Muslim/Asian Pogrom. This prejudged notion of Muslim involvement lasted right up until the shocked exclamations that the gunman was blonde and of Norwegian appearance. The Daily Express still couldn’t resist putting in a section about Jihadists and cartoons of the prophet Muhammed the next day despite contrary evidence, and The Sun went with the even crasser “Al-Qaeda Massacre, Norway’s 9/11.” This coverage is merely a manifestation of a wider arching problem created by an amalgamation of factors created by politicians, the media and the far right all pursuing their own particular agendas which happen to have a convergence of mutual interest. There is clearly a double standard involved in the reporting of terrorism in the mainstream media largely dependent upon motives and perceived aims. A clear example of this is the coverage of the Tea Party inspired would-be assassin of U.S congresswomen Gabrielle Gifford, Jared Loughner. Despite having clear political affiliations and using means that would be classed as terrorism by even the loosest of definitions applied to Islamic Extremists, he was barely ever described as such. The subsequent coverage followed the paradigm and similar characterisation of Timothy McVeigh, David Copeland (the Soho bomber) and undoubtedly Anders Behring Breivik; that of the insane lone gunman.

    There appears to be reluctance in the immediate coverage following the Norway bombing and shooting to call him for what he is, namely a right wing, Christian, conservative terrorist inspired by the resurgence of the far right in Europe and America. Despite clear right wing allegiances the media have persisted in portraying him as an insane individual and shown little will to analyse the underlying causes and factors which drove Breivik to commit these atrocities; such as their own innately Islamophobic and disproportionate news coverage of terrorism plots. Twitter and Facebook posts by Breivik have shown his admiration for the Tea Party movement and advocated a cultural European movement founded upon a similar basis. In his posts he also talks of starting a “cultural defence” street movement largely inspired by our very own EDL with whom he had contact. As anarchists we should be above the exploitation of human suffering in order to gain political brownie points, however there is a clear link between the concessions made to the new forms of “acceptable racism” since 2001 and its tacit acceptance by mainstream culture that has led to a legitimisation of such views which must be pointed out. With so much deference to authority people still often look to mainstream culture and figures to gauge which views are socially acceptable and which ones are not. The platform given to groups such as the EDL and BNP has allowed their lies to become acceptable norms, of which the aforementioned media coverage and continual emphasis on the ethnicity of the perpetrator are just one manifestation. This acceptance has been endorsed by politicians who seek to politically posture as tough by using immigration as a vote winner (See Black Flag Issue 232 “Victims of the political game.”), keep people occupied with banalities and garner support for unpopular foreign policy by dehumanising the “enemy.” With David Cameron even making dangerous speeches such as his infamous “multiculturalism has failed,” speech on the day of a major EDL mobilisation in Luton. Cameron and the Tories (not renowned for their tolerance) have literally handed the far right PR material; parts of the speech were even quoted on National Front literature in the Scottish Elections last May. The media pander to this type of sentiment and even, debatably, cause it in part with their sensationalist stories and even outright lies to sell papers. They then feign ignorance at what could have possibly driven this cultural nationalist to fear for the future of his culture and country so much so that he would resort to such abhorrent acts in an effort to help his country?

    Together politicians and the media have created an atmosphere where prejudice sells, which is becoming evident with the far right making gains throughout Europe and creating a popular “European Caliphate” and “demographic time bomb” myth, which is now permeating itself into society as a legitimate view. This Norwegian incident and the attack on Gabrielle Gifford should draw attention to the difference between free speech and incitement to attacks on minority populations and politicians who, meaning well, may be defending multiculturalism. I also hope this will clearly indicate the pitfalls of tolerating bigotry in the name of freedom of speech and act as a catalyst towards the rejection of the edifices of “respectable racism” such as the BNP and EDL. I can already see their counter argument to the idea that Breivik’s actions are a manifestation of the vicious myths and lies they spread: this was one unrepresentative isolated incident, not all nationalists are extremists, the irony of which appears to be lost on nationalists and the far right.

    “The central question still remains,” Jeremy Paxman began on BBC Newsnight last night, “was this the action of a solitary, deranged individual, or do his actions reflect a wider unease both in Norway and perhaps beyond, about immigration and asylum seekers, which people like Breivik can exploit?” The third, and most obvious answer is left ignored; that Breivik was a white supremacist emboldened by the right-wing, Islamophobic rhetoric of European governments. When Muslim extremists commit atrocities, their entire ideology, beliefs and even religion are examined, analysed and condemned, but in the case of Breivik, his are real problems in society that one man took too far. Indeed, if this had been carried out by a Muslim attacker, or any person with brown skin, we would currently be witnessing a media frenzy of racist and xenophobic propaganda. Because Breivik is a white, Christian, European man, only the individual, and not those elements of his identity, is blamed.

  • The Ideological Roots of the Oslo Atrocity | Mostly Water
    http://mostlywater.org/ideological_roots_oslo_atrocity

    Since the attacks carried out in Oslo last Friday, there has been a concerted campaign by the bourgeois establishment in Europe to deny that the murderous rampage conducted by Anders Behring Breivik was motivated by anti-Islamist prejudices with deep roots in mainstream politics.

    ...

    Writing in the Daily Telegraph a few days after the attack, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson reduces Breivik’s assault, planned over a long period of time, to a question of personal egoism. Johnson writes: “It wasn’t about immigration, or Eurabia, or the hadith, or the Eurocrats’ plot against the people. It wasn’t really about ideology or religion. It was all about him…”
    For the conservative Swiss paper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Breivik is a social misfit addicted to violence. According to the NZZ, “There is a gulf separating populism and extremism," and any attempt to associate the mass murders in Norway with the rise of right-wing populism is “akin to modern superstition”. The NZZ’s argument is patently aimed at deflecting attention from Switzerland’s main anti-Islamist party, the ultra-right SVP (Swiss People’s Party), which was instrumental in introducing a ban on the construction of Islamic minarets.

    The disingenuous attempts by the political establishment to wash its hands of responsibility for what took place in Oslo were [summarized] by the British journalist Simon Jenkins. Writing in the Guardian early this week, Jenkins said: “The Norwegian tragedy is just that, a tragedy. It does not signify anything and should not be forced to do so. A man so insane he can see nothing wrong in shooting dead 68 young people in cold blood is so exceptional as to be of interest to criminology and brain science, but not to politics.

    Such disavowals of political links between the “bourgeois centre” to the atrocity in Oslo have been accompanied by interviews and reports explicitly denying that Breivik is a fascist. Writing in the Süddeutsche Zeitung a Swedish journalist denies that Breivik is a neo-Nazi, arguing that neo-Nazis are anti-Semitic, while the anti-Islamist movement to which Breivik belonged is pro-Israel.

    The espousal of anti-Islamism is not restricted to European political parties. It has been fueled by a number of intellectuals, journalists and ideologues both in Europe and America, who in the wake of the 9/11 bombings, have heeded the call by US President George W. Bush for a “crusade against Islamism.”

    .....

    In 2006 the American publicist Bruce Bawer published his book While Europe Slept, which claims to describe the cultural decline of Europe resulting from Muslim immigration. In his own blog, Bawer admits that he developed his racist views following his move to Europe (specifically Oslo) in the late 1990s.

    One year later the same theme was revisited by the US author Walter Laqueur, with his book The Last Days of Europe, and again by US journalist Christopher Caldwell in his book Reflections on the Revolution in Europe. In addition to writing for Rupert Murdoch’s Weekly Standard in America, Caldwell also writes regular articles for the world’s leading finance paper, the Financial Times.

    In Europe the ideological campaign against Islamism was spearheaded by the Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci, a former member of the Italian resistance to Mussolini, who wrote no less than three books deploring Muslim migration to Europe. In a 2005 interview with the Wall Street Journal, Fallaci declared that, due to the growing influence of Islamism, Europe should more accurately be defined as “Eurabia”.

    In Britain the theme of “Eurabia” was taken up in the same year by the right wing Spectator magazine in an edition with the cover headline “Eurabian Nightmare.”

    One of the main contributors to the torrent of anti-Muslim prejudice in the magazine was none other than the aforementioned Boris Johnson. In his contribution Johnson blustered that it was necessary to dispense with “the first taboo, and accept that the problem is Islam. Islam is the problem.” Johnson then went on to describe Islamism as the "most viciously sectarian of all religions”. This is from the same man who now claims that the anti-Islamist and fascist Breivik operated entirely on personal motives!

    In Germany the pernicious campaign against Islamism has been led by the ardent Zionist and former leftist Hendrik Broder, who is cited positively several times in Breivik’s manifesto. Broder pens his anti-Islamist diatribes for one of Germany’s main daily papers, Die Welt, and its most read weekly magazine, Der Spiegel.

    Last year Broder received significant support in his campaign from the Social Democratic Party member and former Berlin finance senator Thilo Sarrazin, who wrote his own bigoted tract defaming the country’s Arab and Turkish communities — Germany Abolishes Itself.

    We all know that Google engages in massive invasions of privacy on a daily basis through their tracking of every search along with their ability to track a single user to almost every site they visit.

    What do we have to show for it? Simply put: nothing.

    Anders Breivik, the confessed killer behind the Oslo and Utoya attacks, allegedly spent a whopping 200 hours on Google searching bomb related terms like the painfully obvious “how to make a bomb.” How does one of the world’s largest corporations and unarguably the most powerful search engine company on earth manage to miss this?
    .....

    Furthermore, Google Analytics coupled with the Google AdWords/AdSense advertising program makes for a tracking system that can follow an individual around most of the web.

    .....
    How would you feel knowing that every mouse movement you have made on many websites could be stored and saved for later use?

    ....
    Breivik’s name had appeared on a Norwegian watchlist after his purchase of chemicals from a Polish seller.

    Knowing this and how Google happily turns over data to the US government 94% of the time even though the American government files twice the demands of any other nation, why wouldn’t the Norwegian government just bang out a quick request to get more data on Breivik?

    http://libcom.org/blog/justice-different-right-left-25072011

    A notable thing about the start of this week, other than the Norway shooting, has been the sheer obviousness of double standards in the British justice system which just gone on show.

    District Judge Carolyn Mellanby told Lennon: “I am entirely satisfied you were at the front of this group of angry Luton supporters looking for trouble when you were confronted by the group of Newport supporters who were also angry and fired up looking for trouble.”

    Pretty nasty stuff. For this, he got a 12 month rehabilitation order, community work and a ban on going to the footie.

    And while on the comparisons, lets also compare it to the sentence handed down to Francis Fearne, jailed for 12 months for throwing two sticks at police.

    Pat Buchanan : Norwegian Right-Wing Terrorist ‘Breivik May Be Right’

    Offering his take on the horrendous terrorist attacks in Norway, Buchanan joined the Wall Street Journal and the Jerusalem Post in arguing that the far-right extremist perpetrator Anders Breivik may have had a valid point. Arguing that Breivik was bringing attention to his cause, “a Crusader’s war between the real Europe and the ‘cultural Marxists’ and Muslims,” Buchanan declares that, on the “climactic conflict between a once-Christian West and an Islamic world…Breivik may be right“:

    That threat comes from a burgeoning Muslim presence in a Europe that has never known mass immigration, its failure to assimilate, its growing alienation, and its sometime sympathy for Islamic militants and terrorists.

    Of course, Muslims are just the most recent group of people on Buchanan’s enemies list, which already includes Latinos, African-Americans, and gay people. As Buchanan said, he “prefers the old bigotry.” And he’s bringing it back to the mainstream.

  • UK group admits links with Norwegian killer | Firstpost
    http://www.firstpost.com/fwire/uk-group-admits-links-with-norwegian-killer-48562.html

    After initial denial, the far-right English Defence League (EDL) has admitted that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik had links to the group.

    Hobson said in an online posting: “He had about 150 EDL on his list… bar one or two doubt the rest of us ever met him, altho [sic] he did come over for one of our demo [sic] in 2010 … but what he did was wrong. RIP to all who died as a result of his actions

    Another senior member of the EDL, who spoke to the Daily Telegraph on condition of anonymity, said he understood Breivik had met EDL leaders when he came to Britain to hear Wilders speak in London last year. ”I spoke to him a few times on Facebook and he is extremely intelligent and articulate and very affable… He is someone who can project himself very well and I presume there would be those within the EDL who would be quite taken by that. It’s like Hitler, people said he was hypnotic. This guy had the same sort of effect,” he said.

  • In response to Norway attacks, right-wing bloggers suddenly demand nuance - The Plum Line - The Washington Post
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/in-response-to-norway-attacks-right-wing-bloggers-suddenly-demand-nuance/2011/03/04/gIQAndgfYI_blog.html

    As the news of terrorist attacks in Oslo broke on Friday, the conservative media were quick to place the blame on al Qaeda even though the details weren’t fully known. Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin wrote that the attacks were “a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists.”

    The most telling reaction was from the anti-Muslim bloggers Breivik cited by name in his manifesto.

    Pamela Geller, who along with Professional Islamophobe Robert Spencer has been active in opposing the construction of mosques in the U.S., wrote: “This is just a sinister attempt to tar all anti-jihadists with responsibility for this man’s heinous actions.” Spencer, for his part, wrote: “as if killing a lot of children aids the defense against the global jihad and Islamic supremacism, or has anything remotely to do with anything we have ever advocated.”

    conclusion

    These bloggers are not directly responsible for the actions of Anders Behring Breivik. But make no mistake: Their school of analysis, which puts the blame on all Muslims for acts of terrorism perpetrated by Islamic extremists, has been fully discredited — by their own reaction to the Oslo attacks. While it’s obvious that few if any of them will take this lesson to heart, the rest of us should — terrorist acts are committed by individuals, and it is those individuals who should be held responsible.
