Can the Israeli military be believed?

    A thread

Let’s start with Israel’s use of white phosphorus, which can cause horrific burns and injuries.

New videos, verified by @amnesty & @hrw, appear to show Israel using this weapon in civilian areas in #Gaza & #Lebanon:

The Israeli military denies using white phosphorus, but in the past Israel has lied about its use of this weapon.

In 2009, reports emerged that the Israeli military had used white phosphorus in #Gaza.

At first, Israel categorically denied these reports. But then @thetimes published the evidence – and Israel was forced to admit: “Yes, phosphorus was used.”

Now let’s look at Israeli air raids.

In 2019, Israel’s air force targeted the home of a family in #Gaza, killing eight #Palestinians.

Initially, Israel claimed that the building was a training facility of Palestinian militants.

aljazeera.com/news/2019/11/1Gaza: Eight family members killed, 12 critical in Israeli raids
Three adults and 5 children were killed in attacks while 12 other Palestinian family members in critical condition.
    https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/11/14/gaza-eight-family-members-killed-12-critical-in-israeli-raids

After the truth was revealed by the media, the Israeli military had to confess:

    haaretz.co.il/news/politics/…

Israel behaves in the same way whenever its soldiers assault, abuse, or kill Palestinians.

In 2016, an Israeli military medic killed a disarmed and injured Palestinian by shooting him in the head.

At first, the military decided not to press charges against the soldier.

Then, Israeli NGO @btselem published a video of the killing, which led to condemnations around the world.

Only at that point was the soldier taken to court. He was convicted and, after 9 months, was released from prison.
    btselem.org/video/20160324…
    https://www.btselem.org/video/20160324_soldier_executes_palestinian_attacker_in_hebron#full

Another Israeli soldier shot to death a 17-year-old Palestinian in 2014.

The soldier was prosecuted – and convicted – only after @CNN published a video of the killing.

He spent less than a year in prison:

Israeli police officer jailed for 9 months for killing Palestinian teen | CNN
    https://edition.cnn.com/2018/04/25/middleeast/israeli-police-officer-jailed-intl/index.html
In that case, both the military and the soldier claimed that he had used only rubber-coated bullets.

But the autopsy, which found three live bullets, refuted their claims.

Similarly, in 2018, Palestinians in the West Bank accused the Israeli military of firing tear gas into their school.

Initially, the military denied these allegations. But it was forced to admit after a video surfaced:

Last year, the Israeli military had to change its story about another incident: the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

At first, Israel denied responsibility – and blamed Palestinian militants.
    @AJEnglish @ShireenNasri

But then, the international media, the U.N., and the U.S. investigated the incident, and found that an Israeli soldier had killed Abu Akleh while she was wearing a blue press vest.

Israel had no choice but to admit. No soldier has been prosecuted:
    edition.cnn.com/2022/09/05/mid…

Israeli military admits Shireen Abu Akleh likely killed by Israeli fire, but won’t charge soldiers | CNN
    https://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/05/middleeast/idf-shireen-abu-akleh-investigation-intl/index.html

Although Israel’s armed forces killed 10,556 Palestinians between October 2001 and September 2023, soldiers who kill Palestinians are rarely prosecuted.

As we’ve seen, prosecutions usually occur when Israel is unable to deny what the soldiers did.

More than 99% of complaints regarding harm caused to Palestinians by soldiers end without a trial, according to Israeli NGO @YeshDin.

And the few soldiers who are prosecuted and convicted - tend to receive extremely lenient sentences:

Again and again, the Israeli military denies allegations, and is forced to confess only when left with no other choice.

And even when the Israeli military admits to accusations, it makes up excuses: “we acted lawfully,” "these are just a few rotten apples"…

So, the military tries to deny the facts. When this doesn’t work, it denies the meaning of these facts.

Following sociologist Stanley Cohen, the former denial tactic of the Israeli military can be called “factual” (or “literal”) denial.

The latter can be called “interpretive” denial.

Even a retired major general in Israel has warned of the Israeli military’s “culture of lying and deceit.”

He describes military investigations as filled with “lies, cover-ups, cutting corners, hiding information, and coordinating testimonies”:

Lastly, Israel hides unflattering documents, including previously public ones.

The aim (as revealed by @Akevot & @haaretzcom) is to protect Israel’s reputation, discredit critical scholars, and prevent Palestinian unrest:

  • Peut-on faire confiance aux enquêtes de l’armée de l’état sioniste ?

Thread by HediViterbo on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App

Israel is investigating its killing of 7 aid workers in #Gaza (who were from the UK, Australia, Poland, and Palestine, and included a U.S.-Canadian citizen).

But what do Israel’s past investigations of similar killings tell us?

    1/11

Take, for example, James Miller – an award-winning British filmmaker.

He was killed by Israeli gunfire while filming a documentary in #Gaza.

Forensic experts from the London police found that the bullets were the same ones used by the Israeli military.

    2/11

But the Israeli investigation into Miller’s death did not recommend that the suspected soldier be prosecuted.

Even when the British Attorney General asked Israel to prosecute the soldier, Israel ignored this request.

    3/11

Another example concerns U.S. activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed to death by an Israeli armored bulldozer in #Gaza.

Corrie was protesting Israel’s demolitions of #Palestinian houses.

Physicians and activists who were there say she was deliberately driven over.

    4/11

But the Israeli investigation found that Corrie’s death was an accident.

Unsurprisingly, when her parents filed a civil lawsuit against Israel, the Israeli court rejected their lawsuit.

The court described Corrie’s death as “an accident she brought upon herself”.

    5/11

    And another example:

British activist Tom Hurndall was helping Palestinian children in #Gaza cross a street to avoid gunfire. Then, an Israeli sniper shot him in the head.

Photographic evidence shows that Hurndall was wearing a bright orange vest.

    6/11

Initially, the Israeli inquiry concluded that Hurndall’s death was an accident.

But then, the UK demanded a more thorough investigation.

    7/11

This time, the investigation led to the prosecution and conviction of the soldier.

Why? One possible reason is that the convicted soldier was Arab, to whom Israel was perhaps less committed than to its Jewish citizens.

    8/11

Another possible reason is that the soldier said, during his trial, that the Israeli military had a policy of shooting at unarmed Palestinian civilians.

For Israel, it was easier to convict this soldier than to admit it had been systematically murdering unarmed civilians.

    9/11

Add to this the fact that the Israeli military has a long record of lying.

There are various examples in this thread: https://twitter.com/HediViterbo/status/1721468176892850589

So far, we’ve seen how Israel acts when the fatalities are British and US citizens.

Soldiers who kill #Palestinians are almost never prosecuted (see info in that same thread).

Today, the fascists governing Israel are now “rounding up” [cattle term] all Palestinian men in Gaza. Will the West Bank be next?

"The council called the emergency meeting to hear from Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who for the first time invoked Article 99...which enables a U.N. chief to raise threats he sees to international peace & security. He warned of an “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza & urged the council to demand a humanitarian cease-fire.

Guterres said he raised Article 99 [for the 1st time since 1971] because “there is a high risk of the total collapse of the humanitarian support system in Gaza.”

UN Secretary-General said Gaza is at “a breaking point,” & pointed to desperate risk of mass starvation; defense “can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”
    ...
"intense, widespread & ongoing Israeli attacks from air, land & sea...have hit 339 education facilities, 26 hospitals, 56 health care facilities, 88 mosques & 3 churches...“nowhere in Gaza is safe,” Guterres said

Israeli has destroyed or damaged 60% of Gaza’s housing & forced 85% of Gazans into homelessness.

"Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. ambassador, told the council that Israel’s objective is “the ethnic cleansing of the Gaza Strip” & “the dispossession & forcible displacement of the Palestinian people.”

Anyway the Biden Admin had the power to abstain from this vote instead of vetoing it.

It also did not have to rush more weapons to Netanyahu in the midst of the IDF rounding up Palestinians, stripping them to their underwear, & forcing them to kneel in the streets of Gaza.

Biden’s use of emergency powers to avoid Congressional review in order to send Israel more tank rounds “directly contradicts a promise Blinken made to Congress during his confirmation hearing": i.e., that after Trump used the same maneuver to supply Saudi massacres in Yemen, US would “come back to regular order” wrt human rights in arms deals

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The roads are so ravaged that the dead and wounded arrive by donkey cart. Desperate relatives rush bloodied and dust-covered people, many of them children, to the hospital. Naseem Hassan, a 48-year-old Palestinian medic in the Gaza Strip’s southern town of Khan Younis, said it had become impossible to walk through Nasser Hospital, with people spread out everywhere. Some patients, terrified or semiconscious, tugged at his sleeve when he squeezed through the halls. They groaned, slept and died on those bloodstained floors, he said. His skeletal staff at the 350-bed hospital has struggled to cope with an influx of over 1,000 patients. Without fresh bandages and gauze, Doctors Without Borders said, patients’ wounds have become seriously infected, in many cases septic.

That 7 yo is going to starve to death if we let the Israeli government do whatever it wants. We need a #Ceasefire.

“There is hunger, there is nothing: There is no flour, no water,” said Etimad Hassan, who sleeps pressed together with 21 family members in a small tent in Deir al-Balah. Her voice trembled with rage. “We are not animals.”

"Without cooking gas, Palestinians chop down whatever trees they find for firewood.

"Adding to the misery, there is little to no treatment available for the 14% of Gaza’s population suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure & other chronic heart conditions, said the [WHO].

“Asthmatics do not find inhalers. Diabetics do not find insulin,” said Ebraheem Matar, a doctor at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. “Hypertensive patients do not find receptor blockers.”

“Hassan said her husband abruptly stopped taking his blood pressure medication when he ran out, a withdrawal doctors warned would increase his risk of heart attack. “I’m worried it will kill him,” she said.

Junaid said he spends his days begging for food in the streets & scouring pharmacies & health clinics for any anti-inflammatory medication to blunt his throbbing headaches. He checked five pharmacies Thursday & returned home empty-handed.”

“Tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, many of whom already fled fighting two or three times, have set off for the southern city of Rafah on the Egyptian border. Two children have been shot and killed by Israeli forces in Jenin, occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.

A nine-year-old was shot in the head and a 15-year-old was shot in the chest.

Security and local sources told the Palestinian news agency Wafa that the Israeli army forced residents of the ad-Damj neighbourhood to leave their homes at gunpoint and destroyed streets in the neighbourhood.

Wafa said that the army also bombed a house using a drone.

@mekomit expose shows that the directive to deport 2.4 million #Palestinians out of occupied #Gaza and onto #Egypt and beyond has been officially endorsed by #Israel's Ministry of Intelligence on 13 October. A war crime in the making!

#Israel's Ministry of Intelligence deportation directive outlines the four stages:
    1. A call on #Palestinian civilians to vacate north #Gaza and allow for land operations;
    2. Sequential land operations from north to south Gaza;
    3. Leaving routes open across Rafah;
    4. Establishing “tent cities” in northern Sinai and the construction of cities to resettle Palestinians in #Egypt.

I have not been able to detect, as of yet, an agenda item or government decision endorsing the directive of the Ministry. If it was indeed presented and approved it would not likely to be in the public domain.

  • Imperialist Domination Produces War, Death, and Destruction
    https://the-spark.net

Another barbaric war broke out in the #Middle_East, this time engulfing #Israel and #Gaza. The U.S. government and news media blame the Palestinian group, Hamas, for setting off this war.

Yes, #Hamas fighters carried out a murderous rampage, killing over a thousand Israelis and wounding thousands more. This is blind violence, and it has to be condemned. But the U.S. is in no position to condemn this violence. Its hands are not clean.

The Israeli military’s response to this rampage explains how we got here. For the Israeli military launched a war against the entire Gaza population of more than two million people, half of whom are children. The Israeli government cut off all water, electricity, gas, food, and medical supplies to the #Gaza_Strip, condemning countless people to sickness, starvation, and death. Warplanes have been dropping thousands of bombs every day on Gaza, killing thousands and turning entire neighborhoods into rubble. And while the Israeli army masses a heavily equipped army of 300,000 troops along the border, it has ordered all Palestinians living in the north of Gaza to move to the south, provoking a mass panic, exodus and certainly more death.

Gaza is a tiny territory, half the size of Chicago. It is one of the most densely populated areas of land on Earth. Most people are refugees, who fled other wars and conflicts. They are extremely poor. And they are already trapped, completely surrounded by troops, guards, fences, walls, and war ships. Gaza is an open-air prison that has been periodically bombed and invaded in war after war.

The Israeli military now proposes to invade—this means urban warfare, soldiers fighting street to street, house to house, and much more death and destruction. And what will that produce? Ethnic cleansing? This will bring more wars, endless wars. What it will not bring is more protection or security for the various peoples—obviously not the Palestinians, but certainly not the Israelis either.

Israel, the U.S., and the rest of the big powers denounce Hamas for terrorism. But what these big powers carry out against the Palestinian population is unspeakable terror and violence from one of the biggest, most advanced, and heavily equipped militaries in the world.

Biden, the U.S. government, and the U.S. military say their support of Israel is the support of the Jewish people. That is a lie. The U.S. supports the state of Israel for one reason: the Israeli state is U.S. imperialism’s cop in the Middle East, a region rich in oil resources, which means tremendous profits and wealth for U.S. oil companies, financiers, military contractors, the capitalist class as a whole.

In order to safeguard those profits and wealth, the U.S. and the other big powers have divided the different peoples and ethnic groups of the region against each other. Divide and rule is how the U.S. and the other imperialist powers have always imposed their domination. Those divisions have produced nationalist and religious fundamentalism, and many, many wars: Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and all the wars between Israel and the #Palestinians. For the #Israeli_population, that means being on the front line, kill or be killed, over and over again.

All the peoples of the Middle East could live together in peace, despite all their differences, ethnic or religious. That can only be brought about when the working class and poor of all the different countries in the Middle East rise up and overthrow their own rotten rulers, religious fanatics and parasites who oppress and divide them. This will allow them to get rid of the system that is causing the worsening cycle of wars and ethnic conflicts: capitalism and imperialism. And in so doing they will help the mighty working classes in the big imperialist countries to do the same.

Peace is possible only when the working class takes power from that tiny capitalist minority that runs society today, in order to run society in the interests of the majority.

    🧵how the nytimes writes/evaluates #Palestinian & Israeli life differently:

1/"The Palestinian death toll for 2 days of fighting had risen to 15 by Saturday afternoon with 125 injured, according to the Health Ministry in #Gaza. A 5-year-old girl was among those killed on Friday"

2/ “Two Israeli soldiers were wounded on Saturday by a mortar shell that fell on an Israeli communal farm near the Gaza border, according to the military”

These sentences are back to back. Palestinian casualties are results of “fighting”, as if they were caught in crossfire

When it comes to Israeli soldiers, there is a weapon (mortar shell) and a place (a farm). There are apparently no soldiers or civilians in the “Palestinian death toll,” nor a location of death. Earlier in the article we are told that “One civilian was lightly injured” in Sderot

      https://euromedmonitor.org/fr/article/4476/Cisjordanie-:-Euro-Med-Monitor-exige-une-enqu%C3%AAte-urgente-et-ind

    June 23, 2020 9:32 PM – IMEMC News
    https://imemc.org/article/hours-before-his-sisters-wedding-israeli-soldiers-kill-a-young-palestinian-ma

Israeli soldiers shot and killed, Tuesday, a young Palestinian man near the “Container” military roadblock, northeast of Bethlehem, east of occupied Jerusalem in the West Bank.

The head of Abu Dis Town Council, Ahmad Abu Hilal, said the soldiers shot the young man, identified as Ahmad Mustafa Erekat , 27, from Abu Dis, and left him to bleed to death, before taking his corpse away. Erekat suffered several gunshot wounds.

Abu Hilal added that Ahmad was driving to Bethlehem city to fetch his sisters, and his mother, from a hairdressing shop in Bethlehem, as the family was preparing for the wedding of one of his sisters, which was supposed to take place on the same day, Tuesday, June 23 2019.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers at the permanent military roadblock closed the area, and prevented Red Crescent medics from approaching the young man, in addition to firing many gas bombs at Palestinian cars and residents to force them away.

The Israeli army alleged that the young man “accelerated towards the roadblock, and attempted to ram a female soldier with his car,” and added that the soldier reportedly suffered mild wounds before she was moved to a hospital in Jerusalem.

The spokesperson of the Israel police, Micky Rosenfeld, claimed that “after trying to ram the soldiers, the young man got out of his vehicle, and approached them before who shot him.”

The family denied the military allegations and said the soldiers rushed to deliver the fatal shots without proper justification and added that they believe their slain son must have lost control over his car.

“As we have seen in previous similar incidents, the soldiers were quick to open deadly fire,”, his family said, “Our son would never have tried to deliberately ram soldiers, or anybody else, especially on the eve of his sister’s wedding!”

They added that they intend to hire a lawyer to demand Israel to release his corpse for burial.

    • Erekat: “Netanyahu Is Responsible For Ahmad Erekat’s Execution”

The Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the head of its Negotiations Affairs Department, Dr. Saeb Erekat, strongly denounced the Israel army’s killing of his relative Ahmad Erekat, and held Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responsible for the crime.

Erekat stated that Netanyahu’s policies against the Palestinian civilians are what encourages Israeli soldiers to continue to commit these crimes.

He added that the Israeli occupation did not only execute Ahmad Erekat in a cold-blooded crime but also tried to coverup by fabricating the truth and coming up with lies and justifications for this crime by claiming the young man “attempted to ram the soldiers with his car.”

His statements came from the mourning home of the slain young man, who was supposed to get married within a few days.

“We, just like any Palestinian family, suffer from this racist occupation, Ahmad was killed in a cold-blooded crime! He was my cousin, and we were supposed to celebrate his wedding withing a few days,” Erekat added, “We were also supposed to be celebrating his sister’s wedding today, but the soldiers killed him and tried to justify their crime.”

On his official Twitter account, Dr. Erekat said the army has many cameras at the roadblock, yet failed to release the video and show what really happened.

“This is the invitation of Eman’s wedding , Ahmed’s sister 23rd of June 2020 from 7-10 pm. Ahmed Erakat (26) was murdered in cold blood at the wadi al-Nar (The Container) roadblock, by Israeli occupying . They continue their lies and claim he tried to run over the soldiers. “O mother of the martyr, I wish it was my mother in your place!”

That was the song of the young people processing through the streets of Abu Dis until they reached the house of the martyr. My little cousin, the handsome 26 year-old, the fiancé, the brother and son, Ahmed Mustafa Erekat.

He was executed by the Israelis after he lost control of his car and crashed into a checkpoint. They left him bleeding for more than an hour. The occupation army prevented an ambulance from getting to him, it prevented civilians from approaching to comfort him, it prevented witnesses who could record the details of the crime.

When my uncle arrived at the checkpoint barrier, he could see his son Ahmed writhing on the ground. He called out to the soldiers, he begged them, he cried out to them for help, but they offered no mercy. They stood by as Ahmed’s lifeblood left him.

And killing him wasn’t enough: Israel’s criminal authorities weren’t satisfied, so they detained Ahmed’s dead body.

We as Palestinians are used to Israel’s attempts to blame the victim, to swing the blame for each field execution back on us. In Ahmed’s case, we saw the same inhuman injustice, the same effort to humiliate us, with the invention of a narrative to implicate Ahmed, to make him responsible for his own murder.

Ahmed was a regular guy. He enjoyed keeping fit. He had his own business printing graphic designs on T shirts.

And he was a young man in love. He was due to get married at the end of May, but the wedding was delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic. His fiancée has spoken about the new house they were getting ready, and the wedding preparations, the dress, the festive jewellery, the furniture that they’d purchased.

Ahmed didn’t attack anyone. This is the true story of his life. Don’t let the occupation rewrite his story.

Today, the day after, was the wedding day of Iman, Ahmed’s little sister. Every scene is imprinted in my mind, all the pain.

I stood there next to his traumatized sisters. My eyes scanned the details of the house, decorated with such expectations, joy and care: from the lace adorning the banisters, the chairs that filled the house in preparation for the guests, the beautifully laid out chocolate, wedding favors and coffee: everything was ready for Iman’s pre-wedding reception.

Ahmed is not the first member that the Erekat family has lost to Israel’s occupation, and I fear he won’t be the last martyr from among the Palestinian people.

I hope those who genuinely want to console the family will help share the truth, and expose the occupation. Raise your voices to call for Israel to release the full footage from the ten security cameras that recorded Ahmed’s last hour on earth.

In Occupied Palestine, there is no right to life, no right to joy, no right even to say farewell. Young Palestinian men are just numbers, not individuals, and Ahmed’s body has now joined that cold audit.

Our fight is to stop the killing of our people. When we cry for help, will anyone listen? Do Palestinian lives really matter?

Palestinian Scholar Noura Erakat: Israeli Forces Killed My Cousin on His Sister’s Wedding Day

Israeli soldiers on Tuesday killed 27-year-old Ahmed Erekat at a checkpoint in the occupied West Bank as he was on his way to pick up his sister, who was set to be married that night. Ahmed Erekat is the nephew of senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and cousin of Palestinian American legal scholar Noura Erakat, who says Israeli claims that Ahmed was attempting a car-ramming attack on soldiers are completely unfounded. “What we understand is that Ahmed lost control of his car or was confused while he was in his car. That was all it took to have a knee-jerk reaction … and immediately to cause the soldiers to open fire on him multiple times,” she says.

  • Defying US, UNGA renews mandate for agency helping Palestinian refugees

The United Nations General Assembly has, by an overwhelmingly vote, extended the mandate for a UN agency supporting Palestinian refugees for another three years amid a cash shortfall triggered by a halt in US funding.

The 193-member Assembly renewed the mandate mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) with 169 votes in favour and nine abstentions. The United States and Israel voted against.

UNRWA, which as established in 1949, provides education, health and relief services as well as housing and microfinance assistance to more than 5 million registered refugees in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

The agency has faced budgetary difficulties since last year, when the United States – its biggest donor – halted its aid of $360 million per year. The United States and Israel have both accused UNRWA of mismanagement and anti-Israeli incitement.

In a statement published by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas praised the vote as a victory for international law and the rights of the Palestinian refugees.

Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip, hailed the U.N. vote as a defeat for the United States and a failure of its attempts to pressure U.N. member-states against UNRWA.

“We welcome the decision to renew the international mandate to UNRWA and we see it as another failure to hostile U.S. policies to the Palestinian rights,” Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters.
Last month UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl resigned amid an investigation into misconduct allegations. Krahenbuhl has denied wrongdoing and said his agency was the victim of a political campaign designed to undermine it.

Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium suspended payments to UNRWA over the inquiry, deepening the budget crisis set off last year by the United States. UNRWA hopes the management shake-up will help pacify donors, said a source with knowledge of the organization’s thinking.

The United States has advocated shifting the agency’s relief services to refugee host countries. But UNRWA counters it provides a humanitarian lifeline and that it safeguards and advances Palestinians’ rights under international law.

Hanan Ashrawi, a senior Palestine Liberation Organization official, praised the U.N. vote on Friday and said it was the United Nations’ responsibility to combat what she called U.S. and Israeli attacks on Palestinian refugees.

“All attempts at trying to limit UNRWA’s mandate or defund it or attack it have failed, and we hope that the international community will continue to come to the rescue,” she said.

Israeli soldiers killed, Saturday, one Palestinian and injured at least 30 others, after a group of illegal colonialist settlers attempted to invade the northern part of the al-Mughayyir village, east of the central West Bank city of Ramallah, and were intercepted by the villagers.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said the Palestinian, identified as Hamdi Taleb Sa’ada Na’san , 38, was shot with a live round in his back, and the bullet was logged in the upper abdomen.

The Palestinian was rushed to Palestine Medical Complex, in Ramallah, but died from his very serious wounds.

The soldiers also injured at least thirty other Palestinians, among them six who were shot with live fire, including one who suffered a very serious injury.

One of the wounded Palestinians was shot with a live round in his mouth, before he was rushed to the Istishari hospital, in Ramallah, in a moderate-but-stable condition.

A Palestinian Civilian Killed by Israeli Settlers

At approximately 15:30 on Saturday, 26 January 2019, a group of Israeli settlers moved into al-Moghayer village, northeast of Ramallah, and rioted on the streets while opening fire at several houses; 2 of them belonged to Jamal ‘Ali al-Na’asan and ‘Abdullah al-Na’asan, breaking all the houses’ windows.
Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinian young men gathered to throw stones, empty bottles and Molotov Cocktails at them. In response, the settlers immediately and randomly fired a barrage of bullets, wounding Hamdi Taleb al-Na’asan (38) with a bullet that entered his lower back, hit the lungs and then exited from the chest. As a result, Hamdi fell on the ground and was immediately taken via an ambulance belonging to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) to Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, where his death was declared in the ED due to arriving in a very critical condition.

Following that, the Israeli forces moved into the village to provide protection for settlers and opened fire at the Palestinian protestors. As a result, 22 civilians were wounded with bullets and shrapnel; 8 of them were taken to the Palestine Medical Complex, 6 were taken to the Istishari Arab Hospital in al-Rihan Suburb, north of Ramallah, and 8 were taken to the medical center in nearby Termes’aya village. It should be mentioned that Hamdi al-Na’asan was a former prisoner in the Israeli jails, where he served an 8-year sentence. He was also married with 4 children; the youngest is only 1 year old.

A lethal weekend for Palestinians — four killed, from Rafah in the Gaza Strip to Ramallah in the West Bank — ended Saturday with the death of a farmer in his olive orchard, in the central West Bank village of Al-Mughayyir.

It was the afternoon. Hamdi Na’asan and a few fellow villagers were about to finish tilling their fine olive orchard, downhill from the virulent outpost of Adei Ad. It is plowing season and the farmers were turning over the earth on their beautifully terraced orchard. At around 4 P.M., a group of armed settlers approached from the direction of Adei Ad and began attacking them in an effort to chase them off their land.

That is the routine here in the land of the outposts, especially in Al-Mughayyir. I was in the village last week, and I saw the still and bleeding remains of 25 olive trees planted 35 years ago, cut down by electric saws, tree after tree, on Friday January 11, three days before the Jewish holiday of Tu Bishvat, sometimes called Jewish Arbor Day.

Footprints led to the Mevo Shiloh outpost, whose residents took over a half-abandoned army barracks on the hill above Al-Mughayyir’s fields. For the past two months, villagers had gathered every Friday at their land to demand the removal of Mevo Shiloh. Its settlers graze their flocks on the village’s land and have carried out so-called price tag attacks in the village, vandalizing cars.

On Saturday they came from Adei Ad. A few days before, villagers said they had somehow learned to live with Adei Ad, and their problem was with Mevo Shilo. This weekend it became clear to them that it was a choice between plague and cholera. One week the evil came from the east, from Mevo Shilo, a week later from the north, Adei Ad — a rotation of hate crimes coming from the outposts. You should have seen the fear of the residents as we drove to their orchards last week as we approached Mevo Shilo, to see the atmosphere of threats and terror with which they live.

After the settlers came down and attacked them, the farmers phoned for help. They were utterly helpless: The army will always side with the settlers, of course. The residents also called the Palestinian liaison bureau but didn’t get any help. Military forces arrived, and soldiers and settlers began shooting live ammunition toward the farmers.

Villagers deny claims that the settlers were attacked by farmers. Anyone familiar with the Shiloh Valley knows how difficult, impossible really, it is to believe such claims. The settlers descend upon fields that aren’t theirs for the sole purpose of evicting residents from their land and striking fear. That’s the aim, that’s the goal.

The farmers and villagers who rushed to help them fled south, toward the village, as soldiers and settlers fired first tear gas, that enveloped the homes, and then live ammunition. They shot at them as they fled. Na’asan was shot in the back. The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday night that he was shot by a settler. It took an hour to bring him to the government hospital in Ramallah. An additional 15 villagers were wounded. Nine were admitted to the Ramallah hospital; three needed surgery.

The view from Al-Mughayyir is gorgeous this time of year, a fertile valley, cultivated amazingly. Brown earth sprouting blossoming olive orchards and green fields. And here are the photographs of Na’asan’s death: His dead face and closed eyes, the small hole in his back, near his spine. He was 38, a father of four, a relative of Abed al Hai Na’asan, the owner of the orchard whose trees were cut down, with whom we went last week to witness the damage and his pain.

Thus fell the village’s first victim since the start of its popular protest, and he will probably not be the last.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, condemned in a tweet the Israeli settlers’ killing of a Palestinian father during an attack on al-Mughayyir village, on Saturday.

Mladenov posted in a tweet, “Today’s violence in al-Mughayyir is shocking and unacceptable!”

He added, “Israel must put an end to settler violence & bring those responsible to justice.”

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the #Palestinian man killed and those injured… All must condemn violence, stand up to terror,” he stressed.

  • The Angry Arab News Service/وكالة أنباء العربي الغاضب: Israel occupation army spokesperson admits war crimes
    http://angryarab.blogspot.com/2018/03/israel-occupation-army-spokesperson.html

    From Eyal:
"The IDF spokesperson tweeted the following earlier today:
“Yesterday we saw 30,000 people; we arrived prepared and with precise reinforcements. Nothing was carried out uncontrolled; everything was accurate and measured, and we know where every bullet landed”.
Well, they landed their bullets in or through 17 people’s bodies, plus an unknown number among the ~2,400 wounded. We also recall they accurately-and-measuredly shout a youngster fleeing from them in the back. A while later, someone at the IDF probably realized they were admitting
war crimes, and the tweet was removed.
