Fewer & fewer #Palestinians who are attacked by Israeli civilians in the #WestBank complain to Israeli authorities.

    Why ?

    (1) 97% of Israeli investigations end without even a partial conviction.

    (2) Filing a complaint risks Israeli retribution.

Karim Makdisi sur X : “On #Lebanon All analyses that take as their starting point, #Israeli security—and therefore hizb as the core “problem” to be “solved”—are lacking and unproductive. There is also no notion that since 2006 the USA (via its proxy the UK) wants a Lebanese army that is an internal anti “terrorist” (ie anti hizb, Palestinian groups…) and not one that can actually defend #Lebanon from its main external threat: genocidal Israel. For US-UK the army is there to patrol borders on behalf of Israel/US interests. This is why the west has blocked any meaningful weapons supply to the army, and the focus instead is on supplying surplus clothes and vehicles and “training” officers in the west to build a new officer core/leadership disconnected from hizb.
That, once again, is also why the US pushes the head of Lebanon’s army to be president.

Meanwhile Qatar and other allies literally feed the Lebanese soldiers who are poorly trained and unable to defend Lebanon today.

It’s also why Israelis insist on UK and US to monitor any ceasefire, be it 1701, 1701+, or other mechanism. France, for all its problems and colonial position, can’t be “trusted” because, unlike the US and UK, it can’t be fully trusted to have unblinking support for Israel. since France still has its colonial ties to Lebanon’s Maronite Christians.

Finally, once and for all, #1701 is not a one-sided agreement. It requires Israel to withdraw from all Lebanese territory and stop all air, sea and land violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Read the
    @UNIFIL_
reports since 2006 to see the tens of thousands of such violations. This point is often left out of most analyses as though it’s an incidental point or an assumption that if Hizb were to disappear then expansionist Israel would have no reason to enter Lebanon anymore. This thinking is delusional at best. Look around Israeli neighbors: Sinai, Golan, West Bank, and Gaza. Do they enjoy full “sovereignty”? Jordan still does at a formal level for the role it has in protecting Israel border and for its possibility in Zionist imagination to be the area where #Palestinians in West Bank would be ethnically cleansed to.

The internal Lebanese situation is a different matter. The state corruption and bankruptcy is on all Lebanese sides and leaders. Reforms are urgently needed, and a proper defense plan as well.

How do we ensure “sovereignty” that does not require surrender to Israeli demands (via USA-UK) while also building national institutions that serve all Lebanese in an equitable manner, that prioritize national public healthcare, education and infrastructure rather than serve the kleptocracy and local monopolies/ external commercial interests? How do we build a proper army to defend Lebanon from Israeli threats and reassure Lebanese citizens who have for decades suffered from Israeli violence and occupation, while also ensuring state monopoly on weapons? How do we reach a point where Lebanon’s foreign policy is based on its actual interest? How do we control the banking and financial sectors to avoid the theft of people’s money with no consequences? What should the policy towards Syrian refugees that both respects the dignity of all refugees while also not being captive to European migration obsessions? How do we ensure the dignified return of over a million Lebanese displaced from the current Israeli onslaught and the reconstruction of their homes and communities? How do we keep religious influence out of the state/citizen relationship? What kind of Lebanon do we want?

On @Haaretz front page this morning, an expose by the brilliant @hagar_shezaf on the role of #Israel's territorial defense units in protecting settlement outposts. Military personnel operate under the direction and control of violent settlers and partake in assaults leading to the forcible transfer of #Palestinians across the occupied West Bank.

Art. 4 of the International Law Commission #ILC ARSIWA established that the conduct of any State organ shall be considered an act of that State under international law, whether the organ exercises legislative, executive, judicial or any other functions. #Israel, its central and local government and its armed forces - including territorial defense units - are responsible for settler violence and subsequent forcible transfer of Palestinians, in grave breach of international humanitarian law.

The state of Israel, and its central and local government, should be held accountable for settler violence and subjected to lawful countermeasures for their Internationally wrongful acts.

Let’s start with Israel’s use of white phosphorus, which can cause horrific burns and injuries.

New videos, verified by @amnesty & @hrw, appear to show Israel using this weapon in civilian areas in #Gaza & #Lebanon:

In 2009, reports emerged that the Israeli military had used white phosphorus in #Gaza.

At first, Israel categorically denied these reports. But then @thetimes published the evidence – and Israel was forced to admit: “Yes, phosphorus was used.”

Now let’s look at Israeli air raids.

In 2019, Israel’s air force targeted the home of a family in #Gaza, killing eight #Palestinians.

Initially, Israel claimed that the building was a training facility of Palestinian militants.

aljazeera.com/news/2019/11/1Gaza: Eight family members killed, 12 critical in Israeli raids

After the truth was revealed by the media, the Israeli military had to confess:

Israel behaves in the same way whenever its soldiers assault, abuse, or kill Palestinians.

In 2016, an Israeli military medic killed a disarmed and injured Palestinian by shooting him in the head.

At first, the military decided not to press charges against the soldier.

Then, Israeli NGO @btselem published a video of the killing, which led to condemnations around the world.

Only at that point was the soldier taken to court. He was convicted and, after 9 months, was released from prison.

Another Israeli soldier shot to death a 17-year-old Palestinian in 2014.

The soldier was prosecuted – and convicted – only after @CNN published a video of the killing.

He spent less than a year in prison:

In that case, both the military and the soldier claimed that he had used only rubber-coated bullets.

But the autopsy, which found three live bullets, refuted their claims.

Similarly, in 2018, Palestinians in the West Bank accused the Israeli military of firing tear gas into their school.

Initially, the military denied these allegations. But it was forced to admit after a video surfaced:

Last year, the Israeli military had to change its story about another incident: the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.

At first, Israel denied responsibility – and blamed Palestinian militants.
    @AJEnglish @ShireenNasri

But then, the international media, the U.N., and the U.S. investigated the incident, and found that an Israeli soldier had killed Abu Akleh while she was wearing a blue press vest.

Israel had no choice but to admit. No soldier has been prosecuted:

Although Israel’s armed forces killed 10,556 Palestinians between October 2001 and September 2023, soldiers who kill Palestinians are rarely prosecuted.

As we’ve seen, prosecutions usually occur when Israel is unable to deny what the soldiers did.

Again and again, the Israeli military denies allegations, and is forced to confess only when left with no other choice.

And even when the Israeli military admits to accusations, it makes up excuses: “we acted lawfully,” "these are just a few rotten apples"…

So, the military tries to deny the facts. When this doesn’t work, it denies the meaning of these facts.

Following sociologist Stanley Cohen, the former denial tactic of the Israeli military can be called “factual” (or “literal”) denial.

The latter can be called “interpretive” denial.

Even a retired major general in Israel has warned of the Israeli military’s “culture of lying and deceit.”

He describes military investigations as filled with “lies, cover-ups, cutting corners, hiding information, and coordinating testimonies”:

Lastly, Israel hides unflattering documents, including previously public ones.

Peut-on faire confiance aux enquêtes de l’armée de l’état sioniste ?

Israel is investigating its killing of 7 aid workers in #Gaza (who were from the UK, Australia, Poland, and Palestine, and included a U.S.-Canadian citizen).

But what do Israel’s past investigations of similar killings tell us?

    1/11

Take, for example, James Miller – an award-winning British filmmaker.

He was killed by Israeli gunfire while filming a documentary in #Gaza.

Forensic experts from the London police found that the bullets were the same ones used by the Israeli military.

    2/11

But the Israeli investigation into Miller’s death did not recommend that the suspected soldier be prosecuted.

Even when the British Attorney General asked Israel to prosecute the soldier, Israel ignored this request.

    3/11

Another example concerns U.S. activist Rachel Corrie, who was crushed to death by an Israeli armored bulldozer in #Gaza.

Corrie was protesting Israel’s demolitions of #Palestinian houses.

Physicians and activists who were there say she was deliberately driven over.

    4/11

But the Israeli investigation found that Corrie’s death was an accident.

Unsurprisingly, when her parents filed a civil lawsuit against Israel, the Israeli court rejected their lawsuit.

The court described Corrie’s death as “an accident she brought upon herself”.

    5/11

    And another example:

British activist Tom Hurndall was helping Palestinian children in #Gaza cross a street to avoid gunfire. Then, an Israeli sniper shot him in the head.

Photographic evidence shows that Hurndall was wearing a bright orange vest.

    6/11

Initially, the Israeli inquiry concluded that Hurndall’s death was an accident.

But then, the UK demanded a more thorough investigation.

    7/11

This time, the investigation led to the prosecution and conviction of the soldier.

Why? One possible reason is that the convicted soldier was Arab, to whom Israel was perhaps less committed than to its Jewish citizens.

    8/11

Another possible reason is that the soldier said, during his trial, that the Israeli military had a policy of shooting at unarmed Palestinian civilians.

For Israel, it was easier to convict this soldier than to admit it had been systematically murdering unarmed civilians.

    9/11

Add to this the fact that the Israeli military has a long record of lying.

There are various examples in this thread: ▻https://twitter.com/HediViterbo/status/1721468176892850589

So far, we’ve seen how Israel acts when the fatalities are British and US citizens.

Soldiers who kill #Palestinians are almost never prosecuted (see info in that same thread).

@mekomit expose shows that the directive to deport 2.4 million #Palestinians out of occupied #Gaza and onto #Egypt and beyond has been officially endorsed by #Israel's Ministry of Intelligence on 13 October. A war crime in the making!

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F9md-CQXUAAE0Wz.jpg:large

#Israel's Ministry of Intelligence deportation directive outlines the four stages:
    1. A call on #Palestinian civilians to vacate north #Gaza and allow for land operations;
    2. Sequential land operations from north to south Gaza;
    3. Leaving routes open across Rafah;
    4. Establishing “tent cities” in northern Sinai and the construction of cities to resettle Palestinians in #Egypt.

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/F9mfsFdWIAAup2F.jpg:large

I have not been able to detect, as of yet, an agenda item or government decision endorsing the directive of the Ministry. If it was indeed presented and approved it would not likely to be in the public domain.

Imperialist Domination Produces War, Death, and Destruction
    ►https://the-spark.net

Another barbaric war broke out in the #Middle_East, this time engulfing #Israel and #Gaza. The U.S. government and news media blame the Palestinian group, Hamas, for setting off this war.

Yes, #Hamas fighters carried out a murderous rampage, killing over a thousand Israelis and wounding thousands more. This is blind violence, and it has to be condemned. But the U.S. is in no position to condemn this violence. Its hands are not clean.

The Israeli military’s response to this rampage explains how we got here. For the Israeli military launched a war against the entire Gaza population of more than two million people, half of whom are children. The Israeli government cut off all water, electricity, gas, food, and medical supplies to the #Gaza_Strip, condemning countless people to sickness, starvation, and death. Warplanes have been dropping thousands of bombs every day on Gaza, killing thousands and turning entire neighborhoods into rubble. And while the Israeli army masses a heavily equipped army of 300,000 troops along the border, it has ordered all Palestinians living in the north of Gaza to move to the south, provoking a mass panic, exodus and certainly more death.

Gaza is a tiny territory, half the size of Chicago. It is one of the most densely populated areas of land on Earth. Most people are refugees, who fled other wars and conflicts. They are extremely poor. And they are already trapped, completely surrounded by troops, guards, fences, walls, and war ships. Gaza is an open-air prison that has been periodically bombed and invaded in war after war.

The Israeli military now proposes to invade—this means urban warfare, soldiers fighting street to street, house to house, and much more death and destruction. And what will that produce? Ethnic cleansing? This will bring more wars, endless wars. What it will not bring is more protection or security for the various peoples—obviously not the Palestinians, but certainly not the Israelis either.

Israel, the U.S., and the rest of the big powers denounce Hamas for terrorism. But what these big powers carry out against the Palestinian population is unspeakable terror and violence from one of the biggest, most advanced, and heavily equipped militaries in the world.

Biden, the U.S. government, and the U.S. military say their support of Israel is the support of the Jewish people. That is a lie. The U.S. supports the state of Israel for one reason: the Israeli state is U.S. imperialism’s cop in the Middle East, a region rich in oil resources, which means tremendous profits and wealth for U.S. oil companies, financiers, military contractors, the capitalist class as a whole.

In order to safeguard those profits and wealth, the U.S. and the other big powers have divided the different peoples and ethnic groups of the region against each other. Divide and rule is how the U.S. and the other imperialist powers have always imposed their domination. Those divisions have produced nationalist and religious fundamentalism, and many, many wars: Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and all the wars between Israel and the #Palestinians. For the #Israeli_population, that means being on the front line, kill or be killed, over and over again.

All the peoples of the Middle East could live together in peace, despite all their differences, ethnic or religious. That can only be brought about when the working class and poor of all the different countries in the Middle East rise up and overthrow their own rotten rulers, religious fanatics and parasites who oppress and divide them. This will allow them to get rid of the system that is causing the worsening cycle of wars and ethnic conflicts: capitalism and imperialism. And in so doing they will help the mighty working classes in the big imperialist countries to do the same.

Peace is possible only when the working class takes power from that tiny capitalist minority that runs society today, in order to run society in the interests of the majority.

Palestinian activist Nizar Banat died after Palestinian Authority security forces arrested him early this morning. He was transferred to Hebron Hospital & pronounced dead

PA arrested Nizar many times for his outspokenness against their corruption. This is their version of events

“Through repeated targeting of Banat, the PA is seeking to make an example of him that whoever criticizes/opposes its policies will be silenced. This comes as part of intimidation policy PA adopts against activists+opponents in the West Bank.”

Even the European Union’s representative in West Bank and Gaza made a statement calling on PA to “respect freedom of expression and the protection of human rights activists” after Nizar’s house was attacked by PA thugs/forces who fired stun grenades in May

The office of the European Union (EU) Representative in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip on Sunday expressed concern over the attack that targeted the residence of an activist in the West Bank, calling on the Palestinian Authority (PA) to “respect freedom of expression.”

The office announced on Twitter that it: “Is following with concern the attack on activist Nizar Banat’s house last night,” in the town of Dura, south of the West Bank.

“Violence against politicians and human rights defenders is unacceptable,” the EU office added.

The mission called on the PA to ensure: “Respect for freedom of expression and the protection of human rights activists.”

Last night, Banat revealed in a Facebook video that: “A group of vandals accompanied by the security services fired massively, broke the doors of the house, and fired stun grenades.” (...)

    Family statement:

“What happened with Nizar is a premeditated assassination. PA security forces stormed his residence at 3:30am, and 25 forces severely beat him up. He was arrested naked and taken to an unknown destination before his death was announced.”

Nizar Banat’s family are saying the Palestinian Authority is hiding his body. The family’s lawyer has demanded an autopsy to find out how exactly he died. Family said Nizar was beaten on the head with metal pieces and sticks.

Cisjordanie : Euro-Med Monitor exige une enquête urgente et indépendante sur le meurtre de l’activiste Nizar Banat après son arrestation par la sécurité palestinienne
      Jun 24,2021
      ▻https://euromedmonitor.org/fr/article/4476/Cisjordanie-:-Euro-Med-Monitor-exige-une-enqu%C3%AAte-urgente-et-ind

      ▻https://www.rfi.fr/fr/moyen-orient/20210624-mort-du-militant-nizar-banat-apr%C3%A8s-son-arrestation-par-l-autorit%C

Palestinians need be rid of an Authority that has become a surrogate for the occupation

Nizar Banat was deliberately murdered. The security forces that raided the outspoken activist’s home in the pre-dawn hours of Friday and beat him with iron rods in front of his wife and children were the assassins. But the main responsibility lies personally with the president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas. A crime like this could never have been committed without his knowledge, authorisation, and incitement. The thousands of mourners who gathered at Banat’s funeral in his hometown south of Hebron on Friday were right to demand his removal and the downfall of the PA. (...)

In the past years, new demographic groups have been introduced to Lebanon, creating a population pyramid that has been described as a “miracle,” a constellation that only happens during wartime and can only continue “by chance.” It is the same chance that has so far prevented the country from collapsing. However, it is clear that the country is moving toward an inevitable conflict between the various heterogenous groups living in it.

[May 2013] 15 May, 2013, marked the 65th anniversary of the #Nakba - when 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from the territory that became #Israel. In #1948, more than 50% of the entire Palestinian population was ethnically cleansed. In commemoration of the Nakba, and the displacement that continues #today, VP released ‘An Ongoing Displacement’. The graphic references the iconic ‘Disappearing Palestine’ image, adding a layer of detail that quantitatively catalogues the multiple dimensions of Palestinian #displacement and loss of #land.

A United Nations school sheltering displaced Palestinians in central Gaza came under Israeli fire on Tuesday as a team was inspecting damage from a day earlier, a UN official said. The official said a team, with Israeli clearance, was at the school run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees #UNRWA in Al-Maghazi when Israeli tank #shelling resumed, hitting the building on Tuesday afternoon. “Yesterday we got reports that it was shelled and so today we sent our guys down to investigate and see which side the fire came from,” the official said, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity. read more
