Saudi Ritz Carlton prisoner dies after torture

One of the Saudi prisoners at the Ritz Carlton has died under torture, according to London-based newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi.

Major general Ali Alqahtani, who was detained in early November as part of an alleged anti-corruption drive, had been working in the royal guard forces.

He was the manager of the private office of Prince Turki Bin Abdullah, the son of former king Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, according to the newspaper.

Alqahtani died on 12 December after being tortured with electric shocks, and his family struggled to recognise him after receiving his body, according to sources, the newspaper reported.

According to these sources, “the meetings, which are part of a series of meetings taking place outside Lebanon as well,” began a short while back but were hindered by the Arab pressures, specifically, by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, “the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz created a more relaxed atmosphere, removed the element of personal hatred towards Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from the equation and helped speed up Norwegian efforts.”

The sources also stressed that “the current Norwegian effort has nothing to do with the Oslo Forum in which Assad’s media advisor, Dr. Buthaina Shaaban, participated last June at the invitation of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.”

He received his early education at Princes’ School in Riyadh, which was established by King Abdulaziz in 1356 to provide education for his children. There he studied religion and modern science, and celebrated the completion of memorizing the whole Quran on Sunday, 12/8/1364 H.

Saudi Arabia will donate $200 million to Palestinian municipal councils, Saudi media reported Sunday. Saudi Minister of Municipal Affairs Mansour Ibn Mitib announced the funding at the inauguration of the 13th congress of the Organization of Islamic Cities and Capitals in Mecca, the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh reported. The funding, allocated by Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, will help develop and expand infrastructure in Palestinian cities to support residents against “Zionist judaization and settlement attacks,” the minister said. It will be used for the maintenance, expansion and renovation of water refinement stations and power plants, he said, and to develop sewage refineries and improve hospitals and medical centers.

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz on Saturday demanded a UN resolution condemning insults on monotheistic religions after a low-budget film produced in the US sparked deadly protests last month.

“I demand a UN resolution that condemns any country or group that insults religions and prophets,” he said during a meeting at his palace with religious figures and heads of hajj delegations in the Mina valley where pilgrims were performing final rituals of hajj.
