_ Khalida Jarrar , a member of the political bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), said in an interview with Al-Monitor that the gateway to resolving the contentious issue of Palestinian reconciliation and electing a new president lies in revitalizing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and holding democratic elections_

Al-Monitor: What is your opinion concerning the effort that France is leading to resume negotiations? Can a breakthrough be achieved in light of the political atmosphere that prevails in Israel today?

Jarrar: I do not think that French efforts will lead to palpable results. On the contrary, I view them as a waste of time and an attempt to circumvent international resolutions. Instead of the French or other similar efforts, it would be better to demand the convening of an international conference endowed with far-reaching powers, in keeping with international resolutions relevant to the Palestinian cause, which, above anything else, affirm the need to end the Israeli occupation.

Al-Monitor: There are those who posit that Israel decided to punish you due to your strong support for joining the International Criminal Court [ICC]. Do you agree with this assessment, and are you satisfied with the pace of Palestinian efforts to join the court?

Jarrar: Israeli authorities arrested me for many reasons, among them my membership on the Supreme National Committee for Coordination with the ICC and because I refused to abide by a decision of the Israeli occupation forces to send me to the city of Jericho [as banishment] in August 2014. Add to that the fact that I constantly visited Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails and participated in many of the political and cultural events held in the West Bank. As a result, occupation authorities wanted to distance me from my Palestinian community. As for Palestinian efforts to join the ICC, to date I have not witnessed any serious Palestinian efforts to follow-up on the dossier, which, in my opinion, demonstrates clear laxity on the part of the Palestinians.

Al-Monitor: What are the latest developments concerning the relationship between the PFLP and the Palestinian Authority [PA] in light of the latest crisis subsequent to their dispute about the PA’s political conduct and [the] April 2016 decision [by Mahmoud Abbas, in his capacity as PLO chairman] to withhold funding to the PFLP, which exacerbated tensions between them to the point where PFLP members burned effigies of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza?

Jarrar: Irrespective of the details associated with these differences, it is clear that the situation of Palestinian division has preoccupied people with the multitude of its internal conflicts, sometimes between Fatah and Hamas and other times between other Palestinian factions that oppose one another. All these actions and practices emanate from a lack of national responsibility, particularly in light of the fact that Palestinians are passing through a critical historical and political period that requires drafting a unified strategy that transcends internal Palestinian tensions while maintaining the need for Palestinian factions to reassess their espoused political approach.

During the recent Israeli-Palestinian confrontations in the West Bank and Jerusalem, media outlets have filmed what appear to be armed civilians arresting and handing Palestinian demonstrators over to the Israel Defense Forces. These men, called mistaravim, wear Arab clothing to look like Palestinians as they carry out undercover missions against and sometimes kill Palestinians wanted by the IDF.

Imagine ceci : Le téléphone sonne, c’est l’armée israélienne, qui te somme d’évacuer ta maison, tu vas être bombardé dans dix minutes, tu imagines, après dix minutes, toute ton histoire sera effacée de la surface de la terre, tes biens, les photos des frères et des fils, des choses que tu aimes, ta chaise, tes livres, le dernier recueil de poèmes que tu as lu, la lettre de ta sœur émigrée à l’étranger, les souvenirs des êtres chers à ton cœur, l’odeur de ton lit, la boucle des cheveux de ta fille, la chaleur de ton fauteuil, tes vieux vêtements, ton tapis de prière, les bijoux de ton épouse, les économies de toute une vie. Tout cela te passe dans l’esprit en dix minutes, Tu sens cette douleur quand finalement tu décides de ne prendre que tes papiers et sortir de la maison pour mourir mille fois, ou refuser d’évacuer la maison, et mourir une seule fois.

Je me suis précipitée hors de mon lit quand j’ai entendu mon petit frère dire : « Hors de la maison, ils vont bombarder nos voisins ! » Ca nous a pris deux minutes pour nous habiller avec ce que nous avions sous la main. Nous avons quitté la maison, en laissant tout ce que nous avions pour sauver notre vie, sans avoir où aller. Nous nous sommes dirigés du côté d’une école de l’UNRWA, en attendant qu’Israël bombarde la maison de nos voisins récemment rénovée. Ce qui m’a fait le plus mal, c’est de voir ma mère, cette femme épaisse, essayant de son mieux de marcher le plus vite possible, pour s’éloigner un peu de la maison visée. En voyant tous nos voisins qui couraient dans les rues et d’autres qui attendaient devant leur maison que tous les membres de leur famille soient prêts à fuir, j’ai cru que cela devenait de plus en plus fou et brutal, ici à Gaza. Nous sommes retournés à la maison quand nous avons appris qu’Israël envoyait de faux messages et SMS à mon peuple, au risque que la menace contre nos voisins ne soit pas fausse. Le but était de nous faire flipper comme si les bombardements continuels ne suffisaient pas à effrayer les enfants et même les jeunes. Nous sommes seuls. Nous voulons la fin de cette agression. Barghouti , qui a répondu à nos questions par écrit, prévient que l’alternative à une solution à deux Etats est un « conflit permanent » qui ne connaîtra pas de juste milieu. Le dirigeant emprisonné a déclaré qu’Israël n’était pas intéressé par la paix, ajoutant qu’ « aucune des méthodes de la résistance ne devrait être abandonnée », du moment qu’elle est en conformité avec le droit international.

Barghouti a également noté que le « processus de paix a provoqué de grands dégâts à l’intérieur du Fatah », tout en exhortant les factions palestiniennes à se réconcilier. Il a également critiqué la récente initiative de paix arabe à l’initiative du Qatar comme « la plus en recul de toutes celles qui ont jamais été faites par les Arabes pour trouver un accord avec Israël ».
