He has served as acting general coordinator for April 6 since the arrest of his predecessor, Ahmed Maher, in 2013. Ali was one of the movement’s cofounders and has held several different leadership positions in the group.

In January 2015, Ali was among several liberal and leftist activists whose assets were frozen after the judicial committee tasked with identifying the assets of the Muslim Brotherhood added their names to its list of suspects.

The movement was established in 2008 to help workers in Al-Mahalla al-Kubra stage a successful strike on April 6 of that year. It subsequently grew into one of Egypt’s foremost youth movements, and until recently was celebrated as an orchestrator of the January 25 revolution. However, a court banned the group’s activities in 2014 after ruling that it was involved in espionage and acts that tarnish the national image.

April 6 cofounders Ahmed Maher and Mohamed Adel were sentenced to three years in prison in 2013 along with activist Ahmed Douma with charges of protesting without a permit and assaulting police.

Four other members of the movement were released from custody earlier this month pending investigations into charges of illegally protesting.

Par ailleurs, 39 mineurs ont été condamnés à dix ans de prison. Tous étaient accusés de « rassemblement illégal » et « troubles à l’ordre public » pour avoir participé à la manifestation qui s’est déroulée sur plusieurs jours en décembre 2011 devant le siège du Conseil des ministres, près de la place Tahrir au Caire.

Ahmed Maher, the jailed former head of the April 6 Youth Movement, has broken his hunger strike, the group said in a statement on Monday.
Maher, who stopped eating on 15 September, will pause his strike until his next appeal session on 27 January.

He is serving a three-year jail term – along with two other prominent activists, Ahmed Douma and Mohamed Adel – on charges of holding unauthorised demonstrations and using force against the police.

Many activists, in and out of jail, are on hunger strike to protest lengthy preventative detention and demand amending the protest law which they deem too restrictive and which has seen hundreds arrested under its provisions.

Among those on strike is Alaa Abdel-Fattah, Sanaa Seif and others in different lawsuits. April 6 co-founder Ahmed Douma has also been on strike with a deteriorating health condition.

A Cairo court banned all activities of the April 6 Youth Movement, ruling on a lawsuit that accused the group of espionage and defaming the Egyptian state.

The movement, which played an important role in the January 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak, was subject to a campaign of defamation that accused its members of being agents of foreign countries, paid to stir instability in the country.

The move was criticised by rights advocates, who say the ruling was part of a crackdown on dissent.

Egypt : A Cairo criminal court has adjourned the trial of prominent activist Ahmed Douma and 286 others to 22 November and referred one of their lawyers Khaled Ali, a former 2012 presidential candidate, to prosecutors for questioning over “fomenting chaos in the courtroom.”

A Cairo court has delayed an appeal against the jail sentences of well-known political activists Ahmed Douma, Ahmed Maher and Mohamed to 10 February.

The appellate court also refused on Monday to suspend the jail sentences handed out to Douma, Maher and Adel for allegedly staging unauthorised protests and attacking security forces last November.

The three men are leading figures of the protests that ignited the popular revolt against deposed president Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Maher founded the April 6 Youth movement and Adel is an active member of the group. Douma is a long-time activist. Together they were sentenced last month to three years in jail and fined LE50,000.

Egypt ordered on Thursday three prominent political activists to stand trial on protest-related charges, judicial officials said, in another sign of growing intolerance of dissent. Le parquet a émis un mandat d’amener contre cinq militants politiques, accusés d’avoir incité à la violence lors (des affrontements) qui ont eu lieu devant le bureau du Guide de la confrérie islamiste dans le quartier de Moqattam (au Caire) a indiqué la Mena.

Ils ont interdiction de quitter le pays et leur nom a été placé sur une liste de personnes interdites de voyage en raison des investigations, a précisé la Mena.

Les cinq militants —Alaa Abdel Fattah, Ahmed Douma, Karim el-Chaer, Hazem Abdel Azim et Ahmed Eid— font partie des jeunes militants pro-démocratie célèbres pour leur opposition au président Morsi et les Frères musulmans dont il est issu.

Le parquet a également convoqué la militante Nawara Negm pour l’interroger au sujet d’accusations concernant son éventuelle implication dans les affrontements de vendredi.

Ces affrontements entre des manifestants de l’opposition et des islamistes près du siège des Frères musulmans avaient fait plus de 160 blessés.

Si les enquêtes prouvent que certains hommes politiques sont impliqués, des mesures nécessaires seront prises contre eux, quel que soit leur niveau, avait affirmé M. Morsi, dans des déclarations diffusées dimanche sur son compte twitter ainsi que par la télévision d’Etat.

L’opposition et plusieurs journaux égyptiens ont vivement réagi lundi à ces propos.

On peut s’attendre au pire. Les menaces de Morsi signifient la mort de l’Etat de droit. Il démontre qu’il est le président des Frères musulmans seulement, a déclaré à l’AFP Khaled Daoud, porte-parole du Front du salut national (FSN), la principale coalition de l’opposition.
