Dans le contexte actuel, l’UJFP a souhaité publier sur son site ce texte de 2012.
« C’est loin d’être la première fois que l’on maquille, exploite et efface notre histoire mais c’est la goutte d’eau qui a fait déborder le vase, alors... on a créé le Comité des Juifs de Baghdad à Ramat Gan ».
C’est ainsi que l’écrivain, poète et militant Almog Behar décrit la décision d’un groupe de juifs d’origine arabe et kurde de s’élever énergiquement contre les efforts renouvelés de propagande du gouvernement israélien visant à contrer les droits des réfugiés palestiniens en utilisant les revendications des juifs qui ont quitté des pays arabes pour Israël dans les années 1950.
Le Comité des Juifs de Baghdad à Ramat Gan, nouvellement formé et dont fait partie Almog Behar, a réagi (...) dans une déclaration extraordinaire publiée sur Facebook :
Nous visons à demander des compensations du gouvernement irakien – et non de l’Autorité palestinienne - pour nos biens perdus et nous n’accepterons pas que la perte de nos biens soit compensée par la perte des biens d’autrui (c’est-à-dire des réfugiés palestiniens) ou que des compensations soient transférées à des organes qui ne nous représentent pas (c’est-à-dire au gouvernement israélien).
La déclaration continuait avec une demande que la complicité d’Israël dans le départ des juifs irakiens de leur patrie fasse l’objet d’une enquête, y compris en matière d’actes terroristes perpétrés contre des juifs :
Nous demandons la mise en place d’une commission d’enquête chargée d’examiner :
1) Si et comment des négociations ont été menées en 1950 entre le Premier Ministre israélien David Ben Gourion et le Premier Ministre irakien Nouri Al-Said et si Ben Gourion a informé Al-Said qu’il serait autorisé à prendre possession des biens des juifs irakiens s’il acceptait de les envoyer en Israël.
2) Qui a ordonné l’attentat à la bombe contre la synagogue Massouda Chem-Tov de Baghdad et si le Mossad israélien et/ou ses agents ont été impliqués. S’il est établi que Ben Gourion mené en 1950 des négociations sur le sort des biens des juifs irakiens et a instruit le Mossad de mener un attentat à la bombe contre la synagogue de la communauté afin d’accélérer notre fuite d’Irak, alors nous déposerons une plainte auprès d’un tribunal international demandant la moitié de la somme totale des compensations pour notre statut de réfugiés au gouvernement irakien et la moitié au gouvernement israélien.

PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki said, as Haaretz reports, that the resolution is a “French-sponsored version.”
Here’s why I hope that one of the permanent members – almost certainly it will be the Obama administration – vetoes this terrible resolution.
I evaluate any steps related to Palestine through a simple and consistent lens: does this measure take us closer to the fulfillment of Palestinian rights, all Palestinian rights?
These rights are set out most succinctly in the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS): an end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian land during and since 1967; an end to Israel’s institutionalized racism against Palestinians in present-day Israel (the areas on which Israel was established in 1948); and the return of Palestinian refugees to their land and homes.
I believe in a positive vision of a Palestine whole and free, where all people live in a decolonized and reunified territory without discrimination based on religion or ethnicity and without sectarian territorial partition.
This is why I have consistently opposed steps to “recognize” the so-called “State of Palestine.”
Those “recognition” initiatives are an effort to undo the death of the “two-state solution” and rescue Israel as a racist Jewish state, as Joseph Massad explained in an essential article for The Electronic Intifada this week.

A standard objection to the Palestinian campaign for the boycott of Israel is that it would cut off “dialogue” and hurt the chances of peace. We’ve heard this again in the wake of Professor Stephen Hawking’s laudable decision to withdraw from Israel’s Presidential Conference in response to requests from Palestinian academics – but it would be hard to think of a more unconvincing position as far as Palestinians are concerned.
One of the most deceptive aspects of the so-called peace process is the pretence that Palestinians and Israelis are two equal sides, equally at fault, equally responsible – thus erasing from view the brutal reality that Palestinians are an occupied, colonised people, dispossessed at the hands of one of the most powerful militaries on earth.
For more than two decades, under the cover of this fiction, Palestinians have engaged in internationally-sponsored “peace talks” and other forms of dialogue, only to watch as Israel has continued to occupy, steal and settle their land, and to kill and maim thousands of people with impunity.
While there are a handful of courageous dissenting Israeli voices, major Israeli institutions, especially the universities, have been complicit in this oppression by, for example, engaging in research and training partnerships with the Israeli army. Israel’s government has actively engaged academics, artists and other cultural figures in international “Brand Israel” campaigns to prettify the country’s image and distract attention from the oppression of Palestinians.
The vast majority of Palestinians, meanwhile, have been disenfranchised by the official peace process as their fate has been placed in the hands of venal and comprised envoys such as Tony Blair, and US and EU governments that only seem to find the courage to implement international law and protect human rights when it comes to the transgressions of African or Arab states......

Israël dit que son bombardement de Gaza vient en « représailles » des tirs de roquettes partant de ce territoire, mais Israël a envenimé la situation ces jours derniers avec une recrudescence des exécutions extrajudiciaires. Aucune information dans l’immédiat n’est arrivée sur des blessés.
Les politiciens israéliens réclament du sang, l’un d’eux exige que le Ramadan devienne un « mois de ténèbres ». De leur côté, les États-Unis appellent à la « retenue ».

Le Comité international de la Croix Rouge (CICR) refuse d’appeler Israël à relâcher immédiatement et inconditionnellement près de 200 enfants palestiniens détenus par l’armée israélienne.
« D’habitude, le CICR n’appelle pas à la libération générale de prisonniers. Nous suivons leur situation et si nous avons des inquiétudes nous discutons avec les autorités des questions concernant leur traitement », a dit à Electronic Intifada Nadia Dibsy, porte parole de l’organisation à Jérusalem, à propos de ces enfants.
Les commentaires de Dibsy sont venus au lendemain d’une déclaration du CICR appelant à la « libération inconditionnelle » de trois colons israéliens, deux de 16 ans et un de 19 ans, qui auraient été enlevés en Cisjordanie le 12 juin par des inconnus.
« Nous sommes très inquiets du sort des teenagers. One need not agree with all of his views to find the book well worth reading. So much ink has been spilled on Israel and Palestine that at times it seems impossible to encounter anything new or stimulating, but the arguments Abunimah assembles here are so thoughtful and forceful, and placed within a comprehensive, long-cultivated coherent perspective, that it’s almost impossible to read it without thinking about all sorts of old questions in new ways. International charity Oxfam is standing by its “Global Ambassador” Scarlett Johansson, at least for now, despite the fact that the Hollywood actress has come out in full support of Israeli settlements and profiteering in the occupied West Bank.
Johansson has faced strong criticism and media scrutiny for a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with SodaStream, an Israeli firm that operates in an illegal colony in the occupied West Bank.
In a statement yesterday, Johansson defended the deal and praised Israeli settlements.
“We have been engaged in dialogue with Scarlett Johansson and she has now expressed her position in a statement, including stressing her pride in her past work with Oxfam,” Oxfam spokesperson Kate Pattison told The Electronic Intifada in an email this morning.
“Oxfam is now considering the implications [of] her new statement and what it means for Ms Johansson’s role as an Oxfam global ambassador,” Pattison added.
Laundering settlements
In a statement to The Huffington Post yesterday, Johansson attempted launder the SodaStream deal as something beneficial for “peace”:
“I remain a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine,” the actress said. “SodaStream is a company that is not only committed to the environment but to building a bridge to peace between Israel and Palestine, supporting neighbors working alongside each other, receiving equal pay, equal benefits and equal rights. That is what is happening in their Ma’ale Adumim factory every working day.”
Maale Adumim is an Israeli colony built on occupied Palestinian land in violation of international law.
Choosing celebrity over principle
Johansson’s clear endorsement of Israeli colonization and regurgitation of SodaStream propaganda is at sharp odds with Oxfam’s own policy.
In a statement on 23 January, Oxfam said it had informed the actress that “Oxfam believes that businesses that operate in settlements further the ongoing poverty and denial of rights of the Palestinian communities that we work to support. Oxfam is opposed to all trade from Israeli settlements, which are illegal under international law.”
Johansson’s statement indicates that the “dialogue” Oxfam has been hiding behind has failed to impress on the actress that profiting from Israeli crimes is totally incompatible with a role promoting human rights and development.
But at least for now, Oxfam has chosen to back celebrity over principle by continuing to stand behind Johansson.
In doing so, it has taken a clear position against Palestinians and their rights and chosen complicity with Israeli occupation and colonization.
Update
In light of Oxfam’s comments to The Electronic Intifada and Johansson’s statement, US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, Adalah-NY and Jewish Voice for Peace today expressed outrage at Johansson’s endorsement of settlements and Oxfam’s failure to act on it.
“We demand Oxfam respond immediately and drop her as their Global Ambassador in accordance with their own stated position that settlements are a major barrier to peace and contributor to poverty,” said the US Campaign’s Ramah Kudaimi.

L’économie souterraine
En dépit de la violence gratuite que subissent les travailleurs des tunnels, si les autorités égyptiennes voulaient réellement fermer les tunnels pour de bon, elles savent où ils se trouvent et la zone dans laquelle ces tunnels fonctionnent est relativement limitée.
Et, dans ce cas, pourquoi l’Égypte ne laisse-t-elle pas tout simplement les marchandises circuler en surface ? Longtemps, le but d’Israël a été d’isoler Gaza économiquement, de se débarrasser de ce qu’il considère comme un fardeau (encore qu’on ne l’imaginerait pas en voyant les importantes quantités de biens de consommation israéliens dont Gaza est forcé de dépendre – au grand bénéfice des producteurs israéliens).
L’Égypte refuse manifestement de permettre à Israël de lui faire endosser la responsabilité de Gaza. Les Palestiniens non plus ne veulent pas voir Gaza isolé politiquement et économiquement du reste de la Palestine (bien qu’ils veulent que soit mis un terme au siège et à la dépendance forcée vis-à-vis d’Israël !)
Et le nouveau gouvernement égyptien des Frères musulmans a poursuivi la politique de Moubarak consistant à agir comme un sous-traitant des États-Unis et d’Israël quand il s’agit des Palestiniens.
Tout cela empêche la frontière entre l’Égypte et Gaza de se muer dans un proche avenir en important carrefour commercial. Les tunnels, semblerait-il, sont un compromis qui coûte cher en vies humaines : les importations si désespérément nécessaires entrent, elles soutiennent l’économie, mais sans légitimité officielle ou sans céder aux intentions israéliennes d’isoler Gaza en permanence.
Sans aucun doute, les tunnels aident Gaza à survivre au siège en cours mais, selon Hamdi Shaqurra, du Centre palestinien des droits de l’homme (PCHR), le secteur privé de Gaza, l’épine dorsale de son économie, déjà fortement diminué par les restrictions et sanctions israéliennes, périclite de plus en plus.
« Nous sommes passés d’une économie formelle à une économie souterraine », nous a expliqué Shaqurra lorsque nous sommes allés lui rendre visite à son bureau à Gaza City.
Les conséquences à long terme de cette situation peuvent comprendre une aggravation de la régression et de la désinstitutionnalisation de l’économie de Gaza, tout en remettant des pans importants de cette même économie dans les mains d’organisations clandestines intallées de l’autre côté de la frontière.
Un siège contre le peuple et contre le savoir
Quand nous avons quitté Gaza mercredi, les participantes au Festival palestinien, l’écrivaine américano-palestinienne Susan Abulhawa et les journalistes égyptiennes Lina Atallah et Nora Younis, ont eu un aperçu de la réalité cruelle et arbitraire sévissant au carrefour de Gaza et décrite par Ayah Bashir.
« Plus de deux ans après le soulèvement en Égypte, le carrefour de Rafah reste une porte de prison », écrit Bashir, alors que les Palestiniens doivent mendier et implorer de façon humiliante pour pouvoir sortir à quelque fin que ce soit et, parfois même, pour pouvoir bénéficier d’un traitement qui leur sauvera la vie.
L’Égypte se montre la plus sévère à l’égard des hommes de moins de 40 ans, qui sont souvent refoulés sans raison. Cette politique, apparemment, est copiée sur celle d’Israël qui limite sévèrement les mouvements des Palestiniens de moins de 40 ans entre Jérusalem et d’autres parties de la Cisjordanie occupée.
Pendant que nous avons dû attendre trois heures – ce qui est relativement peu – dans le hall de départ égyptien, sale et plein de monde, avant de pouvoir quitter Gaza, j’ai parlé avec plusieurs Palestiniens qui attendaient, très nerveux, ne sachant pas si l’appareil sécuritaire, qui n’a toujours pas changé depuis l’époque de Moubarak, allait les laisser sortir.

The Palestine Festival of Literature (PalFest) was established in 2008 with the aim of supporting life in Palestine, breaking the siege imposed on Palestinians by the Israeli military occupation and strengthening cultural links between Palestine and the rest of the world.
Since 2008 an annual literary festival has been the center of activities which have brought dozens of influential literary figures from the UK, US and Arab world to teach workshops and perform in free public events. Three main speakers came to Gaza to participate in the Palestine Festival of Literature: Ali abu-Neama, Susan abulhawa, and Lina Attalah.
Ali Abunimah is the co-founder of the award-winning online publication The Electronic Intifada, established in 2001. Abu- Nimah deplores the role of the Arab countries in lifting the blockade on Gaza. He expected the Gaza blockade to be lifted after Arab revolutions but to no avail.

The Swedish Government and the EU insist that there is a severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and that the border crossings must be opened; this is a position that happens to coincide with the “Ship to Gaza” position. Bahrain rights defender Maryam Al-Khawaja pulls out of UNESCO ceremony over honor to Israel’s Peres

Bahrain human rights defender Maryam Al-Khawaja has pulled out of a UNESCO human rights conference that is honoring her father, political prisoner Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, because the same event is honoring Israeli President Shimon Peres.
Amnesty International considers Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja and other Bahrain rights activists held in prison “to be prisoners of conscience, held solely for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly” and has called for their immediate, unconditional release.
Maryam Al-Khawaja was scheduled to speak in her father’s place at the 13th Annual UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights Conference at the University of Connecticut on 23 October, titled “Legacies Of Human Rights Leadership And Struggles.”
“Whilst I am honored that you chose my father, I am also utterly disappointed that you would honor him alongside a person who has been responsible for many human rights violations and should be put on trial, not honored,” Al-Khawaja wrote in an open letter to UNESCO, in her personal capacity, announcing her withdrawal, a copy of which she sent to The Electronic Intifada.

Israelis and Palestinians generally don’t agree on much, but a recent poll, financed by the Konrad Adenauer and Ford Foundations (pdf), suggested that 70 per cent of Israelis, and an almost equal proportion of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, rated the chances for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in the next five years as “non-existent” or “low”. They are right. There won’t be an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza and there will be no “two-state solution”. For decades, there has been a consensus –backed by numerous UN resolutions – that Israel’s colonies are illegal and must be removed. Yet, instead of confronting Israel, the “international community” has been complicit, channelling aid and Palestinian energies into maintaininga bantustan-like “Palestinian Authority” that, far from being the nucleus of a state, acts as an economic/military subcontractor for Israel. The dilemma, from a Zionist perspective, is that the settler project succeeded well but not quite well enough. Though Israel is entrenched in the West Bank, the overall Jewish population in historic Palestine hovers at just 50 per cent. In a short while, Palestinians will once again be the majority, just as they were before 1948 when more than 700,000 of them were expelled. There is no Zionist solution to Israel’s dilemma that does not perpetuate gross injustice. Despite the simplistic mantras about a twostate solution, Palestinians and Israelis cannot be separated into ethnically homogeneous nations without the risk of wholesale ethnic cleansing and violence, such as occurred when Israel was created.
If two ethnically distinct states are unachievable and unjust, where can we go? Remarkably, the Konrad Adenauer/Ford poll found that 36 per cent of Israelis (28 per cent counting only Jews) and 31 per cent of Palestinians agreed with the argument that “there is a need to begin to think about a solution of a one state for two people in which Arabs and Jews enjoy equality”.
These numbers are surprisingly high, given that no leading political party or international figure has advocated such an outcome; indeed, they routinely denounce it.
