US deaths from alcohol, drugs and suicide at all-time high
    By Kate Randall
    8 March 2019

More than 150,000 Americans died from alcohol and drug-induced fatalities and suicide in 2017. This is more than twice as many as in 1999 and the highest number since recordkeeping began in that year. This skyrocketing rate of so-called deaths of despair was confirmed in a new analysis released this week by Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and Well Being Trust (WBT).

As CEO compensation soars to new heights
Fifty-one million US households cannot afford “survival budget”

    26 May 2018

Newly released data cast a revealing light on the state of income inequality in America a decade after the Great Recession. While CEO pay soars to unheard of heights, nearly 51 million US households cannot afford basic necessities like housing, food and health care. The figures show that a tiny oligarchy of the super-rich continues to tighten its grip over society, as more and more families struggle to get by.

The New York Times on Friday published the Equilar 200 Highest-Paid CEO Rankings for 2017. The survey, conducted annually by the executive compensation consulting firm Equilar, lists the pay packages awarded to CEOs at US public companies with more than $1 billion in revenue.

Trump threats on South China Sea heighten risk of nuclear war
    25 January 2017

Just days after taking office, the Trump administration has set course for a conflict with China over the South China Sea that threatens military clashes and war.

President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, on Tuesday backed up an earlier assertion by the administration’s nominee for secretary of state, former Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, that Washington would bar Chinese access to islets being built up by Beijing in the South China Sea.

The confirmation of Trump’s pick for education secretary, billionaire proponent of school privatization Betsy DeVos, is being rushed through despite blatant conflicts of interest and her ignorance of basic federal education laws. In a letter Monday, Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions, rejected Democratic Party requests for a second hearing. The Republican-controlled Senate will vote on the confirmation January 31.

In his final appearance before the Senate Finance Committee Tuesday, Rep. By Patrick Martin

President Donald Trump has ordered US government agencies to expedite approval of the Keystone XL and Dakota Access pipelines, running roughshod over opposition by environmentalists and Native American tribes.

The Dakota Access Pipe Line (DAPL) has encountered impassioned opposition, with thousands gathering despite the deep freeze of the North Dakota winter to block completion of the 1,200-mile-long pipeline, which is to bring oil from the Bakken fields to refineries in the Midwest and South. The pipeline’s final link would cross the Missouri River just north of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, threatening its water supply and tearing up land deemed sacred in tribal culture.

More than 100 immigrants found locked in Houston, Texas house
    By Kate Randall
    21 March 2014

Police and federal immigration authorities found 108 immigrants locked in a squalid home in south Houston on Wednesday. The 93 males and 15 females, including children as young as five years old, came mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, according to authorities. They had been held against their will for days in the small, single-story house with one bathroom, no hot water and little food.

The horrific discovery is an indictment of the immigration policies of the Obama administration, which continues to deport immigrants in unprecedented numbers. Undocumented immigrants and their children, seeking jobs and a better life in the US, become prey of smugglers and human traffickers as they seek entry across the Mexican border.

With the full implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) less than seven months away, mounting evidence demonstrates that the health care reform signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2010 will result in deep cutbacks in medical care, while raising costs for the vast majority of ordinary Americans.

Life expectancy in the United States continues to lag behind that in Western Europe, Canada, Australia and Japan, according to a new report commissioned by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study’s findings are a stinging indictment of social inequality in the US and its impact on the conditions of life for wide layers of the American population, young and old.

The panel of experts from the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine identified the inaccessibility of health care, high levels of poverty and income inequality, as well as the prevalence of gun violence as major contributing factors to the poor life expectancy rate in the US.

Texas judge approves ban on Planned Parenthood funding
    By Kate Randall
    3 January 2013

A state judge ruled Monday that Texas can cut off funding to Planned Parenthood’s family planning programs, forcing thousands of women to seek alternative state-approved doctors for their annual exams, cancer screenings and contraceptives. The move comes under conditions where primary care providers for poor women are already in short supply.

Judge Gary Harger said Texas can exclude qualified doctors and clinics from receiving funding through the state’s Women’s Health Program (WHP) if clinics “advocate” for abortion rights—the so-called affiliate rule. The WHP currently provides preventive care to 110,000 poor women, including 48,000 served by Planned Parenthood.

  • More than 50 million face hunger in the US

    http://www.wsws.org/articles/2012/sep2012/food-s07.shtml
    By Kate Randall
    7 September 2012

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported Wednesday that 14.9 percent of Americans faced food insecurity in 2011. This means that one in six people lives in a household that is at risk of hunger. Of the more than 50 million people in the US for whom hunger is a reality, nearly 17 million are children.

In 2011, 5.7 percent of US households, or 6.9 million households, had what the USDA terms “very low food security.” This means that the food intake of some household members was reduced or the normal eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year due to limited resources.

The barbarity of the US death penalty system was on display last night when the state of Texas executed the second mentally disabled death row prisoner in less than three weeks. Marvin Wilson, 54, was sent to his death after the US Supreme Court failed to grant him a stay of execution, ruling less than two hours before his lethal injection was set to begin.

Wilson was killed by a lethal dose of the sedative pentobarbital injected into his veins by prison authorities at about 6 p.m. local time. Death row prisoner Yokamon Hearn was put to death on July 19, the first Texas prisoner to be executed utilizing the new one-drug protocol.

North Carolina legislature moves to gut Racial Justice Act, resume executions

    16 June 2012

A move is under way in North Carolina to implement changes to a law that has allowed death row inmates to use evidence of racial bias to challenge their sentences. The North Carolina House of Representatives on Tuesday passed Senate Bill 416 in a 73-47 vote, essentially rewriting the state’s Racial Justice Act (RJA) to render it ineffective.

Passed in 2009, the RJA allows death row inmates to present statistical evidence alleging racial bias in their trials, convictions and sentencing. If a condemned prisoner is able to demonstrate racial bias, his or her sentence can be converted to life in prison. The prisoner cannot, however, be paroled or set free on this basis.
