The latest 10 years of the Great Acceleration graphs show signs of both but cannot distinguish between these scenarios, or other possibilities. En comparant les données archéologiques sur l’apparition de l’élevage dans la région saharienne avec l’évolution sur la durée de certains types de végétation associés à une région désertique, l’archéologue a pu bâtir sa théorie.

Voici environ 8.000 ans, les premières communautés pastorales se seraient installées dans la région du Nil, et auraient commencé à se répandre vers l’ouest. Et cette progression serait synchrone avec l’augmentation de la végétation désertique.

Comment cela a-t-il pu se produire ? L’arrivée de tribus dont la ressource principale est l’élevage a eu des conséquences sur l’environnement. Ces civilisations ont aménagé l’espace, incendié des zones qu’ils souhaitaient dédier à leurs animaux, et plus globalement procédé à une déforestation. Le changement dans la végétation, et notamment la disparition de zones de forêts et de savanes, a pu changer la quantité de lumière solaire reflétée par le sol, qui a son tour aurait influencé la circulation atmosphérique. Les moussons, qui irriguaient le Sahara, auraient alors faibli, poussant la région sur le chemin de la désertification.

La Chine est menacée. Ses déserts anciens, apparus il y a longtemps dans le nord et le centre du pays, continuent de s’étendre. De nouveaux sont en formation. Elles grignotent peu à peu les terres arables, dont le recul force de nombreuses populations villageoises à se déplacer. Les barrières végétales naturelles qui se dressent aux confins des déserts ne sont ni assez nombreuses ni assez puissantes pour retenir le sable qui s’envole et retombe sur Pékin. À chaque printemps, la capitale chinoise et sa région sont noyées, durant des jours entiers, dans les tempêtes de sable. Mêlant sédiments et poussières de sable, ce « dragon jaune » contre lequel les autorités se mobilisent affecte directement plus de deux cent cinquante millions de personnes. Et bien davantage encore si l’on ajoute les zones touchées au-delà des frontières de l’Empire du Milieu, jusqu’en Corée ou au Japon. Engagée contre l’avancée inexorable de ces déserts, une armée de trente-deux mille « faiseurs de pluie » se bat quotidiennement. Des équipes scientifiques sont également à pied d’œuvre pour réintroduire des espèces végétales dans les sols appauvris. Une « muraille verte », aussi longue que la mythique Grande Muraille, commence à sortir de terre pour faire barrage à l’ennemi.

As the working group articulated (▻http://www2.le.ac.uk/offices/press/press-releases/2016/august/media-note-anthropocene-working-group-awg) in a media note on Monday :
« Changes to the Earth system that characterize the potential Anthropocene Epoch include marked acceleration to rates of erosion and sedimentation; large-scale chemical perturbations to the cycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other elements; the inception of significant change to global climate and sea level; and biotic changes such as unprecedented levels of species invasions across the Earth. Many of these changes are geologically long-lasting, and some are effectively irreversible.

These and related processes have left an array of signals in recent strata, including plastic, aluminium and concrete particles, artificial radionuclides, changes to carbon and nitrogen isotope patterns, fly ash particles, and a variety of fossilizable biological remains. Many of these signals will leave a permanent record in the Earth’s strata. »

Guardian compiled more “evidence of the Anthropocene,” saying humanity has:
– Pushed extinction rates of animals and plants far above the long-term average. The Earth is now on course to see 75 percent of species become extinct in the next few centuries if current trends continue.
– Increased levels of climate-warming CO2 in the atmosphere at the fastest rate for 66m years, with fossil-fuel burning pushing levels from 280 parts per million before the industrial revolution to 400ppm and rising today.
– Put so much plastic in our waterways and oceans that microplastic particles are now virtually ubiquitous, and plastics will likely leave identifiable fossil records for future generations to discover.
– Doubled the nitrogen and phosphorous in our soils in the past century with our fertilizer use. This is likely to be the largest impact on the nitrogen cycle in 2.5bn years.
– Left a permanent layer of airborne particulates in sediment and glacial ice such as black carbon from fossil fuel burning.
