    When the journalist Kurt Eichenwald opened an animated image sent to him on Twitter in December, the message “You deserve a seizure for your posts” appeared in capital letters along with a blinding strobe light. Mr. Eichenwald, who has epilepsy, immediately suffered a seizure.

    On Friday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said it had arrested John Rayne Rivello, 29, at his home in Salisbury, Md., and accused him of sending the electronic file. The agency charged Mr. Rivello with criminal cyberstalking with the intent to kill or cause bodily harm.

    The unusual case has shown how online tools can be deployed as weapons capable of physical harm. The F.B.I. and the Dallas police led the investigation into Mr. Rivello, and the police said he sent the strobe light knowing that it was likely to lead Mr. Eichenwald, who has publicly discussed his epilepsy, into a seizure.

    After convincing Blair to support U.S. military action against Iraq, Bush turned to French President Jacques Chirac. “Jacques, you and I share a common faith. You’re Roman Catholic, I’m Methodist, but we are both Christians committed to the teachings of the Bible. We share one common Lord.” Chirac said he didn’t know where Bush was going with this. Then Bush said, “Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East. Biblical prophecies are being fulfilled. This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase His people’s enemies before a new age begins.” Chirac said he hung up called together his staff. “He said, ‘Gog and Magog.’ Do any of you know what he is talking about?” Nobody knew. “Find out.”

      L’anecdote a été rendue publique, il y a de cela quelques années, par l’historien et théologien protestant Thomas Römer. Celui-ci avait été contacté par Chirac en 2003 pour qu’on lui explique les prohéties d’Ezéchiel auxquelles Bush Jr avait fait référence devant lui pour justifier l’intervention en Irak, pensant accomplir ces prophéties.

      Plus largement, ce texte d’Ezéchiel explique les liens très forts qui se sont tissés entre les Etats-Unis et l’Etat d’Israël. « Pour George W. Bush, ce texte a des conséquences politiques, poursuit Thomas Römer. Comme de nombreux chrétiens américains, il croit que Dieu sera auprès d’Israël lors de la confrontation finale, donc que les ennemis de ce pays seront dans le camp de l’Antéchrist. Il soutiendra donc Israël sans faiblir, parce qu’il est intimement persuadé que, quand la fin des temps arrivera, il faudra être du côté d’Israël. »

      Voilà qui surprendra plus d’un Européen, habitué à des analyses davantage fondées sur la géopolitique, les rapports de force, la carte des pipelines transportant du pétrole que par le religieux, quand il est question de la politique étrangère des Etats-Unis.

      « Cette lecture américaine échappe effectivement aux Européens, qui ont perdu ce rapport aux textes bibliques, poursuit le théologien de l’UNIL. Les Allemands comprennent plus facilement George W. Bush que les Français ou les Suisses. Pour un Américain, ces questions sont centrales. Si on oublie le religieux dans l’analyse du soutien des Etats- Unis à Israël, on se trompe. »

      Pour ceux qui croient encore que c’est le fanatisme religieux musulman qui provoque des morts en réponse à la rationnalité et aux valeurs de laïcité des occidentaux.
