    But there’s something more complex happening here too, that’s probably best understood in terms of press scholar Daniel Hallin’s three-sphere model of how the media functions, from his 1986 book The Uncensored War. At the center is the sphere of consensus, mom-and-apple-pie country. Surrounding that, like a donut, is the sphere of legitimate debate, where journalists’ attention is usually focused, where there are two sides to every story and a need for objectivity and balance to be maintained.

    Beyond that, though, is the sphere of deviance, the outer darkness in which dwell “political actors and views which journalists and the political mainstream of society reject as unworthy of being heard.” The shoddy fact-checking directed at Ocasio-Cortez reflects a boundary-policing instinct, and an outdated one, considering that the entire political landscape has been irrevocably changed.

    To understand how shoddy it is — and the unspoken agenda involved — we need to take a closer look at the totality of what went down. Kessler was quoting from a snippet of AOC’s response to a question by Ta-Nehisi Coates in an MLK Day interview. The context is important, because context is everything in political discourse: What’s radical in one context is mom-and-apple-pie material in another.

    King, paradoxically, is both. The question asked and the answer given were both in King’s spirit — but not the mom-and-apple-pie version of him the media (and much of America) loves to celebrate. It more reflected the actual, radical Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke out against the “the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism,” and said, “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.”

    So, read in context, everything AOC said was true, even if we accept Kessler’s factual counterclaims! The entire fact-checking ritual was a charade. As I suggested earlier, it was really a boundary-policing episode, meant to keep her “radical” ideas outside the sphere of legitimate debate by portraying her as untrustworthy. Further, it was meant to deter others from similar infractions while trying to break through the barriers excluding them from legitimacy. (See AOC’s related Twitter thread on “gravitas” here.)

    But the problem is that Kessler’s implied boundaries are not worth policing, or even recognizing. The whole system is in crisis, and the mainstream media’s assessment of what is deviant, what reflects normative consensus and what represents legitimate debate bears little or no relationship to reality. Take two other examples AOC has been associated with — raising top marginal tax rates to 70 percent and a Green New Deal. The first idea drew immediate majority support — 59 percent in a poll for the Hill, including 56 percent of rural voters and 45 percent of Republicans—and scorn from the 1 percent at Davos.

    Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell laughed at the idea (video here), and said he thought it would be bad for economic growth. “Name a country where that’s worked,” he responded. “Ever.” Sitting there with him was MIT economist Erik Brynjolfsson, who supplied the example: the United States, throughout most of its post-World War II expansion. It was a rare, Marshall McLuhan-in-“Annie Hall” moment. Usually, when the super-rich or their sycophants spout off like that, truth does not intrude. Certainly not from the fact-checking media.

    But the media’s failure is even more striking when it comes to climate change and the Green New Deal. It’s still a rarity for the media to treat climate science as firmly within the sphere of consensus, where all reputable researchers say it belongs.

    In Olanda la legge vieta di interrompere una funziona religiosa: per questo centinaia di pastori da oltre tre settimane si alternano per evitare il rimpatrio di una famiglia ospitata in chiesa.

    In Olanda una chiesa protestante de l’Aja sta tenendo un culto da oltre tre settimane consecutive per proteggere una famiglia di migranti dall’espulsione dal Paese.

    La storia è tanto semplice quanto geniale: secondo la legge statale le forze dell’ordine non possono interrompere una funzione religiosa in corso. Centinaia di pastori si stanno dunque alternando per non far cessare mai il culto cui sta partecipando la famiglia in questione, una coppia armena con tre figli di 15, 19 e 21 anni. L’idea è venuta al presidente del consiglio generale della Chiesa protestante olandese, il pastore Theo Hettema, una volta saputo che la famiglia, da ben 8 anni nei Paesi Bassi, con un figlio iscritto all’università e gli altri alle scuole dell’obbligo, rischiava il rimpatrio perché non può più godere delle tutele internazionali in quanto l’Armenia, terra d’origine dei cinque, non è considerata nazione a rischio.

    I cinque, cristiani, frequentano la chiesa protestante della cittadina in cui risiedono, Katwijk, nei pressi proprio de L’Aja, e una delle figlie svolge volontariato in una associazione legata alla chiesa. L’ appello del pastore Hettema ha raccolto l’adesione di centinaia di colleghi e di moltissimi membri di chiesa, provenienti anche dai Comuni vicini. Tutti consapevoli che la splendida iniziativa non potrà durare in eterno, ma con la speranza di far nel mentre cambiare idea al governo, che ha però più volte affermato che la famiglia non ha i requisiti per rimanere nel Paese. Otto anni per ottenere una risposta sulla possibilità di asilo o meno in una nazione rischiano di essere un tragico record, e ignorare che la famiglia si sia oramai integrata nel nuovo contesto pare un’inutile cattiveria.

    Quando i 5 non partecipano alla funzione, si riposano nei locali sopra la cappella. Un tempo in Italia le chiese erano luoghi di asilo e rifugio in cui le forze dell’ordine non potevano entrare, ma da oltre un secolo le cose sono cambiate (secondo quanto normato prima dalle leggi Siccardi del 1850 e quindi dai Patti Lateranensi del 1929 il cui l’articolo 5 recita comunque con formula ambigua “Salvo i casi di urgente necessità, la forza pubblica non potrà entrare, per l’esercizio delle sue funzioni, negli edifici aperti al culto, senza averne dato previo avviso all’autorità ecclesiastica”). Le norme in materia cambiano molto da Stato a Stato e non sono mancate in questi anni polemiche a seguito di arresti di migranti in chiesa (in Germania, in Islanda).

    La Chiesa protestante in Olanda, nata dalla fusione di tre precedenti chiese, la riformata olandese, la riformata in Olanda e la evangelica luterana, rappresenta circa un terzo dei 6 milioni di abitanti dei Paesi Bassi.

    • To Protect Migrants From Police, a Dutch Church Service Never Ends

      Jessa van der Vaart and Rosaliene Israel, two Dutch pastors, usually get to church by cycling through the streets of Amsterdam to a Protestant parish in the city center. But last Wednesday night, they packed their robes into the trunk of a car and drove down the highway to The Hague for what was the equivalent of a priestly shift change.

      They would take over at 8 p.m. from a local minister at the modest Bethel Church. Then, at 11 p.m., they would be replaced by a group from the city of Voorburg, who were scheduled to pull an all-nighter, singing hymns and preaching until daylight, when another cleric would arrive to take the baton.

      The two pastors from Amsterdam were running slightly late. “Well,” said Ms. van der Vaart, as Ms. Israel started the engine. “They’ll have to keep going till we get there.”

      For the marathon church service, which started more than six weeks ago, and hasn’t stopped since, can never take a break.

      Under an obscure Dutch law, the police may not disrupt a church service to make an arrest. And so for the past six weeks, immigration officials have been unable to enter Bethel Church to seize the five members of the Tamrazyan family, Armenian refugees who fled to the sanctuary to escape a deportation order.

      The service, which began in late October as a little-noticed, last-gasp measure by a small group of local ministers, is now a national movement, attracting clergy members and congregants from villages and cities across the Netherlands. More than 550 pastors from about 20 denominations have rotated through Bethel Church, a nonstop service all in the name of protecting one vulnerable family.

      “It’s about practicing what we preach,” said Ms. van der Vaart, as she and Ms. Israel sped down the Netherlands’ A4 highway toward the church.

      At a moment when Christianity’s relevance in Europe is waning — and when xenophobia and nationalism are rising — the Bethel service has also been a reminder of the influence that religious institutions can still exert in a largely secular Western Europe. The pastors have given protection to the Tamrazyan family; the family has given them a cause to show the power of their faith.

      “We’re kind of struggling here as churches in the West, we’re more and more in the margins, and as church leaders we can kind of feel this,” said Ms. Israel, who is the secretary general of Protestant Church Amsterdam.

      “But with this,” she added, “we feel that what we’re doing is quite relevant.”

      In recent years, nationalists have used xenophobic messaging to win office in Italy, Hungary and Austria, and achieve prominence in Sweden, Germany, Britain, France and the Netherlands, underscoring the impression of a European continent that is turning inward. But as the two pastors reached the outskirts of The Hague, Ms. van der Vaart said the marathon at Bethel shows that another Europe still exists.

      “I often think we’re entering times with less and less solidarity,” said Ms. van der Vaart, the vicar at the Oude Kerk, the oldest church and building in Amsterdam. “But then this initiative is all about solidarity, and that gives me hope.”
      An Unassuming Hideaway

      If you weren’t looking for it, you might walk straight past Bethel Church, a red-brick building tucked away on a quiet side-street in The Hague. Inside is a wider complex, which includes accommodation for the Tamrazyan family, as well as various offices and meeting rooms. At first it seems sort of mundane.

      When Ms. van der Vaart and Ms. Israel arrived, with a few minutes to spare, there were no police officers waiting to pounce. The sheer fact of the ongoing service is enough to keep them away. The two pastors quickly donned their robes and hurried into the chapel. On the tiled wall behind the altar hung a migration-themed interpretation of the Madonna and child — a portrait of an African refugee and her baby, dressed as Mary and Jesus.

      In the pews sat roughly a dozen worshipers, some of whom had come before, some there for the first time. Most were believers, but one or two were not.

      “I’m not religious but when I heard about this, I said to my husband, ‘Don’t be shocked, but I want to go to church,’” said Florine Kuethe, a public relations consultant who later agreed to help the church deal with the heightening news media interest. “This type of thing makes the church relevant again.”

      Inside the chapel, the pastors began with a greeting, then a rousing Dutch hymn, then Psalm 82.

      “Rescue the weak and the needy,” read the translation of one line. “Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

      The three Tamrazyan children — Haryarpi, 21, Warduhi, 19, and Seyran, 15 — came in and out, frequently playing an active part in the service. Journalists, however, were only allowed in for brief sequences, a rule the pastors said was to ensure that the service retained its spiritual value, instead of becoming a media spectacle.

      “Sometimes I look back and ask why it has been as big as it has,” said Pastor Derk Stegeman, a spokesman for the family, and the service’s main organizer. “It’s because we protected our service and did not make it into an action for other things.”

      Where It All Began

      The story of the service started not in The Hague but in Katwijk, a large seaside town southwest of Amsterdam. The Tamrazyan family ended up there after the father was forced to flee Armenia for political reasons in 2010, Mr. Stegeman said. At the family’s request, their full predicament has been kept a secret, along with the names of the parents, to prevent repercussions for relatives still in Armenia.

      In a six-year legal process, Dutch officials twice tried to deny the family asylum, and were twice defeated in court. But the government finally got its way on its third attempt, even though the three children had all been in the country for more than five years and were theoretically eligible for an amnesty under legislation enacted in 2013.

      Lennart Wegewijs, a spokesman for the Dutch ministry of justice and security, said that the government could not comment on individual cases. But speaking generally, he said that under Dutch law, families can only qualify for amnesty if they, somewhat paradoxically, are willing to cooperate with official efforts to deport them from the country.

      To avoid what they believed to be certain danger back in Armenia, the Tamrazyans did not cooperate. Instead, they took refuge in a church in Katwijk. It was when that first church ran out of resources to help them that the leadership at Bethel agreed, after some deliberation, to welcome the family instead.

      As well as maintaining round-the-clock prayers, the church has provided psychological help for the family and teaching for the children, who can no longer go to school or university classes.

      To avoid compounding their stress, the family rarely gives interviews, and they made no exception for The New York Times.

      But on a blog that Haryarpi, the eldest child, started soon after entering the church, she has written about the relief of being granted shelter.

      “I often think the only place where I am safe is the church,” she wrote in Dutch on Nov. 4. “It really feels like a refuge.”

      The pastors have promised to continue the service indefinitely — even after a Dutch minister, Mark Harbers, said on Friday that the service hadn’t changed the government’s mind.

      Initially, the nonstop services were run by a core group of around a dozen pastors. Some of them pulled all-nighters on their own, including Mr. Stegeman and his wife. But a few days into the process, the Protestant Church in the Netherlands endorsed the service and used its newsletter to encourage other congregations to participate.

      Soon it became hard to fit all the volunteers into the schedule.

      “It’s amazing,” said Mr. Stegeman. “From all over our country people are coming, from the north to the very south, west and east.”

      Some preachers simply reuse services and sermons they gave at other churches. But others have used the opportunity to try something new, turning the church into a kind of greenhouse for liturgical experiments.

      Ms. Israel read from a modern reinterpretation of the biblical story of King David and his wife Bathsheba, told from Bathsheba’s perspective. One minister incorporated meditative song into her service, and another interspersed prayers and hymns with sermons from Martin Luther King Jr. During one all-nighter, Mr. Stegeman even brought along a harpist.

      “You see preachers from every background across the country, bringing their own way of celebrating and worshiping that is different hour by hour,” said Pauline Kuipers, who chairs the fund that owns the church. “It goes on continuously but it changes all the time.”

      By 11 p.m., the two pastors from Amsterdam were relieved by the group that had just arrived from Voorburg.

      After three hours of singing, preaching and praying, Ms. van der Vaart’s voice was now slightly hoarse, and Ms. Israel admitted to being “a little bit tired.”

      But she was also moved. As Ms. Israel left the chapel, Haryarpi told her that she had been inspired to write a poem about one of the psalms they had sung.

      “For me, that’s what it’s all about,” Ms. Israel said a few minutes later, packing her robes back into her cycling bag.

      “You could read that psalm a hundred times and not get touched by it,” she said. “But here, in this night, in Bethel Church, it’s very real.”

Though Tubbs didn’t mention them, the previous year, the Black Panthers came out with their famous 10-Point Program. And there it is in point number two: “We believe that the federal government is responsible and obligated to give every man employment or a guaranteed income.”

    Perhaps it’s not surprising that different black thinkers in the 1960s came to the conclusion that a guaranteed income would be an effective way to fight the poverty that resulted from structural racism. They’d just seen a generation of federal programs make white Americans much, much wealthier, while also seeing how those same policies discriminated against them. The big programs that were created during the New Deal were boxed in by what historian Ira Katznelson calls “the Southern cage.” In exchange for creating socialistic Federal programs, the then-Democrats of the south required policies that would reinforce the racial hierarchy of the country.

    Thanks to the sanitized images of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement that dominate our nation’s classrooms and our national discourse, many Americans imagine that protests organized by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and countless local organizations fighting for justice did not fall victim to violent outbreaks. That’s a myth. In spite of extensive training in nonviolent protest and civil disobedience, individuals and factions within the larger movement engaged in violent skirmishes, and many insisted on their right to physically defend themselves even while they proclaimed nonviolence as an ideal (examples include leaders of the SNCC and the Deacons for Defense and Justice in Mississippi).

    The reality — which is underdiscussed but essential to an understanding of our current situation — is that the civil rights work of Dr. King and other leaders was loudly opposed by overt racists and quietly sabotaged by cautious moderates. We believe that current moderates sincerely want to condemn racism and to see an end to its effects. The problem is that this desire is outweighed by the comfort of their current circumstances and a perception of themselves as above some of the messy implications of fighting for liberation. This is nothing new. In fact, Dr. King’s 1963 “Letter From Birmingham Jail” is as relevant today as it was then. He wrote in part:

    I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Councilor or the Ku Klux Klanner but the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods of direct action.”

    National polling from the 1960s shows that even during that celebrated “golden age” of nonviolent protest, most Americans were against marches and demonstrations. A 1961 Gallup poll revealed that 57 percent of the public thought that lunch counter sit-ins and other demonstrations would hurt integration efforts. A 1963 poll showed that 60 percent had an unfavorable feeling toward the planned March on Washington, where Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. A year later, 74 percent said that since black people had made some progress, they should stop their demonstrations; and by 1969, 74 percent said that marching, picketing and demonstrations were hurting the civil rights cause. As for Dr. King personally, the figure who current moderates most readily point to as a model, 50 percent of people polled in 1966 thought that he was hurting the civil rights movement; only 36 percent believed he was helping.

    The civil rights movement was messy, disorderly, confrontational and yes, sometimes violent. Those standing on the sidelines of the current racial-justice movement, waiting for a pristine or flawless exercise of righteous protest, will have a long wait. They, we suspect, will be this generation’s version of the millions who claim that they were one of the thousands who marched with Dr. King. Each of us should realize that what we do now is most likely what we would have done during those celebrated protests 50 years ago. Rather than critique from afar, come out of your homes, follow those who are closest to the pain, and help us to redeem this country, and yourselves, in the process.

Et aujourd’hui en 2017 les Démocrates n’ont gagné aucune des 4 élections spéciales destinées à élire les remplaçants des membres républicains du congrès qui ont rejoint l’administration de Trump.
    Comment en est-on arrivé là ? Personne dans le Parti démocrate ne va poser la question, mais peut être le devrait-on et c’est ce que fait le légendaire défenseur des consommateurs, trois fois candidat aux élections présidentielles, Ralph Nader.

    Nader, âgé maintenant de 83 ans et installé à Washington D.C depuis plus de 50 ans, a été aux premières loges de la lente chute des Démocrates. Après ses révélations explosives sur l’industrie automobile américaine dans son livre « Ces voitures qui tuent », lui et ses organisations ont collaboré avec les Démocrates du Congrès pour passer un kyrielle de lois visant à protéger l’environnement, les consommateurs et les lanceurs d’alerte. Le journaliste William Greider a dit de lui qu’il était l’un des trois plus grands modèles du militantisme démocratique, avec Saul Alinsky et Martin Luther King Jr. D’un autre côté, le « Memo Powell » de 1971, qui pose les bases d’une résurgence des droits des entreprises, le considère comme l’ennemi principal du « système » et l’appelle « l’unique opposant efficace au pouvoir des entreprises américaines ».


    Quoi qu’il en soit, Nader est bien évidemment devenu persona non grata dans le Parti démocrate depuis ses candidatures pour le Parti vert dans les années 2000. George W. Bush a officiellement battu Al Gore en Floride de 537 voix, avec les votes électoraux menant Bush à la Maison-Blanche bien que ce dernier n’ait pas gagné le vote populaire. En réalité, cependant, une étude approfondie, peu remarquée, publiée peu après le 11 Septembre a établi que Gore aurait gagné en Floride si tous les votes contestés avaient été recomptés.
    Les démocrates ont fustigé Nader, qui a obtenu 97 000 votes en Floride, pour avoir permis l’élection de Bush. Puisqu’ il est impossible de refaire l’histoire, il n’y a aucune manière de savoir si Gore aurait gagné sans la candidature de Nader. Certes il aurait pu gagner, mais il est possible aussi que, sans la menace Nader, qui a beaucoup poussé Gore à prendre des positions plus populaires, plus progressistes, le candidat démocrate aurait fait un score encore pire avec une élection où Nader n’aurait pas figuré.

    En tout cas, il est maintenant incontestable que le Parti démocrate a d’importants problèmes qui ne peuvent être imputés à ce qu’a fait Ralph Nader en 2000. Dans une interview récente, Nader, toujours très bien informé et riche d’une expérience de plusieurs dizaines d’années, donne son opinion sur la manière dont les États-Unis en sont arrivés là dans le domaine politique :

    JON SCHWARZ  : Je suis intéressé par l’histoire des Démocrates cédant à la pression, devenant de plus en plus désireux de faire tout ce que la droite veut, lors de ces 40 dernières années. Prenons les récentes histoires à propos de Jared Kushner. Quelle que soit l’ultime réalité ici, je pense qu’il est juste de dire que si un président démocrate avait désigné son gendre à un poste de grand pouvoir à la Maison-Blanche – si Hillary Clinton avait désigné Marc Mezvinsky le mari de Chelsea – et si les péripéties sur sa tentative de mettre en place des liens informels avec la Russie étaient sorties dans le Washington Post et le New York Times, il aurait été mis à la porte avant la fin de la journée.

    RALPH NADER  : Voulez-vous que je vous raconte l’histoire du déclin et de la décadence du Parti Démocrate ? Je vais vous donner les boulets que traîne le Parti Démocrate qui sont des événements marquants.
    Le premier grand événement fut en 1971. Tony Coelho, qui était un membre californien du Congrès, et qui s’occupait de la trésorerie de campagne des Démocrates, a convaincu les Démocrates qu’ils devraient solliciter l’argent des entreprises, et qu’ils pourraient grâce à des levées de fonds obtenir beaucoup d’argent. Pourquoi les laisser aux Républicains et simplement miser sur le socle des syndicats pour le financement, quand vous avez un énorme pot de miel dans le milieu des affaires ?

    Et ils l’ont fait. Et j’ai pu voir la différence presque immédiatement. Premièrement, ils ont perdu l’élection face à Reagan. Et ensuite ils ont commencé à devenir plus faibles au congrès. A ce moment, 1980, quelques-uns de nos plus grands alliés perdirent après la victoire écrasante de Reagan face à Carter, nous avions perdu le sénateur [Gaylord] Nelson, le sénateur [Warren] Magnuson, le sénateur [Frank] Church. Nous avions davantage de difficultés pour obtenir des audiences devant le Congrès à propos des malversations des sociétés par les dirigeants Démocrates [commission du congrès]. Quand les Démocrates regagnèrent la Maison-Blanche [en 1992] vous pouviez voir la différence dans les nominations pour les agences de réglementation, la difficulté pour leur faire améliorer la santé et les réglementations de sécurité.

    Le second boulet est le fait qu’ils ne savaient pas comment traiter avec Reagan. Et les Républicains en prirent note. Cela veut dire paroles douces, sourires… Vous pouvez dire des choses terribles et faire des choses terribles aussi longtemps que vous avez ce genre de présentation.

    [Les Démocrates] continuaient de penser que les conservateurs Républicains étaient ternes, stupides et sans humour. Ils ne s’étaient pas adaptés.

    RN  : De plus en plus ils commencèrent à juger leur opposition face aux Républicains à travers la quantité d’argent qu’ils levaient. Vous parliez à [Marcy] Kaptur de Cleveland, elle disait, nous allons au « caucus » démocrate à la Chambre des Représentants, nous y allons pour parler d’argent, nous continuons de parler d’argent, et nous allons sortir avec notre part d’argent…

    La conséquence est que cela a fait sortir les questions économiques de la table, celles-là qui ont permis aux Démocrates de gagner encore et encore dans les années 30 et 40. Les questions sur le travail, les questions sur le salaire minimum, la question de l’assurance maladie, les questions sur les pensions. Et ce fut bien sûr une grande aubaine pour le parti Républicain car le parti Républicain ne pouvait faire face sur la question économique. Ils faisaient face sur la question raciale, sur la question de l’intolérance, et c’est comme cela qu’ils ont commencé à prendre un contrôle sur le solide Sud démocrate après le vote des lois sur les droits civils.

    Lever de l’argent de Wall Street, des compagnies pharmaceutiques, des compagnies d’assurance santé, des sociétés énergétiques, éloignaient les Démocrates de leur principal avantage sur les Républicains, qui est, dans le langage de Roosevelt : « Le Parti Démocrate est le parti des familles de travailleurs, les Républicains sont le parti des riches ». Cela s’est complètement inversé et a laissé les Démocrates extrêmement vulnérables.

    Cela a eu pour conséquence de les faire reculer géographiquement, vers la côte est, la côte ouest et autres.

    Et ils ont créé un autre boulet : ils n’ont pas fait de campagne [présidentielle] dans les 50 États. Si vous ne faites pas campagne dans les 50 États, premièrement vous renforcez le parti adverse dans ces États que vous avez abandonnés, ils peuvent donc prendre ces États pour acquis et se concentrer sur les États qui sont dans la zone grise. C’était le raté numéro un.

    Le raté numéro deux est ce que Ben Barnes, le politicien averti au Texas, m’a dit. Il m’a dit, quand vous ne vous battez pas pour la présidentielle au Texas, cela pourrit tout le parti… jusqu’aux maires et conseils municipaux. Ainsi cela répète cette décadence et perte de pouvoir pour les années futures.

    Quand ils ont abandonné les États rouges, ils ont abandonné cinq États dans la zone de Rocky Mountain et ont commencé déjà avec un handicap de 9 ou 10 sénateurs.

    Vous devez vous souvenir de votre histoire, les deux sénateurs du Montana étaient Démocrates, le Sénateur Church de l’Idaho était un Démocrate, le Sénateur Frank Moss, grand défenseur des consommateurs, un Démocrate de l’Utah. Maintenant il n’y a presque plus personne. Les deux sénateurs du Wyoming sont Républicains, les deux sénateurs du Montana sont Républicains [John Tester,le sénateur principal du Montana, est un Démocrate], les deux sénateurs de l’Utah sont Républicains. Je pense que les Démocrates ont un siège au Colorado. Ensuite vous descendez en Arizona et c’est deux Républicains.

    Ainsi ils n’ont jamais été à l’abri d’un veto de l’opposition même à leur apogée au Sénat. Et bien sûr plus tard lorsqu’ils n’étaient pas à leur apogée cela leur coûté le Sénat encore et encore. Et maintenant ils sont dans un grand trou, avec la débâcle aux sénatoriales de 2016, ils font face à trois fois plus de Démocrates pour une réélection en 2018.
    Le [troisième] boulet est qu’ils ont décidé de faire campagne à la télévision, avec des consultants politiques les influençant et recevant leurs parts de 15-20 pour cent. Quand vous faites campagne à la télévision, avec des slogans, vous ne faites pas campagne sur de la politique.

    Le boulet suivant, les syndicats ont commencé à devenir faibles, faibles en nombre et faibles en leadership. Ils ont commencé à verser beaucoup d’argent aux Démocrates pour la télévision. Et en même temps qu’ils s’affaiblissaient ils perdirent leur capacité de mobilisation populaire au nom des Démocrates.

    Les Démocrates avaient initié le procédé où le message précède la politique. Non – la politique précède le message. Cela signifie qu’ils continuent de dire à quel point les Républicains sont mauvais. Ils ont fait campagne non pas en disant, regardez comme nous sommes bons, nous allons vous apporter l’assistance médicale [à tous], nous allons sévir face aux crimes des sociétés contre les travailleurs et les consommateurs et l’environnement, volant, mentant, vous trompant. Nous allons vous donner un salaire minimum. Nous allons avoir une défense moins importante, une meilleure défense, et investir un peu de cet argent et commencer à reconstruire vos écoles et ponts et systèmes d’eau et d’assainissement, et librairies, et cliniques.

    Au lieu de dire cela, ils ont fait campagne en disant « Pouvez-vous croire à quel point les Républicains sont mauvais ? » Un fois cela dit, ils ont piégé leur aile progressiste, car leur aile progressiste est le seul segment qui peut changer le parti en un formidable opposant. Car ils ont dit à leur aile progressiste : « vous n’avez nulle part où aller, fichez-nous la paix ».

    Et cela nous amène aux boucs émissaires de ces 20 dernières années. « Oh, c’est Nader, oh, c’est les frères Koch, oh, c’est le collège électoral, oh, c’est de la misogynie, oh, ce sont les lamentables rednecks ». Ils ne se sont jamais regardés dans la glace.

    RN  : Les Républicains, quand ils perdent, ils se battent sur les idées, aussi terrifiantes soit-elles. Les idées du Tea Party, les idées libertaires, les mornes idées républicaines. Ils se battent. Mais les Démocrates veulent de l’uniformité, ils veulent faire taire les gens. Ainsi ils ont la transition la plus défectueuse de toutes. Ils ont la transition de Nancy Pelosi à Nancy Pelosi, quatre fois perdante face au pire Parti Républicain de l’histoire du Parti Républicain.

    Si vous mettiez aujourd’hui des politiques Républicains d’avant le fantôme de Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, et « Mr Conservateur » le sénateur Robert Taft, ils se retourneraient dans leurs tombes. C’est la forme radicalement extrémiste, cruelle, vicieuse, Wall Street, militariste du parti républicain. Cela aurait signifié que les Démocrates les auraient écrasés. Ils ne les auraient pas juste battus, ils les auraient écrasés dans le corps législatif dans tout le pays, les gouverneurs, le Président et le congrès.
    Mais non, ce sont toujours les boucs émissaires. Peut-être que Jill Stein, le petit Parti Vert, ont pris la Pennsylvanie et le Michigan au faucon Hillary.

    JS  : Les Démocrates semblent avoir assimilé les vues des Républicains sur tout ce qui concerne l’armée.

    RN  : [Un autre] boulet est qu’ils ne se sont jamais différenciés des Républicains sur la politique militaire étrangère – car ils étaient comme eux. Ils n’ont jamais remis en question le budget de l’armée, ils n’ont jamais remis en question la politique étrangère militarisée, comme le faucon Hillary sur la Libye, qui fit peur aux généraux et fuir [le secrétaire à la défense Robert] Gates qui s’était opposé à ce qu’elle aille à la Maison-Blanche pour [prôner] le renversement du régime, métastasant la violence dans sept ou huit pays africains à ce jour.
    Ainsi ils ont abandonné la politique étrangère et militaire, car ils recevaient de l’argent de Lockheed et Boeing et General Dynamics et Raytheon et d’autres. Même Elizabeth Warren quand elle a eu sa chance commença en discutant du maintien de ces contrats avec Raytheon. Voilà l’aile gauche du parti discutant avec la société Raytheon, qui est le plus grand gâchis de subvention à l’est du Pécos.

    [Un autre] boulet est : personne n’a été viré. Ils enchaînent défaite après défaite, et ne peuvent pas remplacer leurs compères par de nouvelles personnes, vigoureuses, énergiques. Même chose pour les syndicats. Ils [gardent leurs positions] des années 80 peu importe à quel point le syndicat est décalé de la réalité. Vous n’êtes pas viré quelle que soit l’envergure de la perte, à l’inverse du milieu des affaires, où vous vous faites virer.

    Le dernier boulet est qu’ils prennent leurs précautions en harcelant les tierces partis progressistes afin que ces tierces partis ne les dépassent pas. Je suis un expert dans ce domaine. Ils ont essayé de les faire disparaître du vote. Nous avions eu 24 poursuites judiciaires en 12 semaines durant l’été 2004 par le Parti démocrate pour nous faire disparaître du vote dans des dizaines d’États. Même si nous n’avions que 5 pour cent, 6 pour cent de votes, ils subiraient une forte pression pour changer de direction et changer leurs pratiques car il y aurait assez d’électeurs américains pour dire aux Démocrates, « nous avons un autre endroit où aller », un troisième parti viable. Ils les harcèlent, violent les libertés civiles, ils utilisent leurs juges Démocrates désignés pour rendre de mauvais jugements ou les harceler de dépositions. Avant que [les troisièmes partis] soient liquidés, c’est de toute façon la Fête du travail et ils ont une campagne de huit semaines.

    Il y a certaines personnes qui pensent que le Parti démocrate peut être réformé de l’intérieur sans changer le personnel. Je leur dis bonne chance. Que s’est-il passé ces 20 dernières années ? Ils se sont retranchés davantage. Débarrassez-vous de Pelosi, vous avez Steny Hoyer. Débarrassez-vous d’Harry Reid, vous avez [Charles] Schumer. Bonne chance.

    Malheureusement, en résumé, les Démocrates sont incapables de défendre les États-Unis d’Amérique du [Parti Républicain] le plus vicieux, ignorant, soumis aux entreprises, militariste, anti-syndical, contre les intérêts du consommateur, anti-environnement, contre la postérité, de l’histoire.

    Reigniting The Activist Tradition

    The tradition of activism among America’s artistic and cultural leaders goes back to the early days of social justice movements. In 1939, Marion Anderson staged a defiant outdoor concert at the Lincoln Memorial, having been barred from Constitution Hall on account of her race. Paul Robeson, one of America’s most prominent African American actors in the 40’s, spoke openly for equality and encouraged his peers to do the same. “The artist must elect to fight for freedom or for slavery” he said, “I have made my choice.” The 1960’s ushered in a wave of artist-activists, from Joan Baez to Harry Belafonte to Bob Dylan. In the 1970’s there was Marvin Gaye to Bob Marley, whose politically charged work added cultural resonance to the words and actions of Martin Luther King Jr. and other social justice leaders. More recently in the 1980’s, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie along with dozens of other artists staged “We Are the World,” conceived by Harry Belafonte, which delivered powerful testament to the power of artists to drive attention, resources, and action towards the world’s injustices. Artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Dixie Chicks, Alicia Keys, Public Enemy and Macklemore have carried this same spirit of progressive change into the present day.

    In 1968 Schulz noticed the Civil Rights movement, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and read a letter from Los Angeles schoolteacher Harriet Glickman. She had a question for Schulz: would he include a black child in the Peanuts gang?

    Chappelle’s comedy found fans in many worlds. At a recent barbecue in Philadelphia, a friend of the host dutifully but disinterestedly interrogated me about my life, and got excited only when my mother let it slip that I was working on a piece about Dave Chappelle. “Aw, man. I miss that guy,” he said. “He was my friend. I really felt like he was my friend.” I hear this a lot, usually from white people, and usually from white people without many black friends—like this seventy-year-old comparative literature professor in Birkenstocks. Part of what made the show so ingenious was that Chappelle’s racial invective found friends in strange places. With a regularly broadcasted television show, Chappelle was finally able to display what writer and activist Kevin Powell described in an Esquire profile as a “unique capacity to stand out and blend in, to cross boundaries and set up roadblocks.” Almost overnight, Chappelle became America’s black friend. He was a polyglot. He told Powell that, growing up, he used to “hang out with the Jewish kids, black kids, and Vietnamese immigrants,” and it was apparent that Chappelle had used these experiences to become America’s consul and translator for all things racial.

    • Chappelle did such a good job of truth-telling, on every subject, that nobody knew what to do when he just stopped talking. In no way did his quitting conform to our understanding of the comic’s one obligation: to be funny. To talk to us. To entertain us. To make us laugh. We aren’t used to taking no for an answer, to being rejected, especially not by the people who are supposed to make us smile. Especially not by black men who are supposed to make us smile. And yet Chappelle did just that. And so, like everyone, I wondered what had happened. What had happened, and, more so, what had brought Chappelle to—and kept him in—Yellow Springs?At a stand-up appearance in Sacramento in 2004, a frustrated Chappelle lashed out at his hecklers from the stage, yelling, “You people are stupid!” So what was it about this small college town—where hippies slipped me bags of Girl Scout cookies, where Tibetan jewelry stores and fair-trade coffee shops dotted the main street, and where kindly white ladies crossed the street to tell me my wild hair was giving them life—that made it more satisfying than celebrity or fame?

    • Seon was born in Washington, DC. Her father was a fair-skinned man who was adopted by a black woman. Although he self-identified as black, by all accounts he looked Greek. He was also blind. On the day Martin Luther King Jr. was shot, Chappelle’s grandfather was on a city bus and overheard rumblings of a beat-down about to happen to a white fellow on his bus. That guy’s gonna be in trouble, he thought. He did not realize that he was the white man being threatened. This anecdote about his grandfather would inspire Chappelle’s “Clayton Bigsby” sketch—the unforgettable short mockumentary about a blind white supremacist who does not know he is black.

      Although the city of Dayton is small and has been hit hard by the decline of industry, in Xenia and Yellow Springs the land is green, fecund, and alive, even in the relentless heat of summer. Xenia is three miles from where the first private black college, Wilberforce, opened, in 1856, to meet the educational needs of the growing population of freed blacks that crossed the Ohio River. Yellow Springs, a stop on the Underground Railroad, was initially established as a utopian community in 1825. In 1852, Horace Mann founded Antioch College and served as its president. During the ’50s and ’60s, Antioch and Yellow Springs were hamlets of anti-McCarthyism and antiwar and civil rights activism. Today there are a lot of hippies and there’s even more tie-dye. Between the villages, you can drive over rolling hills and pastures and not see another car for miles, and only far off on the horizon will you be able to spot a farmhouse.

      I spent a week in this part of Ohio, and during my stay I was invited to do all sorts of things with people of all kinds—rich and poor, white and black. I was invited to go flying, dig for worms at midnight, and plant raspberry bushes. My request to drive a tractor was turned down, not because I don’t know how to drive but because the tractor had been put away. In Ohio, there is space for people to do what they want. There is a lot of land, plenty of it. This is where enslaved people ran to, certain that they had finally evaded capture. This is where America’s first prominent black poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, wrote “We Wear the Mask.” And somewhere in the midst of it all is Dave Chappelle’s home.

    This sounds familiar. In the 60s, COINTELPRO, short for Counterintelligence Program, was an FBI program for domestic surveillance that spied on the Black Panthers. Even the FBI itself now admits that the program was overreaching, violating the First Amendment and other rights. The FBI also kept files on black leaders including Martin Luther King Jr.

    The threats to black privacy are why Matthew Mitchell organizes Harlem Cryptoparty. In his past life, Mitchell was a data journalist at the New York Times and, before that, a developer at CNN. Nowadays he works with journalists, activists, and specifically people in his community of Harlem, on issues surrounding digital security, privacy, and surveillance.
