    • Ethiopian-Israelis Protest for 3rd Day After Fatal Police Shooting

Ethiopian-Israelis and their supporters took to the streets across the country on Wednesday for a third day of protests in an outpouring of rage after an off-duty police officer fatally shot a black youth, and the Israeli police turned out in force to try to keep the main roads open.

The mostly young demonstrators have blocked major roads and junctions, paralyzing traffic during the evening rush hour, with disturbances extending into the night, protesting what community activists describe as deeply ingrained racism and discrimination in Israeli society.

Scores have been injured — among them many police officers, according to the emergency services — and dozens of protesters have been detained, most of them briefly. Israeli leaders called for calm; fewer protesters turned out on Wednesday.

“We must stop, I repeat, stop and think together how we go on from here,” President Reuven Rivlin said on Wednesday. “None of us have blood that is thicker than anyone else’s, and the lives of our brothers and sisters will never be forfeit.”

On Tuesday night, rioters threw stones and firebombs at the police and overturned and set fire to cars in chaotic scenes rarely witnessed in the center of Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities.

After initially holding back, the police fired stun grenades, tear gas and hard sponge bullets and sent in officers on horseback, prompting demonstrators to accuse them of the kind of police brutality that they had turned out to protest in the first place.

The man who was killed, Solomon Tekah, 18, arrived from Ethiopia with his family seven years ago. On Sunday night, he was with friends in the northern port city of Haifa, outside a youth center he attended. An altercation broke out, and a police officer, who was out with his wife and children, intervened.

The officer said that the youths had thrown stones that struck him and that he believed that he was in a life-threatening situation. He drew his gun and said he fired toward the ground, according to Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman.

Mr. Tekah’s friends said that they were just trying to get away after the officer began harassing them. Whether the bullet ricocheted or was fired directly at Mr. Tekah, it hit him in the chest, killing him.

“He was one of the favorites,” said Avshalom Zohar-Sal, 22, a youth leader at the center, Beit Yatziv, which offers educational enrichment and tries to keep underprivileged youth out of trouble. Mr. Zohar-Sal, who was not there at the time of the shooting, said that another youth leader had tried to resuscitate Mr. Tekah.

The police officer who shot Mr. Tekah is under investigation by the Justice Ministry. His rapid release to house arrest has further inflamed passions around what Mr. Tekah’s supporters call his murder.

In a televised statement on Tuesday as violence raged, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that all Israel embraced the family of the dead youth and the Ethiopian community in general. But he added: “We are a nation of law; we will not tolerate the blocking of roads. I ask you, let us solve the problems together while upholding the law.”

Many other Israelis said that while they were sympathetic to the Ethiopian-Israelis’ cause — especially after the death of Mr. Tekah — the protesters had “lost them” because of the ensuing violence and vandalism.

Reflecting a gulf of disaffection, Ethiopian-Israeli activists said that they believed that the rest of Israeli society had never really supported them.

“When were they with us? When?” asked Eyal Gato, 33, an Ethiopian-born activist who came to Israel in 1991 in the airlift known as Operation Solomon, which brought 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel within 36 hours.

The airlift was a cause of national celebration at the time, and many of the immigrants bent down to kiss the tarmac. But integration has since proved difficult for many, with rates of truancy, suicide, divorce and domestic violence higher than in the rest of Israeli society.

Mr. Gato, a postgraduate student of sociology who works for an immigrant organization called Olim Beyahad, noted that the largely poor Ethiopian-Israeli community of about 150,000, which is less than 2 percent of the population, had little electoral or economic clout.

He compared their situation to African-Americans in Chicago or Ferguson, Mo., but said that the Israeli iteration of “Black Lives Matter” had no organized movement behind it, and that the current protests had been spontaneous.

Recalling his own experiences — such as being pulled over by the police a couple of years ago when he was driving a Toyota from work in a well-to-do part of Rehovot, in central Israel, and being asked what he was doing there in that car — Mr. Gato said he had to carry his identity card with him at all times “to prove I’m not a criminal.”

The last Ethiopian protests broke out in 2015, after a soldier of Ethiopian descent was beaten by two Israeli police officers as he headed home in uniform in a seemingly unprovoked assault that was caught on video. At the time, Mr. Gato said, 40 percent of the inmates of Israel’s main youth detention center had an Ethiopian background. Since 1997, he said, a dozen young Ethiopian-Israelis have died in encounters with the police.

A government committee set up after that episode to stamp out racism against Ethiopian-Israelis acknowledged the existence of institutional racism in areas such as employment, military enlistment and the police, and recommended that officers wear body cameras.

“Ethiopians are seen as having brought their values of modesty and humility with them,” Mr. Gato said. “They expect us to continue to be nice and to demonstrate quietly.”

But the second generation of the Ethiopian immigration has proved less passive than their parents, who were grateful for being brought to Israel.

The grievances go back at least to the mid-1990s. Then, Ethiopian immigrants exploded in rage when reports emerged that Israel was secretly dumping the blood they donated for fear that it was contaminated with H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

“The community is frustrated and in pain,” said one protester, Rachel Malada, 23, from Rehovot, who was born in Gondar Province in Ethiopia and who was brought to Israel at the age of 2 months.

“This takes us out to the streets, because we must act up,” she said. “Our parents cannot do this, but we must.”

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian on Tuesday morning after the 37-year-old carried out a shooting attack at the entrance of the illegal Israeli settlement of Har Hadar in the occupied West Bank, killing two security guards and a border police officer.

According to Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld, the attack was carried out by a Palestinian from the village of Beit Surik in the West Bank’s Jerusalem district, later identified as Nimr Mahmoud Ahmed Jamal.

Luba al-Samri, the Arabic spokesperson for the Israeli police, added that Jamal had arrived at the settlement along with a group of Palestinian workers. When Palestinians began entering the Israeli checkpoint at the entrance of the settlement, Israeli police forces asked him to stop after becoming suspicious of the Palestinian, who then exposed a gun and shot at the officers.

After an exchange of fire, Jamal was shot dead, while three of the officers were killed. Another Israeli, the security coordinator of the settlement, was also seriously injured at the time. Rosenfeld confirmed that the slain Palestinian was a holder of an Israeli work permit.

Al-Samri noted that the Israeli officer killed was 20-year-old Soloman Gabariya. Israeli police closed off the area near the settlement following the attack. Israeli daily Harretz identified the two security guards as as Yussef Utman, a resident of Abu Gosh village near Jerusalem, and Or Arish, 25, from Har Adar.

According to Ma’an documentation, Jamal became the 56th Palestinian to have been killed by Israelis since the beginning of the year during attacks, alleged attacks, in clashes, or during deadly detention raids.

Since the beginning of 2017, 16 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians, almost all of whom were uniformed Israeli officers or Israelis living on Israeli settlements in violation of international law.(...)

      AFP / 26 septembre 2017 11h23
      https://www.romandie.com/news/ZOOM-Un-Palestinien-tue-trois-Israeliens-pres-d-une-colonie-de-Cisjordanie/836570.rom

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Three Palestinian citizens of Israel and two police officers — also Palestinian citizens of Israel — were killed during an armed confrontation in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem early on Friday morning.

According to Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, three Palestinians carried out a shooting attack at the Lions’ Gate entrance to the Old City at around 7:00 a.m. on Friday, critically injuring two Israeli police officers, who were taken to hospitals for treatment, and lightly injuring another.

Israeli forces then heavily opened fire towards the Palestinians as they headed inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, injuring the three, who were left on the ground bleeding while medics were reportedly prevented from approaching them, witnesses told Ma’an.

Witnesses told Ma’an that the Palestinians entered Lions’ Gate on a motorcycle and shot at the police officers at point-blank range, before heading inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound through the Gate of Remission — known in Arabic as Bab al-Huttah — where Israeli forces shot them at close range.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri later identified the shooters as Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Jabarin , 29; Muhammad Hamid Abd al-Latif Jabarin , 19; and Muhammad Ahmad Mufdal Jabarin , 19 — all Palestinian citizens of Israel from the Palestinian-majority town of Umm al-Fahm. Al-Samri added that none of the three men had previously had a “security” record.

Rosenfeld reported early on Friday afternoon that the two critically injured officers had succumbed to their wounds while in the hospital, identifying them as Hail Stawi, 30, and Kamil Shakib Shinan, 22 — two Druze citizens of Israel from the villages of Maghar and Horfish respectively.(...)

  • 3 Palestinians dead, 1 injured as Israeli officer killed in Jerusalem stabbing

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli police reported on Friday evening that an attack took place outside the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem, saying that one Israeli police officer was critically injured and later succumbed to her wounds, while the three attackers — who police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld referred to as “Arab terrorists” — were shot dead.

Israeli news daily Haaretz reported all three Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli police at the scene. Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said that the Israeli police officer, a 23-year old woman named Hadas Malka, succumbed to her wounds after being stabbed by one of the attackers, while a number of others were injured in the attack.

According to Rosenfeld, the attackers used knives and an automatic weapon. Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the three Palestinians had carried out simultaneous stabbing and shooting attacks in two different areas near Damascus Gate.

Al-Samri said two of the Palestinians, aged 18 and 19, were from the Ramallah-area villages of Deir Abu Mashal and Shuqba in the central occupied West Bank, and the third was a 30-year-old resident of the southern West Bank city of Hebron. However, reports later emerged that the three Palestinian attackers were all from the village of Deir Abu Mashal in Ramallah, while the Palestinian from Hebron was a bystander who was injured during the incident and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Rosenfeld reported that following the attack, police units implemented heightened security measures in the area — which had already seen an increased police presence earlier in the day for the third Friday of the holy month of Ramadan, as thousands of Palestinians from across Israel and the occupied West Bank travelled to Jerusalem to perform prayers at Al-Aqsa mosque.

(...) Israeli forces put Ramallah-area village under lockdown and prepare for punitive demolitions

Shortly after the attack on Friday night, Israeli forces surrounded Deir Abu Mashal village, northwest of Ramallah city, where the three Palestinian attackers originated, according to Palestinian sources.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain attackers as Adel Hasan Ahmad Ankoush ,18, Baraa Ibrahim Salih Taha , 18, and Osama Ahmad Dahdouh , 19.

Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces set up military checkpoints in the village and prevented residents from leaving or entering the area.

The mayor of Deir Abu Mashal Imad Zahran told Ma’an on Saturday that Israeli forces raided the homes of the three Palestinian youths and took measurements, while Israeli soldiers informed the families that their homes would be demolished soon — an Israeli policy used against family members of Palestinian attacks, which rights groups have deemed a form of “collective punishment.”

Israeli news daily Haaretz reported that Israel would also revoke Israeli permits for the extended families of the Palestinian attackers.

Zahran confirmed that “fierce clashes” broke out in the village during the raid, adding that two Palestinians were shot with live ammunition in the legs and another Palestinian was struck with a live bullet. Dozens of Palestinians, he added, suffered from tear gas inhalation during the clashes.

Palestinians injured and detained following the attack

As reports continue emerge regarding the deadly attack, Palestinians told Ma’an that a number of bystanders were injured and detained by Israeli forces following the attack.

Several Palestinians were injured by shrapnel from bullets shot by Israeli forces, who witnesses said shot “haphazardly” in every direction during the attack. Among the injured was a young man from Jerusalem who was shot in the spine and kidney, according to witnesses.

The Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service told Ma’an that its teams had treated one person who was injured by shrapnel in the foot and three others who suffered from tear gas inhalation after Israeli forces fired tear gas into the crowds.

Meanwhile, witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli forces and police officers had detained at least six young men following the incident and “assaulted” Palestinian bystanders.

Israeli forces had detained three Palestinian bystanders near Herod’s Gate in the Old City after allegedly assaulting them, according to witnesses. Israeli forces also fired stun grenades to disperse bystanders and passersby who were exiting through the gate after finishing prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Three other Palestinian bystanders were detained in Musrara neighborhood and on Nablus street in East Jerusalem where Israeli forces had also fired stun grenades at Palestinians in the area.

Meanwhile, all shop owners in Musrara and Sultan Solomon streets near the site of the attack were forced to close their shops following the incident.

According to witnesses, Israeli forces also stormed the al-Maqasid hospital at the Mount of Olives reportedly in search of a young Palestinian man who was shot in the Damascus Gate area. Witnesses added that Israeli forces were deployed outside the hospital and were inspecting vehicles.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian citizen of Israel was shot dead by Israeli police during clashes in the Palestinian-majority town of Kafr Qasim in central Israel on Monday night.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement on Tuesday morning that clashes erupted shortly before midnight when police detained a local man who was “wanted for questioning.”

Local youth threw stones at the police officers during the detention, and a “suspect” was also detained.

According to local news outlet Arab48, police officers fired tear gas, stun grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets at the crowd, which it said had gathered to denounce police failure to properly handle the high level of crime in Kafr Qasim.

Clashes continued into the night outside of the local police station, Rosenfeld said, adding that “as a result of a life-threatening situation,” a private security guard fired towards the protesters. Official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that at least two Palestinian citizens of Israel were injured during by gunshots.

One of the men — whom Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri identified as 21-year-old Muhammad Taha — was evacuated in critical condition to the Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikva, where doctors later declared him dead.

Rosenfeld also reported that Kafr Qasim protesters set fire to three police vehicles, while Israeli news outlet the Jerusalem Post reported that a police officer was “slightly wounded.”

Taha’s funeral is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, while the High Follow-up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel called for a general strike in all Palestinian-majority municipalities in Israel that same day.

Israeli police officers shot and killed, on Monday evening, a young Palestinian man in Kafr Qassem, east of Tel Aviv, after the police invaded the town, and resorted to excessive use of force against the residents, amidst accusations that the police are not providing security to the Arab citizens of the country facing increasing levels of organized crime, and violence.

The Arabs48 news website has reported that the slain Palestinian, Mohammad Taha , 27, was shot by the police with three live rounds in the head, from a close range, without posing any threat to them, and died from his wounds at the Beilinson Israeli medical center.

After shooting the young man, the police imposed curfew and abducted dozens of residents, before moving them to detention and interrogation centers.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A 16-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli border police at Israel’s “Container checkpoint” northeast of Bethlehem in the southern occupied West Bank on Monday, after the teen allegedly attempted to stab Israeli forces stationed at the checkpoint.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that a Palestinian attempted to stab Israeli border police at the checkpoint, at which time forces “responded to the threat” and shot the boy.

Rosenfeld did not immediately confirm that the Palestinian was killed, though eyewitnesses told Ma’an that the boy was dead. Israeli news website Ynet also reported that the Palestinian had been killed.

Rosenfeld added that no Israeli forces were injured in the alleged attack.

Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samari identified the alleged attacker, who she said was “neutralized,” as a 16-year-old from Bethlehem.

According to al-Samri, the boy approached Israeli forces holding a knife in his hand, and “after a short dispute, an Israeli soldier was able to open fire at the suspect who was neutralized and the knife in his possession was seized.”

A spokesperson from the Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma’an that Israeli forces prevented the service’s ambulances from reaching the boy, who witnesses say was covered with a blanket by Israeli forces.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli police forces shot and killed a teenaged Palestinian girl in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem early on Sunday evening after she allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said that the teenager was shot after she approached Israeli police officers stationed at the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City while holding a knife.

Al-Samri later confirmed that she had been killed, identifying her as a 16-year-old Palestinian from the Ramallah district of the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the girl as Fatima Afif Abd al-Rahman Hjeiji , 16, from the Ramallah-area village of Qarawat Bani Zeid.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a statement that no police officers had been injured in the alleged attack, adding that Israeli police had cordoned off the area and were investigating the incident.

According to Ma’an documentation, Hjeiji is the 20th Palestinian to have been killed by Israelis since the beginning of the year, seven of whom were minors. Seven Israelis have been killed by Palestinians during the same time period.

Though Israeli forces often claimed that Palestinians were allegedly attempting to carry out stabbing attacks when they were shot and killed, Palestinians and rights groups have disputed Israel’s version of events in a number of cases.

(...) According to PCHR’s investigations and testimonies by eyewitnesses to PCHR’s fieldworker in occupied Jerusalem, at approximately 19:00 on the abovementioned day, Fatmah ‘Afif ‘Abdel Rahman Hjeiji (16), from Qarawet Bani Zaid village, northwest of Ramallah, was walking 10 meters away from a police checkpoint, which is permanently established at the southern entrance to the Damascus Gate. One of the soldiers suddenly screamed out, “knife”. Immediately, the Israeli soldiers stationed there opened fire at the girl. As a result, 30 live bullets hit her body; some of them penetrated her chest and waist from the right side. Therefore, Fatmah was killed on the spot. Eyewitnesses emphasized that after the girl fell on the ground, the Israeli soldiers continued shooting at her and not only attempting to wound or arrest her.

Following this, the Israeli police deployed in the area closed the scene and prevented anyone from approaching the girl, whose body had been on the ground for an hour. The police officers attacked and pushed dozens of civilians away. They chased Mahmoud Abu Sbeih (9) until he fell from height in the Damascus Gate area and was then taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment. (...)

    • B’Tselem denounces Israel for unjustified killing of Palestinian teen in Jerusalem

      http://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=776971

B’Tselem noted that Israel’s Jerusalem District Police Commander Major General Yoram Halevy defended the shooting as lawful and appropriate. Israeli police spokespersons at the time said the officers had acted “determinedly and professionally” when they killed the teenager.

“The District Commander’s statement completely ignores the facts of the case: Hjeiji’s youth, the fact that she stood motionless, the short distance between her and the officers, the metal barrier separating her from the officers, and the obvious conclusion — that the officers shot and killed her when she posed no threat to them,” B’Tselem wrote.

“This statement, like similar sentiments expressed by other senior ranking officials and a mood of general hostility ever since October 2015, encourages security personnel to shoot to kill even in cases such as this, where lethal measures are unwarranted,” the human rights organization argued.

“This is no isolated incident,” B’Tselem affirmed, echoing numerous the numerous cases in which Israeli forces have been condemned for carrying out a “shoot-to-kill” policy of Palestinians who could have easily been disarmed and detained without being shot to death by Israeli forces.

An Israeli settler was shot and killed earlier this month at a military checkpoint, who Israeli police initially mistook for a Palestinian. About a month ago, almost at the very spot where Hjeiji was killed, and under similar circumstances, Israeli forces shot and killed 49-year-old Siham Nimr, who allegedly brandished a pair of scissors at them from the other side of the police barricade.

“The continued policy of fatally shooting Palestinians who do not pose a mortal danger illustrates the manifest discrepancy between the recognized and accepted principle that prohibits such use of gunfire, and a reality in which shoot-to-kill incidents are a frequent occurrence and are encouraged by senior officials and wide public support,” B’Tselem concluded in their report.

The terrorist who murdered a policeman in the south was a teacher in a school where six teachers have been arrested for their ISIS ideology.

    — Micky Rosenfeld (@MickyRosenfeld) January 18, 2017

(...) Abu al-Qian’s autopsy report was also released on Friday, detailing that the teacher had been killed by two bullets that were fired at his vehicle, the first of which struck him on his right knee, and the second in a main artery in the chest area, before he was left to bleed to death.

Israeli Channel 10 reported that Abu al-Qian’s knee injury led to the acceleration of his vehicle after his leg pressed against the gas pedal, and added that he had lost large amounts of blood which would have made it impossible to save him.

Nevertheless, they reported that he had been left to bleed for a half and hour as ambulances were prevented from providing him first aid.

Witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli police pulled an injured Abu al-Qian from his vehicle at the time and shot him another time to confirm his death. However, this testimony contradicts the autopsy report that stated he had bled to death.

Meanwhile, the family of Abu al-Qian have continued to refuse conditions set by Israeli police in order to receive the slain body of Abu al-Qian.(...)

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The funeral of Yaqoub Abu al-Qian , a Palestinian citizen of Israel and local math teacher from the unrecognized Bedouin community of Umm al-Hiran, began early on Tuesday afternoon, after the Israeli Supreme Court ordered that Israeli police return his body to his family a day earlier.

Abu al-Qian was shot and killed by Israeli police last week under widely contested circumstances during the violent demolition raid in Umm al-Hiran that left more than a dozen Palestinian structures razed to the ground.

While numerous eyewitnesses have insisted Abu al-Qian was posing no threat to anyone when Israeli police opened fire at his vehicle, causing him to lose control of the car and ram into officers, Israeli authorities have claimed the local math teacher was carrying out a deliberate terrorist attack in the incident that left one policeman killed.

MK Ayman Odeh, shot and injured in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet fired by Israeli police

NEGEV (Ma’an) — Two people were killed and several others were hospitalized Wednesday after a predawn demolition raid into the Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran in the Negev region erupted into clashes, as Israeli forces used rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas canisters, and stun grenades to violently suppress locals and supporters who had gathered to resist the demolitions.

A Palestinian citizen of Israel was shot dead by Israeli forces after he allegedly carried out a car ramming attack on Israeli officers, leaving several injured, according to Israeli police. However, a numerous eyewitness accounts said that the driver lost control of his vehicle after he was shot, causing him to crash into Israeli police, one of whom was killed.

Israeli Knesset member Taleb Abu Arar said that the police killed Abu Qian “in cold blood," Israeli news site Ynet quoted him as saying. “The police shot him for no reason. The claims that he tried to run over police are not true.”

Locals identified the slain Palestinian citizen of Israel as 47-year-old Yaqoub Moussa Abu al-Qian , a math teacher at al-Salam High School in the nearby town of Hura.

Israeli police later confirmed that a policeman succumbed to injuries he sustained by being hit by the car. The slain officer was identified as 34-year-old Erez Levi.

Knesset member Ayman Odeh and head of the Joint List, which represents parties led by Palestinian citizens of Israel, was injured in the head and back with rubber-coated steel bullets, locals said, and taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.

Odeh wrote in a statement on his Facebook page saying that “a crime was committed in Umm al-Hiran as hundreds of police members violently raided the village firing tear-gas bombs, stun grenades, and rubber-coated steel bullets. Villagers, women, men, and children stood with their bare hands against the brutality and violence of the police.”

Hundreds of Israeli police arrived to Umm al-Hiran at around 5 a.m. to secure the area for Israeli authorities to carry out a demolition campaign in the village.

Israeli news blog 972 Magazine quoted witness and activist Kobi Snitz as saying that police began pulling drivers out of vehicles, and attacking and threatening others.

A short while later, Snitz said he heard gunfire and saw a white pickup truck about 30 meters from police, telling 972: “They started shooting at the car in bursts from all directions.”

According to the report, it was only after the driver appeared to have been wounded and lost control of his vehicle that it crashed into the police officers, contradiction Israeli police reports.

(...) At around noon, renewed clashes erupted as Israeli bulldozers began razing the homes to the ground.

Residents crowded and hurled stones at Israeli police officers who showered the demonstrators with tear gas to disperse them.

Palestinian MK Osama Saadi was lightly injured in the leg and was taken to Soroka hospital in Beersheva for treatment, according to Israeli news website Walla.

In addition, Israeli police officers denied a number of Palestinian Knesset members entry into the village. Among them were MK Ahmad Tibi and Hanin Zoubi. Israeli police prevented hundreds of vehicles from entering the village as residents were seen evacuating belongings from their homes ahead of the demolitions.

Palestinian MK Jamal Zahalqa urged the Israeli government to pull out police and avoid using force. A solution could be reached, he told reporters, by dialogue in a way that shows respect to the residents of Umm al-Hiran.

NEGEV (Ma’an) — The Joint List, which represents parties led by Palestinian citizens of Israel in Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, accused Israeli police of spreading misinformation to Israeli media regarding an alleged vehicle attack Wednesday morning in the Negev, in order to distract from Israel’s campaign to establish Jewish-only towns “on the ruins of Bedouin villages.”

The statement warned the Israeli government of the dangerous consequences of the “bloody” escalation, after Israeli police raided the unrecognized Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran to evacuate residents in order to demolish their homes.

The raid turned deadly, when a 47-year-old Palestinian with Israeli citizenship was shot and killed by police “in cold blood,” according to witnesses. However, Israeli police claimed the man deliberately rammed his car into officers.

Hours later, as Israeli bulldozers began razing the homes to the ground, renewed clashes erupted in the village.

Umm al-Hiran is one of 35 Bedouin villages considered “unrecognized” by the Israeli state, and more than half of the approximately 160,000 Negev Bedouins reside in unrecognized villages.

The unrecognized Bedouin villages were established in the Negev soon after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war following the creation of the state of Israel.

Now more than 60 years later, the villages have yet to be recognized by Israel and live under constant threats of demolition and forcible removal.

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Saeb Erekat condemned Israeli authorities for the “crime” committed Wednesday during a demolition campaign in the Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran, during which a Palestinian citizen of Israel was shot dead by Israeli police and an Israeli policeman was killed, and numerous Palestinians were injured.

Erekat accused the Israeli government of reacting to attempts by the international community to achieve peace between Palestinians and Israelis by escalating a policy of “racism, ethnic cleansing, and the evacuation of indigenous Palestinians from their lands, in a desperate attempt to Judaize the country.”

He called attention to the estimated 1.7 million Palestinians with Israeli citizenship who “are living amid the racist system of Israel,” adding that the demolition Palestinian homes in the Israeli city of Qalansawe had “continued in Qalandiya refugee camp yesterday and in Umm al-Hiran today.”

Erekat stressed that the international community’s silence towards Israeli actions only bought time and immunity for Israel to commit more crimes, adding that the situation “requires an immediate and urgent international intervention to stop this chaos before it’s too late.”

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that not holding Israel accountable regarding its role as an occupying power “lessens the credibility of countries who demand reviving and realizing the two-state solution.”

The ministry argued that Israel’s belligerence in the face of international conventions “calls for an international ethical wakening to punish Israel for its violations, and to end its occupation of Palestine.” (...)

Hours after Israeli police gunfire led to the death of a Bedouin man during a violent home demolition operation, Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel is demanding that Israeli authorities investigate the suspicious circumstances of his death.

Mr. Ya’akub Musa Abu Al-Qi’an, a 50-year-old math teacher from Atir-Umm al-Hiran in the Naqab (Negev), Israel’s southern desert region, was killed after Israeli police opened fire on his vehicle as he was driving through the Bedouin village during state preparations for a large-scale home demolition.

The parents of Abu Al-Qi’an have asked Adalah to represent the family and to demand that the Justice Ministry’s Police Investigations Division (Mahash) investigate the circumstances of their son’s death.

In the letter to Mahash, sent late last night (18 January 2017), Adalah Attorneys Nadeem Shehadeh and Mohammad Bassam argue that police video footage of the incident and eyewitness testimony reveal that police opened fire on Abu Al-Qi’an’s vehicle before he accelerated in the direction of officers. BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — The Israeli Police Investigations Division (PID) has decided to close its probe into the January police killing of Palestinian math teacher Yaqoub Abu al-Qian, and to not hold any officers responsible for his death, Adalah – The Legal Center for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, said in a statement on Thursday.

Abu al-Qian, a 50-year-old math teacher from the Bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran in southern Israel’s Negev desert, was shot dead by Israeli police in January while he was driving at night, causing him to spin out of control and crash into Israeli officers, killing one policeman.

Abu al-Qian was driving through the village as dozens of Israeli forces were preparing for a large-scale home demolition in Umm al-Hiran. Israeli forces at the time claimed he was attempted to carry out a vehicular attack, though witness testimonies and video footage of the incident proved contradictory to police accusations.

Israeli police footage appeared to show police officers shooting at al-Qian as he was driving at a very slow pace, and only several seconds after the gunfire does his car appear to speed up, eventfully plowing through police officers.

The killing of Abu al-Qian sparked widespread outrage amongst Palestinian civilians and politicians, who claimed he was “extrajudicially executed.

After demands from his family and the community for police to conduct a probe into his killing, Adalah filed a request demanding the PID open an investigation into the death of Abu al-Qian.

“The closure of this investigation means the PID continues to grant legitimacy to deadly police violence against Arab citizens of Israel,” Adalah said in it’s statement.

  • Palestinian youth killed by Israeli forces after alleged attempted stabbing near Nablus

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian youth was killed by Israeli border police forces on Thursday morning in the northern occupied West Bank after he allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack.

Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri said in a statement in Arabic that an 18-year-old Palestinian “suspiciously approached” Israeli border police officers in an attempt to stab them at the Zaatara junction south of the city of Nablus, prompting Israeli forces to shoot at him, killing him instantly.

Micky Rosenfeld, the English-language spokesperson for the Israeli police, said on Twitter that “Officers were in life threatening situation” when they “responded to knife attack by Palestinian terrorist.”

However, footage taken from a moving car shared on social media purported to show the moments before the man was killed. He can clearly be seen standing immobile several meters away from soldiers who are holding him at gunpoint, seeming to contradict the Israeli authorities’ claim that he posed a threat when he was shot.

Neither al-Samri nor Rosenfeld made mention of any Israelis being injured.

Locals identified the slain Palestinian as Jihad Hussein Harb , 19, from Qalqiliya.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Two Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces after allegedly carrying out a stabbing attack in the southern occupied West Bank city of Hebron on Monday afternoon, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that two Palestinians were “apprehended and neutralized” at the Ibrahimi mosque checkpoint in Hebron after carrying out a stabbing attack on a border police officer.

Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said in a statement in Arabic that border police officers saw two “suspicious” Palestinians approaching the checkpoint and asked them to stop. When the two Palestinian youths continued walking towards them, brandishing knives, the officers opened fire, killing one of them on the scene and critically injuring the other.

A spokesperson for the Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem told Ma’an that the second Palestinian arrived at the hospital “almost dead,” and succumbed to his wounds at the hospital despite attempts to resuscitate him. She added that he had sustained several shots in the upper body.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health later identified the two as 21-year-old Muhannad Jameel al-Rajby and 17-year-old Ameer Jamal al-Rajby from Hebron.

After contradictory reports earlier in the day, al-Samri said that a border police officer sustained a light wound on his hand during the altercation.

A spokesperson for the Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma’an that one of their ambulances was “denied access” to the scene.

The slain youths are the 228th and 229th Palestinians to be killed by Israelis since the beginning of a wave of unrest nearly a year ago across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel. Some 32 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians during the same time period.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces Friday shot and killed a Jordanian youth in occupied East Jerusalem after an alleged stab attack at Damascus Gate in the Old City.

Israeli police spokeswoman for Arabic media Luba al-Samri said in a statement that a “terrorist” attempted a stabbing attack on an Israeli border policeman outside Damascus Gate and was “neutralized” by Israeli forces, a term commonly used by Israeli authorities when Palestinians are shot dead at the scene of an attack or alleged attack.

A witness told Israeli newspaper Haaretz that he didn’t see the man attacking anyone before he was killed. When Israeli police officers suspected the man and and asked him to lift his shirt, he yelled “Allahu akbar” and was shot by one of the officers, the witness added.

Al-Samri added that the youth was a citizen of Jordan in his 20s and entered Palestine on Thursday via the Allenby Bridge crossing between the West Bank and Jordan. He was later identified as Said Amr , 28.

While the youth was initially reported as being Palestinian, it has not yet been made clear if he was a Palestinian citizen of Jordan.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld reported that the youth had three knives that he attempted to use while carrying out the attack, which the spokesman posted on his twitter account.

Rosenfeld also said that there were no Israeli injuries during the attack and Damasus Gate has been completely closed off.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Said Hayil al-Amr “always dreamed of praying in Al-Aqsa Mosque,” his family told Ma’an via telephone from their home in the village of al-Mughayyir in al-Karak, Jordan.

Members of al-Amr’s family said they “doubted the Israeli narrative” of his death. The 28-year-old Jordanian citizen was shot dead by Israeli border police in front of Damascus Gate of occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City Friday afternoon, after he allegedly attempted to stab an Israeli officer stationed there, according to Israeli police. The family is still waiting for al-Amr’s body to be returned to them.

A witness told Israeli newspaper Haaretz at the time that he didn’t see al-Amr attacking anyone before he was killed. When Israeli police officers suspected the man and and asked him to lift his shirt, al-Amr yelled “Allahu akbar,” and was shot by one of the officers, the witness added.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said police found three knives on al-Amr’s person, which Rosenfeld claimed al-Amr intended to use in a stabbing attack.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces Friday shot dead a Palestinian woman who allegedly attempted to carry out a stabbing attack near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the Old City of the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron, according to Israeli sources — the third attack to result in a Palestinian being killed in less than two days.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that the Palestinian woman was shot by border police after revealing a knife at a security checkpoint and attempting to stab the officers. Her condition was initially reported as “critical.”

It was later reported by Rosenfeld that the Palestinian woman had been killed at the scene. No Israelis were injured during the incident.

Israeli media identified the slain Palestinian woman as 27-year-old Sara Hajaj from the village of Bani Naim in Hebron, the same village where a 17-year-old Palestinian boy originated from who carried out a deadly stab attack in the illegal Kiryat Arba settlement just a day before, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old Israeli girl.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli police shot dead two Palestinians outside Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday morning after they opened fire in the area — continuing a string of deadly encounters that shook Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories a day earlier.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the two Palestinians initially opened fire on an Israeli bus in the illegal settlement of Ramot in occupied East Jerusalem, before fleeing the scene without causing any injuries.

The shooting sparked a massive manhunt across Jerusalem, with Israeli police later spotting the car outside the Old City’s New Gate.

Rosenfeld said that a gun battle erupted between Israeli police and the two Palestinians, with both gunmen shot dead. They were later identified as Abdul-Malak Saleh Abu Kharoub ,19, and Muhammad Jamal al-Kalouti , 21.

A Palestinian bystander was also shot in the head in the crossfire. The man, identified as Imad Abu Ali, 57, a resident of Jerusalem’s Old City, was rushed to Hadassah hospital in critical condition.

Rosenfeld said Israeli police were investigating the possibility that Israeli police had shot the bystander.

The incidents come after a day of bloodshed in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory, with four Palestinians shot dead after they carried out separate attacks that killed an American tourist and wounded at least 12 Israelis.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Three Palestinians were shot dead after they allegedly carried out separate attacks in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem, killing one American tourist and wounding at least 12 Israelis, on Tuesday afternoon and evening.

In the first deadly encounter, shortly before 5 p.m., Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said a Palestinian man was shot dead after he allegedly stabbed and wounded an Israeli man near Petah Tikva, around seven miles east of Tel Aviv.

Al-Samri said that an “Arab terrorist” stabbed a Jewish Israeli in his mid-30s “in the upper part of his body,” leaving him with light to moderate injuries.

Israeli police forces arrived on the scene and shot dead the Palestinian, she said, adding that Israeli forces closed the area for investigation.

Later, Israeli daily Haaretz identified the Palestinian as Abd Al-Rahman Radad , 17, from the Auja village in the eastern occupied West Bank district of Jericho.

Minutes later, another Palestinian was shot dead after allegedly firing gunshots at Israeli police forces near Salah al-Din Street in occupied East Jerusalem, injuring two Israeli officers.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said two Israeli policemen were wounded when a Palestinian shot them with an automatic weapon.

A spokesperson for Hadassah hospital later said both Israeli officers had been hit in the head. One of them, aged 47, was in critical condition, fighting for his life, while the other, 31, was in moderate condition.

Shortly after 6 p.m., Israeli police reported a third attack near the port in the Israeli city of Jaffa, with a Palestinian shot dead after he stabbed to death an American tourist and wounded at least nine Israelis.

Israeli emergency services Magen David Adom (MDA) said five people were seriously injured and four moderately.

A spokesperson said the Palestinian attacker had stabbed the Israelis while running along a path near the port.

Israeli police later identified the Palestinian as a 22-year-old from the city of Qalqiliya in the occupied West Bank.

However Haaretz reported that the 22-year-old had been identified as Bashar Masalha from the village of al-Zawiya in the Jenin district.

The incidents followed a fourth deadly encounter on Tuesday, when a Palestinian woman was shot dead by Israeli border police officers after she allegedly attempted to stab them in Jerusalem’s Old City.

      http://www.romandie.com/news/676451.rom

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Three Palestinians were shot dead Wednesday after they killed an Israeli police officer and wounded another in an armed attack near Damascus Gate in occupied East Jerusalem’s Old City, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that “three attackers were shot dead at the scene” by Israeli Border Police after carrying out an attack with knives and an automatic weapon.

The three Palestinian youths had attracted the attention of Israeli Border Police officers as they approached Damascus Gate, police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said.

She said they were stopped by the officers, and as one showed their identification card, another pulled out a gun and opened fire. Two female Border Police officers were wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.

One of them, 19-year-old Hadar Cohen, was shot in her head and later pronounced dead at Hadassah Hospital.

A spokesperson for the hospital said that the other police officer, 18 years old, was in moderate condition, having received stab wounds across her body.

Explosive devices were later found near the site, which was cordoned off following the attack, Rosenfeld said, adding that Israeli forces carried out a controlled explosion of the devices.

Rosenfeld said following initial investigations that the three Palestinians were armed with three automatic weapons.

Witnesses told Ma’an that Israeli forces fired stun grenades and pepper spray near the Salah al-Deen Street and Al-Sultan Suliman streets near Damascus Gate to prevent Palestinians from approaching the area.

Witnesses added the forces also stopped a group of people and inspected them in a “humiliating” way.

Nine youths from Qabatiya village have been killed since the beginning of October.

One of them was a good friend of the three killed on Wednesday, a relative of one of the youths told The New York Times.

Ahmad Awad Abu al-Rab, 17, was shot dead by Israeli soldiers at Jalameh checkpoint near Jenin during what Israel says was an attempted stabbing attack on 2 November last year. Another boy the same age, Mahmoud Kamil, was wounded and arrested during the incident.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights called the shooting of the boys a crime of excessive force.

The teens apparently never made contact with the soldiers before they were shot with live fire.

The Quds news outlet published a photo of Muhammad Kamil participating in a demonstration calling on Israel to return the body Ahmad Awad Abu al-Rab:

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Two Palestinians from Qalandiya were killed after carrying out a stabbing attack at the Jaffa Gate of East Jerusalem’s Old City that left three Israelis injured, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld told Ma’an that Israeli forces present in the area at the time opened fire on the Palestinians during the attack.

Two Israelis were seriously injured and one moderately, according to police spokesperson Luba al-Samri, who added that one of the three was likely injured by live fire when border guards opened fire on the attackers.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals Shaare Zedek and Hadassah, the spokesperson added.

Israeli border guards deployed in the area at the time of the attack said they “noticed people running in panic and saw two ‘terrorists’ carrying knives and stabbing a man,” al-Samri said.

One Palestinian was killed on scene, and the Ein Kerem branch of Hadassah hospital confirmed that the second died shortly after arriving to the hospital.

The Palestinians were identified as Issa Assaf and Anan Abu Habsa from Qalandiya in the occupied West Bank. The area has recently been site to heightened tensions, with two Palestinians killed in the Qalandiya refugee camp last week after attempting to run over Israeli soldiers present in the camp during a predawn arrest raid.

The Jaffa Gate area —the site of Wednesday’s attack and the most commonly-used entrance into the Old City by Jewish Israelis and tourists — was closed by Israeli Border Police following the attack, witnesses in the area said.

HEBRON (Ma’an) — A young Palestinian man was shot dead after he allegedly stabbed and critically wounded an Israeli man near the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron’s Old City on Monday afternoon, Israeli and Palestinian sources said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said Israeli Border Police shot the Palestinian after he stabbed an Israeli man in his 40s.

The Israeli was evacuated to Shaare Zedek hospital in Jerusalem for medical treatment in critical condition.

Locals identified the Palestinian as 21-year-old Ihab Fathi Miswadi . They said Israeli forces prevented Palestinian emergency services from reaching him to medical care after he was shot.

The soldiers did not provide any medical care themselves, locals said.

The Ibrahimi Mosque, which is sacred to both Muslims and Jews, has been the site of a number of deadly encounters in recent months.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian man was shot dead after he allegedly injured two Israelis in a stabbing attack in central Jerusalem on Saturday night, Israeli police said.

Israeli police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld said the Palestinian, identified as a 21-year-old from Beit Hanina in occupied East Jerusalem, was shot and killed after he allegedly hit one Israeli with his car, before stabbing another with a knife.

However, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that one of these Israelis was injured when he was apparently “hit by a vehicle that passed by the scene as he was attempting to flee.”

Rosenfeld initially reported that a third Israeli had been injured during the incident, but later confirmed that this person was treated for shock.

A spokesperson for Shaare Zedek hospital confirmed that two Israelis were brought there with “very light” wounds. She said that one of them was an Israeli soldier, who appeared to have been stabbed, while the other had been hit by a car.

The scene of the incident, in West Jerusalem’s Romema neighborhood, was closed off by Israeli police.
