Remarkably, given its subject, the documentary film Winnie tells a story that has not yet been told. It isn’t that Winnie Mandela’s version of the events that led to the death of Stompie Sepei haven’t been part of the public record. Anyone who followed the news in the early 1990s knows about the case. In…
What it is to be #Winnie_Mandela

I just finished reading a fascinating appetizer to #John_Carlin’s new book on #NELSON_MANDELA, Knowing Mandela, and it set me wondering what might be the place of solitude in the narration of South African #history. Some of the details of the failure of Nelson’s marriage to Winnie are public knowledge while others are revealed for […]

Mandela was extricated from the masses. He was made an idol, almost Jesus Christ! This is nonsense, a lot of nonsense. The freedom of this country was attained by the masses of this country. It was attained by the children who gave their lives in 1976, who faced machine guns with stones and dustbin lids. It was attained by women who were left to fend for their families. They fought the enemy! We are the ones who fought the enemy physically, who went out to face their bullets. The leaders were cushioned behind bars. They don’t know. They never engaged the enemy on the battlefield ...
The problem with #Hollywood Mandelas

More important than the inaccuracies (and makeup malfunctions) is what “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” (which stars #Idris_Elba) erases. Among its elisions are the Cold War, communism (the South African Communist Party recently confirmed that Mandela was indeed a member, which had been something of an open secret for years), U.S. support for apartheid and the apartheid state’s sponsorship of so-called black-on-black violence in the 1980s and early 1990s. (In the #FILM, it seems that Winnie Mandela, painted as an irrational, Lady Macbeth–like character, was the cause of the violence, which in fact resulted from clashes between forces aligned with the African National Congress and state-funded proxy organizations like the nominally Zulu nationalist (...)

Remember when #Darrell_Roodt’s “Winnie” first premiered in 2011 at Toronto #FILM Festival, and tanked? At the time Winnie Mandela herself declared that she didn’t like the film (unfortunately you have to watch Nadia Bilchik deliver this news)–she wasn’t consulted–and threatened to sue the producers. But Mandela needn’t have bothered. The lead actors, #Terrance_Howard and Jennifer […]
