Why is the far-right benefiting from the crisis of capitalism?
    28 September 2017

Sunday’s election in Germany saw the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and collapse of the official left party, the Social Democratic Party. With more than 90 deputies in the incoming parliament, the entry of the AfD will mark the first time since the end of the Third Reich that outright fascists and racists participate in the national legislature.

Far from an exception, the electoral triumph of the neo-fascist party in Germany is part of a pattern being repeated again and again throughout Europe and internationally.

Behind the electoral success of the far right in Germany
    By Peter Schwarz
    28 September 2017

“How could it come to this?” Many people are asking themselves this question following the far right Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) electoral success in the federal elections held on Sunday.

With the AfD, more than 90 deputies—open Nazis, racists and xenophobes—are entering parliament 72 years after the downfall of Hitler’s Third Reich. Alexander Gaulland, the 76-year-old lead candidate, made this abundantly clear, calling for Germans to be proud of the achievements of German soldiers in two world wars—that is, to take pride in a criminal war of aggression, complicity in the Holocaust and the cold-blooded murder of millions of civilians, partisans and prisoners of war.

  • In refugee crisis, Angela #Merkel stands tall
    http://www.thearabweekly.com/?id=2742

The debate over the wisdom of opening the door so wide in September has rekindled speculation about the future of Merkel. Can she survive the refugee crisis and run, and win, a fourth term? The next federal elections are scheduled for September 2017 and Merkel said in August — before the refugee flood rose to unprecedented levels — that she intended to run.

However, there is renewed speculation that Merkel has an eye on a post that would enhance her global stature: secretary-general of the United Nations.

In February, a group of prominent women from academia formed the Campaign to Elect a Woman UN Secretary-General, pointing out that there have been eight men to hold the job since the world body was established 70 years ago. It’s high time for a woman, the group argues.

Merkel is on the group’s list of potential candidates, alongside such figures as International Monetary Fund boss Christine Lagarde, former Irish President Mary Robinson, former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief. Before the campaign listed its candidates alphabetically, Merkel topped the list. Her stand on the refugee crisis has won applause from many UN members.

  • L’analyse décapatante de l’actualité européenne par la presse irlandaise :

Confirmation that the talks will be delayed until after the German federal elections will be seen as further evidence of the power Europe’s most populous nation now has over the rest of the EU, and moves Europe closer to the US political system which effectively shuts down ahead of presidential elections there.

Ireland’s strategy for exiting the bailout is not the only item that has been apparently held up by the German political calendar.

Arizona’s Proposition 200, passed in 2004, prohibits local officials from registering any would-be voter who does not provide “satisfactory evidence of United States citizenship.” That requirement conflicts with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, also known as the Motor Voter Act, which set up a national registration system for federal elections.

  • Overcoming Islamophobia in US elections

    http://www.commongroundnews.org/article.php?id=30942&lan=en&sp=0

Newark, Delaware - Islam has become an important part of American discourse leading up to the 2012 federal elections and candidates everywhere appear eager to take a position on Islam for political gain. Across the country, rising Islamophobia has made it difficult for some Muslims to build mosques and practice their faith, although their right to do so is enshrined in the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

In the current race for the presidential nomination, some presidential candidates are invoking Islam and Muslims in a negative fashion in an attempt to bolster their popularity with populations they perceive to be suspicious of Muslims or Islam. For example, if elected, former presidential candidate Herman Cain promised not to appoint Muslims to his cabinet.

“One way forward is the creation of a nation-wide electoral district for federal elections in which every Belgian, regardless of residence, can vote for Flemish and Walloon candidates.”
