    Jeannette Wicks-Lim [assistant research professor at PERI institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst] : according to official figures 15 percent of Americans live in poverty, real numbers are over 33 percent of Americans cannot meet basic needs.

    The official poverty income threshold is about $23,000 [for a a family of four], and I’m saying about double that is a much more reasonable threshold, something on the order of $45,000, to cover the basic needs of a family of four.

    Almost every major religion breeds ascetics; wandering monks who have renounced all earthly possessions, dedicating their lives to the pursuit of spiritual liberation.Their reality is dictated only by the mind, not material objects. Even death is not a fearsome concept, but a passing from the world of illusion.

    AARP Leadership Profile:

    Life Perspectives

    "I grew up in West Texas, raised by a single mother. I was a first-generation college graduate. So I’ve lived through lots of what our members are living through.

    "Communications and politics have really been my longstanding interests, including technology access and equity, disabled rights, communication strategies and social movement building. I have a political background, and I started a public radio station in Sacramento and ran it for a while. We now have six radio stations there, the Capital Public Radio Network.

    "I have taught mostly technology policy and technology evolution — the hardware stuff. I also teach political communications and the impact of messaging on social movement formation.

    "I was fortunate enough to go to the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, which is very geeky, so I was able to keep up with technology as it evolved. I chaired the California Public Broadcasting Commission, and I’m now an officer and director of the California Emerging Technology Fund.

    “AARP provides me an opportunity to do tele-health, to deal with issues of getting the 50-plus generation online. I get to help people who are unemployed at 50, using the Web. So being part of the AARP board is really a wonderful synergy of my interests and the organization’s interests….”

    "It’s getting more and more difficult to find a center in American politics. Part of it is the media’s fault. The news hole, in both broadcast and in print, has really been reduced. The downsizing and the mergers and acquisitions that have gone on in the media world have really done a disservice to public policy discussion. It’s made the media more event- and scandal-chasing — the lowest common denominator.

    "In political campaigns, it’s 30-second spots. So it’s no surprise that the public has fatigue about dealing with politicians. Every poll in America shows that they are held in very low esteem.

    "We can’t return to retail politics because we have the technology and everyone is used to using it. But longer formats, discussions, call-ins, coherent talk would be welcome. Certainly, AARP’s members would welcome that to address their concerns about big things such as Social Security.

    "AARP is nonpartisan, and ours is a trusted voice. We have to provide the voice of reason in these debates, so that it’s not a partisan political discussion, but really a rational, practical discussion.

    "People really do care about the issues that we work on. They’re central to their lives. We have to find a coherent solution to intractable problems.

    "We need to be very heavily data-driven. I think we do that, by the way. I think staff and our board are the best. And our volunteers are terrific. So I’m optimistic, actually.

    "A big part of our job as board members is to listen. You don’t let your own biases govern what you do. I have to listen to what the data says and to what members are telling me.

    “So if you’re data-driven and you really do listen to the members tell you what their issues are — and we have very good organs of information that help us with that, by the way, in the organization — then you can find consensus.”

  • Indicted Aaron Swartz Hires Keker & Van Nest

    Aaron Swartz, who faces up to 35 years in prison, recently hired San Francisco-based Keker & Van Nest to represent him, according to court documents filed with the United States District Court of Massachusetts.

    Attorney Matthias Kammber of Keker & Van Nest informed the court that Swartz’s local attorney, Martin Weinberg, “will be withdrawing as counsel” and will be replaced by Cody Harris, Daniel Purcell, and top gun Elliot Peters, all of Keker & Van Nest.

    Swartz, 25, is a fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Centre for Ethics and is charged with wire fraud, computer fraud, unlawfully obtaining information from a protected computer, and recklessly damaging a protected computer. If convicted on these charges, Swartz faces up to 35 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and a fine of up to $1 million, according to a press release issued by United States Attorney Carmen Ortiz.

    In various declarations submitted to the court, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen Heymann and Scott Garland alleged that Swartz — who is not a student, faculty member, or employee of MIT — gained physical access to MIT’s computer network through a laptop computer he installed in a restricted wiring closet in the basement of a research building, and that he intentionally masked his face with a bicycle helmet to avoid identification on a video camera as he entered the closet to remove the laptop; they also alleged that Swartz used fictitious names and manipulated computer identification information to get and maintain access to MIT’s computer network, and that he took repeated and affirmative steps to evade efforts by both MIT and JSTOR to lock him out of their computer networks.

    In somewhat related news, Swartz and Larry Lessig, also of Harvard University’s Safra Centre for Ethics, are presently also being scrutinized as part of an ongoing non-criminal inquiry conducted by the author stemming from myriad suspicious financial transactions in connection with circumstances surrounding Chris Young (presently an attorney with Keker & Van Nest), defunct non-profit entity CaliforniaALL, Mitchell and Freada Kapor (a director of CaliforniaALL) of The Kapor Center, Bettina Neuefeind (wife of Larry Lessig), and two non-profit entities bearing the same name of “Democracy Fund,Inc.” — EIN 27-2439840 and EIN 26-3088283 — with connections to Lessig and Swartz.

    Although other potential explanations certainly exist, as matters presently stand, it appears that in 2007-2008, Democratic party agents may have participated in what appears to be unexplained financial machinations relating to the California Bar Foundation and newly created non-profit entity CaliforniaALL with respect to funds originating from major utility companies and the California Bar Foundation, in order to promote the election of Barack Obama in general, and on behalf of those seeking to promote green energy in particular.

    Specifically:

    MORRISON & FOERSTER attorneys James Brosnahan (self-proclaimed “mastermind” behind the Democratic Party), Tony West (Barack Obama’s Chair of the California Finance Committee), Chris Young ("Obama for America" Northern California Deputy Finance Director), Annette Carnegie (2007-2008 director with the California Bar Foundation); Kamala Harris (co-chair, Obama for America and member of CaliforniaALL);

    MUNGER TOLLES & OLSON attorneys Jeffrey Bleich (president of the State Bar of California, director of the California Bar Foundation, founding member and Chair of OBAMA FOR AMERICA’s National Finance Committee who pushed for the creation of CaliforniaALL, as well as for the appointment of director Freada Klein Kapor), Brad Phillips (2007- 2008 Director of the California Bar Foundation which served as a “financial sponsor” to CaliforniaALL on behalf of Verizon Wireless and Southern California Edison, both clients of Munger Tolles & Olson) (examination of the IRS 990 Verizon Wireless submitted to the IRS shows absolutely no payments to either CaliforniaALL or the California Bar Foundation);

    WILSON SONSINI attorneys Mark Parnes (2007-2008 director and Secretary of the California Bar Foundation), John Roos (former CEO of Wilson Sonsini in Palo Alto; a personal friend of both President Obama and Jeffrey Bleich, currently serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Japan; similar to Ambassador Bleich, Ambassador Roos acted as a “bundler” and raised over $500,000 for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign);

    DLA PIPER attorney Steven Churchwell in Sacramento (Treasurer, draft committee of OBAMA FOR AMERICA); firm where CaliforniaALL resided free of charge;

    KAMALA HARRIS (co-chair, OBAMA FOR AMERICA ; member of CaliforniaALL); Harris is the sister of Maya Harris, who is married to Tony West, the chair of Barack Obama’s California Finance Committee who now serves as third in command within the United States Department of Justice below Eric Holder and Lanny Breuer;

    CaliforniaALL Director OPHELIA BASGAL of the Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD"): In around 2007-2008, Ms. Basgal was Vice President of Civic Partnership and Community Initiatives at PG&E, where she managed the company’s $18 million charitable contribution program, and oversaw its community engagement programs and partnerships with community-based organizations. Separately, around that time she also served as treasurer of the “California Supreme Court Historical Society.” In that role, she presumably had contact with many judges, including those who were handling matters dealing with PG&E, such as Justice (Ret.) Joseph Grodin who acted as the mediator in a case Attorney General Bill Lockyer advanced against PG&E, which Jerry Brown (cousin of Geoffrey Brown) later dismissed in his capacity as the new Attorney General for California;

    LARRY LESSIG, FREADA KLEIN KAPOR, MITCHELL KAPOR, BETTINA NEUEFEIND, AARON SWARTZ: Around 2007-2008, Jeffrey Bleich caused the appointment of Freada Klein Kapor as Director of then newly-established CaliforniaALL. In a press release, the public was misled to believe that Freada Kapor is a diversity expert who operates an entity known as the Level Playing Field Institute. There was no mention that Freada Kapor is the owner of The Kapor Center, located at 543 Howard St., 5th. Floor, in San Francisco, which was used as telephone bank by volunteers of OBAMA FOR AMERICA, and received frequent visits from Bettina Neuefeind — wife of Larry Lessig — who served as the Office Manager of OBAMA FOR AMERICA in San Francisco.

    Similarly, there was no mention, that tech-guru Mitchell Kapor — founder of Lotus 1-2-3 and the spouse of Freada Kapor, is part of OBAMA FOR AMERICA’s technical team.

    Also located at The Kapor Center at 543 Howard St., 5th. Floor, in San Francisco were two newly created non-profit entities launched by Larry Lessig, Aaron Swartz, Joe Trippi, and Monica Walsh (a friend of Bettina) known as “Change Congress” and “Change V2 Foundation.”

    Following the 2008 election of President Obama, Larry Lessig and his wife departed California. In 2010, Larry Lessig, Monica Walsh, and others launched a whole new Section 501(C) non-profit entity known as “Democracy Fund, Inc.”, EIN 27-2439840. On June 6, 2011, Larry Lessig, Monica Walsh, and others caused Change V2 Foundation (which was launched in 2008) to also operate under the name “Democracy Fund, Inc.” (EIN 26-3088283).

    The case against Aaron Swartz is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephen P. Heymann and Scott L. Garland of Ortiz’s Cybercrime Unit. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA v. AARON SWARTZ Criminal No. 11-10260-NMG . Contact the author yoloanrabbi@gamil.com

  • Lebanon’s Siniora had said ‘no’ to Malta hosting UN tribunal on Hariri assassination
    http://www.maltatoday.com.mt/en/newsdetails/news/world/Lebanon-s-Siniora-had-said-no-to-Malta-hosting-UN-tribunal-on-Hariri-

    Former Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora had expressed “unease” at a United States proposal in 2007 to have Malta host the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) which was set up by a United Nations Security Council Resolution to prosecute those responsible for the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri in Beirut.

    A US embassy cable signed by Ambassador Jeffrey D. Feltman in Beirut in May 2007, revealed details of a meeting between US assistant secretary for international organisation affairs Kristen Silverberg with Lebanon’s then Prime Minister Fouad Siniora.

    Silverberg had pressed Siniora on the site selection to host the tribunal and had touted Malta and Cyprus as possible venues.

    But the US cable goes on to say that “concerning site selection, Siniora expressed unease over placing the tribunal in either Cyprus or Malta.”

    According to the cable, Siniora said “that Syrian intelligence has numerous assets in Cyprus, while the security establishing the court in Malta may be compromised as well, but by Libyan agents.”

    The Lebanese Prime Minister had indicated to the US that placing the new tribunal in a secure European city would be preferable.

  • Lanny Breuer — USDOJ’s Assistant Attorney General — Alleged Lack of Integrity Source (Yet Again) of Even Greater Concern Amid Newest Revelations Involving Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Ophelia Basgal — Board Member of CaliforniaALL

    TLR has learned that a recent abrupt move by a politically-connected litigation boutique firm is the subject of an intense and comprehensive examination that the septet of James Brosnahan, Tony West, Chris Young, Annette Carnegie, Ophelia Basgal, Judy Johnson, and Jeff Bleich was somehow involved in improperly transferring money from Cal Bar Foundation to Barack Obama’s coffers.

    As matters presently stand, prima facie evidence creates the appearance of a sophisticated financial scheme executed in 2008 involving Democratic party operatives James Brosnahan of Morrison & Foerster, Jeffrey Bleich of Munger Tulles & Olson (the current U.S. Ambassador to Australasia and friend of President Obama), Assistant Attorney General Derek Anthony West (aka Tony West), and Chris Young, as well as others to misuse the $780,000 originating from the California Bar Foundation.

    According to the sources, in 2007-2008:

    –James Brosnahan, the self proclaimed “mastermind behind the Democratic Party” (and former prosecutor of Caspar Weinberger), while associated with Morrison & Foerster executed from behind the scenes a scheme known as CaliforniaALL, which collected “hush-hush” sub rosa funds totaling approximately $780,000 from the Foundation of the State Bar of California.

    –Chris Young, while associated with Morrison & Foerster, served as Barack Obama’s Northern California Deputy Finance Director.

    –Tony West, while associated with Morrison & Foerster, served as Barack Obama’s California Co-Chair of the California Finance Committee.

    –Susan MacCormac, while associated with Morrison & Foerster, legally created the entity known as CaliforniaALL and served as its legal counsel.

    –Annette Carnegie, while associated with Morrison & Foerster, served as a board member of the California Bar Foundation during the period of the sub rosa transfer of the above-referenced $780,000.

    –Jeffrey Bleich, while associated with Munger Tolles & Olsen, served as a member of both the Board of Governors and the California Bar Foundation’s board during the period of the sub rosa transfer of $780,000. Bleich is a friend of President Obama who presently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Australia. Verizon Communications (which heavily contributed to CaliforniaALL) is a client of Munger Tules & Olson, where Bleich serves as partner.

  • Jailed for $280: The Return of Debtors’ Prisons - Yahoo! Finance
    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/jailed-for--280--the-return-of-debtors--prisons.html

    How did breast cancer survivor Lisa Lindsay end up behind bars? She didn’t pay a medical bill — one the Herrin, Ill., teaching assistant was told she didn’t owe. “She got a $280 medical bill in error and was told she didn’t have to pay it,” The Associated Press reports. “But the bill was turned over to a collection agency, and eventually state troopers showed up at her home and took her to jail in handcuffs.”

    Although the U.S. abolished debtors’ prisons in the 1830s, more than a third of U.S. states allow the police to haul people in who don’t pay all manner of debts, from bills for health care services to credit card and auto loans. In parts of Illinois, debt collectors commonly use publicly funded courts, sheriff’s deputies, and country jails to pressure people who owe even small amounts to pay up, according to the AP.

  • “Anonymous” Reveals Meetings Between Ron Paul And Neo-Nazis | News One
    http://newsone.com/nation/casey-gane-mccalla/anonymous-reveals-close-ties-between-ron-paul-and-neo-nazis

    he group of hackers known as “Anonymous” has shut down several neo-Nazi websites owned by Jamie Kelso, a former John Birch Society member, assistant to David Duke and moderator for the white supremacist website, Stormfront.

    “Anonymous” claims to have recovered emails from Kelso that prove that Ron Paul has regularly met with members of Jamie Kelso’s neo-Nazi political party American Third Position and even was on several conference calls with their board of directors. Here is a statement from “Anonymous” from one of the neo-Nazi websites they shut down.

    In addition to finding the usual racist rants and interactions with other white

    power groups, we also found a disturbingly high amount of members who are also

    involved in campaigning for Ron Paul. According to these messages, Ron Paul has

    regularly met with many A3P members, even engaging in conference calls with

    their board of directors. Ron Paul’s racist politics and

    affiliations are already well known, being viciously anti-immigrant,

    anti-abortion and against gay marriage — not to mention having authored the

    racist “Ron Paul Papers” and receiving financial support from other white power

    groups (pictured with Don Black from stormfront.org). Hard to believe Ron Paul

    draws some support from the left and the occupation movements, especially now

    that it is confirmed Ron Paul hangs out with straight up racist hate groups.

    We put extra effort in ruining the life of A3P webmaster Jamie Kelso. On top of

    being on the board of directors of A3P, former $cientologist, and high ranking

    Ron Paul organizer, he also is the account owner of german nazi forums and store

    nsl-forum.org, rhs-versand.com.

    Temporary workers at the #Fukushima plant in 2010 also faced radiation levels 16 times higher than did employees of the plant’s owner-operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., because contractors are called in for the most dangerous work, according to the government’s industrial safety agency.

    “This job is a death sentence, performed by workers who aren’t being given information about the dangers they face,” said Hiroaki Koide, an assistant professor at Kyoto University’s Research Reactor Institute and author of the book “The Lie of Nuclear Power.”

  • Latina Lista : MediaCasts

    University research underscores why media’s increasing sexualization of women should alarm Latinas

    http://www.latinalista.net/mediacasts/2011/08/university_research_underscores_why_medi.html

    Assistant Professors Erin Hatton and Mary Nell Trautner studied 40 years worth of covers of Rolling Stone magazine to see how the portrayal of men and women has changed. Their findings reveal a disturbing trend, that is not surprising, but still should be a wake-up call for American society.

    While sex may help sell media products, it poses a bigger risk to the well-being and health of women and girls in general as the researchers noted:

    ...sexualized images may legitimize or exacerbate violence against women and girls, sexual harassment, and anti-women attitudes among men, increase rates of body dissatisfaction and/or eating disorders among men, women, and girls, increase teen sexual activity and decrease women and men’s sexual satisfaction.

    Clearly equal representation of men and women in the media doesn’t exist.

    “I was surprised at how little change there was in sexualized images of men over time,” Professor Trautner wrote Latina Lista in an email. "In the 1960s, 11 percent of men were sexualized, and that number increased to only 17 percent in the 2000s.

    Jeffrey Feltman, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, said that the United States is ready to cooperate with the Muslim Brotherhood so long as it respects the rule of democracy, minorities’ rights and human rights; as a sector of the Egyptian society with which Washington will be communicating, the Brothers are part of the international community.

    Moreover, he charged that sectarian strife was a distraction created by the former regime, which as recent events demonstrate is not a major issue in Egypt.

    Court extrait d’une interview télévisée du général Westley Clark sur la décision de l’administration Bush d’attaquer l’Irak.

    Transcript Gen. Wesley Clark from the LRC Blog.
    transcribed 18 July 2011 by Max Thompson

    About 10 days after 9/11 I went through the Pentagon and I saw Secretary Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz. I went downstairs just to say hello to some of the people on the joint staff who used to work for me and one of the generals called me in and he said, “Sir, you’ve got to come in, you’ve got to come in and talk to me a second”
    I said, “well you’re too busy.”
    He said “No, no”, look he says, “we’ve made the decision. We’re going to war with Iraq.” This was on or about the 20th of September.
    I said, “we’re going to war with Iraq, why?”
    He said, “I don’t know.” [audience laughs]
    He said, “I guess they don’t know what else to do.”
    So I say, “well did they find some information connecting Saddam to Al Qaeda?”
    And he said “No, no,” he says, “there’s nothing new that way. They’ve just made the decision to go to war with Iraq”. He said, “I guess it’s like…we don’t know what to do about terrorists but we’ve got a good military and we can take down governments”. And he said “I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem has to look like a nail.”
    So, I came back to see him a few weeks later. And by that time we were bombing in Afghanistan, I said “ are we still going to war in Iraq?”
    He said “Oh, it’s worse than that.” He said, he reached over on his desk and picked up a piece of paper, he said “I just”, he said “I just got this down from upstairs”, Meaning the Secretary of defence’s Office, “today.” And he said “this is a memo describes how we’re gonna take out 7 countries in 5 years, starting with Iraq and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran”.
    GAP
    The truth is about the Middle East is has there been no oil there it would be like Africa. Nobody is threatening to intervene in Africa, the problem is the opposite. We keep asking for people to intervene and stop it. And there’s, there’s no question that the presence of petroleum throughout the region has sparked great power involvement. Whether that was the specific motivation for the coup or not I can’t tell you, but, but, there was definitely there has always been this attitude that somehow we could intervene and use force in the region.

    http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2011/08/9-11-2011-201108

    Late on the night of the 13th, Prince Bandar’s assistant called the F.B.I.’s assistant director for counterterrorism, Dale Watson. He needed help, the assistant said, in getting bin Laden “family members” out of the country. Watson said Saudi officials should call the White House or the State Department. The request found its way to counterterrorism coordinator Richard Clarke, who has acknowledged that he gave the go-ahead for the flights. He has said he has “no recollection” of having cleared it with anyone more senior in the administration.

    An F.B.I. memo written two years after the exodus appears to acknowledge that some of the departing Saudis may have had information pertinent to the investigation. Asked on CNN the same year whether he could say unequivocally that no one on the evacuation flights had been involved in 9/11, Saudi Embassy information officer Nail al-Jubeir responded by saying he was sure of only two things, that “there is the existence of God, and then we will die at the end of the world. Everything else, we don’t know.”

  • Longue et fascinante interview de Brandon Graham, génie inclassable de la BD américaine :

    http://supervillain.wordpress.com/2011/07/02/emma-peel-sessions-62-brandon-graham-interview

    I had this idea for a book that starts as a Scott McCloud how to draw comics or how to do perspective or draw manga book– hosted by a guy and his beautiful assistant. 3 chapters in to a standard how book to the assistant is found dead and then the learning comics part gets dropped and it switches to a murder mystery.

    Or like, I’ve never seen a serious comic showing the life cycle of a fungus

    Even if stories come from the old roots I think doing them in new ways creates something bigger than just the root idea. plus as a reader or an artist I feel like you have to have hope for undiscovered country. You can’t be an explorer that already expects every mountain to have a flag planted on it– there are still mountains on mars.
