In December, documentary photographer Carol Highsmith received a letter from Getty Images accusing her of copyright infringement for featuring one of her own photographs on her own website.

It demanded payment of $120.
This was how Highsmith came to learn that stock photo agencies Getty and Alamy had been sending similar threat letters and charging fees to users of her images, which she had donated to the Library of Congress for use by the general public at no charge.

Now, Highsmith has filed a $1 billion copyright infringement suit against both Alamy and Getty for “gross misuse” of 18,755 of her photographs. “The defendants [Getty Images] have apparently misappropriated Ms. Highsmith’s generous gift to the American people,” the complaint reads. 

“[They] are not only unlawfully charging licensing fees … but are falsely and fraudulently holding themselves out as the exclusive copyright owner.” According to the lawsuit, Getty and Alamy, on their websites, have been selling licenses for thousands of Highsmith’s photographs, many without her name attached to them and stamped with “false watermarks.”

A team of foreign fighters hailing from Europe, Canada and the US who made the perilous journey to Syria have been photographed alongside Kurdish fighters battling against Isis.

Uygar Onder Simsek, a documentary photographer, spent a week with about 30 international fighters who joined the People’s Protection Unit (YPG) in the north-western Syrian town of Tal Tamr, north of Hasakeh, near the border with Turkey.

He travelled to Tal Tamr after meeting a Spanish fighter in the Syrian-Turkey border city of Kobane, who advised him many foreign fighters were located there.

#Kaveh_Golestan - The #Citadel

Kaveh Golestan (1950-2003) was an important and prolific Iranian documentary photographer and a pioneer of #street_photography. His photographic practice has hugely informed the work of future generations of Iranian artists but has remained seriously over-looked in Europe. The Citadel presents 45 vintage photographs from the series entitled Prostitute taken between 1975-1977 of women working in the Citadel of #Shahr-e_No, the #red_light_district of #Tehran. The photographs will be exhibited for the first time as a vintage set since 1978. Alongside the photographs, the exhibition will include original diaries of Golestan, newspaper clippings and audio interviews that he collected from and relating to the area.

Life After Death in Chicago

“If it was a 17-year-old boy, it probably would not have gotten as much attention, but you can’t really push it that way with a little girl,” said Carlos #Javier_Ortiz, a #documentary photographer in Chicago. “You hear it on the news, and we have these assumptions about people, thinking everything is gang related, but it’s not. The thing is, I’m trying to go beyond the headlines and show these are real people.”

Indeed, when Hadiya Pendleton was killed, Mr. Ortiz was already into his seventh year documenting how violence affected families, primarily in Chicago, where he was raised and now lives. From the sidewalk memorials and the anti-violence rallies to the homes left broken or the wounded trying to recover, he was there. After an October workshop sequencing and editing his images at Red Hook Editions, he is now preparing a book and has started a #Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 to finance its publication. (A 2011 campaign, as well as exhibitions, allowed him to pursue the project and produce video.)

The book’s title, “We All We Got,” is a nod to a theme running throughout the work.
