I read Prefer STRICT tables in #SQLite by Evan Hahn last week, and it got me thinking. Here is someone treating SQLite as a database you put real, typed, production data into. Which raises the obvious question: how far does that actually go?

So we found out. We built a social network on SQLite, 50,000 users and a million posts in a single 343MB file, put it behind a Node API, made every table STRICT on Evan’s advice, and hammered it until the numbers stopped being flattering. This post is what came back: the benchmarks, the config, the code, and the places it falls over.

The short version: one file, one process, and the heaviest page in the app served 315 million requests a day on a laptop. For almost anything you are building, SQLite in #WAL mode is enough, and the #Postgres container you spun up out of habit was never needed.

If you want the evidence rather than the argument, skip straight to the benchmarks. The limits are here too, and they are real.

L’#Île-de-France claque aussi la porte à #Microsoft : place aux solutions 100 % françaises pour ses 550 000 élèves

Et si les données personnelles de nos enfants n’appartenaient plus, par défaut, aux géants américains de la tech ? C’est le pari que s’apprête à tenir la Région Île-de-France en organisant la sortie de Microsoft de ses lycées. Une décision politique et technique lourde de sens, qui pourrait bien faire des émules.

Dès la rentrée 2025, la Région Île-de-France mettra fin à l’utilisation des solutions Microsoft pour centraliser et traiter les informations de ses quelque 550 000 lycéens. Ce n’est pas une simple migration technique, mais bien un acte politique fort en faveur de la souveraineté numérique.

Au cœur de cette décision se trouve une préoccupation majeure : la #protection_des_données face à l’extraterritorialité du droit américain, incarnée par le fameux #Cloud_Act. Cette loi permet en effet aux autorités américaines de réclamer des données stockées sur les serveurs d’entreprises américaines... Même lorsque ces serveurs se trouvent à l’étranger.

Une perspective jugée inacceptable par l’exécutif régional pour des informations aussi sensibles que les notes, les emplois du temps ou les communications entre élèves, professeurs et parents.

Le projet consiste donc à fédérer plusieurs briques logicielles souveraines au sein d’une plateforme unique. Pour cela, la Région s’appuie sur un consortium d’acteurs français dont les premiers noms se précisent. La bascule la plus significative, déjà engagée depuis septembre, est la migration des comptes #Microsoft_365 vers le cloud de #Leviia, dont les #data_centers sont situés en France.

Pour la brique de vie scolaire, le nom de #Docaposte est avancé, la filiale numérique du Groupe La Poste qui a racheté la société #Index_Éducation, éditeur du logiciel #PRONOTE. À terme, l’ensemble de ces services sera intégré dans la plateforme commune MonLycée.net pour les 550 000 lycéens et professeurs.

Si la transition s’annonce progressive et ne concerne pas, pour l’heure, tous les services informatiques de la collectivité, elle constitue un signal très puissant. L’initiative francilienne n’est d’ailleurs pas un cas isolé puisque la ville de Lyon a déjà amorcé un virage similaire en se tournant vers des alternatives libres comme #OnlyOffice, #Linux ou #PostgreSQL pour remplacer les solutions de la firme de #Redmond.

Getting postgres unstuck when it seems to “hang” or be super slow on queriesSo, I was recently trying to insert 8 million rows into a table in my database (just another day in grad school) and noticed that the query was taking longer than usual. However, if I just selected the 8 million rows, it would execute pretty fast.
