    I am very sorry to hear that #Leiden University’s management has cancelled a student-led event on Palestine next week. This is in clear breach of academic freedom and makes a mockery of the university’s motto “#praesidium_libertatis”.
    A university manager used the spurious claim that the chair of the event was not “neutral” and should be changed. The students rightly rejected this discriminatory charge against a Palestinian female scholar. The event will now be held at another institution in the Hague.
    This decision is in sharp contrast to the university’s stance on Ukraine in recent weeks. The university has hosted numerous events and made public statements. But war and occupation in Palestine are just as important and should also be discussed on campus.
    If we cannot have these discussions in the university where can have them? Academic freedom is for everyone or it is for no one.
