Tensions between Washington and Moscow rise as Russia intercepts US spy planes over Black Sea

Moscow and Washington traded accusations yesterday over an incident involving US reconnaissance aircraft and Russian SU27 fighters in the Black Sea that once again demonstrates how perilously close a military clash between the two nuclear-armed powers is.

Two US defense officials denounced Russia for carrying out an “unsafe and unprofessional” act by flying within 10 feet of two US spy planes conducting patrols over the Black Sea. A Pentagon spokesman told RT that a P-8A Poseidon aircraft was conducting “routine operations in international airspace” when it was approached by the fighter jets around 11:20 a.m.

A Russian jet spiraled dangerously close to an American plane over the Baltic Sea earlier this week.

The plane, a Russian SU-27, performed a barrel roll over a US RC-135 in international airspace, the US European Command told CNN on Saturday.

The Russian jet began its course on the left side of the American reconnaissance plane, then went over it while spiraling on itself and finished on the right side.

Russia’s aircraft ’performed erratic and aggressive maneuvers’ on Thursday during a routine flight, European Command spokesman Danny Hernandez told CNN.

Hernandez said the RC-135 had been intercepted by the SU-27 ’in an unsafe and unprofessional manner’.
The Russian jet flew just 50 feet away from the American’s plane wing tip, he added.
The American plane didn’t enter Russian territory during the flight, according to Hernandez.

’The unsafe and unprofessional actions of a single pilot have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries,’ Hernandez told CNN.
The US has complained about the incident to the Russian government.

A NATO patrol intercepted Russian fighter jets over the Baltic Sea, Lithuanian authorities said on Wednesday, as Moscow marks the anniversary of its takeover of Crimea with one of its largest military drills in years.

The group of eight Su-27 and Su-34 fighter jets and three Russian military transports was intercepted over international waters on Tuesday, a Lithuanian Ministry of Defence spokeswoman said.

“These were first Russian fighters intercepted by NATO’s Baltic air police this year,” Viktorija Cieminyte said, adding that the Russian pilots switched off their transponders to avoid commercial radar and did not talk to air traffic control.

“Civil aviation over the Baltic Sea was endangered because of the secretive way the airplanes flew,” she said.

A year after annexing Crimea from Ukraine, Russia announced the start of military exercises on Monday involving war planes, submarines and more than 45,000 troops and due to range from the Arctic to the Black Sea.

In Tuesday’s sortie, the Russian jets flew unannounced from mainland Russia to the Kaliningrad enclave bordering NATO member states Poland and Lithuania, Cieminyte said.

Sixteen other Russian military planes - intelligence gathering aircraft, mid-air refuellers and transports - have been intercepted by NATO’s Baltic air patrol so far this year, according to weekly reports from the Lithuanian ministry.
