The Antarctic Projection: a Penguin’s World Map
by Frans Blok · Published 11. April 2017 · Updated 12. April 2017
A world map tells a lot about the person who has made it, or about the market it is made for. Here in Europe, we think it’s only logical to place the edge of the map in the Bering Strait and the Pacific. After all, there is almost nobody living there and besides: this way we put ourselves nicely in the middle.

Map Projections
Flattening the Earth
It’s impossible to flatten the Earth without distorting it in some fashion. Consider an orange peel: if you want to try and lay it flat, you have to stretch it, squash it, and tear it. Likewise with the Earth—if we want to make a map, we need to distort the Earth’s surface to flatten it. The good news is that map projections allow us to distort systematically; we know exactly how things are being stretched or squashed at any given point. We have many different map projections because each has different patterns of distortion—there is more than one way to flatten an orange peel. Some projections can even preserve certain features of the Earth without distorting them, though they can’t preserve everything.
Boston public schools map switch aims to amend 500 years of distortion | Education | The Guardian
►https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/mar/19/boston-public-schools-world-map-mercator-peters-projection
When Boston public schools introduced a new standard map of the world this week, some young students’ felt their jaws drop. In an instant, their view of the world had changed.
The USA was small. Europe too had suddenly shrunk. Africa and South America appeared narrower but also much larger than usual. And what had happened to Alaska?
In an age of “fake news” and “alternative facts”, city authorities are confident their new map offers something closer to the geographical truth than that of traditional school maps, and hope it can serve an example to schools across the nation and even the world.

Herbert Bayer and his World Geo-Graphical Atlas
►http://www.codex99.com/design/the-world-geographical-atlas.html
The World Geo-Graphical Atlas
Herbert Bayer and the CCA
Herbert Bayer (5 Apr 1900 – 30 Sep 1985) began his career studying archirecture under Georg Schmidthammer and later painting at the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony. Inspired by Walter Gropius’ Bauhaus manifesto, he enrolled in the Weimar Bauhaus and studied painting under Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and László Moholy-Nagy. After passing his journeymans exam Gropius appointed him as the junior master of the newly-created typography workshop. Bayer spent three years on faculity at Dessau before starting his own design firm in Berlin.1
Bayer was among the last of the Bauhaus faculty to emigrate from Germany, leaving for New York only after his work was singled out by the Nazis in their infamous 1937 Degenerate Art Exhibition.

All maps are wrong. I cut open a globe to show why. - Vox

Maps are flat representations of our spherical planet. I cut open a plastic globe to understand just what it takes to turn a sphere into something flat:
A More Accurate World Map Wins Prestigious Japanese Design Award
To design a map of the world is no easy task. Because maps represent the spherical Earth in 2D form, they cannot help but be distorted, which is why Greenland and Antarctica usually look far more gigantic than they really are, while Africa appears vastly smaller than its true size. The AuthaGraph World Map tries to correct these issues, showing the world closer to how it actually is in all its spherical glory.
Question d’Elisabeth Vallet :
your take, Philippe Rekacewicz, Cristina Del Biaggio ?

Jasper Johns. ’Map (Based on Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Air Ccean World), 1967. Hans Namuth and Judith Wechsler, 1990. Distributed by MoMA, Circulating Film Library. From the MoMA description: ’a portrait of the artist at work. The film begins in 1972 with Johns repainting Air Ocean World based on Buckminster Fuller’s dymaxion Map. Johns work is traced over the next eighteen years. His Untitled, 1973, with its cross-hatching, flagstones, and anatomical parts become recurrent motifs, as Johns begins to imbed skulls and severed arms in them. The paintings become more personal as Johns gradually ’drops the reserve’ in his recent series, ’The Seasons’. The film culminates with Johns working on the final state of the etching based on ’The Seasons’. There is no narration as such. Jasper Johns speaks at various points, John Cage reads Johns’ statements, then rearranged through a computerized method based on the I Ching, curator Mark Rosenthal comments on several stages of Johns’ work, and Christopher Ricks reads passages from Beckett’s Foirades/Fizzles.’

Ocean is the title of a 90-minute dance choreographed by Merce Cunningham and first performed by his dance company in 1994. This is one of three working proofs Johns made while developing a lithographic edition of Ocean to benefit the company founded by Cunningham, who is represented in the two portraits. The geometric structure recalls that of Johns’ painting Map (Based on Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Air Ocean World) of 1967–1971. The implied 19-triangle format echoes the 19-part structure of Cunningham’s dance.

Everything you know is a lie, from elevator buttons to maps of the world. When it comes to the latter, there are plenty of illustrations of our planet’s geography that are huge distortions of the truth, particularly the classic Mercator projection.
There have been numerous attempts to right this wrong ever since, but a new map by Tokyo-based artist and architect Hajime Narukawa is definitely the best yet.
Named the AuthaGraphic map, this glorious creation is both scientifically accurate and aesthetically appealing. In fact, it has been so well received that it was just awarded Japan’s prestigious Good Design Grand Award.
No matter what form this map takes, from a conventional, flat rectangle shape to a 3D-folded structure – one that can be tessellated without visible seams – the countries and continents remain proportional to each other, including the often neglected Antarctica.

Economic, social, and demographic trends portend a new world order a decade from now. A massive shift in consumer purchasing power. Seminal breakthroughs in healthcare, transportation, and commerce. A reinvention of urban living. All accelerated by technology innovation.
Building on the bold technology predictions presented by Oracle CEO Mark Hurd in his Oracle OpenWorld keynote address last month, these five broader predictions for 2025 may seem startling at first, but they aren’t so much informed guesses as they are the logical progression of current events. See if you agree:
1. More than a billion people worldwide will have their DNA mapped (and checked every year).
2. Not only will 90% of automobiles be self-driving, but they’ll also be connected to the cloud.
3. Close to 60% of consumer spending will be in the developing world.
4. “Smart cities” will be the rule, not the exception, especially in the largest urban areas.
5. One out of every 10 people will use an internet-shared service at any given time during the day.

For decades, contemporary artist Agnes Denes (b. 1931) has been challenging commonly-held assumptions of what belongs where and how we understand space as it is ‘supposed to be.’ Her work can be described as mathematical, ecological, poetic. Here are a few of her works in which she engages the practice of mapping.
