Earlier this week, al-Barghouthi carried out a drive-by shooting attack near the illegal Israeli settlement of Ofra, injuring seven Israeli settlers, including a 21-year-old pregnant woman, who was in critical condition and delivered the baby prematurely in an emergency procedure.

    • Undercover Israeli Forces Kill A Palestinian Taxi Driver Near Ramallah
      December 13, 2018 2:33 AM
      http://imemc.org/article/undercover-israeli-forces-kill-a-palestinian-taxi-driver-near-ramallah

Undercover Israeli soldiers assassinated, on Wednesday evening, a Palestinian Taxi driver, near Surda village, north of the central West Bank city of Ramallah; the army claimed the Palestinian was allegedly “involved” in the shooting targeting colonialist settlers, last Sunday.

The slain Palestinian has been identified as Saleh Omar Saleh Barghouthi , 29; eyewitnesses said he was driving his taxi when the undercover Israeli soldiers, driving an old commercial Mercedes, ambushed him, and opened fire at him, before abducting him while he was still alive, but severely injured and bleeding.

The army later said the Palestinian died from his wounds in a hospital in occupied Jerusalem.

Eyewitnesses said that the taxi remained in the middle of the road, after the soldiers shot Saleh, and added that a young man, identified as Wa’ad Barghouthi, tried to remove it from the road, but the undercover forces attacked and abducted him too.

Eyewitnesses said the undercover soldiers instantly opened fire at the car after ambushing it, in what appeared to be a clear assassination, not an attempt to abduct and imprison him.

The soldiers also abducted Ala’ Tarifi, who owns the Taxi company, when he tried to ask about Saleh’s condition.

    • B’Tselem investigation: al-Barghouthi was shot point-blank

JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — An investigation by B’Tselem found that, contrary to official Israeli statements, Saleh al-Barghouthi did not try to flee or run anyone over, nor could he have tried: two security vehicles were blocking the taxi he was driving at either end, and he was surrounded by some 10 security personnel who shot him point-blank – an operation resembling an extrajudicial killing. Official attempts to sanction the killing in retrospect ensure no one will be held accountable.

A statement on the investigation said that “On 12 December 2018, at around 6:30 P.M., two Israeli security vehicles blocked the path of a taxi driving along the main road of Surda, a Palestinian village in Ramallah District. Driving the taxi was Saleh al-Barghouthi, 28, husband and father of a 5-year-old boy from the village of Kobar, which lies north of Ramallah. About ten personnel, including Special Police Unit officers, got out of the vehicles, surrounded the taxi and shot al-Barghouthi point-blank. They then pulled the wounded al-Barghouthi out of the taxi, handcuffed him and drove away with him. The IDF notified the family that al-Barghouthi had been critically injured in the incident and died in hospital. According to the Shin Bet (ISA), al-Barghouthi, who was an operative with Hamas’ military wing, was suspected of involvement in the drive-by shooting that took place on 9 December 2018 at the hitch-hiking post near the settlement of Ofra, north of Ramallah. Seven Israelis were injured in the attack, including Shira Ish-Ran, who was seven months pregnant and delivered of her baby in hospital. The baby boy, Amiad Israel Ish-Ran, died three days later.” (...)

    • Israel suspends German-backed construction project in West Bank

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israel suspended a German-backed construction project to build a landfill site for waste disposal in the central occupied West bank district of Ramallah, on Monday.

The Israeli Minister of Environmental Protection, Zeev Elkin, informed the German government that residents of illegal Israeli settlements would also use the planned landfill to dispose of their waste.

The German government rejected the Israeli “proposition” since the project is funded for developing countries such as the occupied West Bank.

Additionally, Germany recognizes these Israeli settlements as illegal under international law.

The German government responded by saying that “the (Israeli) minister decided to undermine the project and deprive the Palestinians from benefiting from the German initiative, which helps solve the problem of dozens of existing dumps in random areas of the occupied West Bank.”

Germany has set a deadline, 1st of October 2018, for obtaining approval from Israel for the project, otherwise it will refrain from transferring the funds allocated for it.

The funds are an estimate of €10 million.

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — An Israeli court on Thursday evening decided to release 21-year-old Nour al-Tamimi on a bail, rejecting an appeal presented by the Israeli military prosecution against her release.

The court rejected the Israeli military prosecutions appeal and decided to release al-Tamimi on a 5,000 shekel ($1,455) bail.

Al-Tamimi was held in Israeli prison for two weeks. She was arrested in mid-December after her cousin, 16-year-old Ahed was detained for slapping and kicking an Israeli soldier during a raid on her hometown of Nabi Saleh in the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah.

Nour was featured in the video next to her cousin Ahed, and was detained seemingly for involvement in the incident, though no charges were brought against her.

Ahed has been indicted on 12 charges, including assaulting an officer and previous accusations of stone throwing. The military court she is being prosecuted in has a 99% conviction rate.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot and reportedly left in a moderate condition after breaking into a home in an illegal Israeli settlement in the central occupied West Bank and carrying out a stabbing attack that left three Israelis dead and one injured Friday night, according to the Israeli army.

An Israeli army spokesperson said an assailant entered a home in the illegal Halamish settlement, also known as Neve Tzuf, and stabbed four Israelis.

Two succumbed to their wounds shortly thereafter and two were hospitalized in a serious condition. A third was later confirmed dead.

The assailant was shot, the spokesperson said. He was identified by Israeli media as Omar al-Abed, between 19 and 20 years old, from the nearby village of Kobar in the northern Ramallah district.

According to Israeli news site Ynet, a 70-year-old man and his son and daughter in their 30s where slain, and their 68-year-old mother badly injured.

The four were reportedly having Shabbat dinner with about 10 members of their family when the attacker broke into the house. Some were able to hide in a separate room and call the police and yell for help. A neighbor, a soldier in the Israeli army, reportedly heard the disturbance, and arrived to the scene and shot and moderately wounded the assailant, according to Ynet.

Israeli media reported that al-Abed wrote on Facebook before carrying out the attack: “I have many dreams and I believe they will come true, I love life and I love to make others happy, but what is my life is when they (Israel) murder women and children and defile our Al-Aqsa.”

The deadly attack took place after three Palestinians were killed — two of them by Israeli police and one reportedly by an Israeli settler — when large-scale civil disobedience demonstrations in Jerusalem erupted into violent clashes earlier on Friday.

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian near the Qalandiya military checkpoint in the central occupied West Bank district of Ramallah on Monday, with the Israeli army claiming the man attempted to carry out a stabbing attack on Israeli soldiers.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that a short while after 5 p.m. “an assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab Israeli forces” that were operating on a road between the illegal Israeli Adam settlement and Israel’s Qalandiya checkpoint that leads to occupied East Jerusalem.

No Israelis were injured in the incident.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified that Palestinian as 23-year-old Bahaa Imad Samir al-Hirbawi from the central West Bank Jerusalem-area village of al-Eizariya.

Israeli soldiers smashed the main door of the building before searching the area and seizing several objects that were inside storage units belonging to student blocs.

  • Israeli forces detain 16 Palestinians over suspicions of starting fires in Israel, West Bank

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Israeli forces detained at least 16 Palestinians across Israel and the occupied West Bank on Thursday and Friday over suspicions of starting fires that erupted in Haifa and have continued to spread for the fourth consecutive day.

Israeli media reported on Friday that three Palestinian workers were detained in the Haifa district over suspicions of arson. The Palestinians had reportedly entered Israel without permits.

Another 11 Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces in Israel and the Jerusalem area.

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank district of Ramallah, Israeli forces detained a Palestinian for allegedly attempting to start a fire near the illegal Israeli settlement of Kochav Yaakov, an Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an.

The spokesperson did not identify the Palestinian detained in Ramallah, however, locals told Ma’an that Sayel Darwish Jarabaa, 60, was detained from the Beitin village in northern Ramallah late Thursday for allegedly attempting to start a fire. Jarabaa is the father of Saji who was killed by Israeli forces two-and-a-half years ago.

Israeli media also reported a detention of a 24-year-old Palestinian from Rahat city in the Negev of southern Israel for alleged “incitement” over a Facebook post reportedly encouraging others to start fires.

Locals identified the detainee as journalist Anas Abu Daabis. According to Israeli media outlet Ynet, Abu Daabis is the son of a senior member of the Islamic Movement in Israel.
However, Israeli media later reported that his detention came after Israeli authorities mistranslated his post, which read “what kind of ignorance and lack of awareness are we facing? Our country is on fire and the Arabs are celebrating!” Abu Daabis was referring to statements made by Palestinians insinuating that the fire was revenge for Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

    • The Infamy of the Palestinian #Elites: An Imminent Split within Fatah?
      http://www.ramzybaroud.net/infamy-palestinian-elites-imminent-split-within-fatah

Dahlan is involved in various “charity projects” including financing mass weddings in impoverished Gaza. But it is not Dahlan’s money that Hamas is seeking; rather the hope that he mediates with Egypt to ease movement on the Rafah-Egypt border.

With a growing clout and rising number of benefactors, Dahlan’s resurrection is assured, but imposing him on an embattled Fatah faction in the West Bank remains uncertain.

To preclude Dahlan’s attempt at regaining his status within Fatah, Abbas’s PA forces in the occupied West Bank have been conducting arrests of Dahlan’s supporters. The latter’s armed men are retaliating and clashes have been reported in various parts of the West Bank.

Moreover, Abbas has called for the seventh Fatah conference to be held sometime later this month, where the Abbas faction within Fatah is likely to rearrange the various committees to ensure Dahlan’s supporters are weakened, if not permanently removed.

Considering Dahlan’s strong support base and his ability to win followers using his access to wealth and regional allies, a move against his followers is likely to backfire, splitting the party, or worse, leading to an armed conflict. Despite Israel’s intentional silence, there are also reports that Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who was tied to Dahlan repeatedly in the past, is keen on ensuring the return of Dahlan at the helm of Fatah.

Tragically, the power struggle rarely involves ordinary Palestinian people, who remain alone facing the Israeli military machine, the growing illegal Jewish settlements, the suffocating siege, while persisting under an unprecedented leadership vacuum.

This is one of the enduring legacies of the Oslo Accords, which divides Palestinians into classes: a powerful class that is subsidised by “donor countries” and is used to serve the interests of the US, Israel and regional powers, and the vast majority of people, barely surviving on handouts and resisting under growing odds.

This strange contradiction has become the shameful reality of Palestine, and regardless of what the power struggle between Abbas and Dahlan brings, most Palestinians will find themselves facing the same dual enemy, military occupation, on the one hand, and their leadership’s own acquiescence and #corruption, on the other.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that a Palestinian “armed with a knife attempted to stab an Israeli soldier guarding a bus stop” near the illegal settlement of Ofra.

She said that Israeli forces shot at the Palestinian, “resulting in his death.”

The army spokesperson said that she was not aware of any Israelis being injured in the case.

Israeli forces reportedly prevented Palestinian medics from approaching the scene, eyewitnesses said, adding that Israeli medical teams did not treat him, leaving him to bleed to death.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the slain youth as Maen Nasser al-Din Abu Qaraa , 23, from the village of al-Mazraa al-Qibliyaa in the Ramallah district.

Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces closed the entrances and the roads to the nearby villages of Silwad town and Ein Yabrud following the killing, preventing Palestinians from going in and out of the two municipalities.

This video of a nighttime raid on the Abu Rahma family in occupied Bil’in in Palestine was posted by journalist Hamde Abu Rahme today. You can see eight heavily-armed and helmeted soldiers exit the Abu Rahma house at the end of the video. Bassem Abu Rahma was killed by Israeli forces with a tear gas canister fired at close range during a peaceful demonstration in 2009. His sister Jawaher Abu Rahma died in 2012 from inhalation of tear gas fired on the village, also during a demonstration.

Seeing the Israeli occupation forces last night, raiding the house of my cousins Bassem and Jawaher abu Rahma, who were murdered by the Israeli occupation forces in cold blood, in peaceful demonstrations and seeing how they wake the family up in the middle of the night, to steal their computers and phones and not letting anyone enter or leave, because they declare it a closed military zone, makes me so deeply mad and sad for all what this family have to go through. I don’t know what to say. It’s hard for me to see all the injustice that my family face by living under the Israeli occupation. It’s hard to see part of your family lose their beloved ones and it’s that’s not the only thing. They can’t even have a peaceful night to sleep, because they were born under the occupation. They are forced to live this life because they stand on their land they refuse to leave. It’s hard for me to see the owners prevented from entering the house to see their children, because there are strangers inside blocking the way and declaring it a closed military zone, when in fact they are vandalising, and stealing computers and phones. They also raided 3 other Palestinian houses in the village where they took their computers and phones as well. But this is the reality in Palestine, you may not know about. This is the life under the Israeli occupation in Palestine.

    • Israeli forces raid homes of Bilin activists, confiscate computers

RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Israeli forces raided the village of Bilin in the central occupied West bank district of Ramallah early Wednesday morning, searching several houses and confiscating cell phones and computers belonging to activists from the local popular resistance committee.

Coordinator of the Bilin Popular Resistance Committee against the Wall and Settlements Rateb Abu Rahmeh said that Israeli forces raided several houses including his, the home of his brother Abdullah Abu Rahmeh, as well as the homes of head of the village council Bassil Mansour, Muhammad al-Khatib, in addition to the homes of Ahmad Abu Rahmeh and his brother Ashraf Abu Rahmeh.

Abu Rahmeh said that the raids frightened children in the houses.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an they were looking into reports of the raid.

The committee condemned the raid of the activists’ homes, adding that Israeli actions would not stop popular activists from continuing their weekly marches against Israel’s separation wall and illegal Israeli settlements.

Residents of Bilin, one of the most active villages in peaceful organized opposition against Israeli policies, have protested every Friday for 11 consecutive years, and have often been met with tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets, and stun grenades from Israeli forces.

  • Palestinian shot dead, 3 Israeli soldiers injured in suspected car ramming attack
    May 3, 2016 7:43 P.M. (Updated: May 3, 2016 9:25 P.M.)
    http://maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=771389

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — A Palestinian was shot and killed and three Israeli soldiers were injured after a suspected car ramming attack occurred at a junction near the illegal Israeli settlement of Dolev northwest of Ramallah in the central occupied West Bank.

According to an Israeli army spokesperson, the assailant rammed a car into three Israeli soldiers at the junction, and the driver was later shot.

Witnesses told Ma’an a Palestinian was quickly driving a mid-sized truck on a road between the villages of Beitunia and Ein Arik and hit three Israeli soldiers with his vehicle while they were crossing the street. The witnesses said it appeared the driver hit the soldiers by accident.

The driver fled the scene “fearing for his life,” witnesses said. Israeli forces chased him and a separate unit erected a barrier further down the road.

Israeli forces fired on him repeatedly and he was left bleeding from several bullet wounds inside his car without receiving treatment until he died, before Israeli forces transferred the body to an unknown location, witnesses said.

The Palestinian was later identified as Ahmed Riyad Abd al-Aziz Shehada , 36, from the Qalandiya refugee camp in the Ramallah district.

According to Israel’s emergency medical services, one of the Israeli soldiers was injured severely, and two moderately. After the incident, they were quickly evacuated to Dolev before a helicopter took them to Jerusalem’s Hadassah University Hospital for treatment, Israeli media reported.

Israeli forces have since closed the main road in Ramallah and erected roadblocks in the area, preventing movement in and out of the town, locals said.

  • Army Terror Against the Palestinians That Journalists Only Yawn at - Haaretz -
    Amira Hass Feb 17, 2016
    http://www.haaretz.com/opinion/.premium-1.703805

“We’re not allowed to talk to you,” the soldiers said Monday, offering instead a piece of paper written in Hebrew with an appeal in the name of the “Military Commander, Binyamin Sector.” On Sunday evening they invaded the home of a family in the village of Beit Ur al-Tahta, southwest of Ramallah. They ordered the family to take their living-room furniture out of the room, placed a bright yellow chemical toilet in the yard, and hung two Israeli flags on the roof.

Eleven people live in that well-kept house on a hill in the southern part of the village. Five or six soldiers have ensconced themselves in the living room and occasionally go up to the roof or into the garden. The women say that even though the soldiers put a portable toilet in the yard, they urinate off the balcony.

Turning a Palestinian residence into a military position is a yawn for journalists. A yawn represented by the failure to report; by the lack of public interest. Children’s fear of rifles, the disruption of family life and violent invasive acts have become a natural norm in a state where settlers’ needs define everything.

“Dear residents, recently a number of attempts by young people to attack Israeli citizens in your area have occurred,” states the piece of paper the soldiers handed out. “In response, military forces have been forced to act in the village to prevent the continuation of danger to the citizens’ security.

“The military activity of the military forces in the village is intended to reduce the number of violent incidents against Israeli citizens traveling on roads and living in the area, to protect the security of the region, not to disrupt your routine.”

Routine: Military jeeps keep entering the village when the drivers feel like it. Tear gas and stun grenades. Military positions all around. Wide Route 443, built on the land of the village and other villages in the Ramallah district, but forbidden for Palestinians to travel on. The road and its branches, which connect the coastal region to Jerusalem and the settlements (Givat Ze’ev, Ramot, and others), sketch a wide strip inside the West Bank that has in effect been emptied of Palestinians save for laborers who work in the settlements. This is how the natural continuum between Ramallah and its suburbs, and the villages north and south of the road, is broken.

Routine: 36 percent of the village’s 5,650 dunams are in Area B (where Israel permits the Palestinian Authority to plan and build), and the rest – 3,575 dunams – is in Area C, under exclusive Israeli civilian and military control. For the common soldier, C is the State of Israel, and this is apparent in Beit Ur al-Tahta, a synonym for the ban on Palestinian construction, the ban on paving and improving agricultural roads, or the ban on refusal to expand master plans.

Even this onerous routine was disrupted last Thursday. A combined force of the army and Civil Administration equipped with a bulldozer managed to enforce the Area C laws within two hours. In a farmed wadi south of the village they destroyed an ancient cistern rehabilitated by the Palestinian Agriculture Ministry, as well as a planted plot and a stone fence.

On a hill planted with olive trees in the northern part of the village, they destroyed a small, old concrete structure that was used for storing tools, and at the entrance to the village they confiscated a prefab room that a car-parts firm used as an office and poured sand on five junked cars. They confiscated a parked backhoe and a backhoe blade they found on the hill above, and for dessert they destroyed an iron gate and rummaged through an empty plot on the side of the road.

“We believe that you too want to live in peace and without any military activity in the village and in your homes,” the military commander concludes on that piece of paper. “Therefore, remove those who carry out terrorist acts and violence. In a joint action that will prevent terrorist activities, we will reach peace in the region.”

But in the dictionary of the residents (and mine), destruction of cisterns, theft of land and livelihood, and invasions of homes are acts of terror.

  • The Invisible Walls of #Occupation: #Burqah, #Ramallah District, A case study

This report concerns the village of Burqah, Ramallah District. A rather unremarkable village, Burqah has never taken center stage in the fight against the occupation, and has not been subjected to extreme punitive measures. In fact, we chose to focus on Burqah precisely because it is unexceptional, as a case in point demonstrating what life under the occupation is like for residents of Palestinian villages. It is a small, picturesque village, surrounded by fields. Like many other villages, it endures severe travel restrictions which isolate it from its surroundings. It is also subject to massive land-grabs and stifling planning, all of which have turned it into a derelict, crowded and backward village with half its population living at or below the poverty line.
