Openly Licensed Images, Audio and More | Openverse
    ▻https://openverse.org

    Projet »sponso« par WP.

Openverse is a tool that allows openly licensed and #public_domain works to be discovered and used by everyone.

Openverse searches across more than 300 million #images from open #APIs and the Common Crawl dataset. It goes beyond simple search to aggregate results across multiple public repositories into a single catalog, and facilitates reuse through features like machine-generated tags and one-click attribution.

For many years, #Creative_Commons has offered its users a dedicated search portal for searching platforms that have #CC licensing filters built in. In fact, this is still maintained at oldsearch.creativecommons.org.

For users of the legacy CC Meta Search site, the “External Sources” feature on Openverse will look familiar. The goal was to ensure that the functionality is not lost, but is updated and embedded within our new search engine for openly licensed content. In addition, the “External Sources” feature builds on this functionality, allowing us to quickly add new external sources as we discover them, and support new content types in the future, as we expand.

Online Map Leads Archaeologist to Maya Discovery
    ▻https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/08/science/archaeology-lidar-maya.html

But #lidar maps are expensive. Takeshi Inomata, an archaeologist at the University of Arizona, recently spent $62,000 on a map that covered 35 square miles, and even was deeply discounted. So he was thrilled last year when he made a major discovery using a lidar map he had found online, in the #public_domain, entirely for free.

In the course of 1948, the lives of the authors Sergej Eisenstein, Louis Jean Lumière, Marie-Elisabeth Belpaire, Jacques Feyder, Cissy van Marxveldt and many others came to an end. Seventy years later, in 2019, the intellectual property protection on their oeuvre expires. Finally, their works enter the Public Domain and are from now on available for reuse for everyone. The Tale of Beatrix Potter | The Public Domain Review
    ▻http://publicdomainreview.org/2014/07/23/the-tale-of-beatrix-potter

    https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2929/14522003519_46e13fd200_o.jpg

    Her appeal is so powerful that museums hold her in permanent exhibition – and some of them even commemorate her solely. Hollywood has trawled through her life, if somewhat on tiptoe. The great and the good have acknowledged her influence and the affection she inspires. Pottery, apparel, wallpaper – all kinds of domestic accoutrements bear her quaint, unthreatening drawings; her inescapably fluffy image has driven a licensing industry that has been worth millions. Yet Beatrix Potter was a sharp-edged, and reclusive woman, serious and complex, and her “nursery” reputation does her scant justice; she was much more than a “mere” children’s writer. Which, however, is where and how her famed “product” began – with the famous letter from Beatrix aged 27 to Noel Moore, aged 6, the little son of her final governess;

    Sep 4th 93
My dear Noel, I don’t know what to write to you, so I shall tell you a story about four little rabbits whose names were – Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail – and Peter. They lived with their mother in a sand bank under the root of a big fir tree…

She called it a “picture letter.” In among the words she had sketched each character in the tale, with Peter unquestionably the perkiest: he’s the only one standing upright. As adults’ novelists do, she had taken him from life – Peter Rabbit was based on a Belgian buck, she’d given him the name “Peter Piper” and described him thus: “Whatever the shortcomings of his fur, and his ears and toes, his disposition was uniformly amiable and his temper unfailingly sweet.”

William P. Gottlieb Collection | Library of Congress
    ▻https://www.loc.gov/collections/jazz-photography-of-william-p-gottlieb/about-this-collection

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/97/Ahmet_M._Ertegun%2C_Duke_Ellington%2C_William_P._Gottlieb%2C_Nesuhi_Ertegun%2C_and_Dave_Stewart%2C_William_P._Gottlieb's_home%2C_Maryland%2C_1941_%28Delia_Potofsky_Gottlieb%29.jpg

Ahmet M. Ertegun, Duke Ellington, William P. Gottlieb, Nesuhi Ertegun and Dave Stewart at William P. Gottlieb’s home, Maryland, 1941 (by Delia Potofsky Gottlieb)

The collection consists of jazz photographs taken by writer-photographer William P. Gottlieb, from 1938 to 1948, the “Golden Age of Jazz” when swing reached its peak and modern jazz developed. While on assignment for the Washington Post, Down Beat magazine, and Record Changer, Gottlieb photographed and interviewed #jazz pioneers primarily in Washington, D.C., and New York City. A skilled craftsman, the self-taught photographer captured the personalities of jazz musicians in a sensitive, storytelling manner. The collection is an important contribution to the documentation of American culture during a time when jazz music thrived.

    Gottlieb’s photographs are perhaps the most widely reproduced images of jazz musicians, such as #Louis_Armstrong, #Duke_Ellington, #Charlie_Parker, #Billie_Holiday, #Dizzy_Gillespie, #Earl_Hines, #Thelonious_Monk, #Stan_Kenton, #Ray_McKinley, #Benny_Goodman, #Coleman_Hawkins, #Ella_Fitzgerald, and #Benny_Carter.
    ...
The online collection provides access to digital images of all sixteen hundred negatives and transparencies, approximately one hundred annotated contact prints, and over two hundred selected photographic prints that show Gottlieb’s cropping, burning, and dodging preferences. One can follow the artist’s work process by examining first a raw negative, then an annotated contact print, and finally a finished, published product.

Pictured above is our top pick of those whose works will, on 1st January 2015, be entering the public domain in many countries around the world. Of the eleven featured, eight will be entering the public domain in countries with a ‘life plus 70 years’ copyright term (e.g. most European Union members, Brazil, Israel, Nigeria, Russia, Turkey, etc.) and three in countries with a ‘life plus 50 years’ copyright term (e.g. Canada, New Zealand, and many countries in Asia and Africa). As always it’s a sundry and diverse rabble who’ve assembled for our graduation photo – including two giants of 20th-century abstract art, the creator of one of the world’s most reproduced paintings, the creator of one of the world’s best-loved children’s books, and the creator of the world’s most read about, and watched, Secret Service agents.
