To see the election outcome through the prism of an outright Hezbollah victory is reductionist and misses the point. Earlier this week, Israel carried out its largest military operation targeting Syrian soil in decades, action which comes on the heels of Trump declaring that the United States will no longer adhere to its commitments under the Iran nuclear deal. The tacit argument being made by those touting the notion that Hezbollah has seized control in Lebanon, and explicitly by many Israeli political and military leaders, is that the Lebanese state is a legitimate target in any future conflict between Israel and Hezbollah . Apart from engaging in lazy and incomplete analysis, there can be no other informed interpretation of attempts to promulgate the flawed assertion that Lebanon is now, suddenly, under the control of a single political party.

With Lebanon still waiting for official results to be announced by the Interior Ministry after polls closed Sunday evening, all eyes were Monday morning on unofficial results reported by local media outlets.
These results have the Future Movement winning over 20 seats; the Amal Movement, 16; Hezbollah, 13 ; and LF, 15.
The Free Patriotic Movement has reportedly taken 17 seats in Parliament, in a result that would see FPM leader Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil become a lawmaker for the first time, after failing in his 2009 bid.

In the vacuum of information, theories – some more likely than others – have sprung up. These are the four main contenders:
Mass hypoxia event
The official theory, adopted by both the Malaysian government and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, is that the passengers and crew of MH370 were incapacitated by an unknown “unresponsive crew/ hypoxia event”. Hypoxia is a deficiency of oxygen.

Fire or accident
In the immediate aftermath of the disappearance, former pilot Christopher Goodfellow speculated that an electrical fire broke out on board. He said this explained the first turn towards Malaysia as Shah was searching for an emergency landing strip. He believes the fire then incapacitated Shah and the cabin crew, leaving the plane to fly south on autopilot.
Patrick Smith, another pilot, has cast doubt on the fire theory, saying it was unlikely MH370 could have continued for six hours on autopilot after a major fire. Officials believe Shah was unconcious, but have not offered any theories as to why or when this occurred.

The rogue pilot
Byron Bailey, a former RAAF trainer and captain with Emirates, believes the plane was under the control of its captain as part of a deliberate descent into the Indian Ocean.
This would radically alter the current search operation – and potentially explain why the plane has not been found. Current and previous searches assumed the plane dived steeply and suddenly, with nobody at the helm, near the location of the seventh handshake.
But if Shah was conscious, he could have manoeuvred the plane in a long, slow glide, travelling almost 200km further south. This also would have kept the plane more intact, with less debris.

A northern landing
Yet another theory says the plane is not near Australia at all, but rather to the north of Malaysia.
This theory stems from the way satellite data is calculated. After MH370 turned back towards Malaysia, its last known military radar point showed it travelling slightly north-west towards India.

Photo evidence
Other armchair investigators have claimed to have discovered photo evidence of debris that places MH370 in various other locations, but all have been discredited.
On Monday, Peter McMahon, an Australian investigator, told the Daily Star he had discovered the plane on Google Maps near Mauritius and submitted photo evidence to the ATSB.
But the ATSB pointed out his images were more than 10 years old and predated the plane’s disappearance.
“The images sent to ATSB by Mr McMahon were captured on 6 November 2009, more than four years before the flight disappeared,” a spokesperson for the ATSB said.

Reports say Boeing in 2006 was awarded a US patent for a system that, once activated, could take control of a commercial aircraft away from the pilot or flight crew in the event of a hijacking.
There is no evidence it has ever been used in airliners due to safety concerns.

The United States assassinated Pakistan’s first PM, Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, more than sixty years ago, according to US State Department documents.
Quoting the declassified State Department documents, Pakistan Today reported on Friday that Khan was murdered because of his refusal to use his office for securing oil contracts in neighboring Iran for US corporations.
According to the report, Khan said he would neither use his friendship with officials in Tehran for dishonest purposes nor interfere in personal affairs of Iran.
In addition, Khan also called on Washington to vacate air bases in Pakistan which US was using against the Soviet Union, upon which then-US President Harry S Truman threatened the PM with dire consequences.
According to the documents, following these developments, the CIA began to search for an assassin to kill Khan.

In Bangladesh, right wing religious groups are demanding the removal of a sari-clad sculpture of the Lady Justice in front of the Supreme court. They have threatened a countrywide movement from February 24 if their demands are not met by authorities.
The sculpture was created from stainless steel by renowned artist Mrinal Hoque and is scheduled to be officially opened in April this year. The statue is currently in position outside the court but is still being decorated.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday that Syria’s return to the Arab League would allow the organisation to play a role in finding a political solution to the country’s conflict.
“The League could play a more important, more effective role if the Syrian government was part of the organisation,” Lavrov, whose country is a key ally of the Damascus regime and also a broker in peace efforts, told a press conference in the Emirati capital.
He said Syria was a “legitimate” member of the United Nations and yet “can not take part in discussions inside the Arab League”.
“This does not help our joint (peace) efforts,” said Lavrov.
But Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who was also at the press conference, ruled out an early return of Syria to the Cairo-based organisation.

Turkish warplanes carried out air strikes on the Syrian city of al-Bab held by ISIS on Friday, the military said in a statement, after four Turkish soldiers were killed in the area over the past two days.
The air strikes shortly before 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) destroyed buildings believed to be used by the radical militant group, the military said in a statement. The strikes were part of Turkey’s “Euphrates Shield” operation, launched in August to try to push ISIS and Kurdish militia fighters from the border.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Thursday that Turkey would retaliate after three of its soldiers were killed in what the military said was a suspected Syrian air strike. Another soldier was later killed in clashes with ISIS, the military said earlier on Friday.

The idea for his book is rooted in what has been Iraq’s grim reality for years. Saadawi recounted two specific incidents that shocked him and inspired him to write “Frankenstein in Baghdad.”
One was in the city of Baqouba when Al-Qaeda in Iraq – nowadays Daesh (ISIS) – kidnapped a man, killed him, and chopped his body into pieces. “They dropped each piece in a different part of Baqouba ... When the city woke up, each neighborhood saw a different body part,” he said. “They made the whole city see the body simultaneously. What criminal genius!”
The other moment that stuck with him was also at the height of last decade’s civil war, when hospitals were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of bodies being brought in after bombings.
The fridges were overflowing and bodies simply lined the corridors. Saadawi told of how one exhausted forensic team “lost their humanity.”
“One day someone came asking about his brother ... they told him that all the bodies had already been collected by their families, except for these pieces,” he said. “There were mismatched, unclaimed ... body parts and they told him to assemble a man from them and take it away.”

Deux bateaux légers de la marine américaine, avec à leur bord 10 marins, ont dérivé dans les eaux territoriales iraniennes et ont été appréhendés par Téhéran, mardi 12 janvier.
Les Etats-Unis ont obtenu de l’Iran l’assurance que les marins étaient « en sécurité » et pourraient « rapidement » poursuivre leur voyage, a indiqué le porte-parole de la Maison Blanche.
Selon un autre responsable américain, le secrétaire d’Etat John Kerry a été en contact téléphonique avec son homologue iranien Mohammad Javad Zarif sitôt qu’il a eu vent de l’incident pour tenter de trouver une issue. Les deux diplomates ont noué, au fil des longues négociations sur le nucléaire, des relations personnelles malgré l’interruption, il y a 35 ans, des relations diplomatiques entre leurs deux pays.
Le commandement américain a perdu le contact avec les deux bateaux alors que ces derniers effectuaient une patrouille, de routine selon Washington, entre le Koweït et Bahreïn. Aucune explication n’a été fournie sur les raisons pour lesquelles les navires se sont retrouvés dans les eaux iraniennes. Un responsable américain, toujours sous couvert d’anonymat, a évoqué l’hypothèse d’une panne touchant l’un des deux navires, les faisant dériver tous deux vers l’île iranienne de Farsi, au milieu du Golfe persique.
Vu la nature des bateaux retenus (Riverine Command Boat) et le profil particulièrement bas des réactions états-uniennes, il est difficile de ne pas penser immédiatement à une infiltration ou une covert action…

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Public Relations Department said in a statement on Wednesday that the US sailors in custody of Iran have been released in the international waters.
The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and the French Navy’s Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier were present in the region when the sailors were detained and the US aircraft carrier had some nervous but passive air and naval reactions which were controlled powerfully and calm returned to the region, the statement added.
The US sailors had both light and half-heavy weapons with themselves, when arrested, it said.
The statement noted that US political officials in their repeated contacts with Iranian officials called the action as unintentional and called for the release of the marines.
The US marines were detained and questioned about their presence in Iran’s territorial waters in the IRGC naval base in the region, it said.
IRGC statement underlined that after technical and operational investigations of the case and in coordination with political and national security decision makers, the marines were released.
IRGC reiterated that the marines were released because they had entered Iran’s territorial waters unintentionally and they have apologized for their illegal action.
Americans guaranteed not to repeat such mistakes again, the statement said.
IRGC underlined that Iran’s navy is ready to powerfully make any sacrifice in defense of Iran’s sea borders in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

The drama in the Gulf, which the U.S. government had initially hoped to keep under wraps, became public knowledge just hours before President Barack Obama was due to give his annual State of the Union address in Congress.
Kerry learned of the detention of the sailors in their two small craft at 12:30 p.m. EST (1730 GMT), as he and Defense Secretary Ash Carter met with their Filipino counterparts on the State Department’s eighth floor.
Kerry almost immediately excused himself and went to his seventh floor office. As it happened, he already had a call scheduled with Zarif at about 12.45 EST.
Appealing for the sailors’ quick release, Kerry told Zarif: “We can make this into what will be a good story for both of us,” according to a senior State Department official. He repeated that message in follow-up calls, the official said.
Looming large was the nuclear deal, which both men have invested so much in and striven to protect. In Washington, the deal has come under sustained attack from majority Republicans in Congress who have accused Obama of weakness and say the Iranians are not to be trusted.
In Tehran, the stakes were no less high. Formal implementation of the nuclear deal is expected to begin within days, giving Iran billions of dollars in relief from economic sanctions in return for curbs on its nuclear activities.

The two RCBs were scheduled to conduct an underway refueling with the USCGC Monomoy in international waters at approximately 2 p.m. (GMT). At approximately 2:10 p.m. (GMT) NAVCENT received a report that the RCBs were being queried by Iranians. At approximately 2:29 p.m. (GMT) NAVCENT was advised of degraded communications with the RCBs. At 2:45 p.m. (GMT) NAVCENT was notified of a total loss of communications with the RCBs. Immediately, NAVCENT initiated an intensive search and rescue operation using both air and naval assets including aircraft from USS Harry S. Truman and the U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Coast Guard, U.K. Royal Navy and U.S. Navy surface vessels.
At the time of the incident, two carrier strike groups were operating nearby. USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group was 45 miles southeast of Farsi Island and Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group was 40 miles north of Farsi Island. NAVCENT attempted to contact Iranian military units operating near Farsi Island by broadcasting information regarding their search and rescue effort over marine radio, and separately notified Iranian coast guard units via telephone about the search for their personnel. At 6:15 p.m. (GMT), U.S. Navy cruiser USS Anzio received a communication from the Iranians that the RCB Sailors were in Iranian custody and were “safe and healthy.”
NAVCENT’s initial operational reports showed that while in transit from Kuwait to Bahrain the RCBs deviated from their planned course on their way to the refueling. The command investigation will determine what caused the change in course and why the RCBs entered into Iranian territorial waters in the vicinity of Farsi Island.
At some point one RCB had indications of a mechanical issue in a diesel engine which caused the crews to stop the RCBs and begin troubleshooting. As the RCBs travel together, the second RCB also stopped. This stop occurred in Iranian territorial waters, although it’s not clear the crew was aware of their exact location. While the RCBs were stopped and the crew was attempting to evaluate the mechanical issue, Iranian boats approached the vessels.

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s son, Hannibal, sources said Sunday.
The sources told The Daily Star a mob headed by Suleiman Assad kidnapped Hannibal in Syria and handed him over to an armed group in Lebanon.
They said Hannibal was held for a few days near the eastern city of Baalbek before locals became aware of the kidnapping, which eventually compelled the abductors to release him.
In a video broadcast on Lebanese TV Friday, Hannibal was seen appealing for more information concerning the 1978 disappearance of Lebanese cleric Sheikh Musa al-Sadr.
He was later handed over to the Internal Security Forces’ Information Branch in Beirut through unidentified intermediaries.

A Shiite parliamentarian in Kuwait on Monday demanded to grill the foreign minister over the Gulf state’s participation in Saudi-led air strikes against Yemen’s Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies.
“Kuwait’s air force has taken part in the military operations without parliament being informed,” Abdulhameed Dashti said.
He said this was a breach of the constitution which bans launching an offensive war or the government declaring a defensive war without informing parliament.
Dashti accused Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Sabah, a senior member of the ruling family, of responsiblity for the emirate’s involvement in the Yemen conflict.

A group of about 50 women blocked the main Tripoli-Minyeh highway in north Lebanon for a couple hours in the early morning. Around, 11 a.m., the same women staged a protest outside the Interior Ministry in Beirut.
Police in riot gear observed the demonstrators with caution.
The protesters’ stance echoed the demands of Islamist inmates locked up in Roumieh’s Block D, including access to mobile phones, television sets and computers.
The same families had also protested Monday in Tripoli.
The families and inmates say they want to be able to communicate with their families, but authorities have said that the prisoners use the tools to help plan attacks with jihadis outside the prison.
Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk has said that Roumieh inmates were in contact with the suicide bombers who attacked the Tripoli neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen in January.
The protest comes days after Islamist inmates briefly held 20 guards hostage following a riot in Roumieh on Friday. Several mattresses had been set ablaze, causing a fire that spread to the second floor of the facility.
Their main demand was for them to be moved back to the notorious Block B, which is currently under repair work.
Inmates had enjoyed relative autonomy in Block B and had prevented security forces from entering the building for years before they were transferred to Block D in a massive January crackdown.

The Lebanese Army arrested the son of prominent sheikh Dai al-Islam al-Shahal, the founder of the Salafist Movement in north Lebanon, a security source said Friday.
The source told The Daily Star that an Army Intelligence patrol arrested Jaafar Shahal around midnight in the neighborhood of Zahrieh in the northern port city of Tripoli.
The Tripoli-based Dai al-Shahal, himself wanted by authorities for weapons possession, has acknowledged the arrest.
Shahal said in remarks published last month that the arrest warrant against him belittled the entire Sunni community and would have consequences.

Starting Tuesday, Lebanon will be hit by another major storm that will continue until Thursday afternoon, according to the Meteorological Department at the Rafik Hariri International Airport.
The thunderstorm will get stronger starting in the afternoon, the department told The Daily Star, adding that signs of the storm would be felt Tuesday morning.
Temperatures are expected to range between 10 and 24 degrees Celsius along the coast Tuesday, 5 and 15 degrees Celsius in the mountains, 5 and -1 in the Cedars and 6 and 18 degrees Celsius in the Bekaa Valley.
Snow will fall at an altitude between 1,500 meters and 1,600 meters above sea level, the meteorological department said.
