The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 falls on Wednesday, July 2, 2014. The act paved the way for affirmative action and further desegregation in schools and workplaces across the country. In Denver the African American community faced harsh discrimination and violence throughout their struggle to achieve racial equality. With photos from The Denver Post archive, here is a glimpse of what it was like to be black in Denver at the time of the civil rights movement and following the signing of the act.

What’s the best way to cook with cannabis? It’s not like an oregano or basil – you have to heat it up to extract a flavor. You could certainly use a cannabis-infused butter, which works particularly well for baking, but Chef Laurent also infuses weed with coconut oil for excellent sauteing and cannabis-based pestos.

The Denver Post, on February 15th, ran an Associated Press article entitled Homeland Security aims to buy 1.6b rounds of ammo, so far to little notice. It confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security has issued an open purchase order for 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition. As reported elsewhere, some of this purchase order is for hollow-point rounds, forbidden by international law for use in war, along with a frightening amount specialized for snipers. Also reported elsewhere, at the height of the Iraq War the Army was expending less than 6 million rounds a month. Therefore 1.6 billion rounds would be enough to sustain a hot war for 20+ years. In America.

Add to this perplexing outré purchase of ammo, DHS now is showing off its acquisition of heavily armored personnel carriers, repatriated from the Iraqi and Afghani theaters of operation

More than 170 countries agreed Friday to accelerate adoption of a global ban on the export of hazardous wastes, including old electronics, to developing countries.
