In May 1988, the Times of India (ToI) reported on an issue riling readers of Pakistan Times, a now defunct newspaper that was then owned by the Pakistani government. This was the name of the Indian Ocean which they felt was unfairly linked to this country simply because “by calling itself India the country seemed to have become heir to the entire history of the subcontinent.”

One writer felt that the fairer approach would be to limit the use of India up to August 1947 and after that “what remained outside Pakistan and Bangladesh should be called Bharat.” But since the Indian government had not been so obliging, writers felt Pakistan should not go along with this historical and geographic appropriation and should stop using the term “Indian Ocean’.

Hillary Clinton on Friday released her 2015 tax returns, which showed the Democratic presidential nominee and her husband had $10.75 million in income that year and paid an effective federal tax rate of 34.2 per cent.

In 2015, the Clintons made $1 million in charitable contributions, mostly to the Clinton Foundation; former President Bill Clinton brought in nearly $5.3 million in speaking fees; and the former secretary of state reported income of $3 million from publisher Simon & Schuster for her book on her tenure at the State Department.

LEH/NEW DELHI: Indian and Chinese troops recently had a face-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh, the same area where People’s Liberation Army had pitched camps in April, 2013 that had led to a three-week long stalemate.

According to officials in the know of developments, the Chinese troops had built a temporary hut in Burtse, North of Ladakh, which was subsequently demolished by the ITBP and Army jawans yesterday.

Formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Gumenyuk’s native region of Ivano-Frankivsk was under Polish rule when he was born but would change hands several times over the course of the 20th century.
In 1939, “when the Soviets arrived, we really thought that our brothers had come to liberate us from Poland,” he recalled.

At that time, Ukrainians hung two flags in their villages: their yellow-and-blue national one and the red one for the Soviet troops.

“But after a couple of weeks, they started looking for those who had hung the yellow-and-blue flags and arresting them,” Gumenyuk said.

Hundreds of thousands of western Ukrainians are said to have been killed or sent to Soviet prison camps in the ensuing repression.

“When the Germans arrived we also saw them as liberators,” Gumenyuk said.

In September 1945, he was wounded in fighting against the Red Army and ended up a prisoner of the Soviets.

He spent the next 11 years in a Siberian prison camp in the far northern city of Norilsk, thousands of kilometres from his home in western Ukraine.

KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are locked in a new energy row, this time over a jointly operated offshore natural gas field also shared with Iran, a newspaper reported today.

Citing Kuwaiti sources, Al-Rai newspaper said work at the Dorra field had been halted due to differences between the two countries over the routing of the gas they extract.

The report said Saudi Arabia wants any Dorra gas to be pumped through Khafji and then divided between the two countries, and that Kuwait insists it should take its share directly from the field.

Kuwait shares separately with Iran and Saudi Arabia the Dorra gas field, whose recoverable reserves are estimated at some 220 billion cubic metres.

Development of the part jointly owned with the Saudis has been frozen for a year, according to Al-Rai.

The row comes a month after production at the offshore Khafji oilfield in a neutral zone between the two Arab states was halted last month, with Kuwaiti officials saying it was due to technical issues.

However, trade unions and media outlets in Kuwait said that Saudi Arabia stopped production unilaterally because of differences between the two countries.

Khafji is capable of producing 311,000 barrels of oil per day.

Kuwait and Iran have been involved in unsuccessful talks for more than 10 years to demarcate their maritime border in the area.

The Gulf emirate is rich in oil but needs the Dorra field because it lacks sufficient supplies of natural gas.
