A campaign in Japan aimed at high school girls provides special tin buttons for them to wear while riding the train to deter groping and other forms of sexual assault.

The Chikan Prevention Activities Center (痴漢抑止活動センター) organizes the campaign, which is in its third year. The word Japanese word “chikan” is used to describe both the act of groping as well as the gropers themselves.

The buttons feature a variety of messages that remind readers that chikan is a crime and that the wearer will not endure the assault quietly.

The aim of the “chikan deterrent button” is show how much [the people wearing it] hate chikan. It’s an effort to make potential chikans to understand they must stop sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Japan was given a preview of the stealthy JASSM-ER “standoff” missiles it is considering purchasing after U.S. officials said B-1B bombers launched the weapons Friday for the first time in combat during strikes on the Syrian regime.

The new Lockheed Martin Corp. air-launched cruise missile made its battlefield debut in the strikes when 19 of them were fired outside Syrian airspace by two B-1Bs that had targeted the Barzah Research and Development Center located on the outskirts of Damascus.

Men averaged 72.14 years of healthy living, almost a year more than the previous survey in 2013, while women averaged 74.79 years, up just over six months. A health ministry official attributed the rise to more people placing importance on better nutrition and exercise.

LONDON – Japan was placed at 114th in the World Economic Forum’s global gender equality rankings for 2017 released Thursday, down from 111th last year and the worst standing among the Group of Seven major economies.

The fall chiefly reflected a decline in the political empowerment of women in the country, the Geneva-based think tank said.

Vietnam has begun dredging work on a disputed reef in the South China Sea, Reuters news service reported Thursday, a move that will likely anger China, which claims virtually the entire sea.

A commercial satellite image taken on Nov. 30 shows activity on Vietnam-controlled Ladd Reef on the southwestern fringe of the Spratly group of islands, according to the report.

Several vessels can be seen in a newly dug channel between the lagoon and open sea, it said, quoting analysts as saying that similar dredging work has been the precursor to more extensive construction on other reefs.

Vietnam has already constructed a lighthouse on the reef as well as a facility that houses a small contingent of soldiers. Besides China, Taiwan also claims the reef.

Japan’s efforts to bridge the gender divide have failed to translate into substantial change, with the nation sliding to 111th in a global inequality ranking report released Wednesday.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2016, an annual benchmarking exercise by the World Economic Forum (WEF), found that despite Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s push for women to play a greater role in society, the nation had done little to make more use of its female talent since its ranking at 101st last year.

More than 40 years after she became the first woman to climb the world’s highest mountain, Junko Tabei has died at age 77, according to Japanese media. Tabei was just 4’9", but she was a giant in mountaineering, as the first woman to conquer the “Seven Summits” — the tallest peak on each continent.

Even before she confronted the world’s tallest peak, Tabei had already defied Japanese society’s ideas of how women should behave by leaving her 3-year-old daughter with her husband and heading to Nepal to tackle Everest. Just six years earlier, she had founded the Ladies Climbing Club (slogan: “Let’s go on an overseas expedition by ourselves.”).

Her all-female climbing club was a first in Japan; Tabei started it in part because of how she was treated by male climbers.

“Back in 1970s Japan, it was still widely considered that men were the ones to work outside and women would stay at home,” Tabei told the Japan Times in 2012. “Even women who had jobs — they were asked just to serve tea. So it was unthinkable for them to be promoted in their workplaces.”

Major travel agency H.I.S. Co. has been forced to cancel a sales campaign offering customers the chance to travel with “beautiful girls” from the University of Tokyo after an online backlash.

Hours after announcing the campaign on Wednesday, the agency was hit with a wave of critical comments that said it was a form of sexual harassment.

The company launched the travel campaign, offering five groups of winners the opportunity to travel abroad with female students from Japan’s top university.

Japan’s tourism agency has asked spas to welcome foreign tourists with tattoos, in the hope that a relaxed policy will allow more visitors to enjoy the traditional baths.

The unwritten ban on tattooed people bathing in onsen comes from a strong association in Japan between body art and criminality. Operators should consider, however, that non-Japanese wear tattoos for decorative, cultural or religious reasons, a tourism official said Thursday, according to the Japan Times.

The agency proposed a series of solutions onsen might try to help respect local customs while welcoming foreigners, including stickers to cover tattoos and separate bathing times for visitors with ink.

The Japanese-born, New York-based multimedia and performance artist takes aim at society’s assumptions about commerce and culture using works rooted in intensive research. This time, her target is the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Inoue has been at work since February of this year on a project she calls “Rice Paper” (“Kome Kami”), a wall-mounted bilingual newspaper addressing the trade agreement currently being negotiated by 12 Pacific Rim nations, including Japan and the United States. The deal would reduce tariffs on goods such as rice, cars and beef, and alter other policies to encourage international trade. Despite lagging negotiations and stiff opposition from Japanese farmers and other stakeholders, it remains a priority for both U.S. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Inoue, however, is convinced the TPP would harm Japanese society.

“Who benefits?” the 51-year-old artist asks on a recent afternoon in her neatly organized New York studio. “It’s the 1 percent who control all the policies and trade. Maybe we (in the general public) don’t realize it — but the corporations who want to benefit from the agreement are very tenaciously and meticulously planning everything possible to dismantle socio-economic structures. When we start paying attention, we say ‘Oh my God.’ ”

It seems odd to be talking about boredom in such interesting times. Are you bored? Almost certainly you are, if Spa! magazine’s insights are reliable. Polling 2,052 mid-career (age 35-45), moderately prosperous (annual income ¥4 million-¥6 million) businessmen (sic, men only), it found no fewer than 85 percent confessing to being bored at work.

Eighty-five percent! They should form a political party and run for office. They’d soon have Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the nation’s optimist-in-chief (“Japan is back”), on the defensive. With numbers like that, a Boredom Party would pose a challenge the moribund official opposition can scarcely hope to.

Japan failed to include 640 kg of unused plutonium in its annual reports to the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2012 and 2013, in what experts are terming an “inappropriate omission.”

The stock is part of mixed plutonium-uranium oxide (MOX) fuel stored in a reactor that was offline during this period, and was thus deemed exempt from IAEA reporting requirements, said an official at the Japan Atomic Energy Commission.

Experts warn that Japan’s reporting does not reflect the actual state of unused plutonium that could be diverted for nuclear weapons. The unreported amount is enough to make about 80 nuclear bombs.

In March 2011, the MOX fuel was loaded into the No. 3 reactor of Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Genkai nuclear plant in Saga Prefecture during a regular checkup. It was removed two years later because the reactor has remained idled since the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

When Japan reported to the IAEA in 2012 that it had 1.6 tons of unused plutonium at reactors nationwide as of the end of 2011, down from 2.2 tons the previous year, it excluded the 640 kg. The amount reported a year later remained at 1.6 tons.

The fuel has been kept unused in a fuel pool since March 2013.

Japan is subject to rigorous international monitoring, as it possesses the largest amount of plutonium among nonnuclear weaponized nations, with more than 44 tons extracted from spent fuel and reprocessed for reuse under its nuclear fuel cycle policy.

In a major report, published in The Lancet Oncology, more than 40 specialists warn that Asia’s big two emerging giants are facing huge economic and human costs from the disease.

In China, cancer now accounts for 1 in every 5 deaths, ranking second only to cardiovascular disease as the most common cause of mortality, according to the study.

Sixty percent of cancer cases in China are attributable to “modifiable environmental factors,” including smoking, water contamination and air pollution, it said.

NEW YORK – Two New York state lawmakers said Monday that they have introduced legislation to require all new public school textbooks used in the state to refer to the waters between Japan and South Korea as the East Sea as well as the Sea of Japan.

The East Sea is South Korea’s preferred name. Korean Americans in the state have been pressing for textbooks to use both names for the body of water.

The bill was introduced to both houses of the state legislature after Virginia state lawmakers passed similar legislation last Thursday.
