What has worked for us in the past is a treasure trove that we are not leveraging enoughDéjà vuI am trying to do something. I broadly know how to do it but I don’t know the exact details. I search for it on Google. Google is a very big name today because it lets you get access to relevant information very fast. But however there is one issue with Google search. There is too much of content. I call this content overload. For example let us say when I search “What is blockchain”, there are about 22,00,00,000 results that are available. How do I know what is good? I really don’t.But Google does a good job at showing the best results at the top. In fact a very good job at it and that is the reason Google has a market cap of 847 Billion USD. But still I am not happy many times as I can’t figure (...)

You receive the benefit of a diverse range of opinions on each topic which makes every book more valuable and aids in the retention of the information you’ve consumed. We will get through a book in two weeks. This gives people enough time to order the physical copy if that’s their preference.During the process, the group acts as an open forum to discuss what you’ve read, why you find it interesting or the reason you disagree (especially if you disagree!). From there, discussion will naturally occur which has enough differing perspective and viewpoints to make things compelling and interesting. The only rule (...)

University alerts students to danger of leftwing essay

Prevent critics slam Reading for labelling ‘mainstream’ academic text as extremist.
An essay by a prominent leftwing academic that examines the ethics of socialist revolution has been targeted by a leading university using the government’s counter-terrorism strategy.

Students at the University of Reading have been told to take care when reading an essay by the late Professor Norman Geras, in order to avoid falling foul of Prevent.

Third-year politics undergraduates have been warned not to access it on personal devices, to read it only in a secure setting, and not to leave it lying around where it might be spotted “inadvertently or otherwise, by those who are not prepared to view it”. The alert came after the text was flagged by the university as “sensitive” under the Prevent programme.

The essay, listed as “essential” reading for the university’s Justice and Injustice politics module last year, is titled Our Morals: The Ethics of Revolution. Geras was professor emeritus of government at the University of Manchester until his death in 2013. He rejected terrorism but argued that violence could be justified in the case of grave social injustices.

Waqas Tufail, a senior lecturer in criminology at Leeds Beckett University who wrote a report about Prevent last year, described the case at Reading as “hugely concerning”. Another Prevent expert, Fahid Qurashi of Staffordshire University, said the move showed how anti-terrorism legislation is “being applied far beyond its purview”.
Guardian Today: the headlines, the analysis, the debate - sent direct to you
    Read more

Ilyas Nagdee, black students’ officer for the National Union of Students, said the case again highlighted “misunderstanding of the [counter-terrorism guidance].”

The strategy, itself controversial, is meant to divert people before they offend, and requires universities to monitor students’ and academics’ access to material that could be considered extremist. The scheme has repeatedly come under fire since its remit was expanded by the coalition government in 2011. Critics argue that it has curtailed academic freedom by encouraging universities to cancel appearances by extremist speakers and for fostering a “policing culture” in higher education.

Tufail added: “This text was authored by a mainstream, prominent academic who was well-regarded in his field, who was a professor at Manchester for many years and whose obituary was published in the Guardian. This case raises huge concerns about academic freedom and students’ access to material, and it raises wider questions about the impact of Prevent.” The text was identified as potentially sensitive by an academic convening the course. “This is almost worse because it means academics are now engaging in self-censorship,” Tufail said.

Nagdee said: “Prevent fundamentally alters the relationship between students and educators, with those most trusted with our wellbeing and development forced to act as informants. As this case shows, normal topics that are discussed as a matter of course in our educational spaces are being treated as criminal”.

The University of Reading said: “Lecturers must inform students in writing if their course includes a text deemed security-sensitive, and then list which students they expect will have to access the material.

“As laid out in the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, the University of Reading has put policies in place to take steps to prevent students being drawn into terrorism.” One aspect of this is to safeguard staff and students who access security-sensitive materials legitimately and appropriately used for study or research.”

Our Morals: The Ethics of Revolution, by Norman Geras
      ►https://socialistregister.com/index.php/srv/article/view/5565

      https://socialistregister.com/public/journals/55/cover_issue_423_en_US.jpg

      Abstract
In this essay I shall be concerned with what can be termed, broadly, the etfiics of revolution. I consider by what normative principles socialists might be guided, whether in judgement or in action, when it comes to revolutionary change. A comprehensive treatment of the issue would require more space than I have here. It would involve not only a theory - be it of needs or of rights or of justice - for the comparative assessment of social and political institutions, a large enough desideratum, evidently, in itself; but also, with it, the resolution of some deep questions in moral philosophy. I shall have some things to say about all this. But I cannot deal with it, so to speak, from the bottom up. In much, I have to proceed instead assertively, relying where I can on the advocacy of others, or on the belief simply that a needed argument could be supplied. The procedure allows me to use what space I have for concentration upon a narrower purpose.

I recently finished #reading John Carreyrou’s Bad Blood, a gripping true story of greed, lies and hubris in the Silicon Valley. Midway through the book, I found an interesting anecdote.Write an email more than 500 wordsA young mechanical engineer finds a way to manage his overbearing and annoying boss, Sunny. Every time Sunny mails the young engineer asking for some information, he replies with an email that is longer than 500 words. “That usually brought him several weeks of peace because Sunny simply didn’t have the patience to read long emails.”How many of us do that? Avoid reading long emails or skim through long articles? Irrespective of which generation we belong to, Gen X, Gen Y or Gen Z, we all are now part of what has come to be known as Generation TL;DR (too long; didn’t (...)

Why can’t we read anymore ?

Recent neuroscience confirms many of the things we sufferers of digital overload know innately. That successful multi-tasking is a myth. Multi-tasking makes us stupider.

    [...]

It turns out that digital devices and software are finely tuned to train us to pay attention to them, no matter what else we should be doing. The mechanism, borne out by recent neuroscience studies, is something like this:

    • New information creates a rush of dopamine to the brain, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good.
    • The promise of new information compels your brain to seek out that dopamine rush.

With fMRIs, you can see the brain’s pleasure centres light up with activity when new emails arrive.

From January to April 2018, Femke curates the research centre at a.pass, a programme for advanced performance and scenography studies in Brussels. As part of this, she proposes five Monday Readings that bring habitual tool-situations apparent in a.pass in conversation with theoretical and political thinking. They are intimate collective situations on the articulation of technique and the performance of boundaries. The Mondays attempt to develop further connections between artistic research (...)

    Possible Bodies : Phenomenal 3D
    ▻http://constantvzw.org/site/Possible-Bodies-Phenomenal-3D.html

What norms are shaped through 3D technologies? Who invented those three “dimensions” in the first place and why to stick with them as “true”? Can tools produce realities and presences and if so: what possible bodies do they activate? With Phenomenal 3D. Possible Bodies turns to the modern regime of truth that still tangibly affects daily lives and how they are lived. It is an occasion to collectively wonder how to responsibly grasp the apparatus of 3D and to explore tactics for un-naming (...)

From the beginning we knew we wanted to create an experience that was familiar from an interaction perspective but different from a visual perspective. We aspired to take the traditional editorial content The Atlantic is known for and combine it with a rich digital narrative.
