Indigenous communities transform a Mexican desert landscape into forest
▻https://news.mongabay.com/2022/03/indigenous-communities-transform-a-mexican-desert-landscape-into-fore
In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, 22 communities have taken on the challenge of reviving soils depleted by centuries of overgrazing.
Over the last two decades, they’ve managed to restore at least 20,000 hectares (49,000 acres), turning many sites into burgeoning forests.
The task is especially challenging because the communities are starting from “less than zero” — having to find ways to restore their soil before they can even think about planting trees.
The success of the initiative means the communities can now look forward to more options for forest-based livelihood, such as agroforestry or even selling carbon credits.
]]>#Pakistan has planted over a billion trees
Pakistan hit its billion tree goal in August 2017 – months ahead of schedule. Now, the hills of the country’s northwestern province of #Khyber_Pakhtunkhwa are alive with newly planted saplings.
The massive reforestation project – named the #Billion_Tree_Tsunami – added 350,000 hectares of trees both by planting and natural regeneration, in an effort to restore the province’s depleted forests and fight the effects of climate change.
Decades of felling and natural disasters have drastically reduced Pakistan’s forests. Figures for the country’s total forest cover range between around 2% and 5% of land area. Nevertheless, Pakistan has one of the lowest levels of forest cover in the region and well below the 12% recommended by the UN.
It is also among the six countries that will be most affected by global warming.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had lost large areas of forest to felling, which increased the likelihood of flooding and landslides. In 2016 flash floods hit the province, killing dozens of people.

Tree planting is becoming an increasingly popular tool to combat climate change. The United Nations’ Trillion Tree Campaign has planted nearly 15 billion trees across the globe in recent years. And Australia has announced a plan to plant a billion more by 2050 as part of its effort to meet the country’s Paris Agreement climate targets.

2007,

But by combining archaeological evidence, historical data and analysis of carbon found in Antarctic ice, the UCL researchers showed how the reforestation — directly caused by the Europeans’ arrival — was a key component of the global chill, they said.
“For once, we’ve been able to balance all the boxes and realize that the only way the Little Ice Age was so intense is ... because of the genocide of millions of people,” Maslin told CNN.

Je pourrais me réconcilier avec certains #militaires !
China will plant new forests covering an area of 84,000 square kilometers, roughly the size of Ireland, in 2018, as it aims to increase forest coverage to 23% of total landmass by the end of the decade, China Daily reported last week. The current forested area stands at 21%.
Meanwhile, a separate source in the Central Military Commission said a large regiment of the People’s Liberation Army – in addition to the nation’s armed police force, which has just been absorbed into the commission – have been withdrawn from northern border areas and tasked with a new mission: planting trees.
The actual number of soldiers mobilized is said to be over 60,000.
[...]Zhang Jianlong, head of the State Forestry Administration, said at a meeting last week that China would aim to grow at least 6.66 million hectares of new forest this year.
China’s total forested area is now around 208 million hectares, with 33.8 million hectares having been added in the past five years.

Plantation Definition Discussion – Plantations are not Forests
▻https://plantationdefinitiondiscussion.wordpress.com
Please join this discussion aimed at establishing a separate set of clear and accurate descriptions and definitions for the different kinds of tree plantations, so that it will be possible to make a clear distinction between them and forests.
The Open Letter sent to the CBD Secretariat lays out some of the problematic issues that have arisen as a consequence of the misleading and obfuscatory language being used to describe tree plantations, particularly of the large-scale (industrial) kind, as ‘forests’ or various derivatives thereof, such as “reforestation”. This euphemistic language has wormed its way into general usage and perversely incentivised the on-going global expansion of tree plantations into areas where they damage ecosystems, water resources and biological diversity, and are neither desired, nor required, by affected local communities.
For the FAO’s purposes, any bunch of trees, whether part of a richly biodiverse old-growth forest, or a “planted forest” (industrial tree plantation) of invasive pine or eucalyptus trees, that has caused the destruction of rare grassland or other natural vegetation including real forests, or even smallholder farms, are basically considered to be of equal value, as stores of timber or carbon. Nevertheless, the tired old timber industry mantra continues to be regurgitated in articles such as this: ▻http://blog.cifor.org/47752/green-deserts-or-functional-forests?fnl=en

U.N. to plant 1 million trees to fight deforestation near ...
A million trees are to be planted in Ethiopia to fight deforestation around camps hosting hundreds of thousands of South Sudanese refugees who rely almost entirely on wood for fuel, a United Nations agency said on Wednesday.
The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said the trees would be planted on 150 hectares of land in Ethiopia’s western Gambella region to meet the growing refugee population’s demand for energy.
Almost 300,000 people, mostly women and children, have found shelter in Ethiopia since conflict erupted in South Sudan in December 2013.
Fires used by the refugees for cooking are fuelled almost entirely by chopped wood, putting considerable pressure on local forests, FAO energy and forestry expert Arturo Gianvenuti said.
“Imagine tens of thousands of people - the population of a small city - who suddenly arrive in a location and start using forest resources,” Gianvenuti told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in an interview. “The impact is visible”.
The depletion of forests risks creating tensions with local communities and disrupting the ecosystem, as trees stabilize the climate, regulate water flows and provide shelter to numerous animal species, according to the FAO.
It also exposes refugee women to the risk of sexual abuse as they have to walk long distances in isolated areas to fetch firewood, Gianvenuti said.

India’s New Reforestation Law Ignores Indigenous People, Analysts Say
▻http://www.voanews.com/content/indias-new-reforestation-law-ignores-indigenous-people-analysts-say/3440041.html
A new Indian law to boost reforestation across the country ignores the importance of indigenous people in conserving land and tramples on their rights, analysts and activists said.
India’s upper house of parliament passed a bill late on Thursday that would give state governments more than 60 billion rupees ($895 million) a year to conserve and protect forests and wildlife.
“It is a good bill,” Minister of State of Environment Anil Madhav Dave said in a statement, adding that the new law would help to focus reforestation efforts in a concerted way.
Most of the funds under the Compensatory Afforestation, Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) law would be used to restock denuded forests, Dave said.
The law would also help to create employment, especially in poor regions and areas that are traditionally home to indigenous communities, he said.
However, critics of the law said the money would be better spent on helping local communities who are already engaged in conserving their habitats.

India Plants 50 Million Trees in One Day, Smashing World Record
▻http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/07/india-plants-50-million-trees-uttar-pradesh-reforestation
Although the feat has yet to be certified by Guinness World Records, Indian officials have reported that volunteers planted a whopping 49.3 million tree saplings on July 11, blowing past the previous record for most trees planted in a single day.
That record, a mere 847,275 trees, was set by Pakistan in 2013.
A reported 800,000 volunteers from Uttar Pradesh worked for 24 hours planting 80 different species of trees along roads, railways, and on public land. The saplings were raised on local nurseries.
The effort is part of the commitment India made at the Paris Climate Conference in December 2015. In the agreement, signed on Earth Day 2016, India agreed to spend $6 billion to reforest 12 percent of its land (bringing total forest cover to 235 million acres by 2030, or about 29 percent of the country’s territory).
