The United Nations General Assembly voted 188-2 Tuesday to condemn America’s five-decade-old #embargo against Cuba. Only the #united_states and Israel opposed the resolution, down from three states last year in an annual vote over the crippling blockade by a giant super power against its tiny Caribbean neighbor. It was the 22nd year in a row that the UN voted in favor of the unenforceable resolution. China, Iran, Latin American and African nations all publicly condemned the United States. (...)

Mr. De Schutter used his final report to the UN General Assembly, after six years as Special Rapporteur, to identify where and how progress had been made in implementing the right to food, and to outline further steps that must be taken to make it a fully operational right.

His report was based on eleven country missions, submissions from a range of States from all regions, and regional right to food consultations in Latin America and the Caribbean (2011), Eastern and Southern Africa (2012) and West Africa (2013).

A three-part series looking at the history of France’s black community and their long struggle for recognition.
    http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/specialseries/2013/08/201382894144265709.html

Between one and five million French citizens claim African or Caribbean heritage. These numbers are, however, estimates, as population censuses do not recognise race.

For over a century, black immigrants, though never officially identified as different, were treated as ’others’.

Even today, of France’s 577 members of parliament, only five are black.

This three-part series tells the story of blacks in France - a long history of segregation, racism, protest, violence, culture and community building - from the turn of the 20th century until the present day.

  • Caribbean has lost 80% of its coral reef cover in recent years | Environment | theguardian.com
    http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2013/aug/01/caribbean-coral-reef-loss

A major survey of the coral reefs of the Caribbean is expected to reveal the extent to which one of the world’s biggest and most important reserves of coral has been degraded by climate change, pollution, overfishing and degradation.

The Catlin scientific survey will undertake the most comprehensive survey yet of the state of the region’s reefs, starting in Belize and moving on to Mexico, Anguilla, Barbuda, St Lucia, Turks & Caicos, Florida and Bermuda.

The Catlin scientists said the state of the regions’ reefs would act as an early warning of problems besetting all of the world’s coral. As much as 80% of Caribbean coral is reckoned to have been lost in recent years, but the survey should give a more accurate picture of where the losses have had most effect and on the causes.

  • Slavery compensation: Caribbean nations propose Mau Mau model | World news | guardian.co.uk
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/26/caribbean-countries-slavery-compensation-claim

Leaders of more than a dozen Caribbean countries are launching a united effort to seek compensation from three European nations for what they say is the lingering legacy of the Atlantic slave trade.

The Caribbean Community, a regional organisation, has taken up the cause of compensation for slavery and the genocide of native peoples and is preparing for what would likely be a drawn-out battle with the governments of Britain, France and the Netherlands.

It has engaged the British law firm of Leigh Day, which waged a successful fight for compensation for hundreds of Kenyans who were tortured by the British colonial government during the so-called Mau Mau rebellion of the 1950s and 1960s.

  • Most foreign investment in #BRICs isn’t foreign at all—it’s tycoons using tax havens – Quartz
    http://qz.com/66944/the-brics-biggest-investment-sources-are-tax-havens-which-mostly-shows-the-rich-

The clearest sign that BRICs are leaking tax revenues is that each country’s biggest source of outside investment is a tax haven. China counts the tiny Caribbean bolthole of the British Virgin Islands as its biggest source of foreign investment (not including the Chinese territory of Hong Kong). India has Mauritius, Russia has Cyprus, and Brazil has the Netherlands.

The explanation for these incongruent flows of cash is that wealthy nationals are sequestering their income offshore to avoid paying tax, and then bringing it home dressed up as foreign investment to disguise the source of the funds. Here’s how it works.

  • A Different Model — Medical Care in #Cuba — NEJM
    http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1215226

This highly structured, prevention-oriented system has produced positive results. Vaccination rates in Cuba are among the highest in the world. The life expectancy of 78 years from birth is virtually identical to that in the United States. The infant mortality rate in Cuba has fallen from more than 80 per 1000 live births in the 1950s to less than 5 per 1000 — lower than the U.S. rate, although the maternal mortality rate remains well above those in developed countries and is in the middle of the range for Caribbean countries.3,4 Without doubt, the improved health outcomes are largely the result of improvements in nutrition and education, which address the social determinants of health. Cuba’s literacy rate is 99%, and health education is part of the mandatory school curriculum. A recent national program to promote acceptance of men who have sex with men was designed in part to reduce rates of sexually transmitted disease and improve acceptance of and adherence to treatment. Cigarettes can no longer be obtained with monthly ration cards, and smoking rates have decreased, though local health teams say it remains difficult to get smokers to quit. Contraception is free and strongly encouraged. Abortion is legal but is seen as a failure of prevention.

But one should not romanticize Cuban health care. The system is not designed for consumer choice or individual initiatives. There is no alternative, private-payer health system.

Christian preacher blames gays for Hurricane Sandy
Chaplain John McTernan has said God’s judgment of gays caused the hurricane nearing the east coast of the United States
    29 October 2012 | By Joe Morgan
Chaplain John McTernan is blaming Hurricane Sandy on gay people, as well as Barack Obama and Mitt Romney’s ’support’ of gay issues.

An anti-gay Christian preacher is already blaming Hurricane Sandy on gays.

As the east coast of the United States prepares for the storm, which has already killed 60 people in the Caribbean, author and chaplain John McTernan has decided who is at fault.

On his website Defend Proclaim The Faith, the preacher says the gathering storm must be God’s judgment on gays, and punishing the president Barack Obama for coming out in support of marriage equality.

He believes ever since George Bush Sr signed the Madrid Peace Process to divide the land of Israel in 1991, ‘America has been under God’s judgment since this event.’

McTernan said: ‘Obama is 100% behind the Muslim Brotherhood which has vowed to destroy Israel and take Jerusalem.

‘Both candidates are pro-homosexual and are behind the homosexual agenda. America is under political judgment and the church does not know it!’

His reasoning for this is that it has been 21 years since the ‘perfect storm’ of October 1991.

’21 years breaks down to 7 x 3, which is a significant number with God. Three is perfection as the Godhead is three in one while seven is perfection,’ he said.

McTernan had planned to host a prayer meeting tonight (29 October), which would be streamed online on his website.

However as the storm is scheduled to go right over his house, the preacher has warned the sermons may be stopped if the power goes out.

The online minister also blamed Hurricane Isaac, which later became a tropical storm, on homosexuals. He said gay festival Southern Decadence was to blame, as God was ‘putting an end to this city and its wickedness.’

Thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people enjoyed Southern Decadence, and nine preachers were arrested for an aggressive anti-gay demonstration.

Tris Reid-Smith, director and editor of Gay Star News, who is in Baltimore, Maryland for LGBT workplace conference Out and Equal, said: ’So far it looks like any cancellations to events over the next few days are just going to give us more time for partying.

’If God is trying to punish the gays, he sure doesn’t know how to do it.’

Sandy, dubbed a ‘Frankenstorm’, could affect up to 60 million people as several states have declared emergencies, schools have closed and transport services suspended.

Anti-gay hate forces closure of Jamaica gay homeless center
Jamaica’s only drop-in center for homeless LGBT youth was closed due to anti-gay sentiments by local authorities and media
    01 October 2012 | By Dan Littauer
Many LGBT youth become homeless and live in the streets of Kingston, Jamaica whose only source of help, in the form of a drop in center, has now been shut

The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-sexuals & Gays (J-FLAG) – a charity organisation, was forced to close down the Caribbean island state’s only drop-in centre for homeless gays which it managed with the Jamaica Aids Support (JAS) organization.

The announcement was made by a J-FLAG representative at a recent meeting in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston.

Maurice Tomilson, Jamaican lawyer and leading LGBT rights advocate told GSN that homelessness of LGBT people is a major problem in Jamacia. A recent survey reported by GSN found high levels of homophobia in Jamaica; many young people are ejected by their families, communities and schools due to their sexuality.

The meeting on Thursday (27 September) was called by city officials who were said to ‘be concerned about the action of homosexuals behaving badly and selling sexual services on the streets of Kingston’.

It included representatives from J-FLAG and JAS and a group of approximately 20 homeless gay men, many of whom appeared to be in their teens and early 20s.

The gay men stated their greatest needs were for skills training, food, clothing and shelter.

One of the group was quoted by the Jamaican daily The Gleaner as saying: ‘the schooling is not going to be enough. We need meals and a drop-in centre. Some of them don’t have clothes. Where are they gonna sleep and get food?’

Dane Lewis, a J-FLAG representative, was quoted as saying: ‘We have tried to conduct a drop-in centre on a number of occasions, but we don’t have the skills set and resources to deal with it. What we have decided is that we have to stop it … because we don’t have the staff capacity to manage it.’

‘We are on our knees,’ said one of the street gays begging J-FLAG to reconsider.

City officials, however, had little sympathy for the homeless gay youth.

Kari Douglas, a city councillor urged the young men ‘to take responsibility for themselves’.

While Angela Brown-Burke, mayor of Kingston blamed the youth for bringing misery on themselves as they ‘were lacking a sense of responsibility.’

‘Be careful because we don’t want to think that there is a sense of obligation’ she said.

Julian Robinson, the member of parliament for the South East St Andrew constituency that includes Kingston and its environs agreed with the mayor and said that ‘raucous behaviour of the homosexuals, which includes fighting and flamboyance, in the neighbourhood had to be addressed.’

‘We have to tackle frontally the behavioural issue. Many people in Jamaica face similar challenges and don’t behave in the same disruptive manner.

‘It is a police problem, it is a residential problem and it is a business problem.’

Commander Christopher Murdock, head of the Kingston Police, also said the youth behaved ‘in a terrible manner

‘Each of these young men needs to take a hard look at themselves and see if they can behave in a civil manner’.

The local Jamaican media showed even less sympathy and reported the closure under a sensaltionalist title: ’Rowdy Gays Strike - J-FLAG Abandons Raucous Homosexuals Misbehaving In New Kingston’.

Tomilson told GSN: ‘J-FLAG and JAS have been struggling for years to develop an appropriate protocol to deal with the steady stream of homeless LGBT youth living on the streets of the nation’s capital. Many them come from very challenging areas and have poor conflict resolution skills.

‘JFLAG and JAS are simply not equipped to meet the complex social, emotional and physical needs of these individuals and have therefore sought assistance from the government.

‘Both groups also tried to launch a media campaign encouraging Jamaicans to love their LGBT family members and so stop evicting them. In this regard, a tolerance themed advertisement was developed, however, the television stations flatly refused to even accept payment to air the advertisement because they claimed it would encourage homosexuality.

‘Expecting these homeless youth to rehabilitate themselves is ridiculous, and I suspect JFLAG and JAS know that.

’The result is that these youth will now be harder to reach with essential HIV prevention, treatment, care and support interventions.

‘Since some of these homeless youth engage in sex work as a means of survival, this represents a public health crisis.

‘Jamaican homophobia contributed to the high number of homeless LGBT people.

‘Yet, like Pontius Pilate, the Prime Minister, Portia Simpson-Miller and her government refuse to show leadership to end this scourge by expeditiously seeking a repeal of the archaic anti-sodomy law that sanctions violence, police extortions and other abuses against LGBT.

‘Simply put, while the Jamaican government dithers on the issue of human rights for LGBT, they are presiding over a public health tragedy. Truly, we sow to the wind and we reap the whirlwind.’

Watch the tolerance advertisement rejected by Jamaican media on the grounds they ’encourage homosexuality’:
