Toward better social value creation in road infrastructure: a conceptual model
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1760070

Project social value has emerged as a critical dimension of sustainable road infrastructure, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, limited integrative models explain how project social value can be systematically embedded in infrastructure delivery. This study develops a conceptual model to enhance project social value in road construction through a comprehensive synthesis of prior research. The model identifies five factors: community engagement, government role, sustainability practices, organizational performance, and design, represented by 38 indicators. Grounded in stakeholder and sustainability theories, the model positions project processes as the dynamic context through which these determinants interact to generate social outcomes. The (...)

A product service systems-led approach towards advancing sustainable human settlements in South Africa
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2026.1702835

End-user dissatisfaction in South Africa’s sustainable human settlements persists because public housing delivery remains dominated by product-oriented approaches that prioritise speed and initial affordability over lifecycle performance, durability, and long-term sustainability. These outcomes reflect structural weaknesses in governance, accountability, and post-occupancy management rather than purely technical shortcomings. In response, this study positions Product–Service Systems (PSS) as a sustainability management and governance framework for public housing delivery, rather than as a technical or consumer-driven innovation. Housing is reconceptualised as a service-integrated system in which institutional stewardship, lifecycle accountability, and resident agency are central to (...)

Public–private partnerships as catalysts for green infrastructure: a three-pronged analysis of economic, environmental, and institutional factors
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2025.1591278

As cities contend with the escalating challenges of climate change, rapid urbanization, and resource depletion, the need for sustainable infrastructure solutions has never been more urgent. Cities account for 75% of global CO2 emissions, yet efforts to implement green solutions remain fragmented. Green public–private partnerships (PPPs) offer a sustainable solution, but the mechanisms for effectively leveraging these collaborations remain underexplored. Despite growing interest in PPPs, a critical knowledge gap persists: how is PPP leveraged in tackling crucial urban challenges for advancing green infrastructure? This study critically examines how PPPs drive progress in six key sectors: renewable energy, sustainable urban mobility, water management, waste management, green building and (...)

Urban metabolism: a dual-perspective case study and its implications in the urban political economy of developing nations for an effective SDG framework
    ▻https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/frsc.2025.1538006

Urban Metabolism is derived from a biological-based mechanism wherein a city is metaphorically analyzed from a biological perspective, which tracks the transformation of resources and addresses key questions related to self-sufficiency and consumer behavior. This research, for the first time, explores Urban Metabolism as a tool to evaluate sustainability-related framework and standards for urban regions on both global and local scales to address regional disparity and better means to devolve powers to local planning institutions. In the first half of the study, an adaptive approach was used to categorize the concept and find its connection with SDGs, wherein it was inferred that a new section under economic ecology has evolved, which requires policy interventions as its application at (...)
