One man’s wild idea for saving rhinos: Airlifting them to Australia - The Washington Post
▻https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2016/04/06/one-mans-wild-idea-for-saving-rhinos-airlifting-them-to-australia

BLENDING IVORY: China’s Old Loopholes, New Hopes – The Report - Elephant Action League
▻http://elephantleague.org/blending-ivory-chinas-old-loopholes-new-hopes-the-report
– Legitimate businesses and business people participate in and facilitate the laundering of illicit ivory through the legal ivory market by such means as 1) importing supposedly pre-ban, antique, and trophy hunting ivory, 2) the manipulation of the ivory registration system within China, 3) trading ivory privately and illegally without following the government’s guidelines and restrictions, and 4) the use of the existing huge illegal raw ivory stocks (>1,000 tons) in the hands of a few traders.
– Chinese traders now import ivory mainly via Hong Kong (or purchase worked ivory in Hong Kong), “legalize” it, and re-export the ivory to mainland China.

What is a rhino in the wild really worth?
By Michael Gerson
October 12 at 7:29 PM
In Africa, the average cost of an AK-47 is a little over $300. A single rhinoceros horn — reputed (falsely) in Asia to have cancer-healing properties — can bring $300,000 on the black market. So a criminal gang or a terrorist group knows what a dead rhino is worth: several hundred assault rifles (less the commission owed middlemen). Al-Shabab, the Somali terrorist group behind the Westgate mall attack in Kenya, uses poached ivory to fund its operations.

California bans ivory

The state of California has officially banned the sale of virtually all elephant ivory and rhino horn.
On Sunday California governor Jerry Brown signed state assembly bill AB 96 into law. AB 96 makes it illegal to sell almost all elephant ivory and rhino horn, including most antiques.
Owners can sell ivory and rhino horn up until July 1, 2016. After that, penalties reach up to a $50,000 fine and a year in prison.

The Small Arms Survey 2015: Weapons and the World examines the role of weapons and armed violence in humanity’s appropriation of the earth’s wildlife and mineral riches—in Africa, where the poaching of elephants and #rhinos is becoming increasingly militarized, and near resource #extraction sites around the world. In addition to presenting updates on the UN small arms process and the top arms importers and exporters, the volume assesses how recent technological developments affect weapons marking, record-keeping, and tracing; reviews small arms flows to Egypt, Libya, and Syria before and after the ‘Arab Spring’; and evaluates a stockpile management initiative in South-east Europe. The ‘armed actors’ section sheds light on the arms and ammunition used by insurgents in northern Mali, the decline of the Forces Démocratiques de Libération du Rwanda, and the use of #floating_armouries by private security companies in the Indian Ocean. This edition also analyses the conditions that are driving young people to adopt high-risk coping strategies in #Burundi.

African terrorists turn tusks into cash - Business Insider
▻http://uk.businessinsider.com/this-detailed-map-shows-how-terrorists-use-elephant-ivory-to-fun
In the September 2015 issue of National Geographic, journalist Bryan Christy’s story, “Tracking Ivory,” began with a brilliant idea: Design artificial elephant tusks, complete with GPS devices, and monitor where they travel.
With help from experts, the tusks became a reality and journeyed across Africa.
While Central Africa has lost 64% of its elephant population in just a decade from poaching, effectively tracking and eliminating the illicit ivory trade will do substantially more than just protect wildlife. The illegal profits from this trade help support some of the most violent militias, terrorist organizations, and paramilitary groups throughout eastern Africa.
The map below shows the tusks’ path:

▻http://information.tv5monde.com/en-continu/afrique-du-sud-pas-de-repit-dans-le-massacre-des-rhinoceros-32

The trafficking of African rhinoceros horn on the black market has surged 30-fold in the past 13 years and is now running out of control, animal protection advocates have said.
“In 2013, more than 2,000 rhinoceros horns from Africa were trafficked, which is 30 times more than in 2000,” Celine Sissler-Bienvenu, director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) for France and French-speaking Africa, told reporters in Paris.

Could sound design help captive rhino breeding?
Researchers in Texas are investigating whether the hum and rumble of urban life is one of the factors that hinders the captive breeding of rhinoceroses.
Other research has considered the influence of diet and physical surroundings, but scientists speaking at a conference said they believed the animals’ #soundscape might be crucial.
Rhinos have extremely good ears, picking up “infrasound” far deeper than the range of human hearing.
[...] #Rhinos, she explained, can hear down to a frequency of four hertz, whereas even a human baby, with entirely undamaged ears, can normally only pick up sounds as low as 20 hertz. Giraffes and elephants can also hear in this infrasound range.
[...] “The soundscape is something that #zoos need to consider and it’s something that can be improved,” Ms Wiseman told the BBC.
She said that although zoos and other institutions had made a lot of effort to make their animals as comfortable as possible, “nobody’s really looked at the noise factor”.
