Russian Firms to Build World’s Most Powerful Nuclear Icebreaker - The New York Times
    ▻https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/04/23/world/europe/23reuters-russia-icebreaker.html

Two Russian companies signed a deal on Thursday to build the world’s most powerful nuclear icebreaker to help boost trade on a northern sea route crucial to forging closer links with Asia.

Atomflot, a subsidiary of Russian nuclear group #Rosatom, and the Zvezda shipyard, owned by a consortium led by oil giant #Rosneft, said they would work together to build the Lider (Leader) icebreaker.

President Vladimir Putin has said that Arctic shipping routes along Russia’s northern coast could rival the Suez Canal as a short-cut trade route between Europe and Asia.

Rosatom said the icebreaker, fitted with a nuclear power unit, would be able to smash through ice as thick as 4 metres. The vessel, with the propulsion power of 120 megawatts, is scheduled to be constructed in 2027.

Russia’s largest and most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker has returned from its first round of sea trials before its planned delivery in 2020.

The icebreaker, named Arktika, is under construction at Russia’s Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg.

The vessel will displace 33,540 tonnes and is equipped with two nuclear reactors each with 175 MW thermal capacity, making it the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world.

The icebrekaer is first in Russia’s project 22220 which is planned to produce three nuclear-powered icebreakers for Russia’s state nuclear agency #ROSATOM.

The Arktika departed St. Petersburg to the Gulf of Finland on December, returning two days later after completing testing of the ship’s generators, navigation and communications systems.

A final stage of sea trials is scheduled in March-April 2020 followed by delivery planned for May 2020.

Once delivered, Arktika will become the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world, used for ship escort and icebreaking in the Russian Arctic.

On rappellera que les États-Unis, bien qu’État arctique ont aujourd’hui un potentiel de brises-glace pratiquement inexistant…

Defending territories, Defending our lives : Protecting human rights and the environment in Asia Pacific through system change | Voices from FoE Asia Pacific

Every day, peoples and communities across the world come together to take collective action, often fighting for their collective rights, for dignity and for access to resources and their sustainable use.

Yet many of these Defenders of Territories and Human Rights are being threatened, suppressed or in extreme cases killed. In the last few years, Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific’s member groups’ staff, activists and supporters have been beaten, sued, kidnapped, bankrupted, defamed, jailed and murdered for campaigning for environmental justice.

To keep Defenders safe we need both systemic change and the introduction of practical policies at the local, national and international level, and also within civil society organisations.

Finland signs nuclear construction deal with Russian firm - Yahoo News

Finnish utility Fennovoima said Thursday it has awarded the main contract for constructing a nuclear plant in Finland to the Russian company Titan-2.

Fennovoima said it has completed the approval process for the company, which was signed up for the deal in January by Fennovoima’s partner in the project, Rusatom Overseas — a subsidiary of Russian state-owned nuclear company Rosatom.

Rosatom owns 34 percent of the Hanhikivi 1 project, which was endorsed by lawmakers last year, provided domestic investors increase their current 55-percent stake to at least 60 percent. Fennovoima has said it is confident investors will come forward in time.

European sanctions against Moscow for backing Ukrainian rebels does not apply to Finland’s cooperation with Rosatom, whose involvement in the 1,200-megawatt plant was approved in early 2013 before the EU measures were put in place.

Fennovoima said Titan-2 will build the nuclear and turbine island and provide installations, materials and equipment for Finland’s sixth nuclear reactor, which is expected to be operational by 2024.

No construction start date has been given although Fennovoima says on-site preparations will be ready by year-end, including fencing off the area. It expects to complete approvals next month for three other key suppliers— all subsidiaries of Rosatom.

Finland, which provides some 30 percent of its electricity through atomic energy, has been building a fifth reactor since 2005, but that project has been plagued by delays, partly caused by poor materials. The 1,600-megawatt European Pressurized Reactor, being constructed by French-German engineering conglomerate Areva-Siemens, was meant to provide electricity by 2009 but is not expected to go online until 2018.
