YOUR OWN PERSONAL SLAVES. ?
Which of these products do you use?
Here’s the illustration I’ve been working on the last few weeks - I wanted to do a piece about all the products we depend on, that are made or reaped by forced labor, child workers, sex slaves, etc.

Facebook has just #censored my work YOUR OWN PERSONAL SLAVES twice for not meeting its community standards. >:( >:( >:(
And yet, according to its own standards: “We also allow photographs of paintings, sculptures and other art that depicts nude figures. Restrictions on the display of both nudity and sexual activity also apply to digitally created content unless the content is posted for educational, humorous or satirical purposes.”
I’ve tried to appeal to them but received NO ANSWER.
As an editorial illustrator focusing on political and social issues, with work published in more than 15 countries around the world, I strongly denounce another clear censorship situation by Facebook, when it simultaneously accepts contents that clearly exploit violence, sex, women and children.

Authorities systematically violate refugees’ rights with forcible detention
Initiative Welcome and Are You Syrious on Wednesday presented a report in which they conclude, based on observations and interviews, that Croatian authorities have been forcibly detaining refugees in closed-off sections of the refugee transit centre at #Slavonski_Brod, thus systematically violating their human rights, and called for immediately ensuring free movement for those people.

Grèce : le courage du désespoir
▻http://bibliobs.nouvelobs.com/idees/20150720.OBS2830/exclusif-le-courage-du-desespoir-par-slavoj-i-ek.html

In Congo.

Henry Okelue suggested that today’s History Lesson be about Nigeria’s security agencies. Problem is, there’s paucity of verifiable information, so, we’ll go ahead with what was mapped out for today, which is about slavery, it’s effects on us, up until this day. And before some people chop my head off, it is not possible, in any way, to compress five centuries of history into a few paragraphs. The idea behind this is so that those who are interested will pick it up. Like I stated earlier, I committed to doing this once a week as a response to Nigeria’s removal of history from its school curriculum.

The Cape Town company that designs and markets “slave ship” ironing board and aprons
▻http://africasacountry.com/maid-in-africa-the-cape-town-company-that-designs-a-slave-ship-iron
What is it with some white South Africans’ penchant for living in an a-historical bubble? Gumtree, the South African Craigslist, is running an ad for an apartment in Randburg, a former white suburb of Johannesburg (with about 30% black residents) to which only “young white professionals” are invited to apply; then people who should know better (journalists, researchers) think Apartheid wasn’t so bad after all. Now there’s a Cape Town company that—in the name of subversive “art”—designs products using a slave ship drawing from a 1788 abolitionist broadside (chances are you’ve seen it). Yes: a graphic of a slave ship packed with slaves, intended to depict the inhumanity of chattel #slavery, is now printed on dresses, aprons and ironing boards (which they actually refer to as "slaving (...)

On Sunday, walking past the Exclusive Books store, it was interesting to see #Kees_van_der_Waal’s new edited text, Winelands, Work and Wealth: Transformations in the Dwars Valley prominently displayed in the window. I found it striking because it brought to the fore something that is so obvious but so well hidden in Stellenbosch town. Walking through the oak lined streets steeped in Cape Dutch vintage, it’s hard to tell that all of it was built up by the sweat of black slaves and workers over roughly 3 centuries. I could not find a slave or workers monument in the town, despite noticing how rich the public art culture (...)

A Dubai court has upheld a 15-year jail term for an Emirati woman who tortured her Ethiopian maid to death by forcing her to drink pesticide, media reported Monday. The 46-year-old housewife was also accused of torturing a Filipina maid and beating up a third domestic worker whose nationality was not specified, Gulf News reported. Her husband, also an Emirati, was jailed for three years for “aiding and abetting the crime,” the daily said. read more
