Some Linux #desktop_environments were developed over decades, others in just a few years. Starling, which made the rounds online this week, claims to have been built by just one person in six months using AI coding tools. What’s more, a preview build is available as a .deb to install on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Yup, this isn’t a ChatGPT mockup but a real working demo. According to the project’s GitHub and website, a developer used AI to rewrite Flutter’s framework layer from Dart to Swift, and left its C++ rendering engine unchanged. https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/30/fusion-power-darling-commonwealth-fusion-systems-raises-another-1b

#Commonwealth_Fusion_Systems (#CFS) has long been the best-funded #fusion power #startup. Now, it’s extending its lead.

CFS announced Thursday that it raised $1 billion in a new round that included “significant institutional investors, such as pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and infrastructure and industrial corporate partners,” the company said. When asked by TechCrunch, the company declined to name the specific investors. To date, CFS has raised $4 billion.

The funding arrives as the company’s spending ramps up. CFS is currently building #Sparc, its #demonstration reactor, and finalizing the design of #Arc, its first #commercial power plant.

    (...)

This is CFS’s largest round since raising $1.8 billion in 2021. The startup’s previous fundraise, announced in August, added $863 million to its coffers and included #Nvidia, #Google, Khosla Ventures, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures among its investors.

CFS is pursuing a form of fusion known as magnetic confinement, in which powerful magnetic fields confine plasma inside the reactor, keeping the plasma dense and hot enough to spark fusion reactions. When atomic nuclei from the fusion fuel fuse, the reaction releases enormous amounts of energy. CFS plans to harvest the heat thrown off by the reaction to power a steam turbine.

    https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/19/every-fusion-startup-that-has-raised-over-100m

Fusion startups have raised $7.1 billion to date, with the majority of it going to a handful of companies.

Over the last several years, fusion power has gone from the butt of jokes — always a decade away! — to an increasingly tangible and tantalizing technology that has drawn investors off the sidelines.

The technology may be challenging to master and expensive to build today, but fusion promises to harness the #nuclear reaction that powers the sun to generate nearly limitless energy here on Earth. If startups are able to complete commercially viable fusion #power_plants, then they have the potential to upend trillion-dollar markets.

The bullish wave buoying the fusion #industry has been driven by three advances: more powerful computer chips, more sophisticated AI, and powerful high-temperature #superconducting #magnets. Together, they have helped deliver more sophisticated reactor designs, better simulations, and more complex control schemes.

It doesn’t hurt that, at the end of 2022, a U.S. Department of Energy lab announced that it had produced a controlled fusion reaction that produced more power than the lasers had imparted to the fuel pellet. The experiment had crossed what’s known as scientific breakeven, and while it’s still a long ways from commercial breakeven, where the reaction produces more than the entire facility consumes, it was a long-awaited step that proved the underlying science was sound.

Founders have built on that momentum in recent years, pushing the private fusion industry forward at a rapid pace.

  • Starbucks Korea CEO fired after ‘Tank Day’ promo evokes brutal crackdown on democracy
    https://edition.cnn.com/2026/05/19/business/starbucks-korea-ceo-fired-tank-tumbles-intl-hnk

Starbucks Korea’s promotional ad for “Tank Day,” left, and the company’s statement of apology / Yonhap

19.5.2026 SeoulReuters - The head of Starbucks Korea has been fired after a marketing campaign sparked public outrage for evoking painful memories of a brutal military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1980.

Shinsegae Group, the retail conglomerate that licenses and manages the US coffee chain in South Korea, said it had sacked Sohn Jeong-hyun, the head of Starbucks Korea, for carrying out “inappropriate marketing.”

Sohn’s dismissal came hours after Starbucks launched its “Tank Day” campaign on Monday promoting what it called its “Tank” line of tumblers with the tagline “put it on the table with a sound of ‘Tak!’”

Monday also marked Democratisation Movement Day, which commemorates the student-led Gwangju Uprising of May 1980, and the campaign drew strong criticism in South Korea.

Hundreds of people are estimated to have died or gone missing when the military dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan deployed troops and tanks to crack down on the protests. Many details remain unconfirmed, including who gave the order to open fire on the protesters. Chun finally stepped down in 1988 amid growing calls for democracy.

Critics also questioned the use of the phrase “tak” for echoing explanations by South Korean police in 1987 for the death of a student protester, who was found to have been tortured. At the time, police said the student died after investigators struck a desk making a “tak” sound, according to local media reports.

Reuters was unable to reach Sohn for comment and Starbucks Korea declined to make him available for comment, saying he had already left the company. The company has withdrawn the campaign.

Writing on X on Monday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said he was “enraged” by Starbucks’ campaign and demanded it apologize to families of people killed during the uprising.

The campaign “tarnished the bloody protests of Gwangju citizens and the victims of the protests,” Lee said, calling it the act of a “degenerate peddler.”

Starbucks Korea posted a statement on its website apologizing for the promotion while Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin also issued a public apology.

“I deeply bow in apology as the representative of the group,” Chung said. The marketing “deeply hurt the public, the bereaved families, and the victims of the May 18 demonstration.”

Shares of Shinsegae’s discount retail chain E-Mart 139480.KS, which owns a 67.5% stake in Starbucks Korea that is now called SCK Company, ended down 5.5% at the close of trade in Seoul.

Starbucks Global also issued a statement on Tuesday, saying it was sorry about what had happened and that an investigation had begun.

“We sincerely apologize to the people of Gwangju, to those impacted by this tragedy, and to our customers and communities,” a spokesperson at Starbucks Global said in an email to Reuters.

“Leadership accountability actions have been taken, and a thorough investigation is underway,” the spokesperson said. “We are implementing stronger internal controls, review standards, and company-wide training to ensure this does not happen again.”

Gwangju Uprising, May 18 Democratization Movement (Korean:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Uprising

The Gwangju Uprising, also known in South Korea as May 18 Democratization Movement (Korean: 오일팔 민주화 운동),[b] was a series of student-led demonstrations that took place in Gwangju, South Korea, in May 1980, against the coup d’état of May Seventeenth by Chun Doo-hwan that strengthened his power. Chun had previously taken power and become military dictator through the coup d’état of December Twelfth at the end of 1979. He implementated martial law, arrested opposition leaders, closed all universities, banned political activities, and suppressed the press. The uprising was violently suppressed by the South Korean military who retook Gwangju. Between 600 and 2,300 people were killed.

    https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/business/companies/20260518/starbucks-under-fire-for-tank-day-promotion-on-gwangju-uprising-annive

18.5.2026 by Ko Dong-hwan - Starbucks Korea faced backlash Monday, as the nation commemorated the May 18 Uprising, for using phrases in a product promotion that were seen as provoking sentiment against the historic event.

The major coffee chain shut down the event amid a flood of online criticism and issued an apology.

The controversial phrases included “Tank Day,” the event’s title, which evoked memories of the military vehicles used by former President Chun Doo-hwan to suppress protesters in Gwangju in 1980. Citizens had risen up against his military regime, demanding an end to martial law and the establishment of a democratic system.

The promotion offered a 10 percent discount on the Colorful Tank Tumbler Set and a 21 percent discount on the Tank Duo Set.

The company admitted that it had discovered “inappropriate phrasing during our promotion of the Dante, Tank and Nasu tumbler series, which was part of our Buddy Week event running from May 15 to 26.”

The promotion also used the phrase “Put it on the table with a sound of ‘Tak!’” — wording that evoked the infamous explanation tied to the 1987 torture death of student activist Park Jong-chul. The incident later became a major catalyst for the country’s democracy movement.

    Photo

At the time, police claimed Park died after investigators struck a desk with a “tak” sound, prompting him to collapse with an “eok” sound — an explanation that later became a widely criticized symbol of the military regime’s attempts to conceal torture and state violence.

Starbucks’ use of these historically sensitive words stirred online backlash and prompted criticism that the promotion abused public sentiment surrounding the 1980 Gwangju Uprising and the death of Park.

A civic group representing victims and bereaved families of the Gwangju uprising accused Starbucks Korea of “damaging the spirit of the democracy movement through a shallow understanding of history.”

“We strongly condemn Starbucks Korea and urge the company to provide a proper explanation and apology,” the group said in a statement.

Starbucks Korea responded by suspending the event, saying, “We sincerely apologize for causing concern and discomfort to customers.”

The latest incident is stirring long-standing criticisms of Chung Yong-jin, the conservative chairman of Shinsegae. Emart, an affiliate of Shinsegae Group, is the largest shareholder of Starbucks Korea. Online users have been resharing Chung’s past posts captioned with the hashtag “myeolgong,” meaning eradicate communism.

In that sense, Kwon Young-kook, chairman of the minor opposition Justice Party, said, “this controversy cannot be dismissed as a mere coincidence or mistake. Chung has never tried to hide his far-right leanings,” adding that “the owner’s usual conduct should be seen as having encouraged such wording during the approval and review process.”

Amid the backlash, Chung dismissed Starbucks Korea CEO Sohn Jeong-hyun, who took responsibility for the contentious campaign.

Later in the day, President Lee Jae Myung, who visited Gwangju for a ceremony commemorating the pro-democracy movement, also criticized Starbucks Korea for holding the event on a date associated with victims of military rule.

“I am outraged by the inhumane behavior of profiteers who deny the values of the Republic of Korea, fundamental human rights and democracy,” Lee wrote on social media platform X.

The lenses are mounted in metal helicoid mounts, unlike lenses for the other bellows-focusing Linhof cameras. For this reason all front lens standard movements of other Linhof models are not available, however back movements remain for increased depth of field. Focusing is by a combined rangefinder-viewfinder.

Together with the 4x5 Super Technika, the Technika Press won the Grand Prix at the 1957 Tri-annual Exposition in Milan[1]. Linhof advertised that “[c]ameras in addition to the TECHNIKA PRESS are superfluous”, and emphasized its usefulness for sports and press photographers, besides being so easy to handle that “even a girl can use it without effort”[2]. The Technika Press seems to have inspired the Mamiya Press standard (1960), and was itself replaced by the Linhof Technika Press 70 (1963).

    https://spaceweather.com/archive.php?view=1&day=28&month=04&year=2026

A GIANT ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY EXPERIMENT: Every 16 hours, more or less, a Starlink satellite falls out of the sky. It’s part of the SpaceX business model: Old obsolete satellites re-enter to make way for newer models.

It sounds like a good way to keep Earth orbit from becoming too cluttered, but it comes with a cost. Every Starlink that burns up dumps about 30 kg of aluminum oxide into the upper atmosphere. That aluminum is not supposed to be there.

This histogram of Starlink re-entires is updated daily on Spaceweather.com

So far this year, 171 Starlinks have reentered, adding more than 5 metric tons of aluminum oxide to the stratosphere and mesosphere. How does this compare to natural sources?

The primary natural source is meteoroids — the same “shooting stars” that streak across the night sky. As they burn up between roughly 75 and 110 km, they release a faint dusting of metals. Recent studies suggest that meteoroids disperse between 40,000 kg and 58,000 kg of Al₂O₃ into the atmosphere each year. Starlink in 2026 is on track to add between 26% and 39% of that natural total.

39% may not sound too bad, but consider the following: The size of the Starlink constellation is rapidly increasing, and SpaceX’s competitors are racing to catch up. A full buildout of planned megaconstellations with corresponding re-entries could inject more than 360,000 kg of Al₂O₃ per year — a 640% excess above natural meteoroids (Ferreira et al. 2024).

It all adds up to a giant uncontrolled experiment in atmospheric chemistry. Researchers already know that aluminum oxides can destroy ozone in a complex series of steps involving Al₂O₃, HCl, AlCl₃, sunlight, Cl, and O₃. Other side-effects may reveal themselves in time.

  • A new space race could turn our atmosphere into a ‘crematorium for satellites’
    https://theconversation.com/a-new-space-race-could-turn-our-atmosphere-into-a-crematorium-for-s

When we look up at the night sky and see a satellite glide past, we might not consider climate change or the ozone layer.

#Space may feel separate from the environmental systems that sustain life on Earth. But increasingly, the way we build, launch and dispose of satellites is starting to change that.

Over the past few years, the number of #satellite launches has skyrocketed. There are now nearly 15,000 active satellites in orbit around the #Earth, most of them part of “#mega-constellations” in which each satellite has a service life of only a few years.

    #spacex #starlink #boeing #falcon9 #ozone #fcc

The timeline on this is genuinely insane.

October 2025: Sam #Altman flies to #Seoul and signs simultaneous deals with #Samsung and #SK #Hynix for 900,000 DRAM wafers per month. That’s 40% of global supply. Neither company knew the other was signing a near-identical commitment at the same time.

Those deals were letters of intent. Non-binding. No RAM actually changed hands. But the market treated them as gospel. Contract #DRAM prices jumped 171%. A 64GB DDR5 kit went from $190 to $700 in three months.

December 2025: Micron kills #Crucial, its 29-year-old consumer memory brand, to reallocate every wafer to AI and enterprise customers. The company explicitly said it was exiting consumer memory to “improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments.” Translation: the AI demand signal was so loud that selling RAM to #PC builders stopped making financial sense.

March 2026: #Google publishes #TurboQuant, a #compression #algorithm that reduces #AI #memory #requirements by 6x with zero accuracy loss. #Cloudflare's CEO called it “#Google's #DeepSeek.” The entire thesis that AI would consume infinite memory forever just got a six-month expiration date on it.

Same month: #OpenAI and #Oracle #cancel the #Abilene #Stargate expansion. The $500 billion data center vision that justified the #RAM deals couldn’t survive its own financing terms. Bloomberg attributed the collapse partly to OpenAI’s “often-changing demand forecasting.”

#MU is now down ~33% from its post-earnings high. Revenue up 196% year over year, #EPS up 682%, and the stock is in freefall because the company restructured its entire business around a demand signal that came from non-binding letters and is now being compressed out of existence by a research paper.

#Micron bet the consumer division on #Sam_Altman's signature. The signature was worth exactly what the paper said: nothing binding.

Landmark enforcement at #Ningbo signals zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized satellite comms

By Paul Morgan (gCaptain) – In a watershed moment for maritime telecommunications regulation, Chinese authorities have penalized a foreign vessel for illegally operating SpaceX’s Starlink internet service within territorial waters — the first enforcement action of its kind that signals Beijing’s determination to control satellite communications in its maritime jurisdiction.

Maritime law enforcement officers at Ningbo port in Zhejiang province discovered the violation during a routine inspection when they spotted a distinctive “micro rectangular antenna” mounted on the vessel’s top deck. The Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration confirmed the device was a low-Earth orbit satellite terminal that had continued transmitting data after the ship entered Chinese waters, directly violating national telecommunications regulations.

While authorities did not disclose the vessel’s identity or the exact penalty amount, the case represents a significant escalation in China’s enforcement of satellite communication restrictions at sea. Ma Yanchao, director of the command centre at the Ningbo Maritime Safety Administration, made the government’s intentions clear: “We will take this landmark first case as an opportunity to continue to intensify enforcement against illegal radio communication activities in our jurisdiction.”

Starlink crosses the imaginary line because it has never been licensed to operate in China, where foreign telecommunications services face stringent controls. Chinese law requires all network traffic within the country to pass through state-managed gateways, but Starlink transmits data directly to foreign satellites, bypassing domestic infrastructure entirely. Beijing views this as a fundamental threat to national communication security and data sovereignty.

The prohibition isn’t merely theoretical. Under Chinese regulations, any radio device or frequency usage requires official approval, and Starlink terminals — functioning as radio transceivers — have never received this permission. A direct-to-device satellite services regulation that took effect in June 2025 further strengthened these controls, closing potential loopholes.

For vessels, the rules are unambiguous: Starlink terminals must be deactivated before entering Chinese territorial waters, typically defined as within 12 nautical miles of the coast. However, enforcement has historically been challenging due to difficulties in tracking and identifying satellite transmissions at sea.

The timing couldn’t be more significant for the maritime industry. Ningbo-Zhoushan ranks as the world’s busiest port by cargo tonnage, handling millions of vessels annually. Many international ships have adopted Starlink for its superior speeds compared to traditional maritime satellite systems, using it for navigation support, crew welfare, operational communications, and logistics coordination.

The Ningbo Daily report acknowledged that enforcing restrictions on foreign satellite equipment has been difficult, and many international vessels may have continued using Starlink within Chinese waters, with relevant violations long remaining unaddressed. This first penalty suggests those days are over.

Maritime operators now face a stark choice: switch to approved alternatives like China’s Beidou navigation system or local cellular networks when approaching Chinese waters, or risk substantial fines, equipment confiscation, potential vessel detention, and costly operational delays. For an industry operating on tight margins and precise schedules, compliance adds yet another layer of complexity to Chinese port calls.

China’s aggressive stance on Starlink extends beyond simple regulatory compliance. Beijing has intensified concerns about the constellation since witnessing its effectiveness in providing battlefield communications during the Ukraine conflict. Chinese military researchers have published numerous papers on potential countermeasures against Starlink, including methods to track and potentially neutralize the satellites.

Meanwhile, China is developing competing domestic satellite internet systems. State-owned China SatNet has launched 60 satellites for its planned 13,000-satellite Guowang constellation, while the Shanghai-backed Qianfan project has deployed 90 satellites toward a 15,000-satellite target. These initiatives underscore Beijing’s determination to maintain autonomous control over critical communication technologies.

The enforcement action also reflects broader tensions over global digital infrastructure. Starlink operates in over 140 countries and has become essential for maritime connectivity worldwide. But in China, along with Russia, Iran, and North Korea, it remains firmly blocked.

Looking ahead, the message for maritime operators from Ningbo is unambiguous: satellite connectivity must bow to sovereignty. With Chinese authorities pledging intensified inspections and enforcement, ship operators calling at Chinese ports should audit their communications equipment now, establish clear protocols for deactivating prohibited systems, and train crews on compliance requirements.

The broader implications extend beyond individual vessels. As satellite internet becomes increasingly integral to maritime operations globally, this enforcement action highlights a fundamental tension between borderless technology and territorial jurisdiction. With trade volumes between China and the rest of the world continuing to surge, expect more vessels to face the choice between connectivity and compliance.

For now, when approaching the world’s busiest ports, going dark isn’t just advisable — it’s the law.
