Remember the #Fulda_Gap! Fulda was a legendary spot in West Germany where during the Cold War, U.S. forces stood ready to stop the Soviets as they pounded their way into Europe. And now amid tensions with Russia it looks like the gap is back, at least in spirit, though it has moved a little bit to the east according to Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, commander of the 30,000 U.S. soldiers in Europe. Hodges told FP’s Paul McLeary about the “#Suwalki_Gap,” a narrow strip of Polish territory that sits in the seam between the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad to the northwest and Moscow-friendly nation of Belarus to the southeast, which has become the latest potential flashpoint between an increasingly aggressive Moscow and NATO.

Kaliningrad has long bristled with thousands of Russian troops and advanced weapons, while Belarus recently agreed to house a large Russian air base, making the Suwalki area a small vulnerable land bridge increasingly squeezed by Russian hardware. Hodges acknowledges, “that’s an important piece of geography right there.”

Up to 57 percent of families in Tripoli are “impoverished,” including 26 percent that are “extremely impoverished.” These families are concentrated in poverty-stricken neighborhoods like #Bab_al-Tabbaneh and #Suwaiqa, where 87 percent of households are in deprivation, compared to 19 percent in the Basatine district for example. Meanwhile, neighborhoods said to be in a “transitional situation” are vulnerable to gradual impoverishment transforming them from middle-class neighborhoods to slums, such as al-Tall and Zahrieh.

Dubai: Prominent Kuwaiti intellectual, motivational speaker and preacher Tareq Suwaidan has been barred from performing the lesser Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, he said on Twitter.

“I have been banned from entering Saudi Arabia solely for my views and my position against the coup in Egypt, and I say that my love for Saudi Arabia and its people is unshaken and that ideas can [never] be banned,” Suwaidan wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday.

On Tuesday, Suwaidan tweeted: “I have known the people of Saudi Arabia to be the most hospitable of people, therefore I consider those who told me that I am not welcome not to be representing true Saudi hospitality”. He later wrote: “Averros said that ideas have wings to fly with. I say: I wish he had seen Twitter to see how right he was”.

Entretien avec une grande directrice de la photographie du cinéma français (Godard, Lanzmann, Carax, etc). Première partie.

Cette place a une histoire : comme vous le savez, les metteurs en scène des années 1950 s’adressaient a un directeur de la photographie et à un cadreur. Le cadreur faisait souvent partie de l’équipe du directeur photo, mais cela n’empêchait pas une certaine triangulation. A l’arrivée de la Nouvelle Vague, ces jeunes metteurs en scène ont décidé qu’ils ne s’adresseraient plus qu’à une seule personne, le « chef opérateur », nouvelle figure de la cinématographie dont la génération de mes pères, et même un peu avant, fait partie. Personnellement, je préfère le terme de « directeur de la photographie ».

Si je suis fortement attachée au cadre, c’est donc aussi parce que le cadrage est lié à ce moment où le rythme des actes du plateau se modifie, où le temps devient celui des acteurs, dont je deviens spectatrice. Il y a alors une acuité extraordinaire de tous mes sens vers ce photogramme qui est aujourd’hui devenu une cible, malheureusement. En occupant cette place, on éprouve presque quelque chose de spirituel. La place du spectateur, qu’il s’agisse de la vôtre ou de la mienne à ce moment précis, est une place de grâce car nous recevons quelque chose. C’est peut-être en ce sens que Godard disait que le cinéma aurait pu devenir un culte.
