An activist group on Tuesday published a database of information on suspected chemical attacks in Syria , adding to a growing collection of videos and images documenting alleged war crimes during the seven-year conflict.
The Syrian Archive, which works with human rights groups such as Amnesty International, said it has verified 861 videos covering some 212 attacks — most of them believed to have been carried out by government forces.
The material comes from 193 sources and much of it was uploaded to social media by ordinary Syrians, the group’s co-founder, Hadi al-Khatib, told an audience in Berlin.
Al-Khatib, who has lived in Germany since 2014, said the group wants to preserve sensitive material from disappearing , so that it might eventually be used to bring those responsible for war crimes to trial. But the team, which is spread across Europe and the Middle East, also wants to “add value” to the raw material, such as by determining the location where a video was taken and, most importantly, verifying that it shows what is claimed.
The Syrian Archive cooperates with the open source journalism site Bellingcat that has made a name for itself forensically examining footage from war zones.
While most of the chemical attacks documented by the group are alleged to have been carried out by forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, including most recently in the town of Douma near Damascus, a handful have been attributed to rebel forces and the Islamic State extremist group, said Abdulrahman al-Jaloud, one of the Syrian Archive’s researchers.
Al-Khatib said he and fellow activists try not to get disheartened by the fact that efforts to bring those responsible for war crimes in Syria to trial have so far been unsuccessful.
“That doesn’t mean we should stop,” he said. “We are looking forward to the day when we can use this material, because the reconstruction of Syria must include acknowledging, investigating and prosecuting crimes.”

Il en résulta une farce sanglante, désormais ensevelie sous les gravats de cette ville martyrisée par une guerre impitoyable que provoqua l’appétit de domination impérialiste allié au fanatisme sponsorisé de desperados crétinisés jusqu’au dernier centimètre cube de leur cerveau. Le pire n’est jamais sûr, dit-on, mais on eut droit à tout ce qu’il était possible de faire, y compris l’inimaginable ! Des dirigeants occidentaux qui prétendent combattre les terroristes tout en leur procurant des armes au nom des droits de l’homme. Des puissances étrangères qui infligent un embargo sur les médicaments à des populations civiles coupables de ne pas combattre leur gouvernement. Des familles royales sanguinaires et débauchées qui donnent des leçons de démocratie tout en sponsorisant la terreur. Des intellectuels français qui exigent comme un impératif moral le bombardement d’un pays qui ne nous a rien fait. C’est un triste privilège, mais il faut reconnaître que le drame syrien a généré un impressionnant florilège de saloperies.

Ah non, on me dit dans le poste que les journalistes ne peuvent pas aller là où les combats sont les plus violents et que donc on n’aura pas d’images de ces endroits là, mais comme c’est les gentils qui sont à l’attaque, là, c’est normal qu’on montre pas des immeubles détruits.
Vive la Guerre demandée à corps et à cris par les vrais progressistes (pas les faux qui sont sur SeenThis) qui s’émeuvent quand on leur montre dans leur vrai Twitter qui ne ment pas les vraies atrocités des destructions faites par les vrais méchants. Parce que les vraies destructions des vrais méchants, elles ne parviennent pas à couper l’Internet des vrais gentils qui nous montrent peut être leur dernière vidéo de leur vraie vie.

Après quatre ans de guerre, la bataille d’Alep reste cruciale pour l’avenir de la Syrie. Assiégés depuis septembre par les forces progouvernementales dans la partie est de la ville, les insurgés appartiennent essentiellement à des mouvements islamistes. Mais leurs milices n’ont pas le monopole de la radicalisation, de l’intégration de combattants étrangers ou du discours religieux.
La multitude et la diversité des acteurs armés qui participent à la bataille d’Alep, et dont beaucoup viennent de l’étranger, expliquent la durée et l’extension du conflit syrien. Pour rendre compte de la situation, il importe d’éviter les simplifications dans la terminologie employée au sujet des combattants. Identifier tant les troupes « rebelles » que les forces qui soutiennent l’armée régulière suppose aussi de comprendre leurs idéologies et leurs projets politiques. Les informations recueillies auprès de chercheurs et de personnes présentes sur le terrain peuvent cependant diverger, en particulier quant au nombre de combattants. Il convient donc de les prendre avec précaution.
S’agissant de l’opposition armée au régime de M. Bachar Al-Assad, on discerne trois types de groupes : ceux qui combattent de façon autonome, ceux qui fusionnent entre eux et ceux qui coordonnent leurs assauts à travers une « chambre d’opérations » (ghourfat al’âmaliyyat). À Alep-Est, où vivraient encore environ 250 000 personnes, ainsi que dans les bastions rebelles proches, deux « chambres d’opérations » principales rassemblent au total entre 10 000 et 20 000 hommes. La première, baptisée Jaïch Al-Fatah (Armée de la conquête), représente près d’un tiers des soldats rebelles. Elle est notamment composée du Front Fatah Al-Cham, l’ex-Front Al-Nosra (la branche syrienne d’Al-Qaida), et de ses alliés.
Plus modérée, la coalition Fatah Halab (Conquête d’Alep) rassemble plusieurs factions proches des Frères musulmans ou affiliées à l’Armée syrienne libre (ASL). Cette coalition représenterait environ la moitié des effectifs qui combattent le régime et ses alliés dans la région, selon Fabrice Balanche, maître de conférences à l’université Lyon-II. Les 15 à 20 % restants correspondent à une dizaine de petits groupes indépendants sans idéologie clairement affichée, qui gravitent autour de ces deux pôles majeurs (voir la carte ci-dessous).

The Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, is a coalition of Kurdish, Sunni Arab and Syriac Christian fighters, but is completely dominated by its Kurdish element, which is a powerful and well organized militia known as the Popular Defense Units, YPG, with an all-female branch called the Women’s Defense Units, or YPJ. These organizations, in turn, are Syrian front groups for the Kurdistan Workers’ Party or PKK. The other militias involved in the Syrian Democratic Forces are either long-standing PKK allies or proxies, such as the armed wing of the Syriac Union Party, or more recent allies drawn from the Sunni Arab tribal landscape in this part of Syria and from the remains of small Sunni Arab rebel groups crushed by the so-called Islamic State.
The coalition as a whole receives American air support for operations against Islamic State, as did the YPG/J before it. That started in the Battle of Kobane that began in autumn 2014, which was enormously successful—really the first major battlefield defeat inflicted on Islamic State. It has provided the template for US-PKK cooperation. In addition, the Pentagon has picked out a number of these little Arab groups that work under the SDF umbrella as favored recipients of arms and support. It terms them, collectively, the Syrian Arab Coalition, though no one else seems to use that name.
The coalition is equally useful for the YPG/J and the PKK more generally, not only because they get arms and other kinds of support. It also helps rehabilitate them politically and provides a great platform to engage in public diplomacy. Since the creation of the Syrian Democratic Forces, they’ve set up a political branch called the Democratic Syrian Assembly, DSA. This is made up of two main components. [...]
The other main element of the SDF is a loose network of Syrian leftists and other secular activists, most of them connected in one way or another to Haytham Manna, a Europe-based human rights activist from the Deraa Governorate in southern Syria. These groups—particularly Manna himself—are well versed in regional Syria diplomacy, with useful links to all sides, including the opposition, European states, U.N. diplomats, parts of the Arab League, Egypt, Russia and so on. On the other hand, they are not popular in the broader Sunni Arab and more Islamist-dominated Turkey- and Gulf-backed opposition that forms the mainstay of the rebellion against Bashar al-Assad.[...]
Manna has now been elected one of two co-presidents of the DSA, operating in exile. llham Ahmed from TEV-DEM holds the other seat, although the longstanding PYD leader Saleh Muslim Mohammed is far more visible as a representative of this segment of Syrian Kurdish politics. The fact that Ahmed and Muslim are more or less interchangeable in diplomatic talks, despite belonging to two different organizations, is of course because both actually represent the “hidden” PKK structure that underpins the whole political order in northern Syria’s Kurdish areas. Though the interests of Manna’s people and the Kurdish bloc might not correspond perfectly, they are closely allied and have been so even before the creation of the SDF and the DSA. They have fundamentally shared interests in a secular and multisectarian Syria, with minimal Turkish and Gulf state influence, but with some role for Russia to balance out American or Saudi hegemony.

je viens de regarder les deux vidéos, j’ai aussi fait quelques recherches sur Internet et consulté quelques sites, écouté une interview supplémentaire du musicien (il dit sur son compte twitter qu’il est graphic designer).
Son témoignage avec sa compagne Lyn m’a profondément ému, et je ne sais pas trop pourquoi. Écoutez le parler. Le ton, le rythme, son humour, sa simplicité, sa modestie. On le sens en même temps fort et serein dans l’adversité.
Voilà, j’en suis tout retourné. C’est un hasard mais il y a deux jours j’ai rencontré, au cours d’une soirée organisée par la Croix Rouge, un groupe de réfugiés syriens fraichement arrivés en Norvège. L’un d’eux, un journaliste et réalisateur me disait qu’ils ne voulaient pas ni l’aumône, ni être plaint, ni prendre le pain des norvégiens, ni leurs filles et ni leurs femmes : Ils ont de l’argent, des contacts, éventuellement un réseau d’entre aide. Non, ce dont ils ont besoin de toute urgence, c’est d’une putain de protection juridique, un putain de bordel de merde d’équivalent de passeport Nansen ou assimilé, et qu on arrête de les obliger à voyager dans ces conditions aussi épouvantables et dangereuses.
Oui, ce témoignage est très très bien... et très émouvant.

LESBOS, GREECE – A wooden boat carrying dozens of migrants from Turkey to Europe sank Thursday near the island of Lesbos after colliding with a Greek coast guard vessel, leaving at least seven people dead, including four children, rescuers said.
The boat sank within minutes of the crash with a 30-meter (100-foot) patrol vessel on Thursday morning, in circumstances that were being investigated.
J’ai vu le « full documentary » ce soir et c’est vraiment un témoignage incroyable... moi qui déteste le metal, qui ne supporte même pas 1 minute de ces sons que je trouve inaudibles... eh bhein, j’ai adoré le film, et ces musiciens qui contre tout et tout le monde, malgré la guerre, les bombes et les snipers, se retrouvent sous-terre à faire des concerts, à Alep, à Homs, ou dans d’autres villes détruites par la guerre.
Chapeau.
C’est un magnifique témoignage de comment #la_vie_continue, malgré la #guerre et la #destruction, dit un musicien.
C’est triste de savoir que ce film n’a passé la barre d’aucun festival. C’est plus que triste, en fait, c’est... je ne sais même pas ce que c’est...

The film is in no means extensive; it was filmed with a mobile phone and DSLR. Production, travelling, filming, and editing were minimal and utilized DIY methods. It was a personal endeavour and hence naturally limited to my own resources. The footage and project traveled with me across continents, starting in Syria and following through to Algeria, Turkey, Greece, and the Netherlands. I carried it with me while applying for asylum, and it kept me going despite being entirely depleted of both will and resources to continue. Sam Zamrik believed in the project since its conception and its possible effects in bringing exposure to this small, down-trodden Syrian community. He worked on the linguistic presentation of the film, including interviews, translations, and creative writing. Through crowd funding efforts, our friends in Switzerland managed to raise enough money for gear to edit and actually finish the film. Having finalized the film, my intent was to submit it to international festivals, since they would bring the most exposure to the artists. The intended runtime was two hours, but, having to accommodate festivals standards, I cut that to an hour and a half. Despite doing that, it wasn’t accepted. After several tries, I decided to bring the film to its audience; those who are truly interested, who have donated and supported us, and those in the film themselves. The film is now on YouTube. It is accessible to everyone for free. It now belongs to you and what you make of it. Having said that, we will be wholeheartedly accepting donations to the film, as opposed to ticket sales or any revenue.

The Syrian army and its allied forces are continuing the battle to besiege neighborhoods under the control of the opposition in the city of Aleppo, and to break the siege around the towns of #Nubl and #al-Zahraa in the city’s northern countryside — a move significant for its timing. The operation is reminiscent of the army’s surrounding of #Eastern_Ghouta, on April 7, 2013, which sought to prevent attacks on the nearby capital, and besieged the fighters. Starting yesterday, the army has been trying to perform the same feat in Aleppo, the capital of northern #syria.
