Scrum, backlog management, refinement, you probably already know all about these methods, but what makes someone a really good Product Manager? On a side note: the #scrum manual originally uses the term Product Owner, but many companies use the term Product Manager as they fill this position with a broader role that includes stakeholder management. There are many type of Product Managers. In my years as product manager and coach I’ve met many different and wonderful people in this role, with various backgrounds ranging from UX design to HR. As the market matures, scrum and in-house #development have become the standard, and most companies have started to look more critically at the skill set required for Product Management positions. The perfect time to reflect on what makes a good product (...)

The Pros and Cons Of Pair ProgrammingLessons From My Summer At Menlo InnovationsPhoto by Gemma Evans on UnsplashMany programmers are skeptical about pair programming: The agile software development technique in which two programmers work at one workstation. This is the type of feedback I often hear:“That seems like a total waste of money because you’re writing half as much code as two programmers, on separate computers.”Or“I’m an introverted person. I would hate to have to interact with a partner at work constantly.”These are fair concerns. I might’ve shared these opinions before working at a pair programming company.See at my last job — software development at Menlo Innovations — you’re not allowed to write code by yourself. If you’re working on production code, you need a partner. And after working (...)

8 Ways To Start Becoming A Better Leader

Being an effective business leader takes years of practice. The primary reason it takes so long is because effective #leadership means being able to balance a number of skills, all of which require their own learning curve. In fact, “skills” isn’t even the best word for it. They’re really more virtues than anything else.Though different leadership styles can be used at different times to build and run an effective business, these eight character traits should be universal in each and every leader:1. Self-awarenessOne of the most important characteristics of a business leader is self-awareness, and the ability to understand your own strengths and weaknesses.Very often, I run into leaders and aspiring entrepreneurs that make the mistake of going to great lengths to cover up their weaknesses —  (...)

How to understand your client, why it’s important to write everything down and what are the advantages of perfectionist managersCSSSR doesn’t have an office and will never have one, while our team consists of dozens of people, who are sometimes located halfway across the world from each other. Nevertheless, all of them are officially employed and work full-time.For more than 6 years we’ve been developing front-end: methodically writing HTML/CSS, courageously implementing complicated JavaScript code, meticulously testing — all completely remotely.Through years of experience we’ve defined 5 main precepts of remote management.1. What is not written down — does not existFor us Internet is the main and only space for communication with a client. Therefore the rule of “putting verbal agreements in (...)

Image credit to Davin EdvardWhen entering the world of coding, you will quickly realize how essential team work really is. Though this begs a new question, if team work is a complete necessity in the coding world, why do MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) not provide a team working aspect to them? Would it even be feasible to include a team work portion to these #programming courses? These courses, known as MOOCs, offered by Coursera, Edx, Udacity and many other sources provide excellent instruction to help an individual hone their coding skills. There are discussion boards to ask for help along with great reading resources to reference in order to provide help through each assignment. They encourage the use of Stack Overflow. These courses are great to help with mastery of the “hard (...)

Poe knows a fair bit about automatingThere is a plethora of products who want to help us with running our application in the cloud. Unfortunately, none of them covers the entirety of what we need. Sometimes we need to bring our own server. Or they take care of hosting but we can’t access the underlying infrastructure. So not only we pay for them, bet on closed-source software and there are handling only a fraction of what we need.I’m sharing a full Terraform and #docker configuration that lets you provision AWS and deploy Laravel / Nginx / MySQL / Redis / ElasticSearch from scratch, in a few commands. We’ll be doing this using Infrastructure-as-code and Configuration-as-code, for the process to be repeatable, shareable and documented.A word about automating: automating is the only way we (...)

How to Increase Project Team Energy Levels

I recently talked with an engineer about some work that he was doing for a state agency, and he seemed about as excited as a burnt piece of toast. He mentioned that he avoids project managers like the plague. I understand that, stereotypically speaking, engineers may not be the most charismatic of individuals. And I’m fully aware that project managers are not always the most beloved employees. But the conversation caused me to wonder if project managers are missing an opportunity. Are you getting your project teams excited about their work? One of the most important drivers of project success is the energy and focus that the team members bring to a project. People talk about hours and costs. They don’t talk about energy. And yet, the reality is that for humans, not all hours are equal. (...)

Finally you can share #docker machines — without a script

Docker Machine is the single easiest way to provision a new Docker host or machine. I use it to setup new remote staging servers and it takes a minute at most. It selects an appropriate Linux distribution for the Docker Engine and installs the Docker daemon, all in one go.It can do all of this with 15 different cloud providers! You can set up a server in any of them, using the same simple command docker-machine create. For example, if you’re using #aws, Docker Machine calls the AWS API on your behalf to create an EC2 instance into your AWS account.— it’s blazing fast — the command line is dead simple — it manages all of the SSH keys and TLS certificates even if you have dozens of servers — makes your servers immediately ready for Docker deploymentsBut there’s one pain… It can only store all of its (...)
