Tout au long de cet album, Tore Rørbæk et Mikkel Sommer donnent corps à un peuple méconnu, victime de la barbarie, et tentent de faire la lumière sur ces éléments souvent passés sous silence...

Les Chagos se trouvent au cœur d’un litige vieux de cinq décennies, depuis la décision britannique de séparer en 1965 cet archipel de l’île Maurice et d’y installer une base militaire commune avec les Etats-Unis sur l’île principale de Diego Garcia.

Cinglant revers pour le Royaume-Uni. Le 22 mai 2019, à l’Assemblée générale de l’ONU, une majorité de pays lui a demandé de rétrocéder l’archipel des Chagos à l’île Maurice, d’ici au mois de novembre. L’ensemble, constitué de 55 îles, abrite une base conjointe britannique et américaine, stratégique.

Initiée par les autorités mauriciennes de Port-Louis, une résolution de rétrocession, non contraignante, mais à forte valeur politique, a été adoptée par 116 pays, six s’exprimant contre, dont le Royaume-Uni, les Etats-Unis, l’Australie et la Hongrie. Cinquante-six Etats ont choisi l’abstention. Les pays africains ont, en revanche, voté massivement en faveur de la résolution.

In May 1988, the Times of India (ToI) reported on an issue riling readers of Pakistan Times, a now defunct newspaper that was then owned by the Pakistani government. This was the name of the Indian Ocean which they felt was unfairly linked to this country simply because “by calling itself India the country seemed to have become heir to the entire history of the subcontinent.”

One writer felt that the fairer approach would be to limit the use of India up to August 1947 and after that “what remained outside Pakistan and Bangladesh should be called Bharat.” But since the Indian government had not been so obliging, writers felt Pakistan should not go along with this historical and geographic appropriation and should stop using the term “Indian Ocean’.

Environmental action group Greenpeace is facing a fundraising crisis in Taiwan after it included the island in a map of China.

Taiwan has been a self-ruling political entity since 1950, but China claims the territory and has pushed the international community to break official ties with the Taiwanese government.

Greenpeace apologized and said it was an error, but the public statement didn’t stop Taiwanese from making their anger known on the organization’s official Facebook page and calling on their compatriots to stop donating.

NGO workers also speculated that the inclusion wasn’t actually a mistake, but a consequence of China’s foreign NGO management law, which requires groups operating in the country to have a government entity sponsor.

When it comes to maps, China isn’t messing around.

Starting next year, you don’t want to be caught with the “wrong” maps—that is, maps containing content “that endangers the country’s sovereignty, safety and interests,” according to a statement by China’s government mapping official Le Weibin.

In an effort to “boost” the mapmaking industry—and clamp down on maps that run counter to the government’s stance on issues like Taiwan’s independence and the territorial dispute over the South China Sea—China announced new regulations earlier this year on the creation, distribution, and publication of both print and online maps. The government will be monitoring maps for violations like “errors in compilation” and “leaks of secret geographic information and personal information,” according to China’s official state media, Xinhua.

Also included in this new set of regulations, which will replace mapping laws drawn up in 1995, is a section dedicated to regulating the fairly young industry of online mapping. It requires all online mapping data to be hosted by servers inside the country, and all GPS providers to obtain a cartography certificate.

Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) The Ministry of the Interior said Tuesday that it is set to complete a project to map the islands in the disputed South China Sea region and will produce a map of the islands that are claimed by the Republic of China and various other countries.

The ministry said that since 2011, it has been carrying out on-site measurements of the islands and has also used high-definition satellite images to obtain spatial information about the islands.

So far, the ministry has invested about NT$80 million (US$2.66 million) in the project and has completed the mapping of 198 of the islands in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, it said. It is expected to complete the project by the end of 2015, it added.
