In the eye of the storm: Niger and its unstable neighbors

A poor, sun-scorched Sahel country, #Niger is rapidly becoming a key U.S. and Western counterterrorism ally. The former French colony already hosts French troops, and, as part of its #TransSahara_Counter-Terrorism_Initiative, the United States is building a
$100 million drone base there to monitor and respond to terrorist activities across the Sahel. Germany is also building a military outpost in Niger to support the U.N. mission in #Mali.

The US military is building a $100 million drone base in central Niger
DAKAR, Sept 30 (Reuters) - The United States military said on Friday it is building a $100 million temporary base for surveillance drones in #Agadez, central Niger, to help the West African country combat militant groups and protect its borders.

U.S. Helping Niger Halt Spread of Terror in Region
The unfortunately politicized debate prompted by the death two weeks ago of four U.S. soldiers in Niger has revealed a great deal of ignorance about what, precisely, the U.S. is doing in Niger and why. The truth is that while its policy is debatable, the U.S. is right to be involved in Niger and support it in its fight against violent Islamist extremists.

US steps up commitment in Niger with launch of armed #drones
The United States has said says it wants to start flying armed drones in Niger within days.
The two countries finalized a deal this week allowing Washington to use armed drones against armed groups in northern Niger.
This comes after the death of US and Niger soldiers in an ambush last October.
Emmanuel Dupuy, President of the Paris-based Institute for European Prospective Studies, told RFI’s Christina Okello, this signals an increased American role in Niger.
