The Suspended spaces collective has worked for the past two years on an architectural ensemble of Oscar Niemeyer : the Rashid Karamé International Fair of Tripoli, in Lebanon. The construction of this modern project began in 1962 and was never completed. The beginning of the civil war in 1975 had frozen the site in its incomplete state.
What can be done now with this architectural heritage? The gaze, the attention that we have brought to these places, the works which have been carried out in connection with the site, contribute to the understanding of issues of such a space in suspense.
The discussions developed in Beirut and Paris, the intervowen experiences in Cyprus, Lebanon, and Brazil, stressed on how much we are the children of a common modernity, but also how much we have often been blind to the diversity of its manifestations.
This book, the third in a series begun in 2010, brings toghether twenty three artists and nineteen researchers.

▻http://www.slate.fr/story/99465/france-tripartisme-droitisation

Conflict Over #al-Tal_Square: Is #Tripoli Poised to Become Another #Beirut?
There is debate underway in Tripoli today as to what should happen to the city’s al-Tal Square. The debate is not concerned with possible ways to conserve the square as part of the city’s memory and heritage, or to preserve the historical character of the place — “the heart of the city,” as the people of Tripoli call it. The “developmental” discussions focus, rather, on choosing what project will be constructed in the square. On Tuesday, the municipality of Tripoli rejected a proposed parking lot, intended to start construction early next month, and instead accepted a Turkish donation of $50 million to construct a cultural and conference (...)

#Egypt’s Misguided Drive to Wage War on the ‘Islamic State’ in #Libya
▻http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/23828
There is no pride in Egypt’s response to the fate of its hostages. It is being lured into an open-ended battle by the Islamic State (IS) group in Libya, a sprawling organization in a fragmented country. On the other hand, perhaps the Egyptian government was seeking out this battle and is seizing on the execution of 21 #Copts on February 15 as an opportunity and pretext to obtain popular endorsement to wage this battle — exactly as what happened in Jordan.

Almost 85 Percent of Families in #Tripoli Living in Deprivation

Up to 57 percent of families in Tripoli are “impoverished,” including 26 percent that are “extremely impoverished.” These families are concentrated in poverty-stricken neighborhoods like #Bab_al-Tabbaneh and #Suwaiqa, where 87 percent of households are in deprivation, compared to 19 percent in the Basatine district for example. Meanwhile, neighborhoods said to be in a “transitional situation” are vulnerable to gradual impoverishment transforming them from middle-class neighborhoods to slums, such as al-Tall and Zahrieh.

▻http://seenthis.net/messages/309628
