Fab is the successor to the Unreal Engine Marketplace and Sketchfab Store, and the new home for Quixel Megascans. This new open marketplace supports all types of creators with content for use across Unreal Engine, Unity 3D, Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and other digital content creation tools. Unreal Engine developers will be able to access Fab directly in the Unreal Engine 5 Editor, and Fornite creators can discover Fortnite ready assets through Fab in UEFN. The Fab integration in UEFN is undergoing maintenance and will be back online shortly, and the Fab integration in the Unreal Engine 5 Editor is coming soon.

Some of Russian tech’s heaviest hitters, including homegrown Facebook alternative VKontakte, have recently been cajoling ministers to allocate potentially billions of rubles to fund a Russian “national game engine”, per a Kommersant report. A source close to the Russian government claims that Russian tech titans are deep in talks with the Ministry of Digital Development to fund an alternative to game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine, in the wake of western tech’s exodus from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.

late 2017, development studio TT Games began work on Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga at a time when dozens inside the company were at odds with management. Citing frustration over tight development schedules, the company’s crunch culture, and outdated development tools, more than 20 current and former TT Games employees tell Polygon that calls for change over the years had largely been ignored.

In late January, roughly 30 current and former TT Games employees spoke anonymously to Polygon (and myself) about the culture of crunch and mismanagement at both its Knutsford and Wilmslow offices. The final report highlighted instances of premeditated crunch, mishandled projects, and allegations of sexual harassment that occurred under the company’s former management, in addition to complaints of micro-management under the new leadership that had arrived from Sony. Former employees claimed these factors were responsible for a large turnover of staff over the last few years, with at least forty people leaving the two studios since the beginning of 2021, though that number has since grown considerably.

The company said the project will begin “a new saga for the franchise,” and explained development will be shifting from its proprietary REDengine to Unreal Engine 5 as part of a “multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games.”

That’s a notable pivot given CD Projekt has leveraged REDengine to develop the bulk of its major projects, including Cyberpunk: 2077, The Witcher 3, and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

According to sources who worked at TT Games over the last two decades, overtime at the studio was always presented as voluntary and paid. The company had systems in place for calculating, monitoring, and paying out overtime. Starting in 2010, though, overtime at TT Games was split between two types for every employee: “flexitime” and overtime. Department leads were responsible for determining which hours were which, based on workloads and milestones.

Employees could exchange overtime hours worked for extra pay or days off, while flexitime hours could be exchanged only for late starts or extra holiday. Flexitime also had a 40-hour cap, according to staffers. This meant that employees could hit the limit and not get any benefit for hours they were putting in beyond it, if there was still work that they needed to stay behind and finish.

Several employees say it was extremely difficult to turn down working additional hours. In some cases, employees were warned about consequences if they didn’t pull their weight and told that they were letting others down if they chose not to work, while in other cases, staff felt compelled to take on additional overtime to bolster their salary. Half a dozen staffers told us it was not uncommon to work 80-100 hours, six days a week, while crunching.

Unity, the popular game making tool, has long been used in industries outside of video games. Unity’s site celebrates this versatility, saying its technology offers “incredible possibilities” for film, engineering, architecture, automotive, transportation, and more. 

Unity’s site also proudly lists its technology being used by the government and military, but internal Unity documents obtained by Waypoint show the company is struggling to explain why its employees, who supposedly signed up to create tools that empower game makers, are now directly or inadvertently developing technologies for militaries with the stated objectives of fighting wars.
