Developer Revives Iconic Desktop #weather App for Linux
    ▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/03/developer-revives-iconic-desktop-weather-app-for-linux

An iconic desktop weather app from Linux’s past has just blown in — yes, #typhoon is back! Typhoon’s conceit is simple: display current conditions at a location plus a 4 day forecast on a customisable coloured background. Long long-time OMG! Ubuntu readers may just about recall that Typhoon is a fork of an older app called #stormcloud. Between 2012 and 2013, Stormcloud was one of the best-selling apps on Ubuntu – topping the download chart for 6 consecutive months! Sadly, development on Typhoon dried up not long after it launched, with its dev unable to weather changes to its backend […] You’re reading Developer Revives Iconic Desktop Weather App for Linux, a blog post from OMG! Advanced #weather Companion GNOME Shell Extension
    ▻https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2024/12/advanced-weather-gnome-shell-extension

macOS 15.2 is rolling out today (December 11), and my tech feeds are hyped with its highlights. Among the (non-AI) changes I spotted: the option to display weather info in the menu bar – native, built-in, ready to go. Seeing a “news peg” (as they’re called), I figured I’d use that as motivation to get around to writing about Advanced Weather Companion, yet-another GNOME Shell weather extension that shows temperature and current conditions in the top bar. It’s been in my bookmarks for a while but …Well, I’ll come to that. Not to rain on its parade, but Advanced Weather […] You’re reading Advanced Weather Companion GNOME Shell Extension, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu. Do not reproduce elsewhere without (...)

Being a Linux nerd I rarely go outside —that’s a joke— but knowing what the weather is doing beyond my basement walls —still a joke— is useful – if only because it usually gives me an excuse to stay at my desk compiling my own kernel —not a joke. Scores of Linux weather apps, widgets, and add-ons exist. These put current temperature, conditions, and (usually) near-term forecasts within easy reach, or permanently on show. And honestly? That’s the most weather data most of us need or care to know. It answers ‘will I need a jacket?’, ‘will it rain today?’, […] You’re reading Mousam is a Detailed Desktop Weather App for Linux, a blog post from OMG! Ubuntu.

#Trees and #land absorbed almost no CO2 last year. Is nature’s carbon sink failing? | Oceans | #The_Guardian

Only one major tropical rainforest – the #Congo_basin – remains a strong #carbon_sink that removes more than it releases into the atmosphere. Exacerbated by #El_Niño #weather patterns, deforestation and global heating, the Amazon basin is experiencing a record-breaking drought, with rivers at an all-time low. Expansion of #agriculture has turned #tropical_rainforests in south-east Asia into a net source of #emissions in recent years.

Emissions from soil – which is the second-largest active carbon store after the oceans – are expected to increase by as much as 40% by the end of the century if they continue at the current rate, as soils become drier and microbes break them down faster.

Tim Lenton, professor of #climate_change and #Earth_system_science at Exeter University, says: “We are seeing in the biosphere some surprising responses that are not what got predicted, just as we are in the #climate.

“You have to question: to what degree can we rely on them as carbon sinks or carbon stores?” he says.

A paper published in July found that while the total amount of carbon absorbed by forests between 1990 and 2019 was steady, it varied substantially by region. The boreal forests – home to about a third of all carbon found on land, which stretch across Russia, Scandinavia, Canada and Alaska – have seen a sharp fall in the amount of carbon they absorb, down more than a third due to climate crisis-related beetle outbreaks, fire and clearing for timber.

A startling new discovery could destroy all those global-warming doomsday forecasts

Source: Investors Business Daily by staff

“Scientists just discovered a massive, heretofore unknown, source of nitrogen. Why does this matter? Because it could dramatically change those dire global warming forecasts that everybody claims are based on ‘settled science.’ The researchers, whose findings were published in the prestigious journal Science, say they’ve determined that the idea that the only source of nitrogen for plant life came from the air is wrong. There are vast storehouses in the planet’s bedrock that plants also feed on. This is potentially huge news, since what it means is that there is a vastly larger supply of nitrogen than previously believed. University of California at Davis (...)

Convergent evidence for widespread rock nitrogen sources in Earth’s surface environment | Science
      ▻http://science.sciencemag.org/content/360/6384/58.full

      $Freed from a rocky embrace*
Nitrogen availability is a central controller of terrestrial plant growth and, thereby, of the carbon cycle and global climate change. It has been widely assumed that the atmosphere is the main source of terrestrial nitrogen input. Surprisingly, Houlton et al. now show that bedrock is just as large a nitrogen source across major sectors of the global terrestrial environment. They used three diverse and largely independent assessments of the nitrogen mobility and reactivity of rocks in the surface environment. These approaches yielded convergent estimates pointing to the equal importance of the atmosphere and bedrock as nitrogen sources.

      Science, this issue p. 58

      Abstract
Nitrogen availability is a pivotal control on terrestrial carbon sequestration and global climate change. Historical and contemporary views assume that nitrogen enters Earth’s land-surface ecosystems from the atmosphere. Here we demonstrate that bedrock is a nitrogen source that rivals atmospheric nitrogen inputs across major sectors of the global terrestrial environment. Evidence drawn from the planet’s nitrogen balance, geochemical proxies, and our spatial weathering model reveal that ~19 to 31 teragrams of nitrogen are mobilized from near-surface rocks annually. About 11 to 18 teragrams of this nitrogen are chemically weathered in situ, thereby increasing the unmanaged (preindustrial) terrestrial nitrogen balance from 8 to 26%. These findings provide a global perspective to reconcile Earth’s nitrogen budget, with implications for nutrient-driven controls over the terrestrial carbon sink.

How to start with “VANE language” API – MODIS example

    http://www.digital-geography.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/OWM-MODIS_weather.png

The VANE geospatial platform, that’s coming out of the Beta now, is a new project we started at #Openweathermap, relying on our expertise in providing well-designed #APIs for #weather #data which is widely used by devs community. The VANE concept is to unite all operations with remote sensing data into consistent queries, allowing users to work with the data similar to the other #SQL-fashioned APIs, they are probably familiar with. This approach is different from what the typical workflow of Earth observation data usually is. Typicaly one needs to search for the certain imagery or dataset through the catalog, then place an order, then download it from FTP and process it in some desktop software he knows how to deal with, etc. That’s why the cloud-based data processing workflows are developing very fast towards providing users with most capabilities online.

So what do we get with “VANE language” API and how it works?

    – You can SELECT by time, source, date-time period, imagery bands, tile coordinates and many other parameters, specifying the appropriate one.
    – You can APPLY online processing with multispectral 16-bit imagery, like difference indices, Change Detection, custom color processing…
    – And finally, you GET the result instantly as tiles or GeoJSON-polygon.

Spy agencies fund climate research in hunt for weather weapon, scientist fears | Environment | The Guardian
    ▻http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/feb/15/spy-agencies-fund-climate-research-weather-weapon-claim

A senior US scientist has expressed concern that the intelligence services are funding climate change research to learn if new technologies could be used as potential weapons.

Spy agencies could be funding geo-engineering research in pursuit of weaponising the weather, scientists claims - Science - News - The Independent
    ▻http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/spy-agencies-could-be-funding-geoengineering-research-in-pursuit-of-w

Professor Robock’s concerns come as a major report on geo-engineering is to be published this week by the US National Academy of Sciences. Among the report’s list of sponsors is the “US intelligence community", which includes Nasa, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the US Department of Energy.

The professor alleges that the #CIA told a colleague of his that it wanted to fund the report, but claimed that it did not want this fact to be too obvious – he added that the CIA is “a major funder” of the report which “makes me really worried about who is going to be in control”.

He claimed the US government had a proven history of using the weather in a hostile way, citing the action of seeding clouds during the Vietnam War to muddy the Ho Chi Minh foot-trail and attempt to cut it off, as it was used as a supply route but the north Vietnamese.

He claimed the CIA had also seeded clouds over Cuba “to make it rain and ruin the sugar harvest”.

More than 4,000 people have been evacuated from flood-damaged homes in northern Gaza in what the United Nations has called “a disaster area,” officials said on Saturday. Flooding has been so severe that access to many homes is by rowing boat and water is reported to be two meters (more than six feet) high in some places. Many people have been trapped inside inundated homes by rising waters. The flooding is the result of four days of torrential rains. read (...)
