If you sell it yourself, you can make more of the profits on each book and in turn you can sell fewer books to break even. Publishers take on lots of new authors every year and only a fraction of those artist make any money at all. Sure there are the few that become very successful and make a good living but they are a special case. Plus you never see the years of work that these artists put into building their craft before getting picked up in the first place.
(...)
I can’t tell you how many amazing artists I’ve talked to that have been published through big comic publishers who have never seen a penny for their books. One person I know said he sold over 10,000 copies and never saw a dime. I’m not saying that these comic publishers are bad but I AM saying that it’s someone else’s business. The publisher makes money first and then the creator makes money second. If you become the publisher then you make the money first.
I started Bobwhite because I wanted to write about girls who I felt were missing from the kind of college movies and tv shows I was watching. Girls who didn’t have life magically figured out, who talked about stupid stuff and wasted their time doing dumb things. Girls who couldn’t always get what they wanted and made mistakes as often as they made good decisions. Girls who I felt resembled myself and the people I knew. I also wanted to write about college as I experienced it- where there weren’t always wild parties to go to and amazing, crazy, life-changing events every other night.
