It’s election season in #Zimbabwe, and so, as before, the State has engaged in ‘urban renewal’ by ‘cleaning the streets.’
(...) from the colonial days to the present, women, individually and collectively, have rejected the attempt.
(...) So, when Al Jazeera tells you “#Zimbabwe cracks down on the oldest profession,” don’t believe it. The target is, as it always has been, “ordinary #women”. Simple.
Son but : promouvoir l’éducation.

The coverage of violence against women
▻http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2013/03/27/the-coverage-of-violence-against-women
Egyptian women experience various forms of discrimination in public and private life. One of the biggest results of discrimination is violence. Although the media condemns violence and raises awareness about its enormity in some outlets, it has been accused of accidently perpetuating violence as well. Daily News Egypt investigates how violence against Egyptian women is covered in both printed and televised media.

#Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini dies at 103

Yesterday the world lost one of its most extraordinary scientists when Rita Levi-Montalcini died at her home in Rome at the age of 103.

Born into a well-to-do Jewish family in Turin in 1909, Levi-Montalcini fought hard for her career from the beginning. First there was her domineering father, who didn’t believe in higher education for #women. Then there were Benito Mussolini’s race laws, which ejected Jews from universities and forced her into hiding. And after that there was the scientific establishment, which refused to believe in the existence of nerve growth factor (NGF), the discovery of which eventually won Levi-Montalcini a share of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

Women are burying their children on almost a weekly basis now. In our poor country where women view their children as the single reason to wake up in the morning, this death aroma is bound to stir action.
And despite what these women offer the country, they have been marginalized in a sick joke of a Constituent Assembly and completely left out of an even sicker draft constitution. Young women are harassed by Niqabis on the street, as well as men, for being unveiled or not face-veiled. Pseudo-Sheikhs spout out their own twisted version of the role of women—mainly a sex minion and a reproduction vessel—on TV all the time.

Child brides blot tribal Pakistan - Al Jazeera English

Child marriage - known as “swara” in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, “vani” in Punjab, “sang chati” in Sindh, and “vani” and “lajai” in Balochistan - are enacted in disturbingly large swathes of Pakistan and reinforced by customs that treat women as commodities.

Is Pfizer Liable for Pregnancies Caused by Faulty Birth Control ? - Brad Jacobson - Health - The Atlantic

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer recently announced it’s recalling one million packets of birth control medication because it mixed up the order of the hormone-containing pills with #placebos during packaging, putting an unknown number of #women at risk for unintended pregnancies. While news of this error spread quickly, the question of Pfizer’s liability in this incident and how it delayed to notify the public has received scant attention.
Longue analyse juridique pour savoir si la société Pfizer peut être tenue pour responsable des grossesses survenues suite à cette erreur de packaging : un placebo à la place de la #pilule contraceptive.

In the western world, we often take for granted the ubiquitous nature of connectivity and technology. In Liberia, activists like Gbowee had to get the word out to other women via radio and word of mouth.
The biggest limitation right now for women in areas like Africa and other parts of the developing world is the lack of access to #technology. Beyond just not having the technical resources, women in these countries also don’t have education or experience using these devices.
Gbowee said that those of us in the western world — and she made a point to say that this has to go beyond the U.S. — need to look at investing in places without technology. The first step is assessing the needs, the existing setups and the goals in each area.
Gender wage gap smaller in science and technology | Nature News Blog

#Women in #science, #technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs earn less than men — but the gender gap is not as wide as it is in other fields, according to a report released on 3 August by the US Department of Commerce.
The report, titled “Women in STEM: A Gender Gap to Innovation”, compared the average hourly earnings of full-time, year-round male and female workers in the private sector. In non-STEM occupations, men made 21% more than women. In STEM jobs, however, that difference was a bit smaller, with men making 14% more than women on average.

These films don’t include horny schoolgirls, naughty nurses, nymphomaniac nannies or desperate housewives. Nor do they include Mafiosi, multimillionaires drinking cognac, pimps, drug dealers or super-sized sex machines. Because these women, as filmmakers and consumers, place themselves far away from mainstream porn.

An exciting update on last week’s discussion about how certain US politicians believe that, while some women are unfortunate enough to be raped, not all of them have been raped enough. “Forcible #rape” was the coinage these chaps came up with, which heretofore many would have considered tautological. But these politicians pointed out the error of such thinking: in the bill they put forward, they said that if a woman was in any way mentally incapacitated while she was raped, she couldn’t qualify for government money to have an #abortion. The rape hadn’t been forced, you see, and maybe the woman hadn’t fought her attacker off because she was drugged up with Rohypnol, but it could also have been because she, you know, wanted it. Hard to say. So instead, if this woman really did insist on aborting the conception-by-rape pregnancy, she should just go back and get raped again and this time, for heaven’s sake, try to stay awake during the proceedings.
