India’s ambitious plans for a huge expansion of its nuclear power capacity to help ease the country’s crippling power shortages have provoked a bitter backlash.
On Tuesday one of the country’s top nuclear scientists called for a temporary moratorium on commissioning any new nuclear power plants in the country until New Delhi can win the support of the local communities that will live in the shadow of the reactors.

On Monday, a protester was killed when police opened fire on angry villagers who had surrounded a police station. Earlier on Monday, thousands of villagers marched to lay siege to the plant and managed to get within half a kilometre before police dispersed them with tear gas.
The violent clashes at Kudankulam, which is being built by the state-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India in conjunction with Russia’s Rosatom, echo last year’s violent protests in Jaitapur, where France’s Areva is hoping to build a 3,300MW nuclear power station.
