Pour sa dernière étude, il s’est rendu en Haïti à la rencontre des rites vaudous, et des « zombis ». Le folklore, les zombies des films américains (ceux avec un « e » à la fin), Philippe Charlier s’en fout. Lui s’intéresse aux « zombis », aux vrais, victimes de prêtres vaudous qui les empoisonnent pour les réduire en esclavage en anéantissant leur volonté. En préambule à la zombification, le sorcier fabrique une poudre à base de tétrodotoxine, une poison puissant issu d’un poisson tropical (le tétraodon, ou poisson-globe), qui est ensuite répandue de manière à être contact avec la peau de la victime, souvent à l’intérieur de ses vêtements. Le poison place alors la victime dans un état cataleptique, la faisant passer pour morte. Elle est rapidement enterrée, mais pas pour longtemps : moins de 24 heures plus tard, le sorcier la déterre et la ramène à la "vie" grâce à un antidote à base d’atropine qui élimine les effets du poison, avant de administrer d’autres drogues qui s’assureront de sa docilité totale et de son incapacité à s’échapper. Si, comme souvent dans le folklore haïtien, mythes et réalité sont difficiles à démêler, on estime que près de 1000 nouveaux cas de zombification sont recensés chaque année. On a donc demandé à Philippe Charlier ce qu’il avait pu voir lors de son enquête sur place, et à quoi ressemblaient les zombis qu’il a rencontrés.

Among others, these documents reveal the “Sonic Screwdriver” project which, as explained by the CIA, is a “mechanism for executing code on peripheral devices while a Mac laptop or desktop is booting” allowing an attacker to boot its attack software for example from a USB stick “even when a firmware password is enabled”. The CIA’s “Sonic Screwdriver” infector is stored on the modified firmware of an Apple Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter.

“DarkSeaSkies” is “an implant that persists in the EFI firmware of an Apple MacBook Air computer” and consists of “DarkMatter”, “SeaPea” and “NightSkies”, respectively EFI, kernel-space and user-space implants.

Documents on the “Triton” MacOSX malware, its infector “Dark Mallet” and its EFI-persistent version “DerStarke” are also included in this release. While the DerStarke1.4 manual released today dates to 2013, other Vault 7 documents show that as of 2016 the CIA continues to rely on and update these systems and is working on the production of DerStarke2.0.

Also included in this release is the manual for the CIA’s “NightSkies 1.2” a “beacon/loader/implant tool” for the Apple iPhone. Noteworthy is that NightSkies had reached 1.2 by 2008, and is expressly designed to be physically installed onto factory fresh iPhones. i.e the CIA has been infecting the iPhone supply chain of its targets since at least 2008.

Republican lawmakers in the US Senate approved a measure on Thursday designed to kill federal broadband privacy protections and allow internet service providers like AT&T and Verizon to sell your sensitive private information to the highest bidder.

The vote represents the culmination of a year-long campaign by the nation’s largest internet service providers (ISPs) and their GOP allies to torpedo Federal Communications Commission rules that require broadband providers to obtain “opt-in” consent before using, sharing, or selling private consumer data.

Consumer advocates and privacy watchdogs responded with outrage, and accused Republican lawmakers of putting the financial interests of a handful of wildly profitable corporate giants ahead of the privacy interests of the American people.

Old Mahlel is located a few kilometers outside of Douz, a town in south Tunisia affectionately nicknamed “the gateway to the Sahara,” and mostly a tourist stop before long treks through the desert. Now in his mid 40s, Ameur spent his entire life in this village, working as a tour guide and taking care of his animals. But six years ago, his family had to move. The Sahara, which covers 3.6 million square miles, or roughly the size of the entire United States, had steadily encroached onto Old Mahlel. The villagers were effectively pushed out by desertification.

“Desertification is a complicated issue,” sighs Nabil Ben Khatra, coordinator at the Observatory of the Sahara and Sahel, an intergovernmental organization based in Tunis that focuses on issues in arid zones across the African continent. The UN officially refers to the process as “the persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems” brought on by climate change and aggressive human abuse. As environmentalist Allan Savory said more succinctly in a 2013 TED Talk, desertification is “a fancy word for land that is turning into desert.”

Farmers are pushing back against legislation that prevents them from fixing their own equipment. If successful, it will be a huge victory for consumers.

A major national group has adopted a policy to fight for the right to repair electronics, but it might not be the one you’d expect: farmers.

The right to repair movement is an effort to loosen laws to allow consumers to be able to fix technology without sending it back to the original manufacturer. Right now, replacement parts and diagnostic tools are carefully guarded by the manufacturer, and right to repair supporters believe they should be available to the public. The effort has largely been driven by the consumer tech sector—like people who want to be able to fix their iPhone instead of buying a new one—but the lack of access to repair materials has greatly impacted farmers, too.

Modern farm equipment is high tech and includes onboard computers, but the majority of farming equipment manufacturers refuse to allow access to the software, claiming it’s proprietary information. That means farmers are stuck waiting for a John Deere technician to swap a tiny sensor when it misfires and shuts down the entire tractor.

They’d rather just fix it themselves or, at the very least, take it to someone locally who can do the job. But right now, that’s not possible.

Since all this #color_contamination from light sources isn’t really useful (it would be super confusing if a ripe banana looked yellow in the morning but green at midday, for example), our brains have evolved to color correct. It allows the colors we see to look the same no matter the lighting.

“In this picture, someone has very cleverly manipulated the image so that the objects you’re looking at are reflecting what would otherwise be achromatic or grayscale, but the light source that your brain interprets to be on the scene has got this blueish component,” Conway told me. “You brain says, ’the light source that I’m viewing these strawberries under has some blue component to it, so I’m going to subtract that automatically from every pixel.’ And when you take grey pixels and subtract out this blue bias, you end up with red.”

Arterbury showed Motherboard two documented cases of items put up for sale over Snapchat in the past couple of months. The first item was a Phantom 4 consumer drone, with the seller noting it had been used to film a Jabhat al-Nusra battle scene. Another instance, this one of an actual arms sales listing, pertained a thermal riflescope, which was being sold to raise funds for Haya-at Tahrir al-Sham, a Jihadist and Salafist group involved in the Syrian Civil War.

The idea that it’s “unsafe” to repair your own devices is one that manufacturers have been promoting for years. Last year, industry lobbyists told lawmakers in Minnesota that broken glass could cut the fingers of consumers who try to repair their screens, according to Gay Gordon-Byrne, executive director of Repair.org. Byrne said she will also testify at the Nebraska hearing and “plans to bring band aids.”

“They should want to give people as much information about how to deal with a hazardous thing as they can,” Gordon-Byrne said. “If they’re concerned about exploding batteries, put warning labels on them and tell consumers how to replace them safely.”

C’est un phénomène très documenté. Cette #instabilité naturelle est renforcée dans un environnement #politique où les #climatosceptiques s’assurent que le changement climatique est présenté comme un sujet ouvert au débat.
Scott Pruitt, qui est en train d’être auditionné au Congrès [pour diriger l’Agence états-unienne de protection de l’environnement, l’EPA], ne croit pas au changement climatique. Cet ex-procureur général de l’Oklahoma est connu pour avoir défendu les industriels gaziers et pétroliers adeptes de la fracturation hydraulique, au lieu d’avoir réglementé cette pratique qui cause des niveaux sans précédent de microtremblements de terre. Donc, nous avons toutes les chances de croire que les données contenues sur le site #web de l’EPA seront encore plus vulnérables.
Mais l’EPA est juste un exemple. Il y a de multiples agences publiques et ministères dont les données sur le #climat sont menacées. En décembre, l’équipe de transition de Trump voulait que le ministre sortant de l’Énergie lui fournisse une liste de noms des personnes ayant travaillé sur l’Accord de Paris. Heureusement, il a dit non et a même autorisé les membres de son ministère à utiliser les réseaux sociaux comme ils le souhaitent, sans être punis.

And we can see this with the most recent Google Trends Freaking Outrage (GTFO), like this Washington Post story titled “The British are frantically Googling what the E.U. is, hours after voting to leave it.”

They note that searches about the EU tripled. But how many people is that? Are they voters? Are they eligible to vote? Were they Leave or Remain? Trends doesn’t tell us, all it does is give us a nice graph with a huge peak. More likely, it’s a very small number of people, based on this graph that puts it in context with other searches in the region:

But it’s giving plenty of people cover to insult the entire country, when it’s likely just a few people searching for something in a way that they always search for something. It makes “The British are frantically Googling what the EU is, hours after voting to leave it” absurdly disingenuous without better numbers. Remy Smith points this out: The peak was merely ~1000 people! It’s ludicrous that so few people get turned into a massive story, but it underscores the need for context.
